Unfortunately, no - issues cited are expensive filters, poor filtration of dust and dander, and relatively loud, even st low speeds.

Overall rating: 23 (lowest 18, highest 86) - but at that price, it may be worth it….YMMV.

Anyone have any experience with a Dyson hot/cold air purifier fan? Is it worth it? It’s on sale for like $350.

In his last (very long) podcast, Dr. Osterholm from the U of M brings up an air purifier that you can make with a specific furnace filter and a box fan. He’s really desperate to see schools do something (anything) about indoor air quality. His podcasts are not full of optimism.

35
Eric The Fruit Bat  Aug 27, 2021 • 7:33:16pm

re: #34 stpaulbear

Yeah, I saw that, and dirtcheap to make. Gotta use highest MERV-rated 20x20 furnace filters and a 20” box fan. Key to making it is a good fan cutout and preferably good sealing all-around.

Damn. That’s a shame. I was looking at it as a fan with the added bonus is filtering. But this is expensive and poorly rated. That’s a total no go.

I have 2 Dysons. The original heater and the original Pure Cool Link.

I use the heater in the winter and it assists my gas “efficient” wall heater. The wall heater takes at least 3 hours to warm up my main room. The Dyson heater is used as the heater gets started. It also kicks in during cold rain storms.

The Pure Cool Link moves a lot of year. Filters last around 6 months but I take them out after 4 because they really fill up with dust.

Do these morons know that there is, in fact, a form of Ivermectin that is specifically for human use?

Instead, in their combination of desperation and willful stupidity, they’re ingesting livestock deworming paste. And quite literally shitting themselves in public.

Ivermectin is not the cure for COVID-19. But FFS, if they want to take it, at least take the stuff that’s meant for use in people, not farm animals.

They can’t find doctors to prescribe it, so they buy the uncontrolled form. They do the same thing with antibiotics at the local feed stores, or they cross into Mexico and buy who knows what.

I fixed my flat tire today. Tube patches have come a long way in 55 years. I remember cutting a thick piece of rubber and coating it with some cement. IIRC you used to have to light it on fire too. Today I just peeled a super thin clear sticker off the paper and placed it on the hole and I was done. When I put the back wheel on all the parts found their places, the disc brakes worked, the motor worked, and the derailleur worked. I rode 5 miles and it seems to be holding air just fine. This was the first flat I’ve had since I was 10. Back then our neighborhood had goathead thorns and I hated them I fixed flats weekly in the summer. I’m pretty sure there was some goathead eradication program as they are gone now.

Gee what flavor did KKKandy get—Delta or Lambda?

Most likely Delta.

Even though Delta is burning through Czech Republic (and the EU generally), our numbers are still pretty low. The country’s top epidemiologist, Dr. Roman Prymula, reckons that’s because a staggering 85% of the population has been infected with COVID-19 since March of last year. That’s just the percentage of the population that actually had the disease - he’s not counting the fully or partially vaccinated.

As he said on Czech TV the other night, “We are, almost certainly, the most infected country in the EU and quite possibly, the world. We have reached herd immunity, though at the cost of about 40,000 dead.”

As I’ve been posting here all pandemic about this housing price thing it’s no surprise to me that house prices in the “sun belt” have jumped 20% or so.

112
Love-Child of Cassandra and Sisyphus  Aug 27, 2021 • 11:27:35pm

What has happened during this pandemic is that people with money have gone ahead and bid up houses while the supply has been very tight (due to the pandemic.)

And I contend that the financial market and banking system cannot allow the prices to come down (or at least not very much), so there will be an effort to keep housing prices up.

All of this works out to the idea that we are reverting to an older, feudalistic, system, where land ownership becomes the domain of the wealthy, and most people live on land at the whims of the wealthy.

There are two notorious cranks with yards full of pro-Trump anti-Biden stuff in our town.* They happen to live two doors apart from each other. For the past few months realtors have been hitting up local FB to try to find out ahead of time who might be selling. Like many places, the market has been so hot that sellers are getting more than the asking price. Except for a home across the street from these two clowns—it’s been on the market for about 6 weeks. There could be lots of reasons it isn’t selling, but having over-the-top full-yard displays showing anger at the 2020 election probably isn’t helping things.

