This is a comment from the Townhall article tonight on the ebola case:
Lynn294 Wrote:4 hours ago (7:56 PM)
The CDC and local health departments have been infected with a fatal disease - political correctness. They are no longer able to quarantine people who have been exposed to diseases for which there is no cure because that violates their “rights.” When I was growing up in the 1950s my friend’s little bother became ill with polio. The health department nailed a quarantine notice on each door of their house. No one was allowed in or out until they had passed the incubation period. I’m sure it wasn’t pleasant but they never complained because it was their civic duty to protect others. The ability to quarantine ended in the 1980s with the aids epidemic. It was no longer politically correct to quarantine those who had been exposed because they belonged to a politically active class of people. In the current ebola case, they will not be able to quarantine the patient’s family who were certainly exposed because they are African Americans which is also a politically protected class.

Congrats to the KC Royals on a well-earned win. I had the …misfortune… of seeing innings 10th-middle-of-bottom-of-the-12th in a bar with a number of very drunk, very loud Oakland fans.
No better way to make me root against your team than to be loudly cursing and trash-talking the opposing team in a restaurant. If you want to do that, go to a sports bar. Added bonus: the guy sexually harassing the woman on the other side of him, to the point where I nearly called for a manager. I should have, in retrospect.

State senator makes Holocaust comparison in speech
A recently elected West Texas state senator on Tuesday compared what he called a “spiritual battle” against religion in the United States to the Holocaust.
[…]
In his inaugural speech, Perry said a recent trip to a concentration camp in Berlin made him draw a comparison between what he believes are efforts by the government to pass laws against religion and the killing of Jews during the Holocaust.
“There were 10,000 people that were paraded into a medical office (at the concentration camp in Berlin) under the guise of a physical. As they stood with their back against the wall, they were executed with a bullet through the throat. Before they left, 10,000 people met their fate that way,” Perry said.
“Is it not the same than when our government continues to perpetuate laws that lead citizens away from God? The only difference is that the fraud of the Germans was more immediate and whereas the fraud of today’s government will not be exposed until the final days and will have eternal-lasting effects.”
Perry said in his speech that while he’ll work to address the state’s financial needs by prioritizing state funding and balancing the budget without raising taxes, his biggest challenge will be the “spiritual battle for the spirit of this nation and the soul of its people.”

So passing the constitutional amendment is nothing more than a mere thought exercise?
Sure it COULD allow legislation that sets women’s reproductive rights back 50 years but that doesn’t mean that any such legislation WOULD be passed? Why would you think anyone would believe that line of reasoning Mr. Kessler?
The one and only reason for adding such an amendment to a state constitution is to enable the passing of the exact type of legislation described by Braley. It is disingenuous at best to suggest that proposing this amendment was made for any reason other than to allow restrictions on women’s reproductive rights to pass future legal scrutiny.
Sorry, I find your reasoning in this matter to be less than convincing.

Basically he says that supporters of Common Core are mostly white men, 20-40, who don’t have kids so what would they know about it?
His evidence for how bad Common Core is is a page out of a textbook that describes a method for subtracting 2 numbers. Now, it’s not how I was taught to subtract, so it did feel a bit strange to me. But this just gives me the sense that a lot of people’s problem with Common Core, particularly with the math, is that “It doesn’t explain things the way I was taught.”

It’s actually rather troubling that people in positions of some responsibility wouldn’t be able to figure out a 3-step algorithm that involves writing numbers down and then adding them up.

Mysterious 2008 death of Kenwin Garcia in NJ state police custody raises disturbing questions about investigation http://t.co/8rPXouRfUj— lawhawk (@lawhawk) October 1, 2014
If this is a story that sounds too familiar, that’s because it’s the subject of current news - whether the Eric Garner case or other high profile cases where suspects died in police conduct with suspicious circumstances (like the one suspect who somehow managed to shoot himself in the chest despite being handcuffed with his hands behind him).
In the case of Garcia, police were never indicted but the family won a $700,000 civil settlement from the state.
The NJ case also exposes the all too frequent conflict of interests when law enforcement has to investigate and prosecute a police officer. Note too that the NJ State Police were already under federal oversight as a result of their longstanding racial profiling practices, but the State Attorney General refused to appoint an independent prosecutor to handle the matter.
It is unclear whether just what was presented to the grand jury in this case, but the AG’s office and state police and union officials all deny that the death was the result of police brutality/excessive force and stand by the grand jury outcome.

