Neo-Nazis want to rally in Portland, Ore. The permits were previously issued, but the mayor is now concerned about the recent double murder there and wants the Federal government to revoke the permits. (I’m not sure how the Feds fit into this.)

Mash up of creationism, Islam, society, etc. New video put up by ICE at Dartmouth:
Abstract:
During the election campaign, Donald Trump often made statements about Muslims in the U.S. This type of rhetoric has been used quite frequently by some of the far-right groups in Europe. Therefore, there is an urgent need to understand the dynamic of cultural interactions that define Muslim minorities in Europe, and the way these interactions are used in domestic and international politics. Gender-related issues and radicalization of Muslims are two topics that frequent the headlines. But now science is also becoming one of the contested issues. For example, a rejection of biological evolution is increasingly being used by the media and the far-right groups in Europe to paint Muslim minorities as outsiders that threaten the European education system. Furthermore, Muslims are often treated in a unitary manner with an assumption that evolution rejection is their default religious position. Conversely, many Muslims in Europe are embracing this rejection of evolution as an identity marker for being a Muslim. While religious objections to evolution are indeed at play in some cases, our understanding for the rise of Islamic creationism should also take into account socio-economic disparities and their impact on education for Muslim minorities in Europe. A nuanced understanding of this dynamic may benefit those who support both the propagation of good science and favor cultural pluralism, and may also provide an insight into more politically charged subjects, such as debates over free speech and women’s religious attire in Europe. Furthermore, a look at these issues in Europe also may cast evolution battles in the U.S. in a different light.

The ACLU has their heart in the right place, but I believe that Portland is in the right here, due to their belief that the rally would be a direct threat to public safety, given that the Neo-Nazis (which is what the so-called Alt-Right almost entirely consists of) have beein increasingly violent during the latest gatherings (Berkeley, Portland, Olympia) and there have been multiple fatal attacks committed by white nationalists during the past three weeks. Given that three groups with a history of violent attacks (Identity Evropa, the “Proud Boys”, and Traditionalist Workers Party) all have announced their intent on being an armed presence at the rally, I think it is safe to say that this isn’t a First Amendment issue.

The ACLU takes an absolutist view of the I Amendment just as the NRA takes an absolutist view of the II Amendment.
Nazis explicitly preach genocide. Genocide is a crime. Although agitprop and stochastic terrorism (such as seen in the run-up to the Nazi genocide or the Rwanda genocide) are not specified in law, incitement to violence is. By advocating for genocide, Neo-Nazis are specifically advocating for violence - even if they don’t do it themselves.
(See killings of David Berg, criminal activities of the Ku Klux Klan, the National Alliance, &c)
The ACLU has defended the Klan in the past though they specifically call for marginalisation or killing of African-Americans, Slavs, Catholics, &c., and have done so themselves in the past.
Is the I Amendment so absolute that it must be defined as “all speech” is protected, even when the speech seeks to incite criminal violence? Is the I Amendment just as absolute as gun-nuts think the II Amendment is?
Is Glenn Beck haranguing night after night on Dr. Tiller in Kansas not responsible for the actions that occurred to Dr. Tiller, because it seems to me that such screeds are intended to set off someone who they then can write off as “unstable” or whatnot.

re: #280 Barefoot Grin
People investigating Ivanka brand in China either arrested or disappeared:
The article is worth read in its entirety, especially for the political and economic background it provides.
In a nutshell, the Party is very worried about the state of the Chinese economy, which has been slowing down for the last two to three years. Maintaining political stability (i.e., Party control) requires a well fed and complacent populace. Should the economy start to falter, the people will start to ask questions and make demands that the Party cannot answer or provide. It is an open secret here that factory workers are routinely over-worked and underpaid. Their employers take advantage of migrants from other provinces who have no family connections or guanxi in the city where they work. And workers (who desperately need the jobs to support their families back home) are unlikely to complain. When enough of them get fed up and go on strike, maybe the government will step in, either to quell the protest or to make some charade of correcting problems.
At the same time, the Party is very sensitive about negative publicity, and the fact that the Trump name is associated with this particular investigation means even more international attention will be paid to it. So, the easiest solution for the Party is to make the investigation disappear — to maintain a “harmonious society” and avoid public embarrassment.
In short, those two men are in deep shit and I expect they will soon be forced to make public confessions on Chinese TV of inciting public disorder or some such BS before they will be released. And they will probably be under close surveillance for the rest of their lives.
I also expect the Trumps to ignore the entire affair, because money.

