Boy Scouts Chief Offers Weak Non-Apology Apology for Trump’s Vulgar Speech at Jamboree

Politics • Views: 38,117

The Chief Scout Executive of the Boy Scouts of America, Michael Surbaugh, has posted one of those “we apologize if you were offended” non-apology apologies at the Boy Scouts site: From the Chief: Our Perspective on the Presidential Visit - Scouting Wire.

… For our Scouting family at home not able to see these real moments of Scouting, we know the past few days have been overshadowed by the remarks offered by the President of the United States.

I want to extend my sincere apologies to those in our Scouting family who were offended by the political rhetoric that was inserted into the jamboree. That was never our intent. The invitation for the sitting U.S. President to visit the National Jamboree is a long-standing tradition that has been extended to the leader of our nation that has had a Jamboree during his term since 1937. It is in no way an endorsement of any person, party or policies. For years, people have called upon us to take a position on political issues, and we have steadfastly remained non-partisan and refused to comment on political matters. We sincerely regret that politics were inserted into the Scouting program.

What’s missing in this statement is any actual renunciation of Trump’s grotesque, vulgar speech.

But of course, anyone who’s seen any speech by this malevolent narcissist was not the least bit surprised that he did this. And that’s why this apology rings very hollow indeed. For all their disavowals and claims that the Scouts are “non-partisan,” they had to know what would happen.

Not to mention the adult Boy Scout leaders who led the cheers and booing for Trump’s enemies, and stood behind him on stage, grinning and laughing at his grotesque, vulgar speech. If the Scout leadership were serious about this “apology,” the adults who enabled this shameful event should be disciplined and possibly removed from their duties.

I doubt that’s going to happen.

I loved the Boy Scouts. Did a lot of hiking and camping. Today not so much love, but the real villain here is Trump. He makes everything political. Remember his talk at the CIA? That was worse. Perhaps because of this orgs that don’t have to invite him won’t. It’s not worth the blowback.

BSA is taking a well-deserved beating in the comments, both for the non-apology and for not setting firm ground rules as to what was appropriate and what was not.

I saw one guy tossing around lame insults like ‘Broflake,’ but the smart people in the comments put him in his place pretty quick.

So what’s on my schedule this week? Do I have any bigly speeches lined up? How come these groups don’t invite me to give speeches anymore? My speeches are the best, everybody says so. I draw the biggest crowds! Record crowds!

Trump only gives speeches at venues where he won’t face any opposition. This indicates to me that he or someone else at the WH talked to Surbaugh before Trump appeared at the jamboree. It’s very likely that Trump was assured beforehand that he could say anything he wanted to say in his speech, and that he would not be booed for any reason.

Ground rules? Where Trump is concerned, he doesn’t believe in rules, morals, ethics, or basic etiquette. He just does whatever he’s going to do.

The BSA deserves the scorn and derision for this mess, and the limp wristed response to Trump’s actual speech.

That a bunch of kids would cheer to Trump regaling the audience with how a “rich developer friend” of his got bought out and got a yacht and had parties… if you know what I mean, shows that his cognitive function is that of a teen who doesn’t necessarily understand the consequences of his actions.

You know, we just passed the graduation season, and other than one (?) of the military academies and “Liberty” “University”, I don’t remember Trump giving too many commencement speeches. That seems highly unusual, but also not entirely surprising.

The repeal effort reminds me of the horror movie It Follows, in which the monster keeps slowly, relentlessly moving forward, ready to eat it’s victims alive if it ever catches it’s prey. No CBO score, no poll, no lack of support can stop the GOP from continuing to push this abomination towards passage, I guess in the hopes they can wear down the opposition one way or another.

I’m still thinking, though not expressed, Trump’s story about his rich friend is another tale of the Real Life of Donald J. Trump.

It’s like the Snake Poem. He is the snake.

At the BS of A Jamboree the snake was telling a story about itself.

I don’t think I would encourage booing there either, just because of the average age of the participants (a voting age or older group, boo away). But rapt silence would be encouraged unless he said something positive about the kids specifically or the organization, then some self congratulatory cheering would have been fine. The Hitler Youth feel was just creepy.

