I’ve been watching The Good Wife via Amazon Prime for the past few days. An intelligently written (for the most part) show. Noticed it was produced by Ridley Scott, which explains the great visual sense.

Tech note: you may notice things looking a little odd in the LGF Spy, while I tear out the plumbing and install new pipes.

Evening Lizardim from the soon-to-be-bitterly-cold wild north country. We came back from fish country a day early to try to beat the incoming freezing rain/snow storm and following cold snap. I am currently wrangling with trying to do Windows Phone 8 development on a Windows 7 PC; curse Microsoft for attempting to lock you in to their latest and greatest platform in order to develop for a phone… *glaces sidelong at Apple* How go things among the lizardfolk this unseasonably warm night?

Australian sharks take to Twitter to warn surfers and swimmers of their presence

Australian scientists have outfitted almost 400 sharks with transmitters that send automatic warnings, via Twitter, to Surf Life Saving Western Australia’s (SLSWA) Twitter feed.

For example, this morning, when a shark ventured into the waters between Floreat and City Beach in the western Australian city of Perth, subscribers to SLSWA’s Twitter feed received the following the message:

The tweet provides the size and breed of the shark, if known, and its approximate location. It is hoped that the feed, which has over 15,000 subscribers, will help swimmers and surfers make more informed decisions about when to venture into the waters.

Everything will still work just fine. Don’t panic. Just tweaking the presentation code in preparation for adding a cool new feature.

That’s alright, I got a wingnut declaring that the DOJ would totally have taken A&E to court if they’d done the same thing to a Muslim actor, because it was a “violation of his religious freedom” to suspend him for the GQ interview.

Creationisn in Turkey, again. We’ve mentioned the Gulan group in the past, I think, but to get everyone up to date here’s a new story form France:

Turkey’s Gülen: Opposition movement or cult?

The movement founded by Islamic preacher Fethullah Gülen, with its effective communication strategy and connections to police, has emerged as a powerful enemy of Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

With several of his ministers resigning in the wake of a corruption probe, Erdogan seems to have hit a rough patch – and a major factor behind his troubles is a feud with the influential Gülen movement.

[…]

According to Fatma Kizilboga, FRANCE 24’s correspondent in Turkey, the government’s proposal was intended to weaken the Gülen movement by depriving it of future converts to the modern, moderate brand of Islam the network favours.

[…]

Alongside the major tenets of Islam, the Gülen movement – often called “Hizmet” (which means “The Service”) by its followers – also preaches Turkish nationalism, interfaith dialogue and the teaching of creationism.

While it has an estimated 3 million official members and 10 million additional supporters, the group’s inner workings are shrouded in secrecy. “It’s organised like a cult,” a French researcher told FRANCE 24, speaking on condition of anonymity. “In certain places where they meet in Istanbul, it really feels like you’re in a Scientology centre. Leaders make speeches about universal love, and distribute pamphlets with photos of celebrities on them. […]

The movement was founded by Fethullah Gülen, an imam who currently lives in self-imposed exile in Pennsylvania, where he is little-known.

But even without its top leader present on Turkish soil, the movement has thrived, as the 75-year-old Gülen continues to deliver sermons and teachings via the Internet. Moreover, Gülen’s absence has done little to diminish his influence; he was cited in TIME magazine’s list of the “World’s 100 Most Influential People for 2013”.

[…]

Turkey is such a strange place.

I can’t begin to wrap my head around the idea that the guy responsible for “Alien” and “Blade Runner” also infliced “Prometheus” upon us. That was one of the most disappointing things I’ve ever seen.

DES MOINES, Iowa —The Iowa Department of Human Services said Friday that Iowans who have applied through the federal health care portal should reapply using the websites or call center.

Officials said they were notified by federal officials that there would be an additional delay in getting needed information needed to process Iowan’s applications from HealthCare.gov.

“We are working hard to ensure that Iowans who applied through HealthCare.gov will be enrolled in health coverage. We are encouraging Iowans who applied at the federal portal to reapply through our state website and call center,” said DHS Director Charles M. Palmer. “We will make every effort to process applications in a timely manner so that these Iowans can have certainty about their health care coverage.”

DHS said it is sending emails and letters to the nearly 16,000 Iowans whose applications are held at the federal hub.

Iowans should reapply through the state website at dhsservices.iowa.gov or by calling [no phone numbers allowed].

We had the same thing here in Oregon. I think Oregon has the distinction of having the only completely nonfunctional exchange.