Yr Dok Zoom is an old school ACLU card-carrier, so we find that pretty persuasive, along with the sweet old-fashioned notion that the best way to combat offensive speech is with more speech. And when it comes to Nazis, with social shunning, boycotts, and a recognition that someone having the right to free speech in no way obligates the rest of us to hand them a microphone. But if protest is allowed in a park, then it’s allowed even for people with abhorrent views, because First Amendment. Should it be allowed at any time, especially a week after an evil loser has murdered people? That one, we’re persuadable on: It’s close enough to yelling “theater!” in a crowded fire that we can see the case for shutting it down, temporarily, as long as there’s a guarantee the marches will be allowed later. We won’t pretend to know for certain, but the accused murderer in Portland being photographed Heiling Hitler while wrapped in a flag at the last event organized by the “Trump Free Speech People” certainly doesn’t make them seem like benign free speech advocates:

Wait for some wingnutter to post on an obscure right-wing blog that Christian is a registered Democrat. Give it no more than twenty-four hours and it will be on FOX.
They already did. Just go to any usual right wing sites or bloggers and you’ll find stories of Jeremy Christian’s support of Bernie Sanders during last years Democratic Primaries. (But they conveniently left out that he switched his support to Trump after Hillary Clinton won the primaries).

Covfefe is the natural outgrowth of modern texting and emailing as soon as you finish typing without carefully checking each word. Most of us are fortunate that our humiliation is limited to only a couple people. Obviously Trump doesn’t review words that millions may see. And he apparently doesn’t care either.
My phone’s autocorrect insists - INSISTS - that I meant to type hickey instead of hockey. Repeatedly. Even if I go back and correct it.
It has led to some interesting tweets.

In fact, the News is staunchly anti-Trump, it did denounce the threats against Obama, and it makes a regular practice of mocking chief offenders like the draft-dodging child molester Ted Nugent.
One purpose of this editorial is to expose the duplicity and hypocrisy of Republican media who will seemingly gloss over any atrocity from their own members.

re: #142 klys (maker of Silmarils)
So far, I’ve just done hard-boiled eggs, because I have a carton of duck eggs reaching the end of their “use by” date, and because by doing them under different conditions I get a sense of how consistent the device is under different circumstances. For example, changing out the container, how much water volume, open chamber or covered, whether multiple items affect the outcome. So far it’s very consistent; I’m getting firm whites and yolks that are solid but haven’t become pale and grainy (part of that is that they’re local duck eggs, though).
The Anova doesn’t really come with a cookbook, which is the other thing slowing me down. There’s some basic suggestions included in the setup guide, but that’s it. I need to wade through sous vide materials on the internet, but have been otherwise preoccupied. The other reasons I jumped into eggs first: Kenji Lopez-Alt has a great guide to sous-vide egg cooking on SeriousEats, and I don’t have seal-able plastic bags lying around and eggs don’t need them.
Once I get some acceptable bags (apparently you don’t need the pricey specialty food-sealer, just bags that you can burp air out of that seal well) I might try seafood first. I never cook fish.
Wakes up.

Fair enough on a larger point. I’ve encountered plenty of Bro sexism and racial uh neglect shall we say. For me it’s about the extreme alt left existing and being oddly aligned in ways with the alt right, trying to sabotage their alleged party and not holding the same values as Dems. And then there’s Bernie, sigh, with his power trips and refusal to join the party he wants power over.
Still not sure where the CT comes in.

My observation is two things:
One, there’s the people who see what they want in the causes/people they support, which has nothing to do with what that cause/person are actually about. Case in point: our current president.
Two—overlapping with one—are the total narcissists for whom “right” and “left” are meaningless compared to their sense that they are important, special, “wise,” et cetera.
The far right, far left convergence has to do with common styles of thinking, but in particular with the deep ego-involvement and self-gratification that comes from being outre and countercultural, as well the ego padding that conspiracy logic provides (because you’re not shit because of anything you did, but because of “them.”)