*more than two, actually.

hi

This popped up:

The New Chief Chaplain at Harvard? An Atheist. (New York Times)

The elevation of Greg Epstein, author of “Good Without God,” reflects a broader trend of young people who increasingly identify as spiritual but religiously nonaffiliated.

The Puritan colonists who settled in New England in the 1630s had a nagging concern about the churches they were building: How would they ensure that the clergymen would be literate? Their answer was Harvard University, a school that was established to educate the ministry and adopted the motto “Truth for Christ and the Church.” It was named after a pastor, John Harvard, and it would be more than 70 years before the school had a president who was not a clergyman.

Nearly four centuries later, Harvard’s organization of chaplains has elected as its next president an atheist named Greg Epstein, who takes on the job this week.

Mr. Epstein, 44, author of the book “Good Without God,” is a seemingly unusual choice for the role. He will coordinate the activities of more than 40 university chaplains, who lead the Christian, Jewish, Hindu, Buddhist and other religious communities on campus. Yet many Harvard students — some raised in families of faith, others never quite certain how to label their religious identities — attest to the influence that Mr. Epstein has had on their spiritual lives.

“There is a rising group of people who no longer identify with any religious tradition but still experience a real need for conversation and support around what it means to be a good human and live an ethical life,” said Mr. Epstein, who was raised in a Jewish household and has been Harvard’s humanist chaplain since 2005, teaching students about the progressive movement that centers people’s relationships with one another instead of with God.

The article goes on to talk to several religious people of many faiths who all support the election by all the chaplaincies of Mr. Epstein. He becomes the first atheist in the position since the college was founded. No pressure.

Afghan Girls’ Robotics Team Denies Being Rescued by Oklahoma Woman (Gawker, August 27, 2021)

Over the past week, an Oklahoma woman named Allyson Reneau has been going on a media tour telling various outlets that she is responsible for helping rescue the Afghan all-girl robotics team from Kabul amid the Taliban’s takeover in Afghanistan.

To that, the team’s lawyer has to say: Not quite.

Kim Motley, a lawyer for the team’s parent organization the Digital Citizen Fund (DCF), sent a cease-and-desist letter to Reneau on Wednesday telling her to quit taking credit for the girls’ evacuation to Qatar and putting them and their families at risk by running her mouth, per the Washington Post.

“Continuingly recycling old pictures with the Afghan Girls Robotics Team, many of whom are minors, as validation that you had anything to do with their immensely stressful and dangerous escape not only impacts the safety of the girls but it also significantly affects the safety of the members of the team who still remain in Afghanistan,” Motley wrote. “It is highly unfortunate that you would use such a tragically horrible situation … for what appears to be your own personal gain.”

The point is, of course, to give ammo to their whataboutism. “Ok, yes, we do this is Russia, but you do/did do that in your country too! Checkmate, Russophobes!”

However, the idea that a person can speak out against an abuse in another country, while simultaneously speaking out against that abuse in their own country, is a completely alien concept to them. All people are either traitors, or mindless ethically barren supporters of anything their government does, and there is nothing in the middle, because that’s what they’ve been shoving in Russian people’s heads for decades now.

China was doing this recently, because they apparently are into Tiger Diplomacy, which apparently means being an aggressively stupid asshole on teh twitters while shooting your privates off. Their answer to criticism about the Uyghurs is to point out that the United States committed genocide against the native peoples. The answers that flood in are yes, that was a genocide, and that China seems to be happy to compare their treatment of the Uygurs to that, so what does that tell you. That’s usually the end of the “discussion.”

I suppose there could be a kernel of truth in there for some people.

ARE YOU PART OF THE PANDEMIC’S PANDENTISTRY BOOM? (Weekly World News, August 15, 2021)

Marsha Vickers was never happy with her smile. “I knew I had a weird bite,” she said. “My front and bottom teeth don’t quite touch.”

But the Providence lawyer thought that was just the way things would always be. “Here I am in my life,” she said. “I have my career, a husband, a child. I have a flow of existence. I couldn’t just stop and get braces.”
SHE COULD!

Then came the COVID-19 pandemic, and with it various health and safety protocols. “Most of them were a nuisance, but a tolerable nuisance,” she said. “I understood social distancing even though it felt alienating. I got a vaccine even though I was a little scared.”

