What Media Double Standard?

Politics | Fri, Sep 26, 2008 at 10:19:02 am PDT

Earlier this week the networks threw a major tantrum when the McCain campaign tried to limit their access to Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin’s meetings with foreign officials.

Today, Democratic vice presidential candidate Joe Biden met with Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili and completely excluded the press.

And not a peep from the mainstream media.

MILWAUKEE - Democratic vice presidential candidate Joe Biden met with Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili on Friday but didn’t let reporters in as the pair posed for photographers at the beginning of the session.

The decision to allow only photographers, and no reporters, into the meeting briefly at its start recalled a similar move by Biden’s Republican counterpart, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, earlier this week. Some of the reporters that cover Palin’s vice presidential campaign protested and got the restriction dropped.

UPDATE at 9/26/08 2:42:05 pm:

ABC News says the AP report is wrong, and the press did get access to Biden’s meeting: Political Radar: Biden Meets With Saakashvili, Pledges American Support.

Biden and Saakashvili met privately for about 45 minutes, but, despite an Associated Press report to the contrary, members of Biden’s traveling press pool were in fact permitted in for a five-minute portion beforehand, giving reporters a chance to hear from the two long-time friends.

If it weren't for double standards, the left & msm would have no standards at all.

Apparently it's too hard to have the same standard for everyone.

7 Kosh's Shadow  Fri, Sep 26, 2008 10:22:30am

Maybe the reporters thought he was meeting someone from the state of Georgia.
Or maybe the MSM is so much in the tank for Russia that they don't consider Georgia a country, so Biden wasn't meeting a head of state.

The media is giving Biden a pass - because if he says something screwy, everyone just figures it's Biden being Biden.

The soft bigotry of no expectations.

Meanwhile, Gov. Palin gets raked over the coals if she doesn't give a precise answer to a laundry list of questions. Or somehow is unprepared to be VP, when anyone can point to any number of videos of Obama or Biden making similar or worse gaffes.

Yea, I know. But it's really all part of the same overall problem. And they have been leaking money all over the place for weeks now. We're not just looking at 700 bil, were looking at the bailout over the last month and whatever pops up in the near future.

We're screwed. The bottom line is the federal government is nationalizing the mortgage industry. Plain and simple. They're going to own a sizable chunk of the property in this country.

Don't smell good to me.

Lying about BHO will get you arrested in St. Louis.

St. Louis and Missouri Democrat sheriffs and top prosecutors are planning to go after anyone who makes false statements against Obama during his campaign. This is so one sided I can't even begin to describe how wrong this agenda is.

It's one thing if they want to keep the campaign fair for both sides, but they clearly only want to enforce the issue for the Obama Camp.

KMOV has a video report on the Obama "Truth Squads".

St. Louis City Circuit Attorney Jennifer Joyce and St. Louis County Circuit Attorney Bob McCulloch are threatening to bring libel charges against those who speak out falsely against Barack Obama.

KMOV aired a story last night, that stated that St. Louis County Circuit Attorney Bob McCulloch and St. Louis City Circuit Attorney Jennifer Joyce, both Obama supporters, are threatening to bring criminal libel charges against anyone who levels what turns out to be false criticisms of their chosen candidate for President.

Everyone here knows that you get such better information here than in much of the MSM. There are a few tiny glimpses of light out there, but not much.

But we are just as capable of rumor mongering among ourselves, so the more we can cite facts, the better.

This is precisely why I don't like polls like the ones showing Americans opposing the bailout. We get up to the second updates in here, while our fellow Americans are hours behind us, and if they're not on the Internet and reading conservative blogs they are getting crappy information anyway. It's not that I don't trust the American people to make right decisions, but I'm not really sure most Americans understand yet what a tight spot we are in, and how it can all come tumbling down in a matter of hours. Even if this bailout only gives us breathing room, that's something.

I understand where these Americans who oppose the bailout are coming from, because I felt the same way for a day or so. But I kept reading and came to understand the urgency of the situation.

Hold down control, hit F.

type in what you're looking for, then click next or previous which is to the right of the box.

Yeah, the Find-on-this-page function.
It's faster to scroll down-page when looking for Charles' own posts.

I gave a talk yesterday to a local conservative group about Jews, Christians and Conservatives. I dealt with the horrific treatment of Sarah Palin by liberal and Democratic Jewish groups. One point I made is that the piling on will backfire to some extent, because Jews tend to sympathize with victims of bigotry and abuse, and Sarah Palin is receiving more than her share of both.