Well, if he actually suffered a stroke, I would presume he can no longer authorise launching nukes.
That said, there are many other half-finished or garbled tweets by Trump he never corrected or deleted. This one just happens to be a funny diversion.
Like the red light at the White House, “stroke” might be reading a bit too much into what’s going on.
Whoever runs the Merriam Webster twitter deserves a huge freaking raise.
Considering all the stress that has come down on his head in the last three weeks, I can’t imagine that Trump’s in the best of health right now. His blood pressure is probably resting in the “stroke zone” every waking hour.

Not sound morbid but we haven’t had a President die in office due to illness in over 70 years. Old president, out of shape President, stressed president. Just seems like a perfect storm. I’m not WISHING it but he definitely doesn’t have the STAMINA be bragged he had and he certainly isn’t in the best shape of his life like Dr. Okun from ID4 said he was.
Checking on the Kabul explosion, tweets are reporting it was in the vicinity of the German and Indian embassies.
re: #246 Targetpractice
Ahh okay. Yeah, he’s really unhealthy but the only thing I thought about was how his dumbass can’t help himself, is barely literate and does this all the time. For some tweeters it’s like a thing watching how long he can take between tweets, misspelled or not.

That’s from a month and a half ago. Not saying it’s not bullshit, it totally is but it’s not new. And yeah it’s pathetic to blame Obama for this. Obama actually stood up to Putin. Trump’s done nothing but kiss Putin’s ass while attacking our long standing allies.

I’m sorry you’re having that problem; I can relate… .
When we went on our trip to California in December for three weeks, and shortly after we left the temps here dropped to -25 F and burst our water pipes in our cyclone cellar (the inner door somehow got open).
For three weeks water sprayed out of the hot water line all over the cellar, flooding our dirt floor cellar with about three feet of water. We got home on Christmas Eve to that - no way to get a plumber to come out sixty miles to our house then. (Fortunately for us, our homeowner’s insurance paid for the damages to our house, though I had to shovel a lot of the floor back into the cellar on my own.)
And in the end, the love you cofveve is equal to the love you mofveve.

That stinks. If I ever had to replace my water heater I would need to remove a section of the kitchen flooring (that’s what the last owners did when they had the house plumbed with indoor water).
At that point, I might just say to heck with it and get an on-demand water heater that I can have installed somewhere and just leave the old water heater in the cellar.

Trump Administration Moves To Roll Back Birth Control Coverage
The contraception mandate, enacted under President Barack Obama in 2012, for the first time in U.S. history deemed birth control an essential preventive health service that should be fully covered alongside well-woman visits, mammograms and sexually transmitted infection screenings. It guarantees coverage to more than 55 million women, saved women $1.4 billion on birth control pills in the first year it went into effect, and has contributed to the lowest U.S. abortion rate since the procedure became legal in 1973.

When Sanders lost the primary - he swapped to Trump. NOT fake news.
I would need to see a credible reference to him endorsing Trump.
He certainly didn’t help the Democrats much, but not helping (or even attacking) the Democrats is not the same as “swapping to Trump.”
For example, Gary “Aleppo” Johnson also attacked the Democrats, but that did not make him a Trump endorser. (Dr. Jill Stein I’m not so sure about: She was at the RT dinner with Michael Flynn and Vladimir Putin, Bernie Sanders was not.)

McCain tells America’s allies: Trump unsettles Americans too
McCain is still a politician at heart, but I sense that he is just biding his time to settle a personal score with an arrogant draft-dodger who impugned his service record (the only thing about him I still admire) with a flippant remark.

I miss the days when presidents walked the Earth*. Now it seems they need golf carts.
*Yes, I know FDR had polio and used a wheelchair, but sometimes he’d wear leg braces so he could stand while orating. I bet FDR could still beat Trump in a race on land or in the water.

I’m not holding my breath waiting on McCain to do anything substantive. If he decides this will be last term in office, then just maybe he’ll go into attack mode. Attacking Trump publicly would probably kill any chance of re-election, at least right now.
Video job done. Now I get to grade papers. Back to lurker mode, while I have a nice cup of covfefe to keep me alertete.

