I do believe that everyone in LA has been told they can't water their lawns because of water shortages - except they caught the mayor doing just that.
I can imagine that shortage is causing some headaches fighting the fires.

These fires should be allowed to burn naturally as they have for eons when lighting strikes occur. Fire prevention only allows the brush to build up to dangerous levels. As long as there is an adequate safety zone around structures the fires should not be put out. The burn will renew the ground and allow fresh growth to take place.
20 | garycooper Sun, Aug 30, 2009 11:00:24am |
Look at the bright side? Some good things do result from wildfires, though it's obviously not ideal if your house stands in the way.
Hope nobody gets killed.
---
Small wildfires have numerous benefits. One is that a series of small fires over a long period of time prevents a devastating large wildfire from occurring. One of the reasons we have a lot of damaging large wildfires today is because for most of the last century, the school of thought was to immediately put out any forest fires. Suppressing natural fires for long can cause just one devastating fire to build up.
Wildfires convert old growth forests into newer growth. Old growth coniferous forests have a thick canopy and little sunlight reaches the forest floor. With little sunlight hitting the forest floor, not many plants can survive there. Consequently there is little food for animals to eat, and relatively few animals live in such an environment. A fire breaks down the canopy and allows the sunlight through, and new growth of numerous plants that could not survive in the shade grow in the sunny environment. Those plants attract animals that feed on them. New growth starts emerging within a couple days after a fire. A month after a fire in a place like a grassland, almost all organic material is new living biomass as opposed to detritus.
There are also plants that are adapted and even depend on periodic fires. This type of natural disturbance to an ecosystem is essential to the savanna and chaparral biomes. Some plants' seeds will only germinate after a hot fire, and fire-resistant roots will allow them to sprout quickly while using nutrients released during the fire. Fire-adapted plants can reach extinction with humans suppressing periodic fires, usually caused by lightning-- that is until an uncontrollable forest fire develops.
It is important to recognize that a forest fire does not consume the trees; the outside burns, but the dead wood is left standing there for sometimes decades. These dead trees provide excellent food source for certain insects (and the animals that eat them), and great habitat for small mammals and birds. Some animals actually favor freshly-burned areas. Black-backed woodpeckers only live in freshly burned stands of trees, for example.

Sgt. Hartman: "Is that a Nirth Certifikit in your footlocker, Pvt. Pyle?"
Ermey Says He’ll 'Square Away' Birthers
Troops challenging the legitimacy of President Barack Obama as commander-in-chief -- including at least one who is fighting deployment -- should take heed: Gunnery Sgt. Hartman wants to know your "major malfunction."R. Lee Ermey, the Marine-turned-actor whose role as drill instructor Gunny Hartman in the late Stanley Kubrick's "Full Metal Jacket" has all but placed the Vietnam veteran in the pantheon of Marine heroes alongside "Chesty" Puller, Smedley Butler and Dan Daly, isn't buying anyone's political objector status.
"I haven't heard about those guys," Ermey told Military.com during an Aug. 21 interview. "If I do run across them though, trust me, I'll square them away."
His take on Obama...
"I'm an Independent. I'm not a Republican, I'm not a Democrat," he said at the time. "I'm a middle-of-the-road guy, and I call on logic and common sense, okay?"Ermey told McCormack that while he voted for George Bush in 2004, he would be just as supportive of John Kerry had he won the presidency, "and I wish more people would be like that."
Of Obama, Ermey said he was "a little wary at first" on how he would handle the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Not now, though.
"I think our president is doing a commendable job," he said. "He picked up where George Bush left off. … We're continuing to take care of the terrorist situation."

You ask a very complex question...Forestry maintenance is very complex..
I went through the Atlas peak fire in Napa as a kid...What are you going to do..burn up the mountain before it catches fire? People talk about degrees..But really when you see a mountain catch fire there is no degrees.. no preparations..no water hose...You get the hell out...Underbrush on a mountain is a joke..Everything burns...
We need some real smart people to advise us...America has made forestry political..And that is not right

You can't water the whole state, and LA pipes their water a long way. It's often rationed come drought time. All it takes is a dropped cigarette sometimes.

Ca is crazy with the extremes. I remember back in the late 1990's (or) early 2000's I flew with my 'fella to San Fran for business and afterward we drove down the coast from Monterey to Morro Bay. We stopped at places like San Simeon. (beautiful!) It was mainly overcast, somewhat rainy, and very green.. Occasionally we'd see a waterfall. CA felt downright tropical.
There were reports of flooding before and after our trip. *CA flooding always releases the funky old green barcalounger down a muddy hillside.