I’m sorely tempted to register at RedState simply in order to opine that the “counting up” method of subtraction is well-explained by the example given, and should be graspable by a literate adult with a minimal amount of effort.
It’s actually rather troubling that people in positions of some responsibility wouldn’t be able to figure out a 3-step algorithm that involves writing numbers down and then adding them up.
It’s also the way my mother always used when she used to cashier. Say a purchase was $13.59 and she was given a $20 by a customer, she would count up the charge by starting at $13.59 until she got to $20.

Standard short-sighted crap viewpoint. I don’t have children, but still do have great concerns about issues regarding education since it’s the bedrock on which an advanced society is built. So you learn about the issues and agitate accordingly.

I love the look I get from cashiers when I give them odd payment amounts. Initial sort of “crap - why are you handing me change in addition to the $20?”. And it is obviously not exact change for the amount as well. So they punch it into the cash register and it comes back as something like a $5 and three quarters. And then I get the look like I pulled off some sort of wizardry, sometimes mixed with the “you’re some kind of smartass, aren’t you?” expression.

The domestic American agitators who want an insurrection here to “save” the country need to pay closer attention to stuff like this in the Ukraine. Maybe. Maybe. They will then get a clue that there will be a lot of destruction and death of innocents in any attempt to overthrow the government via violence.
Though I expect they view their efforts as the Bush Administration viewed invading Iraq. Welcoming masses throwing flowers to greet them and an easy peasy transition to a new and very profitable government.

As in giving them extra payment in pennies, just to get them out of my pocket.

I think minting pennies costs more than the face value of the coins now. Common sense would suggest we do away with them, but then retailers couldn’t pull the sneaky trick of pricing stuff as $xx.99, which is essentially the same as $(xx+1).00 but looks cheaper.

Specifically, they want the current chief executive to step down immediately.
At a news conference Wednesday afternoon (local time), the Hong Kong Federation of Students, one of the main protest organizing groups, said it was prepared to widen the campaign of civil disobedience if the chief executive, C.Y. Leung, did not resign.
“If C.Y. Leung doesn’t step down by tonight or tomorrow night, we will announce (plans) to escalate the operation,” said Lester Shum, one of the organization’s figureheads. “This means: to occupy different important government buildings.”
To my surprise, China is not blocking CNN’s webpages. BBC’s Hong Kong coverage is being blocked, presumably because Cameron had some sharp words for the Chinese, thereby hurting their feelings.

Body-cam used to exonerate officer in officer involved shooting in SLC.
A police officer was legally justified in shooting an unarmed man, a Salt Lake City district attorney said Tuesday, in a decision based on video from the officer’s body camera. The case is the first time the district attorney there has relied on body-cam evidence to determine whether an officer-involved shooting could be justified.
Dillon Taylor, 20, was shot to death by Salt Lake City officer Bron Cruz on Aug. 11 after police received a report about three men who were seen near a 7-Eleven, possibly flashing a gun, reported NBC affiliate KSL. The men — Taylor, along with his brother and cousin — are seen on Cruz’s body-cam video in the parking lot when Cruz pulls in. Taylor’s brother and cousin stop and put up their hands; Taylor keeps walking, head down.
After the shooting, the officer went and attempted to provide first aid, called for ambulance, and asked what he was reaching for in his waist band.
Further investigation found a Facebook posting that Taylor had “hit rock bottom”, which seems to suggest a suicide by cop situation.
You can still question whether the officer should have had access to using non-lethal force such as a taser, but when you’ve got a suspect reaching into their waistband at a critical moment, the officer has to make the split second decision whether it’s a weapon or not. If the officer delays, it could cost them their life.
In other words, even having the body camera wont resolve all cases of excessive force or police brutality, but we all get to begin to understand how these situations unfold in real time, and can help prosecutors and juries decide whether the actions were appropriate.