Don’t know yet. Only got here at 5:30pm local time yesterday. Just enough time for a quick dinner with the client and some colleagues before passing out.
I will say one thing, though. Thankfully I didn’t rent a car. These people are crazy on the road! I learned quickly (1 cab ride) to not pay attention to the driving as it can be dangerous to my health!

For sure. China makes it very hard and costly to get a drivers license, but once you have it, the rules of the road are merely advisories. The traffic cops in the big cities are more strict, but that’s only a relative term.
Similarly, it’s very difficult to get into university, but relatively easy to graduate. It is almost unheard of for a school to flunk out a student, and I learned quickly that my attempts to hold students accountable for their work performance would have no real effect, other than requiring they take a new final exam.
In fact, as a general observation about China, laws, rules and regulations on paper are only there for show. No one really expects you to enforce them or follow them, until it is convenient to do so.
This particular behavior by Congress and the GOP scares me, because they seem quite willing now to ignore the rule of law — the very thing that people around the world admire about the USA — for political expedience.

Cranberry juice combines with anything (except Jagermeister, but then nothing combines with that).
It’s also a heap bit expensive in a bar around here if you don’t get alcohol with it (about $3 a glass).

That is exactly what the GOP wants though, at least from their behaviour: The ability to ignore the law except when it is convenient to obey it.
The small “l” libertarians in the GOP have done a much better job of forwarding Ayn Rand’s vision of a society where everyone is a failure unless born into a fortune of millions of bootstraps than the Libertarian Party ever has.
David Pakman goes into my congressman Adrian Smith’s (R-NE3) question of whether Americans are entitled to eat in his interview last Saturday on NPR. Rep. Smith tried to divert from the subject by saying “nutrition is important” while NPR’s interviewer kept coming back to the question “Is every American entitled to eat” and wouldn’t let him off the hook.

He cannot bring himself to say it, but basically I am sure that if you pressed him, he would compare feeding the poor to feeding vermin like the Lt. Governor of SC once did…
Or he could just quote Lenin: “Those who do not work, do not eat!”

Mr. Smith is not my congressman, he only occupies the seat for my district. He is on record saying he only represents Republicans.
Lenin’s argument is strikingly similar to Calvinist Christianity (a version to which Mr. Smith adheres).
Like everything else, it is projection with Movement Conservative. Democrats are not anti-life, Republicans are.

Meg Whitman ran for the Republican nomination for governor of CA, and lost that race. Later, she endorsed Hillary Clinton across party lines. I suspect there is no love lost between Meg and The Donald.

More on Meg Whitman:
She spent $144 million of her own money to buy the California governor’s office in 2010. Even Daily Caller went so far as to call her out, accusing her of vastly overpaying for advertising on conservative blogging platforms’ advertising in an effort to influence their content.
The Scramento Bee reported in 2010 after reviewing her voting registration, Meg Whitman had not voted in over twenty years; Meg Whitman gave a non-pology describing her voting record as “inexcusable.”
From 2000-2009, Meg Whitman employed an undocumented migrant as a housekeeper, while in her campaign she harangued on undocumented immigrants. She claimed that though the Social Security Administration repeatedly wrote her from 2003 onward about a fake Social Security number, she never received any of the letters from SSA and claimed it was a political attack and the fault of the Post Office that she received no notifications for six years.
When the information was printed in the Bee, her own campaign manager stated it was for the “good of the campaign” when she fired her housekeeper (IOKIYAR)
During her campaign, she still was a member of Goldman-Sachs board. She benefited from “spinning” (that is, getting early deals on IPOs that GS tipped their board on before an IPO was offered to the public) to the tune of nearly two million dollars.
Whitman ran on reducing taxes (dog-whistle for rich tax breaks), school reform (dog-whistle for defunding public schools in favour of vouchers and private schools), and suspending AB-32 (California’s 2006 law designed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 30%).
Nope, she gets no points for allegedly voting for Clinton over Trump. She is nothing more than a female rodent copulator.

Sure. I don’t like her because she helped rip off my wife’s retirement fund and is a small “l” libertarian Republican hypocrite.

Yes, I do, because you obviously have an axe to grind and I have apparently set you off by mentioning her support of Clinton. I get the feeling you’re attacking me personally by suggesting I support everything Meg has done throughout her career, including stiffing your wife out of her retirement funds.
Well, I’m sorry that happened, but my remarks had only to do with Clinton.

