Newt Gingrich vs. Survivor

Cease and desist
Politics • Views: 27,220

The latest musicians to get upset at Republicans for appropriating a song without permission: the band Survivor, whose song “Eye of the Tiger” has been used by Newt Gingrich for years.

The federal lawsuit, filed Monday in Chicago by Rude Music Inc., contends Gingrich has used the song since 2009 to herald his arrival at rallies and public events.

The lawsuit says Gingrich uses the song without the permission of Frank Sullivan, who with Jim Peterik, composed the song and copyrighted it in 1982.

The lawsuit asks for an injunction to prevent Gingrich from using the song, as well as damages and attorneys’ fees.

I’d actually be in favor of never hearing “Eye of the Tiger” again, for any purpose.

Republican candidates can't seem to get any musicians good or even mediocre in this case to allow them to play their songs.

Try the rye or the kaiser,
They're our special tonight.
If you want, you can have an appetizer
You might like our salami and the liver’s alright
And they'd really go well with the rye or the kaiser

But it was used for the most perfect stage setting montage ever at the start of Rocky III!

A friend of mine told me about the time that she and her brother were driving across the I-5 bridge. Eye of the Tiger was on and he turned it up. The windows were down because it was an old VW bug with no AC.

Then the shocks went out (old VW bug, remember).

Now they're driving across the bridge, bouncing to the beat. She wanted to die.

My dad and his brothers had a little ping pong tournament between them and my one uncle decided to come out to Eye of the Tiger with a towel on his head imitating a boxer. Was pretty funny stuff but my oldest uncle ultimately prevailed.

Newt promises to undo the damages done to America in the 60s and 70s

Gingrich: One of the great challenges we have is that we now have to undo the damage done in the ’60s and ’70s by a movement that somehow thought it could reinvent being human and the fact is it couldn’t. There are very wise rules that have grown up over a very long time and I think when we try to break those rules—I always tell people you could understand the world we’re in right this minute if you can come to grips with Paul’s letters because in many ways he’s writing about being Christian in a pagan world, and a great deal of what’s happened is that our elites have driven us towards a kind of paganism that they don’t think of as paganism, they think it’s modern and clever, but in fact it’s not anything new or different. So I think one of the great challenges for us is to stand up for religion and to stand up for the lessons, both in personal life and in religious freedom, that are at the heart of any kind of healthy society.

So, in other words, we need a Shariah Christian Law to rule America.

His Imperial Majesty Self-Designate, Newt the First, was stamping out the opposition today; literally, when he sent his goons to step on the toes of a Ron Paul supporter whose sign was too close to the imperial personage. The Paulist peasant was there first by all accounts, but Newt and the imperial entourage chose the spot for themselves.

Yeah damn those people who wanted equal rights for all. And lol at all the references to paganism. Given paganism's huge influence on Christianity that's laughable as is Newt trying to act like the 60's and 70's protests were so terrible. What a pos that guy is.

I will be so happy when the 60's and 70's stop mattering in politics. Some of us came of age in the 80's and 90's and we're getting sick of the Vietnam war and hippies still being the focus of every goddamn presidential race.

Even Barack Obama wasn't immune to this shit, despite being a child in the 1960's. WTF.

It would be really cool to hold the primary "Survivor" style, though I don't think I would like to see pasty Newt, et al wearing loincloths.

This sort of thing seems to happen on a regular basis, and the campaigns just never seem to learn.

If a campaign likes a particular song, I've never understood why they don't just get a cover band to record it under a compulsory mechanical license, and just play that.

Charles, am I off-base, or is that how the mechanical license thing works?