Authorities are bracing for possibility of second person in Dallas being infected with Ebola - who was in close contact with the first person. Other immediate family members are also being watched.
Dallas County Health and Human Services Director Zachary Thompson said there is one particular contact of the patient who he fears may have Ebola.
“Let me be real frank to the Dallas County residents: the fact that we have one confirmed case, there may be another case that is a close associate with this particular patient,” Thompson said Wednesday morning in an interview with local ABC affiliate WFAA.
“So this is real. There should be a concern, but it’s contained to the specific family members and close friends at this moment.”
Thompson did not provide further detail about the potential case, only saying that he or she is under strict monitoring as a precaution.
A visitor to Dallas from Liberia was officially diagnosed with Ebola Tuesday afternoon, the first case ever confirmed outside of Africa.
Details are increasingly leaking out about the unidentified man. He arrived in the United States on a commercial flight on Sept. 20 and initially sought care for Ebola-like symptoms on Friday.
The patient was admitted to the hospital on Sunday and placed in isolation. He was staying with family members in the Dallas area, not in a hotel, officials said.
I am suspecting that ER and personal doctors will begin asking their patients whether they’ve had any contact with anyone who has recently been to West Africa, since that is the source of the current outbreak. That’s particularly key since the symptoms of Ebola can mimic those of many other common diseases, from bad colds to the flu and even malaria.
Still, there are those who think that the CDC isn’t reacting swiftly enough and that more precautions must be put in place. It is possible that the FAA may end up putting in more flight restrictions, though there are few direct flights between US and West Africa, but that doesn’t begin to count those flights that are connecting between the US an intermediate city, and the affected areas in West Africa.
It means that public health officials have to be vigilant not only in the US, but at foreign airports, and at the airports in West Africa so that they can screen out potentially infected persons to keep them from infecting others along the way. Given what we know about the poor public health system in Liberia and Sierra Leone, this is a tall task.

Cool. Last winter, a group of us grabbed a late lunch in a bar & grill in Boston’s theatre district. The place was packed from a matinee just getting out, and because of an approaching blizzard there were only two people working the joint: an assistant chef on his first week on the job and the bartender who was doubling as the sole waitress. Because of the rush and the weather, the food was being microwaved and it tweren’t very good. Drinks and victuals seemed to take forever to arrive. Nobody in the joint seemed happy about that situation, yet from what I could tell most folks left good tips. It was more than obvious that the two employees were working their keisters off.

re: #223 NJDhockeyfan
Because the symptoms of Ebola are similar to those of other common diseases like influenza.
The main difference is that someone with Ebola can only get it from someone who has Ebola, which means that the top question a doctor needs to ask is whether they’ve been to West Africa or come into contact with someone who was in West Africa over the past three weeks.
If they had asked that question, they might have realized they had an Ebola exposed patient and put them into isolation sooner.

Buildings in Europe are so much more interesting than those in China. While some new buildings are designed more creatively, the vast majority of buildings, even private homes, look like something a kid would make with only the basic rectangular Lego blocks — cinderblock construction with a cement coating and ceramic tile exterior.
We have a new classroom building nearing completion on campus. It’s not a prize winner architecturally speaking, but glass and steel is a welcome change from white ceramic tile
and concrete.

Standard short-sighted crap viewpoint. I don’t have children, but still do have great concerns about issues regarding education since it’s the bedrock on which an advanced society is built. So you learn about the issues and agitate accordingly.
What would work best is that the educational system was honest about what its purpose is. Currently its purpose is not to turn out human beings suitable for citizenship but human resources suitable for employment. Although that is never said out loud.
Currently the public thinks our educational system is for the former function. The bureaucrats and politicians have to make the occasional nod to make it appear otherwise. This leads to the confusion and inefficiency that plagues the system these days. If the goal of the system was decided on honestly and out in the open then we could work towards that goal.
Unfortunately the people with money and power will never agree to an educational system that turns out citizens. It’s too costly and it’s too dangerous to their power. So we’re stuck with an inefficient system that turns out sort of human resources.

re: #234 De Kolta Chair
Cool. Last winter, a group of us grabbed a late lunch in a bar & grill in Boston’s theatre district. The place was packed from a matinee just getting out, and because of an approaching blizzard there were only two people working the joint: an assistant chef on his week on the job and the bartender who was doubling as the sole waitress.
I hit a place in Philadelphia late one Saturday morning after a heavy snowstorm. They were short-staffed (both waiters and cook) and were therefore running a shortened “Snow Day” menu. Service was still adequate even as the place filled up over the hour I was in there.
I didn’t leave a bigger tip than usual, but I normally tip around 20% in any case.

