There was a study put up here not too long ago about the different successful systems. The only thing they had in common - some were private insurance, some were single payer, some single provider - is that the government negotiated rates on behalf of the people.

These are native wildflowers! They grow in a few isolated places in the Santa Monica Mountains - Serano Canyon is reliable. Amongst the vast amounts of Chamise, Sumac, Sunflowers, Invasive Mustard and so on are 15 individual plants in a one square meter plot near the stream (of course). Most people just walk on by - but if you are paying attention….
I use a Tripod, ring macro flash and the following settings to get the black background:
Manual Exposure: 1/90 of second speed, F22, ISO 100 or so. The flash is set to 1/2 power. Looking through the 3 inch LCD screen the scene is completely black. The flash lights up a small amount of area at best. If I angle the shot correctly, there is nothing but air behind the shot and the photo looks like I hung a black cloth.
I checked out Mr. Pinkers. Wow! Several levels above my skill set.
From my web site:
Epipactis gigantea, a species of orchid, is commonly known as stream orchid or giant helleborine. This wildflower, found along the Pacific Coast from British Columbia to central Mexico is one of the most abundant orchids - we are fortunate to find this plant growing in our Santa Monica Mountains.

the GPS coordinates are embedded in the images. Parking at Sycamore Canyon is $12. The hike is about two miles one way. You have to be looking for these plants. Look for several bunches of Bright Yellow Monkey flowers and then start looking carefully for the Stream Orchids. I know what these flowers look like, knew they were there and I still had to take a second look to find them.

The video brought back good memories of going to the Undergraduate Library at the University of Texas at Austin and requesting that they play the entire “Cars” album. The library’s record collection was there for things like “learning French” but they also had a lot of popular music you could request. The cubes also had small televisions and you could borrow a pair of headphones and watch local TV. Lotta people I know would wander up there every afternoon to watch “General Hospital” in the early days of “Luke and Laura.”
Living in the co-op and only being a few blocks from the biggest library in the Southwest are some of my favorite memories of Austin. Yeah, I’m smiling.

looks like up the right branch about dead center?
I don’t know if this got posted here; it is of personal interest to me because I used to see the Uber Volvos driving north and south on Priest in Tempe when I left work. I won’t be seeing them any more for the time being as Uber is shutting down its operations here. And damn well they should. The car was under computer control at the time of the crash, but the automatic braking had been disabled.
According to the preliminary report of the National Transportation Safety Board, Uber’s sensors first perceived Herzberg about six seconds before impact—more than twice the commonly accepted reaction-time of 2.5 seconds. But the sensors struggled to classify Herzberg (first as an unknown object, then as a car, then as a bicycle) and determine her expected path across the road. At 1.3 seconds before impact, the system determined emergency braking was required, a function that was disabled under computer control “to reduce the potential for erratic vehicle behavior.”
There’s more at the link:
Which is a significant rehash of the NTSB preliminary report:
What a cluster****. I hate* Gov. Doug Ducey, he invited Uber here, they basically took advantage of our no-regulation environment and a woman was needlessly killed. Thankfully Google’s Waymo is apparently much better at what it’s doing, but I’m still going to be nervous about these cars.

Turned out to be a good thing I got those ribs. The pork butt took until 8:30 (7 1/2 hours in the smoker, 2 hours in the oven once it stalled at 175), then had to rest for a hour. Now it’s been taken apart and the meat pulled, and a lot of the tasty scraps given to Rango.

Meanwhile, here in Europe, Italian politics is - as usual - a mess.
TL;DR version; most likely, there will be a snap election in Italy, probably sometime later this summer (about two or three months from now). And that snap election is going to be an unofficial referendum on whether Italy stays in the Eurozone or not.
Italy crashing out of the EZ, returning to the Lira and effectively defaulting on its 2.3 trillion Euro debt ($2.7 trillion USD) would have catastrophic effects on Italy’s already stagnant economy - and those catastrophic effects would invariably cascade throughout the EU; bank failures, etc.
The effect of Italy pulling out of the EZ would basically be like the Greek financial crisis on steroids.

