ActBlue is just a clearinghouse for liberal political contributions. You can either donate to an individual politician or else (as in the case over at Balloon Juice) donate to a pool that will cover a range of politicians, such as a pool that will split funds between all liberal candidates trying to unseat an incumbent republican. You get to make that choice. I’ve donated through them before without any problems. If I remember right, they ask for a donation to fund themselves, but I don’t think a fee is pulled out of your donation. Sorry this is kind of late.

I use ActBlue for some candidates—usually when the campaigns are trying to create enthusiasm and awareness, and often for registering/paying for events (I actively encourage our groups to register events with ActBlue instead of groups like EventBrite.)
Last time I did a comparison of the two for events:
Act Blue
3.95% transaction fee
Mails checks on Monday with funds raised through Sunday
EventBrite
2.5% service fee
Plus $.99 per ticket
Plus 3% credit card processing fee
Pays 5 days after event
I also donate directly to some candidates. I am now on every freaking mailing list known to mankind.

OTAY MESA, Calif. (KGTV) - A construction worker erecting the US-Mexico border wall prototypes in Otay Mesa fell 40 feet into a hole Wednesday.
The accident happened at the construction site at 10 a.m. The hole was 3 feet in diameter and the worker was able to extend his elbows to slow his fall, his employer said.
An ambulance arrived at the scene to treat the man’s scraped elbows and he resumed work within 30 minutes.
U.S. Border Patrol issued a statement on the incident:
Today at about 10:00 a.m., a construction employee fell down a 40-foot hole at the border wall prototype construction site near the U.S./Mexico international border in Otay Mesa. The employee was able to break his fall during his decent and did not sustain any injuries. The employee was medically evaluated and was cleared to return to work. The employee was working on behalf of one of the companies selected to construct a border wall prototype.

Ugh. Check out this disgusting HHS response to news that they are sabotaging the affordable care act.
“The department responded to Vox’s inquiry about the change in part by criticizing the law it is responsible for overseeing.
“Marketplace enrollment events are organized and implemented by outside groups with their own agendas, not HHS. These events may continue regardless of HHS participation,” HHS spokesperson Caitlin Oakley said in a statement. “As Obamacare continues to collapse, HHS is carefully evaluating how we can best serve the American people who continue to be harmed by Obamacare’s failures.”“

I pulled out some old lps that I have that were issued by radio stations in the late 60’s. — Jeff Furlington (@FurlingtonJeff) September 28, 2017
Long time ago.
I am trying, sincerely, to respect that some of the people I consider friends on my FB feed have a much more visceral reaction than I do to symbols and pageantry.
I know I’m not predisposed to that sort of thing. Mine isn’t a military family, my reform Jewish upbringing has trained me to question pretty much any form of establishment authority, and I’m a city-dweller from a blue community, not to mention a liberal-arts graduate who studied at an effete East Coast college. The whole “my flag, my country, right or wrong” thing is simply alien to me, and I’m not afraid to admit that.
But: I have a flag (made in the USA, bought from the local shop run by Vietnam vets), I fly that flag proudly on holidays, one of maybe three houses on my block that does. I can (and will) talk your ear off about all the good things that this country made possible for my ancestors who came over from eastern Europe in the 19th century. I love this country…but I love it flaws and all.
I really want to believe that there’s something more than just reflexive jingoism going on with my friends who are reacting so very strongly to “they’re disrespecting my country.” I’d really love to be able to have a conversation with them about the meaning of the “freedom” that our troops fight for, and about the difference between a symbol and the ideals that a symbol represents. But it’s not happening, and my attempts to make it happen on FB in the last few days have ended badly.
I’m really scared that 45 has tapped into something even stronger than he realized here. Even if it’s just a fraction of his dead-end 35%, I’m starting to believe that he’s mobilizing something potentially really, really ugly here. And I very much do not like it.

When someone like me definitively comes out and says the right wing is a bunch of fascist assholes and they SUCK, it’s very important for their most influential demagogues to mount a smear campaign against the heretic.
Not just to discredit the target, although that’s the most important goal. But the viciousness is also a message to anyone else who might be having second thoughts about the movement, letting them know they’re in for a world of hurt if they follow me.
And it worked pretty well - very few of the bloggers who had previously been friends and allies backed me up. I’m eternally grateful to the ones who did, like lawhawk.

They’re mad because someone’s making them uncomfortable and telling them that this place ain’t perfect and it’s partly their fault. Never heard of him as far as I am aware. I did a google image search. The dude looks like he could be a piece of work. Seems he has several ‘looks’ like he is almost a multiple personality disorder candidate. Or he changes his image to avoid something.
I learned about him during the Steubenville rape debacle. Someone brought him in to report on the dodgy values of the victim and the people who supported her. He seems to be a freelance shithead. (I hate to do the “both sides” thing, but in the Steubenville case there was a lot of fake shit going around about people who couldn’t have been involved; but you’re an Ohio person, so you know that already.)