Meg Whitman ran for the Republican nomination for governor of CA, and lost that race. Later, she endorsed Hillary Clinton across party lines. I suspect there is no love lost between Meg and The Donald.

I attacked Meg Whitman’s record. You claimed that she was “party over country” for allegedly supporting Clinton over Trump. The enemy of my enemy is not my friend.

Fox just had a “panel of concerned mothers” on. I couldn’t stomach it for long, but the first two I watched were both attorneys. They were all upper middle class. The Kathy Griffin thing was a big concern because “scarring the kiddies.” The other topics were how the Russia thing is a distraction from the real stuff and the left attacking Trump because of resentment over the election. Got through that entire post without a single fefe (iron-iron).

Just got back from 2 weeks in China. I was talking to a young man in the taxi stand at the Beijing airport. I told him that driving like the Chinese do would never work in the US. Basically, if you can get the nose of your car slightly in front of the neighboring car, the other driver will usually slow down just enough to let them in. In the US, that driver would think “No fucking way!” and speed up, maybe even hitting you. The young man joked that this way of driving doesn’t work in China, either.

And I cook a lot more these days.
It’s the best device evah. $150 circulating water bath. If you bought that from Fisher Scientific, it’d cost you $2500. And, it’s almost like cheating with meat. Dial in the temp for the doneness you want your lamb. cow, pig, etc. Immerse. Let sit for 2 hrs. Take out and finish in a hot cast iron skillet or on the grill, amaze.

— darth:™ (@darth) May 31, 2017
And, with sous vide cooking, you can cook at much lower temperature than USDA recommended “properly cooked.” USDA times are based on short cooking times and on conventional cooking techniques. Because of the extended cooking time, you are pasteurizing whatever it is that you are cooking. So, a rack of lamb cooked at 133 deg F for 5 hours (mass of meat needs to reach an equilibrium) then finished on the outside with some technique to sear (you want to develop that maillard reaction for flavor and firmness) you get the best meat, always perfectly done without any food safety concerns (if that’s a concern of yours)
Put your hamburger patties in the sous vide at 125 deg F (med rare) for 2 hours, no worries about E. coli/Salmonella/Listeria

What’s frustrating is liberals instead of having a chance (though I will say Obama wsa able to do it in health care and LGBT rights), but instead of being able to move forward, it seems that yet another Dem president will be stuck cleaning up a mess. The consequence of Trumps action is that the US will no longer be negotiating from a position of leadership. Instead, we will just be one more voice at the table. Where this will really hurt is, as the US refuses to take necessary actions on its part, countries such as those in Europe (and China), will have fewer reasons to hold back on things like blocking imports from the US for noncompliance.
While this will bode well for some things (countries should be less afraid to stand up to us for things like invading other countries), overall the world is going to be more fractured for a while, which will lead to more regional conflicts.

re: #445 Targetpractice
Oldies but goodies. It’s what Trump always does. He always retreats to what he knows/does best. Attack and deflect attention from the bad stuff he does. Project his own actions on to others. And so far, he’s read the media better than the media has at recognizing they’re being played by Trump.
So I see that Trump’s pulled out of the Paris Climate Accords. Can’t say I’m surprised - this was telegraphed a few days ago.
China is waiting in the wings……they will now reap the green energy tech/foreign policy karma from this debacle. Europe stands to gain as well. But China, I think, will gain the most.

The GOP has two problems that are compounding each other: An unpopular president and little margin for error in votes. Senator Yertle can only get Trumpcare passed through reconciliation, and that means finding 51 votes prepared to commit political seppuku to strip 23 million Americans of healthcare.