The Italian populist parties (left and right) are more like “Free us from the slavery of the European Central Bank (aka, Berlin)!”
On that, at least, there’s consensus among the populists; it’s a fairly unifying theme.
Italy’s economy has been fairly stagnant for the last two decades - coupled with a lack of any meaningful economic reforms, and it’s perhaps not surprising that the populists, left and right, are now in such a powerful position.
Powerful enough to blow up the Eurozone if they followed through on their thinly-veiled plans to pull Italy out of the EZ and repudiate the roughly 2 trillion Euro debt they’re sitting on top of.

Top North Korean official on his way to U.S. for talks on Trump-Kim summit (WaPo)
TOKYO — A top North Korean official is on his way to United States for talks about a landmark summit between Kim Jong Un and President Trump, as efforts to the make the meeting happen go into overdrive.
Kim Yong Chol, a four-star general who has been at the forefront of North Korea’s diplomatic outreach, landed at Beijing Capital International Airport on Tuesday, according to television footage from the airport.
He was initially booked on an Air China flight to Washington but changed it to a Wednesday flight bound for New York, South Korea’s Yonhap News Agency reported. That would have him arriving at John F. Kennedy International Airport shortly after 2 p.m. Wednesday.
Trump confirmed that he was on his way to New York.
“We have put a great team together for our talks with North Korea,” the president tweeted Tuesday morning. “Meetings are currently taking place concerning Summit, and more. Kim Young Chol, the Vice Chairman of North Korea, heading now to New York. Solid response to my letter, thank you!”
I still think North Korea is playing us for fools.

The more I learn about the Trump campaign in 2016 the more I think ti was definitely the shadiness campaign I’ve ever seen. Full of pay offs but yeah Trumpers, Hillary was the crooked one and we “needed” Trump to clean up Washington. Trump and Bannon’s hero, Andrew Jackson was a lot of things but a reformer he was not, you can see that in Trump but I guess unlike Trump, Jackson wasn’t a coward.

Ok, now I get it. Punctuation is not his strong suit.
So, Trump is back on the “hit China with tariffs” bandwagon. This is from my email update from the Washington Post.
Trump hits China with broad limits on tech investment, moves forward with $50 billion in tariffs ahead of key trade meeting
The investment limits and tariffs are part of a broad crackdown aimed at limiting China’s ability to acquire U.S. technology.
The announcement comes less than 10 days after Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said that the trade war with China was “on hold.” Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross is due to arrive in Beijing on Saturday for talks aimed at cooling trade tensions between the two countries.
Tariffs of 25 percent will be applied to Chinese imports containing important technologies, including those related to Beijing’s Made-in-China 2025 development program, the White House said. The final tariff list will be made public by June 15 with the new import taxes taking effect shortly thereafter.
Ross is supposedly going to China this weekend. Perfect time for Trump to fire him via tweet, either while Ross is in the air or once he arrives.

Citing the logistical and financial challenges of the federal disaster response on the island, Trump quipped: “Now I hate to tell you, Puerto Rico, but you’ve thrown our budget a little out of whack, but you’re throwing our budget a little out of whack because we’ve spent a lot of money on Puerto Rico. And that’s fine; we saved a lot of lives.”

I would have to suspect that the German banks have tried to limit their risk through the use of credit default swaps and other measures. There’s a good chance that there is a great deal of exposure globally even if the banks and other institutions aren’t directly holding the debt…and that exposure isn’t going to be known by the other players which could lead to the credit markets freezing up again.

People supporting Donald Trump - our country will rise from this, and you will not be remembered kindly. His more vocal and public figures will be judged, some as sycophants, and others as traitors to our democracy. Some are, and many more will, face trial and end up in prison.

