Yes. The upper midwest, especially, has had an abnormally cool summer. Good for crop yields! The rest of the planet? Eh, not so much. Damn hot, with the highest sea surface temperatures for any July on record.

Japan is currently voting in an election that many say will be "historic". It looks like the LDP (which has ruled Japan for nearly all the postwar period) will get its butt kicked. We'll know in the morning, but one thing that is likely once the DPJ is in power is a slow change in the US-Japan relationship.
In the meantime... terminal cuteness from Japan:

Oh, dear. Please consider the source. NOAA hasn't responded because they don't have to. The data is the data. Every time this happens, someone starts a bad data/conspiracy theory on the Net. People without any kind of verifiable and reproducible proof, it should be noted, unlike NOAA's hard facts. That's not science.

Please do so, but keep in mind that his argument is based on vapor, not fact. NOAA is rock solid and has no axe to grind. They report the data, without spin.
Unless you believe in some conspiracy theory that NOAA is cooking the books for some nefarious plan. In which case...

Eucalyptus brush and trees are very oily. It has a tendency to burn explosively. Australian wildfires can be very bad.

No shit. Those things go up like tiki torches. But the pines in the Cali mountains are similar. When it's dry they get explosive in the advance of a firewall. And don't forget that lots of folks in S. Cali have planted eucalyptus as "ornamentals", though probably not (thank God) in the fire areas.

The really big problem in the Laguna fire, was the Palm fronds caught fire & blew several blocks, to start a new fire. The burned house pattern was able to be traced to specific Palm trees. It was random, until you looked at the wind pattern & the Palm locations.

In the suburban areas, during recent fires here the eucalyptus trees, as expected, were a disaster waiting to happen. They are beautiful trees, especially to photograph, but they are not what I would plant.

Frankly, when it comes to climatological data I don't know what I'm looking at. However, the data is available from NOAA for anyone to view:
State of the Climate - Global Analysis - July 2009
Here we find the statement cited by the news regarding global ocean surface temperature for July 2009:
The global ocean surface temperature for July 2009 was the warmest on record, 0.59°C (1.06°F) above the 20th century average of 16.4°C (61.5°F). This broke the previous July record set in 1998. The July ocean surface temperature departure from the long-term average equals June 2009 value, which was also a record.
If you scroll down you'll find "Temperature Rankings and Graphics" which shows the increase in the average from the record in 1998:
Ocean
July 2009 was +0.59°C or +1.06°F 1st Warmest
July 1998 was +0.58° or 1.04°F Previous Record
The record was set by an increase of 1/100th C. or 2/100th F. It is interesting to note that they show that northern and southern hemisphere ocean temps rank as 2nd warmest. Increasing Pacific equatorial temps are "indicative of a developing El Niño."
___
Global land temperatures +0.51°C (+0.92°F) or 9th warmest so there was not record increase there.
Nationally for July of 2009 has the following temperatue highlights:
For the contiguous United States the average July temperature of 73.5°F was 0.8°F below the 20th century average and ranked as the 27th coolest July on record, based on preliminary data.
An abnormally strong and persistent upper-level pattern during the month helped produce a large number of record low temperatures east of the Rockies, while warmth was focused west of the Rockies.
while
Three western states recorded an average temperature that was much above normal for the month of July: Arizona experienced its third warmest, while New Mexico and Washington each had its ninth warmest July on record.
Looking at the ice cap data does not make one optimistic. The ocean temp increase was basically by 1/100th C. above the previous record in 1998 of 20th century average of 16.4°C so perhaps it was overstated by the media.
In the end I'll leave this to the experts at NOAA and the National Climatic Data Center.

you'd have to ask Swimmer about the temps there... as for the AC, our house in 1940's construction, with nice thick walls. we installed two atic fans to keep it at ambient, and with the new double windows, the house stays relatively cool all day, as we power vent in the cool evening air all night, sealing everything up in the early morning...

I have never posted a link in the spin offs..Why would anyone do that?
Most people don't have time to read an entire thread of comments, and find the links therein. Linking in the spinoffs gives casual readers, or those who find they don't have enough time to sift through the threads for links, to see links to other important stories. Or, the goofy humor links I post.
Anyway, Pat has claimed that he is not allowed to post links in the spinoffs. I am trying to get him to tell exactly how that is. How is it that Pat is not allowed the same privilege that the rest of us enjoy here?
I suspect that Pat is lying in an attempt to cravenly libel our host while playing the role of the victim. I wait for him to prove me wrong.

re: #91 redc1c4
you'd have to ask Swimmer about the temps there... as for the AC, our house in 1940's construction, with nice thick walls. we installed two atic fans to keep it at ambient, and with the new double windows, the house stays relatively cool all day, as we power vent in the cool evening air all night, sealing everything up in the early morning...
it's kinda like living in an igloo cooler, but it gets the j*b done. our house is cooler than the neighbors, and they've got AC. %-)
The smartest thing we ever did was put on a galvalum metal roof after a huge hailstorm burgerized our 'hood in 1999. We paid the difference between the replacement cost of the compound roof vs. the metal (about $1,800), but it dropped our electric costs by 40% in the summer (it is its own radiant barrier) and we got a 10% discount on the homeowner's insurance. An absolute win-win. It has already paid for itself, and then some.