I figured that was the current state. I think the little bit of video that showed up here yesterday with Kansas Republican Senator Pat Roberts telling a group of protesters “Medicare is the answer” and “single payer is on the table” was an indication it was a mess in the Senate.
Maybe Trump might try tweeting some Republicans in the Senate and see if they can tell him what’s going on. He doesn’t seem to know. I guess he’s too busy being Trump to care.
By the way…in case anyone missed the Robert’s comments here is a link to a DailyKos article.
Ks Senator Pat Roberts tells protestors Medicare is the answer and Single payer is on the table”
I wonder if Roberts was allowed to say that by Mitch or if he is flying solo? Maybe Roberts gets excoriated by the Senate for his comments.
This really means that early and multi-day voting is something voters like, even if they won’t admit it, but:
In the first day of early voting for Georgia’s 6th District congressional runoff, 712 Cobb voters showed up to cast their ballot early, according to Cobb elections.
Turnout Tuesday was more than four times greater than the first day of early voting for the original race on April 18, which only saw 160 Cobb voters vote in person.
re: #464 ObserverArt
Zombie Trumpcare is still an option; the GOP can’t be trusted that this is a dead issue until we see the corpse riddled with silver bullets, stakes through the heart, and scattered to the four winds. And even then, the GOP is craven enough to try and sneak one past everyone, including their own witless wonder representatives who’ll vote on a bill that isn’t scored and goes after preexisting conditions all because they get their sweet tax cuts for millionaires like Trump so they can claim that they ended Obamacare (and made life harder for millions of Americans in the process).

I think DJT should just declare that Obamacare is repealed. What would it matter that no such vote in congress has taken place? His followers would swoon, FNC would quickly line up guests to affirm that Obamacare was in fact repealed, Hannity could attack the ‘conspiracy theorists’ who claim that no repeal vote was held in Congress, etc.

Those numbers don’t make sense: of “662” positions being “tracked”, Griffin’s list only accounts for 559 of them. What happened to the other 103? Are those the ones simply assigned to Jared Kushner?

Jared is both the WH food taster and Ambassador to the Seychelles.
re: #69 Shiplord Kirel
SMOTI interviewed as a NATO expert on PRI is one of those truly bizarre through-the-looking-glass things you can’t believe could quite happen. Such things seem to happen more and more often these days though. It would be laughable on a yokel RWNJ talk show in Lubbock. For a national outlet with a heretofore decent reputation, it is just off the scale. These people are just following the ratings, no matter what kind of weird rabbit hole they lead into.
I heard that report and immediately went into a deep rant…WTAF?!?!?!. I think my wife thinks I’ve lost it.
re: #468 Sir John Barron
I think DJT should just declare that Obamacare is repealed. What would it matter that no such vote in congress has taken place? His followers would swoon, FNC would quickly line up guests to affirm that Obamacare was in fact repealed, Hannity could attack the ‘conspiracy theorists’ who claim that no repeal vote was held in Congress, etc.
He took Obamacare out on 5th Avenue and shot it.
Now it is the ACA like it should have been all along and his supporters won’t care.

Today, I had a class with two students who I’d generally have described as mildly Euroskeptic. Their attitude has changed 180 in one week. Now they’re both saying that greater EU unity and integration is imperative.
Quite a change in attitude in one week.

Indeed. He was supposed to be ‘the adult in the room’.
But, it does make sense in the context of Trump’s affection for strongmen as leaders of nations, as well as his choice of billionaires, generals, and sycophants as advisers. He doesn’t believe in diplomacy, or multilateral organizations. His approach to the EU, for example, is to bitch about our trade deficit with Germany. But Germany is not a trading unit, the EU as a whole is. It’s like China complaining about a trade deficit with Nebraska.
More than that, though, his goal of ‘bilateral trade negotiations’ with every individual nation is essentially the approach of the union-busting CEO: divide and conquer.

President Trump just returned from nine days in the Middle East and Europe that demonstrated his America First approach to ensuring security and prosperity for our nation. 1. Not a global community: No matter what he tries, Europe is going to stick together. NATO may just become the name of the European force.
2. America is smaller, economically, than Europe.
3. Just because you want the world to be at each other’s throats, it doesn’t make it that way. On the flip side, just because there are actors that want to divide the world, doesn’t mean everyone wants it.

re: #532 Decatur Deb
She has a scheduled book tour with one of the most promising of Democratic senators. (It’s still on at the moment.) We pissed away 2016 and we’re starting on a reprise for 2020.
If little crap like this will cause another bad year in 2020 for the Democrats then there is a lot more in action pissing our country away. We can’t put everyone in hermetically sealed bags for two-and-a-half years. Plus, there is going to be 1,358 more episodes of Republican/Conservative outrage spells between now and then.
Our country has bigger problems than Kathy Griffin. Ignorant voters is our problem and shutting up the likes of a Kathy Griffin won’t fix that. Her dust-up is a result. The 2016 election is a result.
Side question…do you really think the Democrats pissed away an election, or the voters of this country did?