Now that you mention that about Steubenville, bells are ringing. I might have caught that name in something when reading about that whole thing.
Thanks. Going to do a little searching on that when I get some time.

re: #186 Charles Johnson
When someone like me definitively comes out and says the right wing is a bunch of fascist assholes and they SUCK, it’s very important for their most influential demagogues to mount a smear campaign against the heretic.
Not just to discredit the target, although that’s the most important goal. But the viciousness is also a message to anyone else who might be having second thoughts about the movement, letting them know they’re in for a world of hurt if they follow me.
And it worked pretty well - very few of the bloggers who had previously been friends and allies backed me up. I’m eternally grateful to the ones who did, like lawhawk.
“Toe the line or else!”
Sounds pretty authoritarian of them to me, and Exhibit #1 of why you were right to bail on them to begin with, Charles.

My dad’s theory about the founding of Dallas: The first wagon train going west is nearing the present-day location of Fort Worth. The wagonmaster calls a halt and says, “Oh, hell, it’s just getting worse. Might as well go back to that last place.”
I served to protect the protesters from people who would deny them the ability to protest either through their words or their actions.

Sri Lankan monks lead attacks against Rohingyas at refugee camp:
Colombo (AFP) - Radical Buddhist monks stormed a United Nations safe house for Rohingya refugees near Sri Lanka’s capital Tuesday and forced authorities to relocate the group, officials said.
Saffron-robed Buddhist monks led a mob that broke down gates and entered the walled multi-storied compound at the Mount Lavinia suburb of Colombo as frightened refugees huddled together in upstairs rooms, a police official said.
Two police were wounded in the incident, which also saw the mob pelt stones at the safe house and trash the ground floor furnishings upon entry.
There were no reports of casualties among the group of refugees, which included 16 children.
“We have pushed back the mob and the refugees have been relocated in a safer place,” the official told AFP, asking not to be named as he was not authorised to speak to the media.
Police said they were going through local media video footage as well as Facebook in the hopes of arresting those who took part in the violence, and the monks who incited them.
One of the monks who stormed the building posted a video on the social networking site filmed by his radical group Sinhale Jathika Balamuluwa (Sinhalese National Force) as he urged others to join him and smash the premises.
“These are Rohingya terrorists who killed Buddhist monks in Myanmar,” the monk said in his live commentary, pointing to Rohingya mothers with small children in their arms.
The 31 Rohingya refugees were rescued by the Sri Lankan navy about five months ago after they were found drifting in a boat off the island’s northern waters. They were thought to be victims of a people smuggler.
They were eventually to be resettled in a third country, the official said, adding that they were authorised to remain in Sri Lanka pending the processing of their papers.
Sri Lanka’s extremist Buddhist monks have close links with their ultra-nationalist counterparts in Myanmar. Both have been accused of orchestrating violence against minority Muslims in the two countries.
Hundreds of thousands of Rohingya Muslims have fled Myanmar in the face of the current wave of violence there.
The Rohingya Muslims have been the target of decades of state-backed persecution and discrimination in mainly Buddhist Myanmar.
Many view them as illegal immigrants from Bangladesh, despite their long-established roots in the country.

Consequences for fucking up are strictly for the little guy, just like taxes (Leona Helmsley, and now the GOP).
Just a reminder: Leona Helmsley was convicted of tax evasion and served time. Of course, if the GOP gets its wish, no billionaire would pay taxes again; only those of modest means

The rot continues.
There are a lot of good reasons to get rid of the Jones Act, but seriously, waiving it wouldn’t save a single life. There are barges full of relief supplies already there that can’t unload because of the limited port capacity. There are dock yards full of supplies that are already unloaded in San Juan that can’t be delivered because of diesel shortages and unpassable roads. Having foreign flagged ships sitting out there alongside the american flagged ships isn’t going to get stuff to people who need it any faster.
It was waived during Harvey mainly to keep oil shipments to the east coast moving, not so much for relief efforts.

They do ok work. BUT - And this is a big but - they can be stupid in trying to get progressives elected in deep red areas. Which, BTW, I’m all for, but you just can’t. Those are the areas that you have to accept Blue dogs or Roy Moore like assholes.
If you go with them, watch their monthly option. I would up with that once and didn’t want it.
That’s happened to me several times. It’s too easy to overlook that it is automatically selected in certain situations. Note that even when you go to a candidate’s actual web site, the donate link usually leads to ActBlue.