The idea he was tossing around was putting a limit on spinoffs from certain IP address, those that usually get "blog pimped", and not a limit on the links themselves or certain users.
If he finally decided to implement this, I am sure he would have made some kind of announcement. Of course, I could have easily missed such an announcement had it been made, so who knows?

Please do so, but keep in mind that his argument is based on vapor, not fact. NOAA is rock solid and has no axe to grind. They report the data, without spin.
Unless you believe in some conspiracy theory that NOAA is cooking the books for some nefarious plan. In which case...
Refer to Nirthers, Troofers, &c.
The scientists at NOAA and NASA certainly deserve respect for the work that they do, and are working with the best data that they have and the best models that they've made, but they are as human and fallible as the rest of us.
My Vulcanology professor at Penn State told me a story about a lecture in the 1950's where fist fight broke out because one scientist that supported the well-established Cooling Earth Theory felt the need to physically defend the facts that were being challenged by a young upstart that was explaining the new Plate Tectonics Theory. The elder scientist insisted it was just warmed up Continental Drift Theory and shouldn't even have been considered.
Maybe Dr. Roy Spencer, who is a former NASA climatologist specializing in satellite data, did really find an anomaly. Or maybe he didn't. And maybe the NOAA scientists believe the data is in the expected range and don't see the need to check their equipment. Maybe they're right. Maybe not. Either way, Dr. Spencer doesn't seem to be a complete crackpot. He's obviously got a problem with evolution and would probably make a lousy biologist, but I think he's worth recognizing in his field of expertise.
As much as Al Gore and many others may whole-heartedly insist that Man-made Global Warming Theory is settled science because of a consensus, it simply isn't true. There is still quite a lot of doubt and some good alternate theories. One of which, we may have the opportunity to observe over the next few decades. It seems that our sun is going through an unusually quiet period of activity. It won't be confirmed for another year or two if we are actually in an extended solar minimum, but if we are, historically such events have coincided with cooler than average global temperatures.
Maybe in a few years, we'll have better evidence for a Solar Cycle Global Climate Change Theory than a the Human Emitted CO2 one. Or maybe not. But I'm looking forward to finding out, one way or the other.

SB, apparently my links, primarily scientific, are too controversial. To be more concise, I believe that AGW is entirely unproven. And likely to be considered as likely as Copernicus' theory of the mathematical certitude of planetary orbits.
Pat, a couple of people have mentioned over the last week that they temporarily couldn't seem to post in the spinoffs, IIRC. It's a little burp in the matrix that goes away soon. I really wouldn't freak out or feel like it's personal. Charles did mention an idea about limiting blogpimping, but AFAIK his last word on it was something like "There are a lot of different issues that I need to think about here to make it work correctly". (paraphrase, not quote)
And btw, also AFAIK, Copernican theory didn't propose anything about the 'mathematical certitude of planetary orbits". The strange thing about the acceptance of Copernican theory is that at the time, it couldn't easily account for retrograde motion of the planets or their orbits in general-- that had to wait for Johannes Kepler. (Copernican theory was more compact than the Ptolemaic, hence its adoption)
Thomas Kuhn has an excellent book that illustrates this as a classic example of paradigm shift:
The Copernican Revolution: Planetary Astronomy in the Development of Western Thought.

Sorry, was a bit sloppy there: the Copernican theory DID make for a much tidier, more compact explanation of the phenomena of retrograde motion than did the Ptolemaic theory -- but it didn't add predictive power; in fact it lost predictive power. It wasn't until Kepler and the discovery that the planets' orbits were elliptical that the Copernican theory gained that predictive power-- but it was already preferred over the Ptolemaic because of its explanatory compactness and comparative simplicity. Hence why it's of interest regarding the structure of scientific revolutions and paradigm shifts.