But the most controversial health measure proved to be the one that benefitted her the most. “At first I was very hostile to the idea of masks,” she said. “I was skeptical of their health benefits and concerned that the made people braver than the science thought was advisable. But then I realized that if I was wearing a mask, people couldn’t see my mouth. And then I realized that if people couldn’t see my mouth, maybe it was the perfect time to fix my bite.’

Vickers went straight to the orthodontist and got braces. Nine months later, her bite is better than ever. And not a single person ever suspected. “For my job, I just did phone calls instead of Zooms,” she said. “And whenever I was out, I was masked up.”

Whataboutism is a disease in itself.

I recall seeing a meme “I would rather support a cop than a criminal”

As if the two had to be mutually exclusive…

And I recall that right after 9/11 the Chinese justified their crackdown on the Uighurs as part of the broader War on Terror and nobody complained very loudly about what they were doing at the time.

The only thing that comes close in the USA is the 1993 Four Corners Hantavirus Outbreak. Since that does not spread human-to-human, like Louie, that makes no sense.

There’s also the ongoing HIV pandemic, but lockdowns wouldn’t have anything to do with that either.

Researchers discover world’s ‘northernmost’ island (Yahoo!, with photo, not sure why they put northernmost in quotes)

Scientists have discovered what is believed to be the world’s northernmost landmass — a yet-to-be-named island north of Greenland that could soon be swallowed up by seawaters.

Researchers came upon the landmass on an expedition in July, and initially thought they had reached Oodaaq, up until now the northernmost island on the planet.

“We were informed that there had been an error on my GPS which had led us to believe that we were standing on Oodaaq Island,” said the head of the mission, Morten Rasch from Copenhagen University’s department of geosciences and natural resource management.

“In reality, we had discovered a new island further north, a discovery that just slightly expands the kingdom” of Denmark, he added.

The National Hurricane Center out with a new tropical forecast.

Tropical Depression Ten has formed in the Atlantic. This storm will not be a threat to land.

Hurricane Ida is rapidly intensifying. The storm surge forecast has been increased to fifteen feet above ground level wherever the storm makes landfall and to its immediate east. Staying near the landfall area means you will die.

SUMMARY OF 700 AM CDT…1200 UTC…INFORMATION
———————————————————————
LOCATION…24.4N 85.7W
ABOUT 385 MI…620 KM SSE OF THE MOUTH OF THE MISSISSIPPI RIVER
ABOUT 440 MI…710 KM SSE OF NEW ORLEANS LOUISIANA
MAXIMUM SUSTAINED WINDS…85 MPH…140 KM/H
PRESENT MOVEMENT…NW OR 315 DEGREES AT 16 MPH…26 KM/H
MINIMUM CENTRAL PRESSURE…985 MB…29.09 INCHES

Hurricane watches have been extended to the east and west of the warning area, primarily due to rapid intensification of the storm.

Ida is expected to become a major hurricane just after midnight on Sunday. It will still have about a day to intensify before it makes landfall in the hurricane warning area.

By 1AM Wednesday it is expected to be a tropical depression located over the flooded areas of Tennessee, then cross Kentucky and far-west Virginia before being downgraded to a post-tropical depression over West Virginia.

nhc.noaa.gov

The tropical storm windfield will reach the northern Gulf of Mexico coast early Sunday morning as the size of the storm expands. Explosive growth is expected as it passes over an unusually warm area of the Gulf.

On the issuance of an early Hurricane Warning (they are normally issued only thirty-six hours before a landfalling storm), I’m betting that President Biden’s talk with FEMA and state governors in the affected area involved a little arm-twisting of NOAA to get them to issue the warning days early to get the disaster declarations, emergency orders, and evacuations under way as soon as possible.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has been untouchable for the past year as he commanded the Republican culture wars to become heir apparent to Donald Trump. The latest coronavirus surge is starting to change that,” Politico reports.

“Covid infection rates continue to climb as the state faces shortages of health care staff, morgue space and even oxygen for patients. About 16,000 people are hospitalized. Child infection rates have shot up. School districts — even in Republican strongholds — have rebelled against DeSantis’ anti-mask mandates. And cruise lines are resisting DeSantis’ vaccine passport ban. Even his recent poll numbers are slipping.”

I’ve ridden out several tropical storms and hurricanes either at sea or on the coast when I was in the Navy, but the last hurricane was a “mud hurricane” when I lived in Oklahoma.