My comments were made more than a little tongue-in-cheek. But, it would be interesting to know how many billions a year fires cost California - not just fighting them, but the capital cost of the damages as well.
It seems that it would have been wise, back in the 30's when the city was really getting built out, to invest in some fire-suppression system, just like they invested in the infrastructure for fresh water and sewer. In LA county, it probably would have paid for it in short order. Now, because of the problems you've mentioned, it's probably unrealistic to build anything worthwhile.

My dad got to me first a taught me to hate the Yankees as evil incarnate and to love (and hate) the Dodgers (the complex jumble of emotions that Brooklyn fans of his era felt for the Dodgers' "betrayal"). So, I was rooting for the Dodgers even before Seattle got a baseball team (not including the Pilots).
That is so cool..I was raised in Northern California so it was always the law that we hate all things Southern Cal. But like a brother or sister...I have a deep affection for all California...I was born in firebaugh and raised in the Valley.. I hate the Lakers with all my heart..Just the thought of Jack Nickelson sitting at his table at 5am after a Lakers lose..Drinking vodka straight...Staring out the window...Robe open, unshaven...It doesn't get any better for the hoopster

Actually there isn't a TV in sight of where I am - I am in the food court area, I just ate 1/2 of a real philly cheesesteak. I am going to regret it later, but it sure tasted good.
Well, thank goodness for small favors. The cheesesteak sounds yummy. Everyone deserves a treat when they have to numb their rears waiting for a plane.

I'm going to have to check my map, but isn't LA very close to an enormous body of water, commonly referred to as the Pacific?
Salt water fights fires just as easily as fresh water.
Some of the scooper planes and copters use the Pacific when the fire is nearby, basically in Malibu. Current fires are all thirty+ miles from the beach.
Palos Verdes (Portugese Bend) fire the other day, was ocean-adjacent.

I'm not aware of brush clearing regulations - except that people *should* clear more than they do.
Up in the mountains, a lot of the pine forest contains dead trees that cannot be cleared for forestry regulations, but that's not what's burning right now.
Not right now ...
Property owners need to be very vigilant about this kind of thing--even letting dead pine needles build on on your roof can create problems.
Of course, when there's a full-gage fire coming your way, you can have cleared as much brush as you like, and it's not going to stop it by itself.

Confused Ed Morrisey answers his own question...
Video: Shea-Porter has constituent arrested at town-hall forum
I’ve watched this video a couple of times, and I still can’t figure out why the police took this man out of the room.
What a mystery!
In the appended video, Shea-Porter can be seen instructing security to remove a man for standing to ask a question without a ticket. Shea-Porter previously held a lottery to determine who could ask questions.
Mystery solved! It was not his turn to speak and he was preventing others from speaking. The title Ed uses is also dishonest. He was escorted out of the meeting, I didn't see any evidence that he was arrested.

The last comment (as of right now) is a beaut:
I read the article out of an interest in scientific discoveries, but seeing some of the comments makes me want to chime in.
First of all I'm an Atheist. There is no god. Period. We're beyond that. Let's move on.
Secondly, I am AGAINST "universal healthcare" and pretty much everything on the socialist agenda. I did not vote for Obama nor do I support him in any way. I am also against religion and "religionism" of any kind.
So, don't ASSUME that just because someone is pro-science and anti-religion he is therefore Liberal, leftwing, socialist, nor indeed supports Democrats or anything on their agenda.

I've wondered about stuff like that, would seem practical to haul some crop-sprinkler hardware out to the fireline and set it up and pump through it, rather than use a couple of hoses, with firemen who might be engulfed if winds blow wrong.
Lot of stuff could probably be done better, but none of it free.

I'm right near the fireline in Sunland and woke up to a very ominous burning of Mount Gleason this morning. LAPD has a mandatory evacuation for a development called "Alpine Village" less than a mile away from my house and I expect it may be my turn next. This fire went from about 5000 acres on Saturday 11 AM to about 35,000 acres this morning, according to the latest from the governors press conference. The entire entrance to the Angeles Crest was socked in by smoke and flames could be seen glowing through the haze. Biggest, baddest, smokiest fire that' I've seen in my 12 years here. I personally witnessed the fire spreading into the Tujunga wash itself, about a mile from my home. Everything's covered with about 2" of ash and I keep getting it in my eyes as the wind picks up. Not a fun day here in SoCal, to be sure. But I am ready to rock if the order comes down. On a side note, I find the lack of coverage from the local TV News Divisions APPALLING. There was more coverage of the Palos Verdes fire which only burned a few hundred acres than there is of this out of control, 35,000 acre fire right in my backyard. Perhaps they could not preempt the EXCESSIVE national news covering the Kennedy funeral ? I really don't know but coverage has been sporadic at best, to say the least.