Meanwhile, over in Japan the turnout in the election, as of 4PM, is running slightly behind the previous election (41.83% vs 42.57%), which is curious.
There was, supposedly, wide discontentment with the current gov't, more due to the economy than anything else. Japan's economy has taken quite a hit, being export driven.
One concern is that the electorate has turned too cynical. Sound familiar?

re: #62 pat
It is a shame i am not allowed to link here in the topical Spinoff section. This seems a worthy article.
Obama's Court Jews; the Rise of J Street[Link: www.americanthinker.com...]
He responded with a typical, political non-answer, answer here:
re: #70 pat
SB, apparently my links, primarily scientific, are too controversial. To be more concise, I believe that AGW is entirely unproven. And likely to be considered as likely as Copernicus' theory of the mathematical certitude of planetary orbits.
Not presenting any evidence as to how he was being prevented from linking, but why he thought he was being prevented from linking. Not a declarative statement about who is preventing him from the privilege of linking in the spinoffs, but rather an odd sort of unsubstantiated guess as to why.
Which, considering his choice of words, sounds much like someone with a persecution complex. Like he has some kind of truth to tell, and someone is stopping him from telling it.
I've asked further questions, hoping Pat would clarify what he meant, and received no answer, despite the fact that this thread is moving very slow, and he was still logged in until just recently.
With all that in mind, I am left to conclude that...

Oh hoops--great review! If you liked it, I highly recommend the novel it was based on, (published in like 54 or something) which is hella more creepy. A LOT of interesting subtext was left out! LOTS.
I'd also recommend Ripley's Game, starring John Malkovitch as Ripley. Patricia Highsmith did a number of Ripley novels over the years. Ripley's Game is a much older Ripley, still scheming, still devastating.

If I was wrong in my assessment of Pat's intentions with his original post, he could have easily clarified his intentions. He chose not to do so, even though he was still here for at least an hour and a half after I pressed him for clarity.
Normally, I tend to let things go. But when I see someone that I perceive to be lying about our host or about our community, I can become something of an asshole. When they dodge questions with political non-answers, I can become a bulldog with a bone. And twice the asshole I already am.
If Pat was experiencing technical difficulties with posting spinoff links, he could have asked someone about it, or sent Charles an email about it. Instead, it would seem that he chose to go with the "I'm not allowed post links" line.

Speaking of Petrified Opinion, a liberal never left a metaphor on the table if it smeared America.
[Link: www.americanthinker.com...]
WTF? Downding. First you smear all liberals. Then you link to American Thinker, which really now should be called American Stinker, given its willingness to publish Atlas Shrieks and that moron Jack Cashill who thinks Bill Ayers ghostwrote Obama's autobiographies.
And then you link an article BY the throroughly discredited Cashill which claims that Michiko Kakutani, the extremely well-read, extremely influential, book reviewer for the NYT-- plagiarised Cashill when she made some allusions to the Odyssey in reviewing Obama's books.
Yeah. Because no one ever in the history of the world, or literature, would ever think to reference Homer, especially when reviewing a man's autobiography describing a journey or a quest, involving fathers and sons
Sure. Kakutani had to be plagiarisng the brilliant Jack Cashill, who believes that Ayers had to have written Obama's books because "they use the word ballast in a metaphorical sense, and I'm so illiterate that I've never heard that before!"
EPIC AVALANCHE OF FAIL

Because Jack Cashill's attempt at 'literary analysis' pisses me off so much, I have to post this. Behold the genius of his perception!
Obama [describes in Dreams a]"yellow dog with a baleful howl." In [Ayers'] Fugitive Days [...] he uses the word "baleful" to describe an "eye". For the record, "baleful" means "threatening harm." I had to look it up.
Here is Cashill's 'literary analysis' in a nutshell:
1. Hey, Ayers and Obama both used a word I didn't know!
2. That proves Ayers wrote Obama's books! BLARGH YARGH SCREECH LIBERALS ANARCHISTS TERRORISTS CONSPIRACY GAAAHH Ph'nglui mglw'nafh OBAMA R'lyeh wgah'nagl fhtagn! [sound of yakkety sax] [sound of tripping, falling, breaking].

I'm on my third page.
He also has a major exam in science, covering the first four chapters and there are some words and concepts I didn't learn until the eighth grade, high school and college. The completed study guide is six pages long. Six!
Then, there is a comprehensive exam over the first three chapters in math and ditto for English--predicates, prepositions, et bloody cet.
In addition to the regular vocabulary and spelling tests, every day this week but one has an exam.
I've done the study guides this time so he'll have an example of how to do them the rest of the year.

Polling is about to shut down here or just has, and the results will continue to be collected and certified. Meanwhile, they might as well stop counting now. It is a slaughter. The leftist DPJ has enjoyed a four or five to one victory over the center-rightist LDP, counting seats in the new parliament.
Japan is a country with five leftist parties and one centrist (with occasional right-leaning tendency) party, measured on an American scale. There is now only one leftist party which matters, the DPJ, and the LDP will be forced to rely upon a mix of gratitude, charity, and solemn promises conditional upon elections for continued influence.
The LDP will remain popular in fly-over country, but that's about it. And right now, that's not enough.
Ironically, one of the reasons for the growing popularity of the leftist DPJ was the perception that Japan too often simply did whatever America did, under the somewhat rightist leadership of the LDP.
Stand by for the unravelling of the Pacific system. China will not refrain from their own pursuits while the Pacific system re-cycles. They will do whatever they can to return to an Asia-centered regional system. The North Korean regime has just been given a new lease on life, one might say at the direct expense of Taiwan.