A mud hurricane is created by specific conditions: Before a tropical system comes to an area of normally dry land, that land has to receive considerable amounts of rain, followed by very hot weather warming the saturated ground to the point that evaporating water and rising heat will support a tropical system.

What about a criminal cop?
Head explodes…..

And this is the issue that came to an ugly head in Ferguson, MO: District Attorneys are used to cooperating with police departments to obtain indictments and convictions.

When a policeman is the object of an investigation, this creates a conflict of interest and could compromise future relations between the DA and the police force…

They put Pruneface McPussywhipped in the Oval Office but he quickly abandoned them as soon as Nancy’s White House Astrologer advised them it was time.

It was then that they started a long-term campaign to put their people in at all levels of public administration, law, education, the military, etc., to ensure that they would not get cast aside again. Heck, with Mike Pence, they were within one dicky heartbeat of the Presidency.

End of the Line for Uber (Medium)

Accounting tricks and tech gimmickry don’t matter when the coffers are empty.

In the meantime, they destroyed a number of taxicab companies in the libertarian quest of “creative destruction” (usually rendered more simply as “destruction”).

Uber is a bezzle (“the magic interval when a confidence trickster knows he has the money he has appropriated but the victim does not yet understand that he has lost it”). Every bezzle ends.

Uber’s time is up.

Uber was never going to be profitable. Never. It lured drivers and riders into cars by subsidizing rides with billions and billions of dollars from the Saudi royal family, keeping up the con-artist’s ever-shifting patter about how all of this would some day stand on its own.

Like the pretense that self-driving cars would eliminate all their labor costs. They knew this would never happen. They spent billions on a doomed effort, then had to bribe another company with a $400m “investment” to take its window-dressing away.

pluralistic.net

Uber didn’t need self-driving cars — it needed us to think it would have self-driving cars. That way the company’s Saudi owners could raise investment capital from subsequent “investors” (AKA “suckers”) all the way up to the IPO, cash out, and walk away, whistling innocently.

That’s the bezzle at work — a dazzle op that keeps new money flowing in, convincing people that a pile of shit this big must have a pony beneath it. But as the years went by, the stories that Uber told us about its path to profitability got more and more fanciful.

The mission’s next few days “will be the most dangerous period to date,” the White House warned.

The troops there have at most three wake-ups.

That last chalk (helicopter) out is going to be a real nail biter. Just one E3 going missing (getting mugged and the leadership not counting correctly) could end up a major international incident.

I suspect that the final team out is going to include the battalion commander, company commander and platoon commander. Or C team and B team commanders if a Special Forces Team.

Uber is also a scam that is run like a lot of companies who insist that their workers, who have no other clients, are not free to negotiate fees or prices, and work regular shifts are somehow still to be considered “freelancers”.

There were even restaurants who tried the scam of hiring “free lance” waiters, who “rented” the tables from the restaurant, “bought” the food from the kitchen and “sold” it to the customer…

The Bernie Madoff of the taxi world.

The BS worker misclassification initiative they got passed in California they are trying to ram through now in Massachusetts. Hopefully they won’t fall for it.

The biggest failure of the mountain of failure of Uber is the claim that it would reduce traffic, by putting more private cars on the road to replace light rail, buses, and taxicabs.

Uber also signed up restaurants for their scam app, promising increased numbers of customers. After increasing their cut, and “optimising” searches, they opened ghost kitchens to drive customer orders away from the actual restaurants, cutting them out entirely.

That model is okay for a short-term part-time job, but not as a full-time profession.

And those are the criteria they look for at least in some parts of the world.

Do you have only one major client?
Are you free to negotiate rates and determine your working hours?
Are you active on the market?

That applies in my case: I have 2-3 major clients who generate the bulk of my income but several other smaller, occasional customers and some one-offs, and I have different rates for each of them.

Congressional candidate Kimberly Klacik says her fellow Black conservative made false statements about her in a June 22 video posted to social media

Conservative talking head Candace Owens has never been one to mince words and now that’s gotten her into some legal trouble.

According to The Baltimore Sun, the political commentator is being sued by Kimberly Klacik, another Black conservative, for defamation. Klacik, a former Republican congressional candidate, alleged that in June, Owens made false statements about her in an Instagram video which caused her to lose a book deal and led to several politicians backing out of her fundraising events.

