Trump’s New Year’s Resolution: Close the Border, Cut Off All Aid to Central America

Politics • Views: 33,049

Not much to see here, just yet another incredibly, nauseatingly deranged xenophobic rant from the Thing in the Oval Office. Now he’s telling his endlessly gullible cult members that closing the border would be “a profit making operation.”

Including the requisite cruel gesture to top it off. So very Trump.

The economy lost $5 million when ONE major crossing was closed for a mere six hours.

Come the fuck on.

This is so embarrassing for our country.

Anyone else think Trump is just throwing random shit at the wall (no pun intended) to see what his cult might grab and run with?

OMFG, that drivel about the “car industry” is simpleminded nonsense even by Trump’s standards. Does he have nobody on staff with some sort of understanding of how the world’s automotive manufacturing systems actually work in year 2018 2019? (Hint: terms like “global”, “international” and “cross-ownership” might frequently occur).

And to follow up: I’m guessing this is just another example of Trump’s “thinking” (if that term even applies) being stuck somewhere in the 1970s: when the “car industry” was firmly divided between “American cars” (i.e. huge domestically-built Detroit Iron) and “foreign cars” - either luxury specialties (Mercedes, Jaguar), hippy-dippy jokes (VW Beetle), or tinpot “rice-burners” - from a era in which “Made in Japan” still had a residually negative connotation.

Either McConnell brings it to the floor and it passes, again, or he doesn’t. If he does there are certain to be 60 votes to beat a filibuster. At that point Trump either has to veto, singlehandedly owning the shutdown and have his tantrum on full display, or else be publicly owned by Nancy. Then it really doesn’t matter if there’s enough votes for a veto override, he owns it no matter what. If Mitch doesn’t bring the CR to the floor then he personally shares ownership of the shutdown with Trump, which can’t be an attractive option for him.

Basically there isn’t a single scenario where the GOP isn’t left wallowing in their own shit in front of the entire country.

I’ve always thought his world view was 70s with some of the 40s, 50s, and 60s added in probably due to his father.

And it would be bad enough if it was just Trump that “thought” this way, but he seems to have tapped into a deplorably wide vein of like-minded citizens who still hanker for the Good Old Days* and love to focus their politics-of-resentment on all those factors and actors who they see (and who demagogues like King Orangeanus continually demonize) as standing in the way of a revival of said G.O.D.’s. In which, of course, said Deplorables occupy the exalted socioeconomic position they “deserve” by being Good Real Americans….

*In automotive terms, I always image something like early-’70s “muscle cars” as being the beau ideal, i.e. huge, noisy, high-torque gas-guzzlers: mediocre engineering, but immediate and indisputably “American”.

HR-1 has already been announced.

House Democratic leaders on Friday unveiled the outline of a broad political overhaul bill that will include provisions for public financing of elections, voting rights reforms and new ethics strictures for federal officials.

The bill has been in the works for months as part of Democrats’ “For the People” campaign platform, a framework that helped them win the House majority in this month’s midterm elections.

Traditionally, HR-1 is the defining bill of an incoming House’s platform.

I’m fine with making it HR-2 though.

This argument comes up repeatedly over the years.

Arming Jews wouldn’t have stopped the Holocaust. Most Jews murdered during the Holocaust lived in countries other than Germany.

They were in countries protected by entire armies, air forces, and who had tanks, planes, and artillery. It did nothing to stop the onslaught of the Nazi forces. A few guns in the hands of Jews didn’t stop the Nazis either.

The Nazis systematically stripped rights from Jews leading up to the Holocaust.

If you read the form letter, it’s not even in lieu of rent. You’re basically working for your landlord just to pay a lower rent, with the understanding that you’re still responsible for the rest of the rent at a later time. So if you’re living paycheck to paycheck, you basically have to set up a payment plan with your landlord to cover December’s rent and January’s.

And it would be precisely the same here (the claim guns in private hands are to prevent a tyrannical government).

What prevents tyrannical government is a robust democratic electoral system that prevents tyrants from being elected to subvert the military.

Once the tyrants are in place, the military can be used against opponents of the government.

Almost all revolutions to overthrow tyrants (including our own) require intervention from an outside state, not partisans within the state.