Geez, we're not even going to break out of the mid-60s today; I had a sweater on last night. Looks like the rest of the week will remain in the low 70s, at best. We're normally well into the 80s this time of year.

REMORSE?!
300 | 3 wood Sun, Aug 30, 2009 6:01:31am |
Look's like Reid has put his foot in it:
SHERMAN FREDERICK: Enough is enough, Harry
On Wednesday, before he addressed a Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce luncheon, Reid joined the chamber's board members for a meet-'n'-greet and a photo. One of the last in line was the Review-Journal's director of advertising, Bob Brown, a hard-working Nevadan who toils every day on behalf of advertisers. He has nothing to do with news coverage or the opinion pages of the Review-Journal.Yet, as Bob shook hands with our senior U.S. senator in what should have been nothing but a gracious business setting, Reid said: "I hope you go out of business."
Later, in his public speech, Reid said he wanted to let everyone know that he wants the Review-Journal to continue selling advertising because the Las Vegas Sun is delivered inside the Review-Journal.
Such behavior cannot go unchallenged.
You could call Reid's remark ugly and be right. It certainly was boorish. Asinine? That goes without saying.
But to fully capture the magnitude of Reid's remark (and to stop him from doing the same thing to others) it must be called what it was -- a full-on threat perpetrated by a bully who has forgotten that he was elected to office to protect Nevadans, not sound like he's shaking them down.
The arrogance of the left knows no bounds. The paper had this promise for Senator Reid:
For the sake of all who live and work in Nevada, we can't let this bully behavior pass without calling out Sen. Reid. If he'll try it with the Review-Journal, you can bet that he's tried it with others. So today, we serve notice on Sen. Reid that this creepy tactic will not be tolerated.
We won't allow you to bully us. And if you try it with anyone else, count on going through us first.
That's a promise, not a threat.
And it's a promise to our readers, not to you, Sen. Reid.
We will see.

Stocks face end-of-summer lull before payroll data
SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- With end-of-summer vacations in full swing, U.S. stocks markets face a sluggish week capped by a potential burst of activity when the government releases its August jobs report.
Light volumes have made for choppy trading in recent days, with benchmark indexes flip-flopping throughout the course of the day. Activity has clustered on a few financial stocks, including Citigroup (C 5.23, +0.18, +3.56%) and Bank of America Corp. (BAC 17.98, +0.06, +0.33%)
That trend is likely to continue into the first week of September, despite a slate of key economic data, as more investors head to the beach.
"It's usually one of the slowest weeks of the year," said Michael O'Rourke, chief market strategist at New York institutional brokerage BTIG on Friday, as he prepared to leave the office for a family vacation at the New Jersey shore.

No hairballs from my cats. Yet at least.
But my big one DOES bring the laundry up. Think I'm kidding? I was watching TV last night (Mail Call!) and he brought 2 socks & a t-shirt up, and a 2nd shirt appeared while I was doing the dishes. Got to get a video of him carrying a t-shirt in his mouth.
We kept finding toys all over the first floor, even after my daughter no longer played with them and they were stored in the basement.
Could it be poltergeists?
Nope, just a crazy cat who carried and dropped everything from plastic fruit to bottles of paint.

Actually, the main things to remember from the song of Deborah are:
1) The text makes it clear that in early Israel women were the carriers of the oral tradition.
2) The whole thing is a great joke. Sisera does get the girl and the "spoil of dyed cloth," albeit not quite in the way he and his mommy imagined it.

Most of the judges were warriors, but the main role is as "law speaker -- the person who remembers and speaks the law. The story of Deborah suggests a period distinction of roles -- a military leader and a judge; that same distinction appears with the origins of the monarchy.
The law was still oral tradition, and there is a line in the song of Deborah about how women sing the tale. There is a parallel reference in the two versions of the Song of the Sea after the destruction of the Egyptians.

Seriously, my young gel is about to learn Latin at school. She's entering 7th grade, and it sounds as though she'll be using the same course material that I used. It's a somewhat misguided attempt to teach Latin without too much grammar. This is not a good idea, in my opinion, for a language where you really can't hope to understand it unless you have a good grasp of the underlying grammar.