As a result, she is now suing for a whopping $20M.

What has always sat wrong with me with all of the shared economy type companies is that they are all so obviously an attempt to shift the financial risks onto someone else. Building thousands and thousands of hotel rooms would cost billions with millions spent on upfront analysis on location, cash flow, and more. Creating a company providing taxi services in hundreds of cities would have huge upfront costs. It’s a lot cheaper to get thousands of people to offer up their, homes, their cars, and their investments and then skim off of each transaction. If someone makes a poor decision on whether thir property location makes sense for short term rental, no problem - doesn’t create any addition shut down costs. If someone wears and tears their car so much that it needs to be replaced in three years, no problem - you know who pays for the replacement

He has no use for them, in that he has no means of making money off them.

A fellow I knew once came and told me he was buying a greyhound.

I was amazed as he was not a dog person at all and lived mostly in his camper van and worked free-lance as an engineering contractor for electronics companies around Phoenix.

But he explained that as a single fellow with no mortgage or dependents to set off against his free-lancing income, he needed a tax break so he was going to “purchase” a greyhound, set the purchase price and upkeep off against any winnings the dog might make in its career and at the end of three years, he could write $3,000 off his taxable income. He would never have anything to do with the dog itself directly.

(Some years later I read about police finding a mass dog grave outside Phoenix filled with greyhounds, all with their ears cut off so the tags were gone and they could not be identified.)

Some of y’all will remember when the city of Philadelphia bombed the MOVE house, and an entire city block burned down back in 1985. This year MOVE was in the news after it came out that the remains of one of the victims of the bombing, believed to be 14 YO Tree Africa (or possibly Delisha Afrida), were used by the University of Pennsylvania and Princeton.

Bones of Black children killed in police bombing used in Ivy League anthropology course

theguardian.com

Apology for same: theguardian.com

(Holy Shit! A white person’s bones would never be used in such a fashion.)

Now with that background out of the way…

Well, MOVE is still around and some former members are calling it a full-fledged cult with the usual cultie practicies one finds in these high demand groups. As with most cults, the story is complicated and not easily pulled down to a few sentences. But I guess this is as good a place to start as any:

More than a half-dozen ex-MOVE members have gone on the record in both the Murder at Ryan’s Run podcast and a blog titled Leaving MOVE 2021, alleging physical and mental abuse in MOVE, a doctrine of homophobia and colorism, and what they describe as a manipulation of the public and the media under the banner of social justice.

inquirer.com

The Philadelphia Inquirer has a page limit if you run into it. Here’s another article from Billy Penn, from earlier this month:

billypenn.com

The podcast is “Murder at Ryan’s Run” (about the unsolved murder of a former MOVE member in 2002) and a blog, Leaving MOVE. leavingmove2021.blogspot.com

To me it looks like Philadelphia authorities dealt very badly with a cult, and then the cult got worse. Maybe if the city and police hadn’t turned MOVE into a cause celebre with their abominable behavior (burning down 60 house?!?!?!) perhaps MOVE would have fallen apart of its own accord. Nearly two generations later, the descendants are still having issues!

A Mom Anon  Aug 28, 2021 • 9:04:48am

Being a mom to a shelter adopted GSD, I am going to guess that Major may have missed his socialization window as a puppy. This is what I am dealing with as far as Cleo is concerned. We got her at age 7 months and we are certain she never spent any time indoors ever in her life til she got here. She didn’t understand furniture and carpeting freaked her out until she had been here awhile. Cleo is also hypervigilant with my husband and a bit less so with my son. I am the “enemy” and am basically her food giver, outside to go potty taker, and any other things the man people don’t do. We’re having a terrible time socializing her with other dogs, I mean, how do you ask other people to let their dog be a guinea pig for that? I also don’t know anyone with a large breed dog, so that makes it tougher. So, Cleo is almost 3 and doesn’t know how to deal with other dogs at all except to bark like she’s on fire. New people are a bit easier, they just have to be warned she will jump on them and not to pay a bit of attention to her til she sits and calms down. Getting the humans to comply is harder.