Once upon a time, there was small community of monks who grew flowers in their gardens, and sold them in the town nearby to support themselves. All was well for many years, but then an aggressive group of friars from another community elbowed in with their own flowers. They undersold the original group, beat them up, and threatened their customers until they bought from the new friars.
Desperate, the original monks looked for a way to buy protection. They were told that a man in town, named Hugh, could help them, but that he was very, very expensive. Figuring it was worth it, the monks contacted Hugh, and Hugh worked wonders for them. Soon, the interloping friars had been run out of town, and the monks were selling their own produce in peace.
Hugh continued to charge a high retainer fee, however, and soon the monks began to resent it. Feeling that they were being overcharged, they fired Hugh, and hired another man who charged them substantially less.
As soon as Hugh was off the job, however, the friars surged back into town with their cheap flowers and brass knuckles, and soon things were worse than before. The new man was unable to control them, and the monks had to go back to Hugh and promise him even more money before he would return to the job.
The lesson learned: Hugh, and only Hugh, can prevent florist friars.

Don't thank me yet, it's a pricey brand. I have Scweppe's myself, right now, which IIRC was $3/12 on sale ... whereas Reed's runs over a dollar a bottle locally.
It is however EXCELLENT. The extra ginger brew has a real old-fashioned burn. And they use the real ingredients!

Reed's Ginger Ale is awesome stuff -- my daughter's voice teacher got us drinking it a couple of years ago. I also like Vernor's, which is an old Detroit classic.
I like ginger ale so much, once I tried to make a batch of my own. It was delicious, if you enjoy battery acid. Might have put too much ginger in there.

Are your cars packed? You should seriously pack now, if there's a chance you will have to go. Round up the important papers, the kids, the pets, all the things you really don't want to loose. Take pictures of the rest & take the camera with you. It's FAR easier to unpack the car in a couple of days, if you don't need to go, than pack in a race to beat the fire.
GOOD LUCK!

Many years ago, a peaceful tribe in Europe known as the Trids was troubled by a giant. This giant would invade their villages, administering painful kicks to the villagers, many of whom went halt and lame from the vicious attacks.
After years of this, a travelling rabbi happened upon the main village of the Trids, who welcomed him with excitement. However, the giant soon attacked, kicking villagers left and right. The brave rabbi put on his shawl, grabbed his Torah, and ran out into the road in front of the giant, and demanded that the giant kick him, too, thinking that the giant might come to his senses when faced with a holy man.
But the giant just responded, "Silly rabbi. Kicks are for Trids."

The outsized bikes, seating groups of people around a central bar, are something of a fixture in the city's center. But two accidents within two months prompted the city councillor responsible for transport to launch an investigation in June.
They will, however, need permits from the various city boroughs, and those permits are likely to come with restrictions on hours of operation and requirements for a sober driver.

Is Al-Qaida opening a Gaza front to counter Hamas?
Explosions at two sensitive sites in the Gaza Strip over the weekend prompted speculation on Sunday that they were the work of Al-Qaida-aligned radicals opposed to the Palestinian enclave's Islamist rulers Hamas.
No credible claim of responsibility has been made.
Since Hamas seized control of the Gaza Strip in June 2007 by routing secular forces loyal to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, the Islamists have tended to blame occasional bombings and other attacks on Hamas targets on Abbas's Fatah party.
This time, however, suspicion has fallen on fundamentalist Muslims, or Salafis, whose agenda of global jihad, or holy war, against the West is at odds with Hamas's nationalist goals.

Yup, talk about "Vodoo" economics.

Want to get really pissed off? Just 2 months ago they said the deficit would only be about 3 Trillion. Guess what the REAL deficit will be in 2-3 years? Closer to 15 Trillion, if the past performance of our wonderful politicians is any indicator.
It's as if though they have no regard for the consequences. Spending to them has become a means to an end. At this rate we'll see either zero or negative growth over the next 10 years and beyond.

Why in hell would anyone support anything Obama says or does? The man is clearly deranged. Government spending our way to prosperity? When has that worked?

Gee, we never saw that one coming.
Amsterdam sounds like a fun place to visit. I think I'm going to add it to the list of destinations my wife and I are putting together, for when the kids have deserted us after spending all our money. On the other hand, what's the Muslim-situation over there? Last I heard, it was getting pretty derka, but I'm sure they'll have the radicals assimilated in about ten years, when we're ready to tour the world.

They're off their rocker. Perhaps there is something they missed during their socialist classes. Socialism would need to be funded by the free market economy which generates revenue through productivity. Without that... well we get this. It's as if though they think money grows on trees.

Trees = paper
plants = cotton
paper + cotton + special ingredients = US note paper
US note paper + printing press = money
Substituting:
trees plus plants plus special ingredients plus printing press = money

What they saw (needed) was a lefty to go the 7th or 8th innning once or twice a week. They don't envision him closing 4-5 times a week.
What he could also do is if Paplebon came in in the 9th and gave up the tie they could have Wagner close in the extra inning after the sox got the lead back