I think you're missing the point:
Loyalty to petrified opinion never yet broke a chain, or freed a human soul.
What I take Twain to mean is fear. Clinging to fear isn't what frees people, it's courage and bravery. Or, as Yoda said: Fear leads to anger, anger leads to hate, hate leads to suffering.

re: #415 realwest
Good morning reine! Do you like google chrome? Is it very much different - from a user friendly perspective, than FireFox or IE 7?
Realwest - I do like google chrome.
IE didn't work well.
Firefox, for some reason, was susecptible to picking up bugs that screwed it up when I tried to use it.
Safari would crash on me periodically.
Chrome, thus far, has been the most reliable for me to use. I easily imported all my bookmarks, etc. - I can have multiple tabs open, just like IE or firefox - it just has worked better for me than any of the others.

Morning all.
Remember that story about the "misogynist hawks" and the "War on Misogyny" re-label? I remember people thinking that we might see the beginning of a meme from the Lefties. Anyway, in today's local paper we had this article. It's mainly an inchoate ramble about population growth in Afghanistan, but it includes this money quote:
"This feudal, fundamentalist, warrior society will never join the 21st century -- or even the 16th century -- unless we win the war to liberate women."
The article is actually dated the 23rd but I didn't realize that until just now.

For those who haven't seen the worst one, here's the link:
British soldiers banned from using live bullets to save money
From that link:
'British soldiers are being forced to train with blanks rather than live rounds to save money.
The entire Territorial Army (TA) and a number of nonfrontline regular army units will be affected by the ban on the use of real bullets in personal weapons, according to defence sources.'
And while some dyed-in-the-wool NuLab tribalists still think and say that everything is done for the Army, see this, from the link above:
'Although the government claims the full cost of operations abroad is funded separately from the defence budget, the Treasury reduces the figure by about half to take into account costs that are not incurred in the UK because the troops are in Afghanistan.'
(My emphasis)
Frankly, I'm sick with anger.

Another very cool morning here. Had to either close the windows or turn the furnace on last night. The pool temperature is a shrinkage-inducing 65 degrees. Summer '09 is on the back of the milk carton. We've had only a handful of days in the 90s all Summer. Which is kind of nice actually. We saved a ton of money on the electric bill as the AC sat idle for weeks at a time.

It's difficult to believe that the cost of blanks is signficantly cheaper than the cost of an actual round. The bullet itself doesn't cost much at all; the cartridge, primer and powder are the same regardless of whether it's a blank or a live round. I'd guess we're talking fractions of a penny savings here.
It seems to me that, you know, actually being able to see that you've hit something might be important training. How about dropping, say, one out of five or one out of ten training sessions, if costs are such an obstacle?

Hey yma!
Don't know if it's available in the UK yet, but thought you might be interested in this book (I'll wait for the peaperback)
CROW PLANET: Essential Wisdom From the Urban Wilderness
Did you know that crows recognize human faces? To prove this, she writes, a researcher at the University of Washington conducted an experiment. Volunteers who had captured and banded crows (something crows resent) while wearing caveman masks were cawed at and dive-bombed whenever they re-entered crow precincts. When the same volunteers walked through the crow zone with their faces hidden by Dick Cheney masks, “the crows left them entirely alone.” (Presumably, this reflected no political bias.) Affectingly, Haupt describes “crow funerals” in which a “stillness” settles around a deceased bird as other crows “cluster about the crow in perfect silence,” and records evidence of crows at play — basking in the sun, “sprawled on one side with their wings hanging open . . . like black-feathered Madame Bovarys” or catching falling cherry blossoms.
[ ]
And while she may hesitate to anthropomorphize the bird, she is unable to avoid, in one instance, caninifying it — comparing a brood of fledglings who landed on her lawn and uprooted her seedling carrots to playful Labrador puppies. She gently spritzed the young crows with a hose, hoping they’d flutter away and spare her crop. “Instead,” she writes, “all four of them gathered under the spray, flapped their wings and opened their bills, in what appeared to be absolute joy. I laughed, but in that slightly imbalanced way that could turn into crying if someone looked at me the wrong way.” Over the next few days, she brought out the hose again so they could play some more.

The reason you can't drop training sessions is that the soldiers need to show proficiency and need to keep their skill levels up.
This is just another typical NuLab exercise: claw money back and/or save where people are not in a situation to complain.
But make pretty announcements of how extraordinarily vast sums you're spending ...
Its a proven NuLAb strategy: double announcements of funding, claw-backs hidden away. Worked in the early days - now people have cottoned on to this.
They do it in other sectors of the public services as well.

To the best of my memory It seemed to want something called xul.dll? I'm not completly computer literate so don't quote me on that. So I went with Safari for Windows. That's what happened to me with firefox. It's been infected with some sort of bug. Try chrome.