I get hunting for food, I get wanting to be able to protect yourself, and I get shooting targets for hobby but I don’t get the fetishization of weapons. I think it’s silly. Call me “soft” but I’d rather hoard tons of music than weaponry and post on twitter sexualized posts about guns.

Unfortunately they regard people on ‘the other side’, even the kids, as deserving death or at least not important enough to care about. Dead on their side are ‘glorious martyrs who gave all for the cause.’
It is human nature to minimize death, or worse, make it a form of currency.

Oh, I know. There’s significant popular support behind Occupy Central, even among people who are not out on the streets. But those who intend to occupy government buildings are putting themselves at great risk. The leaders of HK are as scared of the protests as Beijing is. HK has always been run by the 1%, and they are not going to relinquish one bit of that control without a fight.
Thereby demonstrating that the differences between those in positions of power in any system is merely aesthetic.

Authorities are bracing for possibility of second person in Dallas being infected with Ebola - who was in close contact with the first person. Other immediate family members are also being watched.
Nuke Dallas before its too late!

Apparently SUVs are viewed with derision in Europe. This is part of the problem of any discussion of rape.
Human interaction is too nuanced and full of degrees of consent and complicity to be boiled down to the sort of bullet-point discussion that we get on the Twitter and the Internet.
Rape means sex without consent. Whether force, threats, coercion or any other methods are employed is a secondary issue.

I gave up on CSI just before they killed off a popular character, then put two others on a bus. From the episodes I’ve since looked in on it, I feel confident I made the right decision to get out before it went off the rails. Same with L&O and NCIS, I think a lot of the older crime drama shows need to be put out to pasture. They’re recycling cliches like mad, the characters have gotten old and stale, and the need to keep surprising and shocking the audience has meant going way past the bounds of reality.

Last night I watched the MST3K version of the 1961 Brit monster flick “Gorgo,” which had many of the same plot points as the latest “Godzilla.”
According to the Wikipedia article on the movie:
Australia was also considered for a locale, but the producers supposedly decided that audiences “wouldn’t care” if a monster attacked Australia; Australia’s alleged lack of worldwide recognisable landmarks for Gorgo to destroy was also cited as a consideration.

Last night’s NCIS: New Orleans was about a guy who gets infected with BUBONIC PLAGUE. And public health officials were injecting all exposed people with VACCINE. WTF, Plague is bacterial infection treated with antibiotics. It just has a scary name & killed all those people in the Middle Ages who did not have antibiotics.
It turned out to be “weaponized” Plague that could only be treated with a special antibiotic/vaccine/whatever

I watched the first episode and thought it was great, but I’m already getting that voice in the back of my head screaming out at the number of coincidences. The GMU facebook page had an interesting question today that I’ll repeat here. What’s a class that you wish you had taken but did not. For me, History BA and English minor, I wish I had taken Genetics, Sociology, or literature from 1914-1945(was going to my final semester but WWII to the present was available which ended up being a blessing since I had a great professor and got introduced to the works of Cheever,Updike, and Ellison through the course.)
Good one.
Either geology or a film studies class. Both subjects that I’ve picked up bits of via reading and osmosis since college, but some formal education in them would probably help me understand stuff better or be better able to research the subject when I get curious about something I encounter.