Really, at this point, what they are doing is trying to wear everyone down with so much bullshit it’s hard to know where to start. Trump stirs up outrage and meanwhile, back at the ranch, his minions are tearing the government apart limb from limb, federal to local, and breaking anything they can. I’m personally wondering how much money they’re looting from us via a ton of slight of hand back channels. While they point and scream about emails and Benghazi, DNC criminals (I had to chastise a friend on facebook for linking to SMOTIs blog regarding Debbie Wasserman Schultz’s brother being part of some sort of criminal activity. Both sides do it, clean up our mess first or we’re hypocrites, vote for Bernie, blah, just kill me, I have a pain behind my eye now) , and whatever stupid shit they can tapdance into to lure our attention away from the fact they’re dismanteling whatever they can.

I know Justice grinds along verrrrry slowly, but at what cost right now? I think it might be worse than we can imagine, but I hope I am wrong.

I’m beginning to think that Congressional Committees should just ask Josh Marshall to come and explain it all them, preferably on national TV. If they won’t do it, maybe Chris Hayes would have Josh on for a telethon — I mean, 23 minutes won’t do it. There are others — Krugman has a pretty good grasp, for example — but Josh is The Man right now.

There’s nothing strong about someone who hires someone else to do his dirty work. Neither Trump not the Mooch have the wherewithal to realize that the constant in-fighting, public threats of firings and criminal investigations of WH staff, and resignations are not signs of a stable WH environment. Furthermore, neither seems to realize that the WH is not a venue in which constant episodes of The Apprentice should be occurring on a daily basis. Putin is really enjoying this show.

re: #60 majii

Putin is really enjoying this show.

I’m sure he is, but it’s not really helping him. He hasn’t gotten what he wanted: the end to sanctions for him and his buds. The US government is pretty much paralyzed and its allies have to work around the current idiot in the White House. However, the US was never Russia’s problem. Russia’s problem is Russia, and the US/the West is the excuse.

I’m fairly sure that Putin believes his own bullshit by now, which is a fatal condition for a leader but can hurt a lot of innocent people before taking its prey. He really thinks the West is his problem, but the Russian economy will continue to decline and fail because of mismanagement and endemic corruption no matter who is in the White House. What Trump buys him is opportunity to get into more idiotic money wasting foreign adventures, which will hurt the locals but hurt Russia as well.

VV Putin is not a SUPERGENIUS. He is an opportunist with poor risk management skills, who saw an opportunity and lept before thinking. The Trump administration hasn’t delivered, and won’t deliver, and one way or another will end. It is and will continue to be a disaster, and Americans will want someone to blame. VV Putin, SUPERGENIUS, will be right there ready to take up the mantle.

Twitter, Facebook, and Google are not legally utilities, because they are not monopolies like your city water company or electric company. I don’t have to use Google services — there are alternatives. Many people live without Facebook or Twitter. They are not necessities. Water, electricity and natural gas, however, are.

China has already “clearly” expressed its point of view about the Dalai Lama’s visit, Foreign Ministry spokesman Lu Kang told a daily news briefing.

“Issues relating to Tibet concern China’s sovereignty and territory integrity. We demand the relevant country earnestly respect China’s core interests and make the correct political decision on this matter,” Lu said, using stronger language than before on the issue.

“China will not interfere in other countries’ internal affairs, but will certainly not tolerate another country doing anything that harms China’s core interests,” he added, without elaborating.

They never explained anything to me except it was compromised on PayPal. New card, that was LINKED to Apple Pay. No other card was. I figured I would try Apple Pay as a easier way to pay. My other cards would notify me of big transactions, this was a new card, and they did not. Surprise. I used that card only for a very few transactions. I have a paypal account. I have multiple cards. I’ve been compromised before. The only thing that card company was going to tell me was where it was compromised. Paypal was where it was. So if I have only that card on AP, and only used it a few times, in my hand, I suspect that. And that is what I said. I could be wrong, but the one thing that was different was I activated it with Apple Pay.

Finally figured it out. White tips,

Someone used my PayPal card number to pay for *Nigerian* pay TV services and shop for sundries in London. My card was in my possession, and I had not even used it during that trip. I got it all resolved, but PayPal does not make it easy to resolve fraud. Nor do they seem especially worried about the security of their systems.