Gord is pathetic..Do you think he is on his way out? please?
He definitely is, even the raving loonies writing in the Guardian think so.
The NuLab consorts of Gord, and he himself, are now doing all they can to tie Dave Cameron and the Tories into policies which they cannot back out of (so they think).
They believe that perhaps they might still win if they can manipulate the Tories into looking harsh and unfeeling - but the whole country knows that there isn't any money left in the till, and that the huge debts, thanks to Gord and NuLab, will have to be paid back.

by Rudyard Kipling (1865-1936)
I went into a public-'ouse to get a pint o' beer,
The publican 'e up an' sez, "We serve no red-coats here."
The girls be'ind the bar they laughed an' giggled fit to die,
I outs into the street again an' to myself sez I:
O it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Tommy, go away";
But it's "Thank you, Mister Atkins", when the band begins to play,
The band begins to play, my boys, the band begins to play,
O it's "Thank you, Mister Atkins", when the band begins to play.
I went into a theatre as sober as could be,
They gave a drunk civilian room, but 'adn't none for me;
They sent me to the gallery or round the music-'alls,
But when it comes to fightin', Lord! they'll shove me in the stalls!
For it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Tommy, wait outside";
But it's "Special train for Atkins" when the trooper's on the tide,
The troopship's on the tide, my boys, the troopship's on the tide,
O it's "Special train for Atkins" when the trooper's on the tide.
Yes, makin' mock o' uniforms that guard you while you sleep
Is cheaper than them uniforms, an' they're starvation cheap;
An' hustlin' drunken soldiers when they're goin' large a bit
Is five times better business than paradin' in full kit.
Then it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Tommy, 'ow's yer soul?"
But it's "Thin red line of 'eroes" when the drums begin to roll,
The drums begin to roll, my boys, the drums begin to roll,
O it's "Thin red line of 'eroes" when the drums begin to roll.
We aren't no thin red 'eroes, nor we aren't no blackguards too,
But single men in barricks, most remarkable like you;
An' if sometimes our conduck isn't all your fancy paints,
Why, single men in barricks don't grow into plaster saints;
While it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Tommy, fall be'ind",
But it's "Please to walk in front, sir", when there's trouble in the wind,
There's trouble in the wind, my boys, there's trouble in the wind,
O it's "Please to walk in front, sir", when there's trouble in the wind.
You talk o' better food for us, an' schools, an' fires, an' all:
We'll wait for extry rations if you treat us rational.
Don't mess about the cook-room slops, but prove it to our face
The Widow's Uniform is not the soldier-man's disgrace.
For it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Chuck him out, the brute!"
But it's "Saviour of 'is country" when the guns begin to shoot;
An' it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' anything you please;
An' Tommy ain't a bloomin' fool -- you bet that Tommy sees!

And there is simply no one in the NuLab Party who is interested to oust him - they all know full well that regardless who leads the party to the coming election, they will lose!
Its only a question by how much.

I think, based on some of the reviews, that the latest mini-series went some way to improving the outlook. I saw a review of the earlier episodes, and they didn't look too interesting. There seemed to be much of "men on men" to keep my interest. The Doctor Who series is good, although I've only seen a few of the episodes, mainly courtesy of Air Canada who seem to have a well-stocked library of Doctor Who episodes. The problem is that the flying time from NY to any major Canadian city east of Toronto isn't long enough to see a whole episode.

I think, based on some of the reviews, that the latest mini-series went some way to improving the outlook.
The killed off half of the cast in the last season; in the miniseries they killed Ianto, got Gwen pregnant (taking her out of the action), and rendered Jack unsympathetic just before he left Earth entirely. There's no one left. Not to mention that their base has also been destroyed.
Supposedly, Torchwood has been renewed; but one wonders exactly who, what, and where Torchwood will be next season.
There seemed to be much of "men on men" to keep my interest.
Men on men, men on women, women on women... Doctor Who was always considered a family show; Torchwood was supposed to be the late-night version for adults.

Well, we pretty much figured out that part. What we can't figure out is why MacAskill is sucking it up.
Thats what I can't figure out, as yet, either.
All I can think of is that there might be some shenanigans behind the scenes between Labour, Scottish Labour and some people in the Scottish Nationalist Party.
There may be some deals in regard to the next Scottish elections, which Labour dearly would like to win (again!).
Knowing the deviousness with which Gord and his cronies operate, nothing would surprise me.

Greetings, lizardia!
It's a beautiful sunny morning here along the lake Michigan shoreline, refreshingly cool with a light breeze and brilliant blue skies. I'm relaxing in the chaise with a cup of coffee and the Sunday paper, and I have a fantastic day on tap with the family. How's everyone else on this fine day?
Imagining a light house on the shore. A friend of mine (now deceased) showed me pictures of (all things light house) in MI.