This house was erected in 1914 and originally did not have indoor plumbing. That was added in the 1950’s. As such, it was not designed for plumbing. (During the Fifties when polio eradication was underway and the Public Health Service mandated all homes had to have indoor plumbing to fight the disease, many homes in this area were simply abandoned as too expensive to retrofit.)

What’s preventing self-regulating heat tape in an insulated duct? Should be safer and cheaper than what you’ve described.

I currently have heat tape on part of the plumbing (it is not self-regulating though). That’s another thing I can look into (seeing if heat tape over the rest of the plumbing will solve the problem). Usually it’s my hot water pipe that freezes; this is the first time my cold water pipe froze.

Faux crowd still pressing heavily the idea that the Dems are somehow missing an “opportunity” to “negotiate” for DACA/Dreamers in exchange for wall money. None of them seem to be asking why, if Trump is such an awesome “dealmaker, he is not making this suggestion himself. The reason (of course) is because it’s not about making a “deal,” it’s about asserting his dominance to appease the base he ticked off by suggesting he’d sign the CR without wall funding.

Perhaps I can get a contractor to look at my cellar and see if there’s a way to improve the insulation down there.

Our house likewise, an old farmhouse from the turn of the 20th century.

Ben Stein was on Fox Business an hour or so ago ostensibly to talk/put down Universal Basic Income.

That eventually devolved into him complaining about how his son and his family are freeloading off of him right now.

Then he threw his wife under the bus, implying that if it wasn’t for her, he’d have kicked them all out at this point.

I don’t take any particular pleasure in others’ misery, but man, that was fucked up. You could tell the host was taken aback by what he was saying. She had no idea how to respond to him.

My son and his new girlfriend spent Christmas week with me and his stepmom here in western Washington, and had a blast. She grew up in New Delhi, and was a fan of the Twilight books as a girl, and yesterday they drove out to Forks and the Pacific Coast where the books are set. They had a blast and even came home with a bag of beach clay.
Today we dropped them off at 3am for an airport shuttle back to SeaTac for a 7am flight back to Albuquerque, came home and went to bed. Phone rings at 6:15am. Their flight to ABQ has been cancelled because of the blizzard in ABQ (the one thing none of us thought to check was the weather for them back home) and they can’t fly until tomorrow morning. So, they’re spending a day sleeping at a Tacoma Airbnb.

Illegals tried to buy guns… .but were prevented from doing so (because the law worked?!).

This is what Fox and Tomi think are winning arguments? The GOP has fought to loosen gun control laws. They’ve sought unfettered access to guns. They’ve fought tooth and nail to prevent any kind of reasonable gun control, and then block efforts to restrict guns to certain groups that are at high risk of causing violence - whether it’s domestic violence offenders, or mentally ill. They block closing various loopholes, or taking actions to stop the iron pipelines from lax gun law states to those that have strong gun laws.

They ignore that the lax gun law states have a far higher per capital gun death rate than those with strong gun laws.

But this is where Fox and Tomi are?

They don’t care about gun violence unless it’s a terrorist or an “illegal alien”. They are silent when law enforcement officers are killed, unless it’s one or the other.

When Americans slaughter their fellow Americans, they chalk it up to the watering of the tree of liberty or some such bulkshit. But if it’s a terrorist, then they’re all for doing something, right up until someone points out that gun control would help prevent future occurrences. Then they move to block any and all actions.

I was with a college group, we aimed to spend a month in Mexico, and get college credits for it. Most of us were taking a train to Guadalajara to meet our teacher and a couple others. We started in Mexicali. We missed our train. We caught the next one going our way. It was a second class train, had to wait for connections all over. We spent six hours in Benjamin Hill, Sonora waiting for the train from Nogales. Took 3 hours to find out that much information. We got to Guadalajara, 3 days late. Found notes to us all over the train station. My chops were cut.

That’s great! I had some interesting conversations on the Greyhound buses. And I have always loved staring out the window while moving past the landscape. One of my life goals is to travel down the western coast of Japan on a series of local trains. In some places the tracks are wedged between mountains and the ocean and the sights are stunning.

Oh, man, that’s awful. Incidentally, I wanted to go to France, but the small company that did exchanges with my high school couldn’t work that out—only had home stays in Brazil and Japan. I chose Japan for reasons I still don’t understand. That was 1982.

I competed in a statewide Rotary International questionnaire and essay contest in Michigan in 1975, where they selected two people from the state to go to another country for a year.