Wow, Scott, to be wrong so much. Do you really think it’s good that Trump is depositing more people in private prisons? And I really don’t see much crushing of ISIS.
Greets and saluts from the resistance in the NYC metro area.
The NYT has published an article today indicating that the awful federal response to Hurricane Maria led to more than 4,000 needless deaths in Puerto Rico.
I repeat. Trump’s depraved indifference to the plight of millions in Puerto Rico led to more than 4,000 premature deaths in Puerto Rico.
Trump doesn’t care. The GOP didn’t care.
They didn’t treat them as Americans anyways. They weren’t the right skin tone to matter.
So they ignored the plight. They didn’t mobilize our military to provide massive and prompt assistance. They spent months trying to get power restored (and it’s still not fully restored!). And thousands died as a result.

yes, and the debate conflates a business decision with some greater ideological purpose. I refuse to even look at it that way. and I am not a pro football fan…
Twitter doesn’t consider Roseanne’s tweets to be a violation of their TOS.
Thank you for your recent report. We have reviewed your report carefully and found that there was no violation of the Twitter Rules against abusive behavior (twitter.com).
There are a number of factors we take into consideration when deciding whether to take action on content:
Context matters
Some Tweets may seem to be abusive when viewed in isolation, but may not be when viewed in the context of a larger conversation. While we accept reports of violations from anyone, sometimes we also need to hear directly from the target to ensure that we have proper context. The number of reports we receive does not impact our assessment of whether something violates the Twitter Rules.
We focus on behavior
In order to ensure that people feel safe expressing diverse opinions and beliefs, we do not tolerate behavior that crosses the line into abuse, including behavior that harasses, intimidates, or uses fear to silence another user’s voice.Additionally, we enforce policies when someone reports behavior that is abusive and targets an entire protected group and/or individuals who may be members. This targeting can happen in multiple ways (e.g., mentioning someone, tagging someone in a photo, and more).
If, after you filed this original report, this person Tweeted additional content that you believe to be abusive, or if there’s additional context you think we need to know regarding this situation, please reply to this email and provide us with further details (including links to any additional Tweets).
So, they’re ignoring the context and plain English words used.
It’s abusive and repugnant, but they don’t care because it generates more tweets and eyeballs that help the company’s bottom line.

Speaking of Italy, I just read this:
Italy’s Prime Minister-designate Carlo Cottarelli is considering giving up his mandate to form a government to open the way for an election as early as July 29, two party sources said on Tuesday.
Such a move would require President Sergio Mattarella to dissolve parliament in coming days. If there were to be a vote at the end of July, caretaker Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni will stay in power until the vote, party sources said.
That’s damned fast. Only two months from now (possibly).

I learned a couple of things while geocaching with my iPhone. One of them is that even with the coordinates in hand, you still had to find the object. A 30-foot radius sounds small when you are not looking for something but becomes huge when you are! You will need to make use of your observation skills and some determination to find these guys. Of course, when you find them you may wonder why it was not so obvious. Half the fun is the hunt! Enjoy your time in the still wild lands of suburbia….

“…A year before the 1989 collapse of communism in many parts of Europe, details about Ivana Trump’s 1988 visit back to her homeland were recorded in a classified police report. The Oct. 22, 1988 report claimed that Trump refused to run for president in 1988 — despite alleged pressure to do so — because he felt, at 42, he was too young. But the secret report said he intended to run in the 1996 U.S. presidential race as an independent, when he would be 50.
“Even though it looks like a utopia, D. TRUMP is confident he will succeed,” the police report said, based on information from an unspecified source who talked to Ivana Trump’s father, Milos Zelnicek, about her visit.
It was unclear where the alleged “pressure” was coming from.

I’m not a gamer, and I understand the statistics, but it is pretty bold to make a game where you can choose to be a school shooter in a school setting. And it is of course, graphic. In today’s mess with guns, I guess I see that as going too far.