It was a sick photo, not an attack, like what Trump’s supporter in Portland did.
I’m not worried about KG’s vile photo/video having an effect on elections. The disastrous budget, tax “reform,” and healthcare “reforms” should reduce it to an unpleasant memory at best.

I don’t have an account, but I imagine if you have the account user i.d. and passwords you can use the account.
I found the bloody Trump head photo to be offensive and stopped looking at it almost immediately. I’m glad KG apologized for it and took responsibility for a stupid and tasteless stunt, but I really don’t know that much about her and could give a crap what happens to her in the coming days/weeks.
As for venting rage about it either here or on Twitter, I’ll leave that to others. There’s nothing I can tweet that will add to the conversation in a constructive manner.
I’m actually more upset with the news that Trump may be pulling out of the Paris Agreement. If he does that, that will be unfortunate. At the same time, it allows the other countries to even further strengthen the accord so that, should the US decide it doesn’t want to be like Syria or Nicaragua under the next administration, we’ll have to step up our game even more to comply.

I actually wanted to highlight something here beyond the revolting fact that in the age of Trump, white supremacists have a seat at the table and are being increasingly given a platform to spread their nonsense.
I wanted to get into the nonsense.
The racism in this racism goes even deeper than is obvious at the surface. Consider that most black people in America have at least some white/European ancestry, because of the nature of slavery in America. But we still consider them black.
Obama’s mother was white, and his Dad black. He’s considered either black, or half-black if you want to say ‘he’s not black enough’, but NOBODY calls him ‘white’. It’s the old ‘one drop of blood’ rule, but it only applies to whiteness. That which isn’t pure white is black, or brown. But that which is not pure black or brown is STILL black or brown.
When the term ‘black genocide’ was prevalent, it referred to young black people dying from the crack epidemic, plus the effects on the community of so many lost to addiction. White genocide just means lack of pure pasty-faced people. Big fucking deal - who cares?
I can’t begin to describe how stupid this is from a biological standpoint. Purebred ANYTHING is generally weaker and less hardy than more genetically diverse stock. I mean what are we preserving in white people? Ability to sunburn in minutes? Ability to drink cows milk without discomfort?

I don’t know if Trump will pull out of the Paris climate deal. Unfortunately he needs a hit with his base right now, so he might do it just for that.
But I also think he might be leaking news that he plans to pull out just to get people to beg him not to, and maybe to see if he is offered something to stay in. Because that is his favorite strategy, even as a developer: take away something people already think they have and force them to bargain for it back.

re: #656 darthstar
This is how that hearing is going to go.
The GOP will spend half the time pontificating that Comey screwed up on not pursuing the Clinton emails enough. Then, with a few minutes left, the Democrats will refocus attention on fact that Trump obstructed justice and sought to interfere in federal criminal investigations so as to avoid further personal scrutiny.
Those are impeachable charges, but the GOP will continue deflecting and enabling Trump because the GOP simply is incapable of doing anything patriotic for the Union.
To them, patriotism has been rewritten so as to honor/respect/glorify/extol the Confederacy (spit be upon the insurrectionists) and to cheer on the Russians who benefit from every single Trump action on international affairs (and many domestic shenanigans).

First, you acknowledge the dynamic exists, and then, you strategize accordingly. If Kathy Griffin had done this, she would’ve realized there was nothing whatsoever to gain from the stunt and come up with something better (“better” being a routine/photoshoot/whatever that ridicules trump SNL-style as opposed to making him sympathetic and putting yourself in Secret Service crosshairs to boot)
The other thing we can do is aggressively and forcefully push back against the willfully stupid both-sider idiots - “Forget Kathy Griffin, who already apologized. Why didn’t you ever call out Republicans for currying favor with Ted Fucking Nugent to the point of inviting him to the White House? Why do you equate swearing (no matter the context) with physical assault? Are you genuinely this stupid, or just putting on an act for your corporate masters?”
Your goal isn’t to change the behavior of the both-siderists but to go over their heads and directly to the reality-TV-driven US culture (“See? I’m not a pushover. I know how to fight for my cause and for you.”)