Major likely missed his socialization window to some degree. Combine that with his nature to guard his people and all the activity surrounding them, he thinks he’s doing his job. The humans around him need some training too it looks like. What should happen is that a competent trainer should be spending some time at the White House with Major and going through his day to see what the triggers are. I’d bet he’s protecting his favorite person/people and thinks that is his job. We joke around here that Cleo is partly the way she is because she’s an unemployed working dog and she’s bored AF with us old sick people. Husband’s health took a downward turn shortly after we got her and things slowed way down after that. We recognize that this part is on us, it’s not Cleo’s fault. I suspect Major has created a job for himself because he doesn’t have one.

Back in the late 60s the US population had a choice of maybe 60 million or so eligible citizens over 35 to elect to the position of American Caesar. One of them, the Golden Child of a powerful and rich family was murdered, a single regrettable victim of violence among (quick Google) 13,800 or so other homicide victims that year.

“All men are created equal” as a founding principle demands that Kennedy’s murder should be treated under law and justice like any other murder, like that of a homeless man or a prostitute. Similarly the murderer should face the same levels of punishment decided on the circumstances of the crime but the tarriff should not depend purely on the political prominence of the victim(s).

I was going to downding this comment, but thought better of it, and will proffer a respectful rejoinder instead.

Robert Kennedy’s social status was, in a rare instance, irrelevant to the circumstances of his murder and the prosecution of his murderer. To be sure, Kennedy was a son of wealth (and the privileges it bought), but his assassination would have had the same import and impact had he been a working-class kid who put himself through Harvard tending bar, or whatever. And Sirhan Sirhan’s act (as noted elsewhere), was as much a crime against the whole of the American body politic as it was a personal assault against Bobby Kennedy.
And yeah, sometimes a “life sentence” should mean “life”: we all know The System is very often (“usually” to the cynic) biased and unfair, but once in a while, it should be allowed to work as intended. Regardless of the probability of a paroled Sirhan going out and shooting someone else, which is (IMO) irrelevant in this case.

Monarchies value the lives of nobility and Royalty more than the lesser creatures under their rule. I believe the judicial system of a democracy should hold itself to higher standards.

I worked for Eugene McCarthy and not RFK that year, but it was a nightmare time for Americans. We were in the midst of the Vietnam war, the great civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr was assassinated triggering a set of riots, and then RFK Jr was assassinated 5 years after his brother was assassinated. Your casual dismissal of what that meant to Americans shows a lack of understanding of that time and place and a total lack of empathy for how real people respond in the midst of one crisis after another.

“American Caesar”? Obviously your view here is that of a severe critic. Im just going to suggest that a electoral system depends on its candidates and that everyone old enough had their shot if they chose to take it. As imperfect as that landscape may be… Our system can and should be harsh on its violent attackers. From Sirhan Sirhan to everyone that brought wepons to the capitol January 6.

Worth noting that RFK’s conspiracy loving third child, Robert Jr., and his equally batshit sister, Kathleen, both support Sirhan’s release because they buy into the CT that Sirhan is not the real assassin, or at least not the only one. Sirhan himself has given up making that claim, though he still claims not to remember the shooting itself.

RFK Jr., of course, is a leading perp of the anti-vaxx industry.

The closest Our Generation analogy would be… what if somebody had shot Obama the night of the Indiana primary that guaranteed him the nomination? The country would have exploded.

RFK’s killing was that level of significant.

This isn’t just about Sirhan and the Kennedys. His attack wasn’t just on a man or family, it was an assault on the democratic process. He deprived me of my chosen candidate for President.

I couldn’t give a shit less about Sirhan. I care a lot about the next one.

In a sense, Peter Doocy’s arrival in the White House press briefing room has been to his employer’s detriment. It used to be that Fox News could spend days condemning Democratic presidents for not responding to whatever controversy its hosts had been tumbling around in their rhetorical rock polishers. Now, though, there’s Doocy, who is regularly selected by White House press secretary Jen Psaki to ask questions probably in part so that the familiar process can be beheaded early. Her exchanges with Doocy drop into the political conversation like bang snaps, crackling with life for an instant before being forgotten, the gotcha almost always redirected to the junkyard.