“Roseanne” Gives Advertisers A Blueprint For Connecting with Everyday Americans
“…As they prepared for the ‘Roseanne” reboot, ABC wisely advertised the Conners as a “family that looks like us [and] lives like us,” and the network successfully delivered a television revival that feels like us. The show’s heart-on-the-sleeve Midwestern working-class values and warm, funny, family-centered message proved irresistible once again to American audiences, more than 20 years after the show ended its initial run in 1997.
Interestingly, this resonated not only with the broad swath of middle-America swing voters who helped propel Donald Trump to the presidency, but with coastal audiences as well. When compared with the premiere of the “Will and Grace” revival, a nakedly anti-conservative program, the ratings for “Roseanne” blew them out of the water in cities such as New York and Los Angeles. This incredible success is expected to drive up the show’s already strong advertising rates.
Producers, programmers and advertisers stand to gain from ABC’s breakthrough by following their lead, toning down the liberal virtue signaling and focusing on producing content that connects with audiences’ hearts. Just because everything seems political these days doesn’t necessarily mean everything should be political, and in an era of pervasive politicization, advertisers have a real opportunity to reconnect with audiences by respecting their values and leaving their liberal politics out of it. “

Archaeologists working at the ancient Roman city of Pompeii, Italy, uncovered the remains of a 30-year-old man who appears to have survived the initial eruption of Vesuvius in 79 A.D., only to be killed when he was struck by a large slab of stone

I finished reading the whole Bloomberg story.
I wonder what Bruce Carter thinks of himself and of Trump, who he assisted, today?
The man sold his soul.

Thanks to @ABC cancellin’ “Roseanne”, racism will have to retreat to one its established safe spaces like Fox News or the White House.

Give it until the last 30 minutes of the trading day. That is when the real stuff happens.

I’m not sure how saying someone looks like a child of “Muslim Brotherhood and Planet of the Apes” is racist.
I thought “Muslim Brotherhood” was supposed to be a “good” thing and Liberals say we are descended from apes?
What am I missing here?
how about basic human decency?
re: #505 makeitstop
(That was Winger.)
Ted didn’t write Planet of the Apes, either, so I figured I was safe. I was just commenting on the idea that referencing titles justifies something.

At least Roseanne didn’t say Valerie Jarrett had perfect smokey eye.

He’d look better if he just admitted he fucked up.
Why? In his pin head the judge doesn’t think he did a damn thing wrong.
And low-life Brock Turner thinks he did nothing wrong either. He is trying to get his 3 counts overturned.

That again shows you what hypocrites conservatives are.

I don’t know how people like him do it. The money is not enough.
this too:
#Roseanne has been cancelled due to a racist tweet the comedian sent about #ValerieJarrett.
Roseanne also tweeted support of UK white nationalist #TommyRobinson & RT tweets implying Assange is a prisoner.@ABC never should have hired her & did so for 💰. https://t.co/s9F95mam2v— Victoria Brownworth (@VABVOX) May 29, 2018

Possibly coincidental (hah! not at all coincidental) — Disney distributes all the Marvel movies. Black Panther made a shitload of money just a couple of months ago. The sequel would probably make even more.
What odds that the director, producer, writer and cast threatened something if this cancellation didn’t happen post-haste?
p.s. George Lucas’ wife is a black woman venture capitalist from Chicago (Mellody Hobson). Longtime close friend of Valerie Jarrett.

Alberto may have failed to become tropical, but even in northern Alabama it is holding its structure well:
That damn storm is going to go all the way up to Canada dumping large amounts of rains the whole way. The entire mid-west and Ohio valley is already saturated. Here come the floods.
Saw AL Roker with a map this morning on The Today show explaining the Ellicott City floods. He brought up climate warming and how parts of the country are seeing more and more extreme weather/rains.
Tell me about it Al!

I get the idea he really didn’t make much of it. It sounds like he spent most of the money he got on his ‘campaign’ materials, requested more and was turned down.
He simply was used.