Cool choices. I took a film study elective in high school. That was enjoyable and it was sweet since it was at the end of the day. Get to watch a classic movie that I otherwise wouldn’t have seen and just take notes on a stenopad. Got to learn a lot about film in the process. But yeah those three for me and here’s why: Genetics: I want to learn more about traits and what makes us physically who we are and how little subtle things make us appear different from our siblings and other close relatives, Sociology: Want to learn more about how society operates and it just sounds interesting, and the literature course from 1914-1945: I’ve read some Hemingway, Joyce, Fitzgerald, and other writers from that era and I remember a sub-unit in 11th grade English we had on the 20’s and I really enjoyed it. Got to read some Harlem Renaissance works and some Sherwood Anderson as well.

Now, I’m beginning to see reports that Dallas health officials aren’t monitoring anyone else for potential Ebola exposure.
#BreakingNews: Dallas Co health dept says it's NOT monitoring a 2nd person for possible exposure to ebola, earlier reports are wrong— Shepard Smith (@ShepNewsTeam) October 1, 2014
Also, the paramedics who transported the patient with Ebola have tested negative. Of course, that Dallas Morning News report also indicates that they are monitoring several people just in case:
Thompson said friends and family of the patient are still under close observation, but there is no second case. Despite the negative tests, the paramedics also will be closely monitored for symptoms until the known incubation period for the virus has passed.
“Given how sick this person could have been during the time frame, we would not be shocked” if there was a second case, Thompson said. “But do we have a confirmed case to date? No.”
Earlier Wednesday, health department spokeswoman Erikka Neroes told The Dallas Morning News that investigators interviewing people in contact with the patient have identified [fixed the DMN’s typo - where’s the copy editors?] no one else exhibiting symptoms. As of Wednesday morning, the confirmed patient’s condition had been upgraded from critical to serious.

General rule in epidemiology is that the faster that a disease burns out its victim, the slower the spread and the worse the odds are of a widespread outbreak. Ebola can lay dormant for weeks, but it generally kills in a matter of days or hours, and it is only truly infectious in that time period. And unless the victim’s body is handled without protection against bodily fluids, then the virus can’t spread.

A Hospital From Hell, in a City Swamped by Ebola http://t.co/AuEPo5y1nE— The New York Times (@nytimes) October 1, 2014
This is what they’re facing in West Africa where the health care system is essentially incapable of dealing with the crisis. They lack everything, from doctors to enough beds to proper sanitary procedures.
The photos tell the tale. Bodies strewn about on the floor - alive or dead. Bodily fluids all over the place. Too few people to care for the crushing mass of people coming in sick, and a pervasive sense of fear among people that the doctors are spreading the disease.
“The whole country has been hit by something for which it was not ready,” said Dr. Amara Jambai, director of prevention and control at Sierra Leone’s health ministry.
Bombali, the district that includes this city, went from one confirmed case on Aug. 15 to more than 190 this weekend, with dozens more suspected. In a sign of how quickly the disease has spread, at least six dozen new cases have been confirmed in the district in the past few days alone, health officials said.
The government put this district, 120 miles northeast of the capital, Freetown, under quarantine late last week, making official what was already established on the ground. Ebola patients are dying under trees at holding centers or in foul-smelling hospital wards surrounded by pools of infectious waste, cared for as best they can by lightly trained and minimally protected nurses, some wearing merely bluejeans.
This is a disaster of massive proportions in West Africa, and the world’s reaction is still a trickle.
That compares with the situation in Dallas, where the patient is in an isolation ward, where sanitary procedures are in place to keep everyone safe and where dozens of nurses and doctors are in attendance and prepared to deal with the case.

Yeah, the whole problem with such shows is unless you broaden the scope, then you pretty much have writers stuck spending all their time explaining why all these characters just happened to grow up and live in the same town/city. IIRC, the writers of the series are already promising that they’re gonna show the origins of the Joker…except the problem is that the Joker has no singular origin story. In fact, it’s pretty much accepted by fans of the franchise that the only person who really knows his story is him…and he’s so insane that he picks and chooses the details on any given day.

True, but they can’t possibly do much with some of them. The Riddler is just there to say “See! Either approach is fraught with hazards, which is why I figure it can’t work past a single season. A monthly comic series can afford to devote itself to a single character for the duration of a storyline, same as a 2 hr movie. A TV series based upon cameos would too quickly burn itself out.