Ancient DNA counters biblical account of the mysterious Canaanites

One of those sources is the Bible’s Old Testament, which documents a grisly end for the Canaanites: After the Israelites’ exodus from Egypt, they swept into Canaan and annihilated its people. But did that really happen? Archaeological data suggests that Canaanite cities were never destroyed or abandoned. Now, ancient DNA recovered from five Canaanite skeletons suggests that these people survived to contribute their genes to millions of people living today.

Sounds like the issue is with paypal. PayPal and apple pay are separate, and do not work together. apple pay is more secure than using the actual cc. this is because of the nfc technology and the token system that apple pay uses.
I’ve heard many horror stories about people using PayPal, just be glad you used your CC and not your bank account.

During one of my previous run-ins with PayPal, I had enabled my PP account to pull funds directly from my bank account without my approval. Big mistake. My card was compromised, and my bank account was drained. Fortunately, there was not much in the account, but it still took a while to get the funds back.

I learned my lesson, though.

He’s like a not-very-bright mini-mobster.

This was my favorite sequence:

Scaramucci also told me that, unlike other senior officials, he had no interest in media attention. “I’m not Steve Bannon, I’m not trying to suck my own cock,”

First of all, for someone who’s not interested in media attention, he certainly has been running his mouth non-stop in the media. And second of all—nice talk from the communications director (and hideous mental image now burned into my brain.)

It was just one village of Canaanites, probably, and oral legends expanded it to mean all Canaanites everywhere.

There was no invasion of the “Promised Land” by Israelites coming from Egypt.

Archeology informs us that the upland Semitic inhabitants didn’t like pigs, while those on the coast did. This was one of the differentiators that passed down through time. The coastal lowland folk ate shellfish, so of course the highland people used that too to differentiate themselves.
This is how culture works to separate people.

The upland people eventually become known as the Judahites, while the lowland folk by the sea became known as the Canaanites. After the late Assyrians wiped out a lot of people in the region, the neo-Babylonian empire came in and conquered the land. The deported ones (to Babylonian cities) finally came back to the hill country of Levant and wrote their “history” (most of the OT) to fill in what was needed to justify the ruling parties. This is what the real history books will tell you, while the rabidly religious keep to their myths.

It’s really hard to convince fundamentalists of this, of course.

it has become, not even a conflict of interests, but instead a degenerative, brutal struggle for power in which one side with righteous indignation believes only the other is and can be capable of behaving despicably

I’ve read that the “Red Sea parting” was actually the Israelites crossing over the Red Sea (or a smaller sea that they mislabeled as the Red Sea) in a marshy area that was in a flood plain.

Egyptians tried to cross in their chariots. Got bogged down and either the Israelites went back and attacked or the flood up river hit and washed them away.

Either way. No magic spaghetti monster required.

Along the same lines, the official Chinese “policy” on human evolution is that Homo erectus in China evolved into a different strain/breed/line of H. sapiens, rather than H. sapiens migrating into Asia from Africa. That’s to preserve the tradition Chinese attitude that they are the superior culture, which could not possibly have been derived from Africans wandering all over the Asian continent.

Of course, the scientific evidence does not support separate evolution of a Chinese H. sapiens, but that doesn’t stop the government from pushing an incorrect theory.

this is the bigger problem. every new crackpot theory gets instant legitimacy. Theyre at the table and now we have to —yes have to —get them back out the door. They dont belong.

debating junk science gives it a platform of legitimacy and license for the next nuttery.
we give them an ounce of respectability and then dont hold them accountable as the charlatans and liars they are

i dont need to debate “all sides of an issue”. because they arent doing science. they are doing rhetorical trickery or outright deception. they are deliberate and calculated.

If they want a seat, to be serious in the discussions, then learn the science, or the math. Then *do* the science or math. Prove your point - the same way everyone else has to. THEN publish it, let it be opened up to be torn apart, replicated, verified, peer reviewed etc.

you earn a seat - like you earn respect.

He just said when you hear Trump says The American People he is talking about Trump supporters, his base.

So, when you hear Trump say “these leaks are hurting America or the American people he is saying they are hurting Trumps supporters and they know that and that is why they support Trump.

In yet other news, Trump told folks in Upstate New York that they should move, leave their homes and families behind, to go where the jobs are.