That’s at least in part because the questions often reflect a network or right-wing consensus that hasn’t been exposed to any significant scrutiny. Little grains of ice snowball into scandals, with Sean Hannity, Dan Bongino and whoever else packing on more and more — and then they get removed from the cooler and placed on the sidewalk. It often doesn’t take long for it to melt…

“Mr. President, there had not been a U.S. service member killed in combat in Afghanistan since February of 2020,” Doocy said. “You set a deadline. You pulled troops out. You sent troops back in. And now 12 Marines are dead. You said the buck stops with you. Do you bear any responsibility for the way that things have unfolded in the last two weeks?”

When Donald Trump was asked a similar question in March 2020 about the failure of coronavirus testing, he answered like Donald Trump: “No, I don’t take responsibility at all, because we were given a — a set of circumstances, and we were given rules, regulations, and specifications from a different time.” Rejection of the idea that he deserved blame and a pivot to his predecessor.

Biden’s been doing this longer, so he accepted blame — and then pivoted to his predecessor.

“I bear responsibility for, fundamentally, all that’s happened of late,” Biden said. “But here’s the deal: You know — I wish you’d one day say these things — you know as well as I do that the former president made a deal with the Taliban that he would get all American forces out of Afghanistan by May 1. In return, the commitment was made — and that was a year before — in return, he was given a commitment that the Taliban would continue to attack others, but would not attack any American forces.”…

At that point, though, Biden went in a different direction: He challenged Doocy to admit that he knew that his own framing of the question was unsound.

“Remember that? I’m being serious,” Biden said to Doocy.

Doocy tried to interject that Trump was no longer the president, but Biden kept at it.

“Now wait a minute,” he said. “I’m asking you a question. Is that — is that accurate, to the best of your knowledge?”

“I know what you’re talking about,” Doocy conceded, before then trying to get Biden to opine on why Americans might be frustrated with the situation in the country. Biden, after resting his head on his hands in apparent frustration, replied that Americans “have an issue that people are likely to get hurt” as they had that day.

He then returned to the prior point: that U.S. forces had avoided attack thanks to the deal made by Trump that had included a withdrawal pledge. This was the case, he said, “whether my friend will acknowledge it” or not — his friend being Doocy…

For all of the right’s focus on Biden’s mental acuity, he’s sufficiently adept at the sort of exchange seen Thursday to be able to put Doocy on the defensive…

So, like any other family that lost someone due to murder and argues that the killer shouldn’t be released?

No problem — they’re apparently devastated by the knowledge this person killed their father/grand-uncle/grand-father half a century ago may be released from custody. They seem equally or even more annoyed that he prevented the family from occupying the White House again, something they considered their natural right as Kennedys.

(I suspect they’d be amazed that anyone thought their assumption of natural superiority to be odd or even in bad taste, a common affliction of the American upper classes and the bubbles they live in).

In a society of equals, that sense of disappointment should play no part in any judicial consideration of the release of Sirhan Sirhan from custody. It may well play a decisive part in American society given its fixation with glorifying individuals and hierarchical clans.

Generally I’m of the opinion that Justice should be blind and familial demands for vengeance should not be on the scales in sentencing decisions and parole board deliberations. I’ve never lost a family member or anyone I cared for to violence and I might well change my mind if that ever happened. I don’t know.

“American Caesar”? Obviously your view here is that of a severe critic.

The form of Republican government decided on 250 years ago in the US was modelled closely on the middle-period Roman Republic, or at least what the historians of the time were portraying, with the idea of an Augustus who ruled (His Excellency the President) and a Caesar (The Spare Wheel aka the Vice President). The President was (and still is to a large extent) a dictator, directly commanding the military and with wide powers of immunity, patronage and pardon which are barely unchallenged even to this day.

I understand what you’re saying, and I upvoted it, but I have to point out that RFK’s assassination was *very* traumatizing at the time. Particularly since it came hot on the heels of MLK’s assassination only two months earlier. *Especially* as an 8 YO girl in California on that day. My parents were letting us (ok, me, yes, I was weird) watch the California primary returns and yes, I got to hear he’d gotten shot and killed from TV. To say my parents were devastated would be an understatement. More than any other day in the 1960s, June 6, 1968 has been burned into my brain.

These now old Kennedy children are still living with the trauma of their father taken away suddenly and I think we have to respect that. It’s not a matter of “golden children” being deprived of a place. I think that’s kind of horseshit. A few years later, Teddy Kennedy managed to weather Chappaquiddick (which would have killed any political chances today and have hounded him out of the Senate) and then run for president, and some Kennedy clan members have been or are currently in politics.