My mother let me enter it, convinced that of the thousands entering I would not be selected, and that would teach me about setting goals too high and disappointment.

I was selected based on the strength of my essay on the Vietnam War (the same question was put to everyone), then she was really concerned because we didn’t have the money to pay the airfare (though she didn’t tell me that). She got lucky (she won $5,000 in the state lottery on a scratch ticket).

She only told me about the lottery win paying for the trip about ten years ago.

I’m not a Twilight fan… but when I was in that part of the world, I really enjoyed my Twin Peaks locations excursion.

I have a funny story. I’ll start by saying I enjoyed the Twilight books. I spent a week in CA a few years ago and got to live through an earthquake. A big one. It freaked me the fuck out. I left El Centro as soon as I could and spent the night in San Diego before flying home the next day.

I drank (something I almost never do) in my hotel room. And cried.

I couldn’t stop crying. I had PTSD for like three months. I cried for months.

So I’m at the airport. Crying. Go through security. Crying. I’m in the seat in the plane reading one of the Twilight books and crying.

I wound up chatting with the gal in the next seat. She thought I was crying over Twilight.

That was the first time in a week that I laughed.

Yeah, in college I took the bus back a couple of times from Atlanta to my home in Illinois. It involved a six-hour lay over in the Indianapolis bus terminal. You see some pretty amazing things at 2AM in a bus terminal. People offer to sell you some stuff, too….

Been there. One year I took a Greyhound from Toronto to Pittsburgh to visit my wife (girlfriend at the time). I left at 9 pm on a Friday and got into the Pittsburgh terminal at noon the next day, partly due to the fact I had to deal with a 6 hour layover in Buffalo, NY. I didn’t get much sleep that night and I lost track of the number people who asked me to bum a smoke or if I had a light.

The drive to Pittsburgh from Buffalo was long because it wasn’t an express route and the bus stopped in all kinds of random small towns in PA before reaching the big city.

No regrets though, that was a fun little adventure.

Whoa. Great story! How was Brazil?

It was during the time of the military dictatorship there, so not mentioning politics while I was there was the smart way to go.

I loved the heck out of it. It is a beautiful country, and the people are fantastic. I lived with a Lebanese refugee family who’d done well for themselves there and owned a coffee plantation and a shoe factory. Though both parents are now deceased, I still write the children who were my brother and sister there.

I also set a new bar at the state-run school I’d attended. The school put me in 2nd year Portuguese class (think of that like an exchange student with no knowledge of English here being put in second year English in high school). I busted my butt and managed to squeak out a “C” grade for my final grade (the proudest I was of any high school class).

I was the first American they ever had who’d passed the course.

Womp womp: Dershowitz cries that CNN doesn’t call him any more

Former Harvard law professor Alan Dershowitz lamented Thursday the state of politics in America that has driven him into the arms of Fox News while getting him nothing but a cold shoulder from CNN.

“It’s been harder for me to get on anti-Trump networks,” the perennial TV guest said on CSPAN’s “Washington Journal.” “Not that I’m craving to be on television all the time. I have a good life. But it has had an impact on which channels seek my services more often, and that’s a change because I used to be on CNN more often than on Fox, I was a regular.”

Two things Sen. Cornyn ought to know better about:

2. Snark aside, Cornyn has been around the Senate long enough to know what the sitch is re the budget vote. He has to know what the Dems are planning, and certainly what the GOP strategy is (isn’t he the Republican Whip??). Hoyer (D-Md.) said in a statement to The Washington Post. “In this instance, the integrity of our democratic process outweighs concerns about the seat being vacant at the start of the new Congress.”

Republican pols are going to blow up their state economies out of fear of Trumps tweets.

Same here. On one hand, Gov. Ricketts praised Donald Trump for his NAFTA 2.0 (because Mexico is Nebraska’s second-largest trading partner), on the second hand he sent a trade mission to Mexico which he described as “successful,” on the third hand when Trump was talking about sending troops to the border to boost his election chances, he was all in on sending formations of the Nebraska National Guard there.

He blows whichever way Trump does.

Twitter is like panning for gold. Every once in awhile you find a nugget!

Give a million chimps typewriters and eventually you’ll get a work of Shakespeare.

I think that is supposed to be an infinite number of Twitter monkeys in infinite time and the target text isn’t Shakespeare but an episode of The Simpsons.