What’s especially funny about this is that one of the best predictors of Trump support is living within a few miles of where you grew up. Makes sense, right? Trump wasn’t just promising that he’d bring back jobs. He promised to bring back the specific jobs that went away.

Now? ‘Get off your asses and go find the jobs!’

Meanwhile, the other day, Trump was telling folks in Ohio (I think) that all the empty factories were gonna come back and they should just stay where they are, because “we’re gonna bring it all back.”

When we rode The Octopus, it went so fast, it was only the substantial size of my companions that I was wedged between that kept me in the spinning thing we were sitting in, instead of flinging me by centrifugal force out of it like it did the glasses off of one friend’s face.

To be accurate, I think Trump told the people in upstate New York that they should specifically move to Wisconsin, since that’s “where the jobs are”, or supposed to be. I’m guessing the comment was a generalized dig at The Cheeto’s “home” state*: - iow, Wisconsin has a Republican administration, therefore has to be some sort of economic Utopia, New York is a hellhole of high taxes, welfare cheats and libruls in general, so obviously no opportunities there…..
Probably wrong on all counts, but consider the source….

* the most agonizing moral decision many New Yorkers would have to deal with would be drinking too much, having to pee REALLY badly, and then going into the bathroom and finding Donald Trump on fire…

I would argue these people are predisposed to want an authority figure (a male one) to tell them everything will be OK, because he will make it happen. A father figure, IOW. They don’t understand the complexities of business or economics, so they don’t understand why those factory jobs are gone forever. So, when Trump says he can fix it, they believe him because they want to believe. To do otherwise means they have to accept the grim reality that they are SOL, or (Dog forbid) could have voted for a woman.

There’s a lot of irony here, like these folks are quick to bitch about other people being ‘entitled’, but they feel they are entitled to a good job in their hometowns.

And they see themselves as the ‘REAL Americans’, whereas the ones they deride as ‘snowflakes’ are much more likely to have left their homes behind to make a better life for themselves - you know, kinda like the folks who built America?

But leaving aside kicking people while they’re down for just a moment, think about it - a lot of these folks saw the factories leaving and hunkered down, staying put as their prospects dwindled and with them their bank accounts and their home values. Trump told them he’d make it all better and in their desperation, they believed him.

Now he tells them their hometowns are dead, and they should all move.

I would guess that legalization has led to a few more people using. People who might have used in the past but didn’t have a connection who could now get it very easily. I’d probably be in that category once legalization comes through in California. The longer they stay, the harder it is to leave. If everyone is leaving and the town is dying, then there’s nobody to buy your house. For someone who is a homeowner, the bit of money they’d get from a sale would at least give them a nest egg to help start over in a new town (a way to cover rent and utilities while you search for a new job).

And that’s the other thing, it’s hard to get a (nonprofessional) job when you don’t live in the area. You submit an application or resume and the address you give is a two hour flight away, it’s hard to imagine it’s going to get past the first screening.

re: #299 KGxvi

The longer they stay, the harder it is to leave. If everyone is leaving and the town is dying, then there’s nobody to buy your house. For someone who is a homeowner, the bit of money they’d get from a sale would at least give them a nest egg to help start over in a new town (a way to cover rent and utilities while you search for a new job).

And that’s the other thing, it’s hard to get a (nonprofessional) job when you don’t live in the area. You submit an application or resume and the address you give is a two hour flight away, it’s hard to imagine it’s going to get past the first screening.

Exactly. How are you supposed to do this, anyway? Send Dad to Wisconsin while Mom and the kids pack up in hopes? Where’s Dad staying? What’s Dad give as an address? You KNOW Foxconn isn’t gonna pay moving expenses, and if all the unemployed Dads in Upstate NY are all camping in Wisconsin applying for jobs, they won’t have to pay a hell of a lot, either. Certainly not enough to cover moving.

It’s like in ‘Grapes of Wrath’, when the Joads are reading the flyers, passed out by the thousands, promising good wages for honest work in beautiful California, with the goal of getting a glut of labor so they could pay even less.

The big difference, though, between LBJ and Trump is that the former knew how to act in “public”: he kept the swearing and dirty language (and Texas-style political thuggery) well off-the grid: and made sure his people did the same: Johnson came from the Old School of politics: the “front” -one’s public reputation and/or image - was everything.