Thats a typical NuLab 'operation' - promise 'more troops' - but not really for fighting ...
Gord wants to create a situation, before the next election, which will tie the hands of Dave Cameron and the incoming Tories.
Gord's way of operating has become so transparent, everybody knows what he's at, nobody is fooled any longer.
I suspect Sir Richard knows exactly how to deal with this latest 'Gord proposal'. I think your chief in Afghanistan, MacChrystal (sp?) knows Sir Richard from his earlier postings, and will probably be dead keen to help spike Gord's proposal.

I know that a lot of you didn't watch the Kennedy wake/funeral.
I did, from start to finish.
Ted Kennedy was a outspoken liberal, and it was rare for me to be in political agreement with him. But I'm willing to admit today that I secretly admired his tenacity, his many years of service in the Senate, and his lifelong advocacy for the poor, downtrodden and voiceless.
He made many mistakes, of course, and had many personal failures. Some of those mistakes were more glaring than others.
But Kennedy was a quintessential Irishman, and he lived like one. Many unknown and very private details of his personal life were revealed over the course of the last few days, including the touching contents of the letter that he wrote to the Pope. And I can't help but feel that when all was said and done, Kennedy was able to experience forgiveness and redemption for his personal failures and make his peace with God.
In retrospect, I find myself thinking today that I could be doing more with my own life.

Some food for thought here...
A little long but it's a worthwhile read.
From the article:
The consensus forged by Buckley in the 1960s gained strength through two decisive acts: first, Buckley denounced right-wing extremists, such as the members of the John Birch Society, and made sure when he did it to secure the support of conservative Republicans like Reagan, Barry Goldwater, and Sen. John Tower. This pulled the movement toward the center. Second: Buckley saw that the civil disturbances of the late 1960s (in particular urban riots and increasingly militant anti-Vietnam protests) posed a challenge to social harmonies preferred by genuine conservatives and genuine liberals alike. When the Democrat Daniel Patrick Moynihan called on liberals to join with conservatives in upholding "the politics of stability," Buckley replied that he was ready to help. He placed the values of "civil society" (in Burke's term) above those of his own movement or the GOP.Today we see very little evidence of this. In his classic The Future of American Politics (1952), the political journalist Samuel Lubell said that our two-party system in fact consists of periods of alternating one-party rule—there is a majority "sun" party and a minority "moon" party. "It is within the majority party that the issues of any particular period are fought out," Lubell wrote. Thus, in the 1980s, Republicans grasped (and Democrats did not) that new entrepreneurial energies had been unleashed, and also that the Cold War could be brought to a conclusion through strong foreign policy. This was the Republicans' "sun" period. The reverse is happening today. The Democrats now dominate our heliocentric system—first on the economic stimulus, which is already proving to be at least a limited success, and now on the issue of health-care reform. These are both entirely Democratic initiatives. The Republicans, so intent on thwarting Obama, have vacated the field, and left it up to the sun party to accept the full burden of legislating us into the future. If the Democrats succeed, Republicans will be tagged as the party that declined even to help repair a broken system and extend fundamental protections—logical extensions of Social Security and Medicare—to some 46 million people who now don't have them. This could marginalize the right for a generation, if not longer. Rush Limbaugh's stated hope that Obama will fail seems to have become GOP doctrine. This is the attitude not of conservatives, but of radicals, who deplore the very possibility of a virtuous government.
Very interesting article, Killgore.

Interesting indeed - except for one tiny little oversight- the "sun" party never truly controlled all of the apparatus of governement but for a scant 2 years of GW Bush's presidency until now. Thus "The Republicans, so intent on thwarting Obama, have vacated the field, and left it up to the sun party to accept the full burden of legislating us into the future."
Is incorrect - the Republicans haven't "vacated the field" so much as they have no way to get ON the field to play - for now.

That was an interesting read, thanks. I can see some wear and tear around the edges, but do not think that setbacks over the past few years has killed off this movement. Conservatives are not going away, they are still here and although it's hard to believe now, they will be back in power in the future.
The trend now is turning against the Dems. Their agenda is too radical and too fast. It is my estimate that the midterms will be a blood bath on the left. They will lose seats big time. And, I know it's still 3 years off, but unless Obama pulls his head out and gets the economy going, he is looking at the stark reality of a one term Presidency. The pendelum is swing back to the right now Killgore, not the other way.

Why is it that when winter is coming to a close 70 degrees seems so delightful and yet in summer - end of August, really, 70 degrees seems to be SO COLD!?

Michigan may break records and record the coolest summer in history unless there's a major heat wave over the next three weeks.
I mentioned above that I'm growing concerned about wheat and corn harvests. It hasn't been warm enough for them to mature, and if they don't do so soon they'll succumb to the first frosts.
I guess it's hotter than blazes in the Pacific Northwest, though.

It's not one of his greater literary moments.