Personally, I want to know where/how a 77 YO man (Sirhan Sirhan) is going to live, as he’s been in state custody since he was 24 years old. You can’t just put a guy who has no experience in the 21st century out in the street. Hell, the payphones he would have known in 1968 are *gone* and replaced with devices he has no familiarity with.

Funnily enough, there are no British Royalty in political office here either, and it’s very unlikely they ever will be. There’s no outright ban on this happening but it’s not considered a good idea.

On the other hand the Bush family is prepping their next candidate for the Presidency, George P. Bush, ticking off all the boxes they’ll need for him to ascend to his anointed throne behind the Resolute Desk at the right time with the overwhelming mandate of the American people.

The Kennedys had a bit of a setback a decade ago when their hand-picked candidate for the family’s senatorial seat in Massachusetts crashed and burned a while back. This let a non-Kennedy squat in their personal property which must have really rankled. They tried again with another Golden Child, Joe Kennedy who had to give up his his sinecure Congressional seat to challenge Senator Ed Markey, unsuccessfully as it turned out. Their time will come again, though.

re: #272 Nojay UK

or you can look at it this way, if Democracy is a set of choices, the Sirhan’s actions illustrate a set of choices denied…

Instead of Humphrey vs Nixon… (Nixon won)
we have Kennedy vs. Nixon do you want to imagine the choices of a possible Kennedy Presidency?

and say what you will about the cache of noble political families, Kennedy was a stronger Candidate with much broader appeal. I liked Hubert, he was a good man but without the legislative chops and charisma that would catch the eye of a large swath of American voters. Robert would have had the advantage of trying to complete his brother’s legacy.

No guarantee that Kennedy would have won, but without him dead, there would have been a vocal focused counterpoint to Nixon (who then did what he did to ensure his 2nd term). No guarantee Nixon gets us out of Vietnam or even gets a second term without the death of Robert Kennedy.

Its not for me to say if Sirhan gets paroled, to simply wave off his death as no more significant than any other and that a political party could and should survive it… that sure as hell didn’t apply to the Republicans in 1865 either.

That’s why the British people rose up and neutered the bastards, politically that is. We can survive a bad Prime Minister or three, we can’t survive a Bush-style family dynasty with the power of pardon, the power of patronage and a deathgrip on the judicial system. That’s why we took those powers away from the Royal family and restricted them to grip-and-grin sessions and acting as placekeepers and ceremonial puppets, a bit like Disney’s Hall of Presidents (but with more wrinkles). Our problem isn’t the Bush family Dynasty, it’s the Republican party. They’ve been tearing down the country for decades at the local, state and national level.

There are no Kennedys receiving foreign government officials in any official public capacity.

That wasn’t true until recently. Joe Kennedy was a Congressman from, where else, Massachusetts until he tried to grab back the family’s Senate seat in the 2020 election and failed. He’s spending time out doing a political commentator deal and ‘working’ as the figurehead of various good-causes foundations at the moment but he’ll be back in DC eventually. That brass ring won’t grab itself you know.

The Republican Party is essentially the party of the local gentry, which is why it has such disproportionate influence at the local level and why it seems to naturally fall into the pattern of goober aristocracy. In big cities, there are Democratic fatcats who can raise the money and build the networks for high office. This is more difficult elsewhere, while the local country club mob and hereditary business bosses can summon a lot of clout in even very small communities.

The trashy Palin clan from Wasilla, Alaska are a good example. They are reality TV lowlife by national and world standards, but they are actually wealthy and prominent people locally.

There is a useful finality to the concept “If you assassinate an American political figure, you will die in prison.”

he may have been “rehabilitated” or reformed in these 50 years. That’s fine.
no parole for assassination.

We’ll have to keep watching. Ragweed season is in and it’s ruining my ability to talk or do anything other than blow my nose.

The chances that a family will produce two good democratically-elected presidents is about the same as that a royal family will produce two good kings.

John Adams, John Quincy Adams.

Do 2nd cousins count? If so, Teddy Roosevelt and Franklin Delano Roosevelt.

Were either of the Harrisons any good? I can’t remember a thing about them except that Wm Henry got pneumonia at his inauguration and died barely a month in.