Sure. I agree. I think these early episodes were a proof of concept more than anything else. They have to cram all this stuff in to get the network on board. My hope is that as the show goes on they don’t have to rely on Batman’s villains anymore since they’re supposed to be focused on the city of Gotham, not Batman. Bruce Wayne is a kid. He’s not going to be facing the Joker anytime soon.
They’re setting up some interesting ideas with Penguin, and he has the potential to become a very, very dark character. Everyone underestimates him, but it’s there. I want to see where they take him. I just hope they do it organically instead of trying to have him team up with some other known villain or whatever. It’s waaay too soon for that.

re: #478 Dr Lizardo
And why will there be a Batman vs. Superman movie?
Superman vs. Batman:
Superman flies Batman to Outer Space.
Superman wins
Superman flies Batman 4000 feet up in the air, drops Batman
Superman wins
I can’t even think of a scenario where Batman wins unless it involves some villainous sneaky thing like slipping Superman a kyptonite roofie, and Batman would never do that.

re: #480 Targetpractice
Either approach is fraught with hazards, which is why I figure it can’t work past a single season. A monthly comic series can afford to devote itself to a single character for the duration of a storyline, same as a 2 hr movie. A TV series based upon cameos would too quickly burn itself out.
But since it’s a chase for ratings and it has been repeatedly shown that quality often has little to do with series popularity I think I might just be yelling at clouds here. I don’t plan on watching it in any case.

So, seriously…..there’s a show based on Batman? After Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy? Why? Is it really just milking it at this point?
The conceit of the show is that it shows the descent of Gotham into the kind of city that would need Batman in the first place. It starts with the Wayne murders. Bruce is a traumatized kid in the story. He’s at least 20 years from being Batman.
There are some interesting ideas at play. I just hope they don’t screw it up.

re: #482 Lidane
Sure.

Problem is that what makes Batman such an interesting character is the villains he fights. It’s why they had to introduce the Joker and then eventually the rest of his rogues gallery, as they needed somebody who was dangerous enough that a vigilante was needed to protect the people of the city.
Otherwise, it would just be a guy in a mask fighting two-bit crooks in a crooked city where the mob ruled.

Given that the show is on FOX wouldn’t the descent of Gotham only take the election of a black mayor?

I enjoyed the ZAP!!!! POW!!!! Batman comedy series of the ‘60’s where celebrities appeared as “special guest villains”

re: #454 Targetpractice
General rule in epidemiology is that the faster that a disease burns out its victim, the slower the spread and the worse the odds are of a widespread outbreak. Ebola can lay dormant for weeks, but it generally kills in a matter of days or hours, and it is only truly infectious in that time period. And unless the victim’s body is handled without protection against bodily fluids, then the virus can’t spread.
Makes sense. Any organism that destroys its food source and/or breeding ground before it spreads is a failure in evolutionary terms.
I’m now wondering if that makes humanity a failure at the rate we’re destroying the world we live in.

Way to fearmonger, Dallas Morning News.
If the kids don’t have symptoms they are not infectious.
But the other parents won’t care about that little detail.

re: #486 Targetpractice
Sure. The biggest obstacle for Gotham, though, is the fact that they start right with the Wayne murders. Bruce is still a kid. He’s nowhere near becoming Batman. They can introduce all the villains, but without Batman it makes things that much more difficult. I mean, I like the lead actors and I like where they’re going with Penguin, but it’s the long-term future of the show that’s in doubt for me.
Unless Season 2 punches things forward a few years I don’t know how they’re going to keep the show going after this season. Bruce Wayne is at least 20 years out from wearing a cape and cowl. Sustaining the show for the long term is going to be a challenge.

Maybe we’re looking at it backwards — Bruce and the villains are all supporting characters, this is Commissioner Gordon’s origin story.

Possibly. But you can’t sell it that way to the network and get it funded. So young Bruce is a front.

I’m just shocked they haven’t featured a black person defending American slavery.
I’m sure it’s not from lack of trying.
That’s Glenn Beck’s wheelhouse. He had some schmuck on just the other day saying how much better off all Teh Blah’s were in the Jim Crow era.
That said, I do think I remember something similar to that from Fox. I would hit the googles but I keep getting called into meetings. I will get back to you.