This passage is worth noting as well...
Buckley saw that the civil disturbances of the late 1960s (in particular urban riots and increasingly militant anti-Vietnam protests) posed a challenge to social harmonies preferred by genuine conservatives and genuine liberals alike. When the Democrat Daniel Patrick Moynihan called on liberals to join with conservatives in upholding "the politics of stability," Buckley replied that he was ready to help. He placed the values of "civil society" (in Burke's term) above those of his own movement or the GOP.
Civil unrest is very unpopular with average people. Radical who foment unrest are not going to be very popular.

Hey Opnion! Well the highs here in Charlotte have been in the upper 80's (yesterday actually 91) or low nineties and tomorrow's "high" is going to be 70 degrees.

We've had the hottest summer on record here in Phoenix as far as "mean temperature". It's not so much the highs, which have been "normal"...it's the lows. Every year, as they pave more and more of the desert, the heat island effect takes over. The mean temperature is going up and up. It is not uncommon now to have the "low" be in the high 90's. That was unheard of when I first moved here. The temps would drop as soon as the sun set...that is no longer the case here now.

It depends on what one means by "average." And what's "the norm." From CBC website: "FLURRIES IN WESTERN LABRADOR IN AUG? Well, it's happened before. In fact, your 30 year average for Snow in August from 1971-2000 in Labrador City is 0.1 cm." Because something's "happened before" doesn't make it "the norm." You'd have to know how the stat has been collected, the frequency, etc...(in other words, I need more detailed info...)

Probably true. It certainly screwed the pooch for the Democrats when International ANSWER and other extremist groups led large protests in several cities and contributed to major defeats in the 2002 midterms and the 2004 Presidential elections, both of which the Republicans probably should have lost except for the backlash against Patented Leftist Weirdoism that exhibited itself.
One of the things Howard Dean managed to do was to stuff the crazies deep into the closet during 2006 and 2008 so they wouldn't drive off the majority of independent voters hovering around the middle. Not a brilliant strategy, but an important one. And one that the GOP needs to study well over the next couple of months, before the 2010 election cycle gets into full swing.

Depends. Ordinary folks are not terribly disturbed by a small group of later middle-aged folks with signs. They are disturbed by large hordes of people with signs proclaiming "Death to Amerikkka" and such. It is a question of just how "civil" the unrest and what it's aims are.
I suspect that the public is far more willing to accept voices spoken in anger when those voices reflect the broad dismay of the general public over the arrogance of the ruling class. But only if the clear end of such discourse is restorative -- re-establishing a more cautious and conservative understanding of the relationship between the state and society. Voices, whether from the Left, the far Right, or the Paulian magnetosphere, that speak in terms of trashing the state or society will not get a forgiving reception.

I pity you; I hate the climate in Phoenix, and avoid going there at all costs.
Even more bizarre than all the construction is the massive misuse of water - fly into the city, after crossing hundreds of miles of desert scrub, and you're suddenly blinded by the enormous gash of thickly-growing lawns and golf courses that carpet the area. The humidity - so rare in the desert - adds to the cloying heat, and indicates that something is terribly wrong and out of balance there. Phoenix needs to come to grips with the fact that they're in the desert, and start living with that in mind.
No personal offense intended - I know it's not the people who've lived there for years causing the problems, but the huge influx of new arrivals bringing their craving for eastern-style landscapes to a place where such things just don't belong.

Realwest, I do think the Republicans have vacated the field; no leadership to speak of, and the "leaders" that are there seem to be buying into a lot of craziness.

Yes, of course. That 46 million number has been promoted so much, and any debunking has been downplayed, it's not surprising to me that we keep seeing it pop up.
Good grief, if there were 46 million American citizens without healthcare of any sort, we sure would see a lot more sick people walking around or dying in the streets, wouldn't we? And we don't see that. Thinking people can just look around as they go about their day to day business to see that that number cannot be accurate.

Referring to your previous post (130), the paragraph I highlighted in my 137 includes the words "may", "seems", and "if". When making a scientific argument, I might suggest that it is best not to use those words.
But hey, I could be wrong! We could base environmental and energy policy on may, seem, and if! That would be outstanding! We'll just wing it!
///
There's always some uncertainty in science. I find it hard to make a strong statement about anything that isn't 100% observed or empirically proven. My weaker language reflects my desire not to be dishonest or misleading. I know speaking or writing in this manner drives some people crazy, but I feel it is necessary. That said, you're suggestion that my assertions are "just winging it" is blatantly false. I have a basis for everything I say and linked to it for you.
I have a challenge for you. Since you believe that man-made global warming is settled science, link to a source that makes an iron-clad case for it. Compelling scientific evidence, not assertions of a consensus, that would lead to the logical conclusion that debate and further study is no longer necessary.