It is a big deal. I can't understand how conservatives are so "ok" with this. No big deal, it's will be ok, what else can we do, we have to do this, I'll loose my 401k, ... hell, you're going to be loosing your freedoms, what little there is left of it.

I was kinda just kidding... or maybe just expressing the Washington DC way of thinking... you know... why build one, when you can have two at twice the cost?

But if you are going to take it seriously, there is a big difference. The 700 Billion is not a bailout. It is a purchase. If you think that none of these houses have value, and never will have value, then it is a bad purchase. If you think that the houses will eventually sell, and most will continue to pay the mortgage, then it can turn out to be a good purchase.

The auto industry add on is a bailout. Money given directly to be paid to executives. The money that the companies were going to use for investments (upgrading factories) will actually be given to the executives, and the Government money will go to the upgrade costs... but the way cash is fungible means you might as well just make the checks out to the board of directors.

Home owners who find that their house is worth less than the mortgage need to relax. Interest rates are still low. Continue paying the mortgage. You have to live somewhere. In five years the value will bounce back... You were supposed to think of the house as a long term investment, not a flip.

/serious off

As long as the stuff gets sold back into the private sector in the future, it will work out.

And this is coming out of TAXPAYERS POCKETS. When (if) they do sell it back to the private sector, and make a profit (as I have heard them bragging that's what will happen, profit), what is the vehicle that is in place to see to it that the TAXPAYER gets reimbursed?

Answer please.

Not saying I agree, but it would just be a Credit on our large National Debt. We wouldn't get a check, we'd just owe marginally less.

I actually told a mortgage holder that they were safe in the context that their home wouldn't be taken from them if they were current on their mortgage and WM got sold/failed.

I am/was a shareholder, but I don't think that I ever said that WM was kicking it. I did write once that they shouldn't fail because they had 35 bn in liquid assets, but then my fellow WM customers withdrew 15.3 bn last week (because they were scared of a crash) and crashed the bank. Answer please.

That's simple. All these assets are being bought by the federal government at artificially low prices. When capital gets freed up, and people can borrow money again, the prices go back up. Federal government sells the assets for a tidy profit, keeps it in a fund called the "Return To Taxpayer" fund. Every 6 months or so, write a check to everyone for their part of the profits. Kinda like they do in Alaska, when there is a state surplus.

Chances of it happening?

That may be technically true (the language of the Dodd proposal states that profits remaining after payments shall be paid to the General Fund of the Treasury for "reduction of the public debt").

However, it's the "payments" part of Dodd's proposal that is troubling. Not less than 20% of the profits realized from the sale of any asset are to go to the Housing Trust Fund.

Wow! What a great post. Thank you for putting it all in. I tried to find the article on website of The Journal of International Security Affairs, but it's not up yet. I have book marked the webpage, as there are many great writers & thinks there, Oren chief among them.

Oren's analysis of the positions of McCain & Obama is very detailed and subtle. Especially good is the way Obama's statements have changed with his shifting political calculations. The bottom line is: I don't believe a word Obama says about his support for Israel.

Again, thanks!

I knew you'd like it. Out of all the nonsense I get from both sides on these issues it was very refreshing to find such an informative, and balanced analysis.

Disappointing however was the fact that I don't think anyone here read it.

I did however forward it to all of my Israel interested friends. I thought it was thread worthy...but I don't have a blog.

re: #189 Buck

I thought the auto industry thing was a loan for $25B. Loans have interest and have to be paid back. (The actions of some Democrat supporters not-withstanding.) Similar to what was done for Chrysler. They paid it back early and completely IIRC.

re: #201 Noam Chumpski

Sorry for the loss Noam. Perhaps The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy had it right when they said 'don't panic.' We've got folks who panicked and yanked funds when they didn't have to do so leading to a run on the bank causing a failure. If your funds are in an FDIC insured bank then they are good to whatever the current maximum limits are. Don't run to the bank to withdraw your funds, be concerned, but don't panic.

Quote from FDIC site:

How much insurance coverage does the FDIC provide?
The basic insurance amount is $100,000 per depositor, per insured bank.

The $100,000 amount applies to all depositors of an insured bank except for owners of certain retirement accounts, which are insured up to $250,000 per owner, per insured bank.

Deposits in separate branches of an insured bank are not separately insured. Deposits in one insured bank are insured separately from deposits in another insured bank.

Deposits maintained in different categories of legal ownership at the same bank can be separately insured. Therefore, it is possible to have deposits of more than $100,000 at one insured bank and still be fully insured.

The American people are starting to see through the msm bias as it is, and I think this will be no different.

Also- it occurs to me this causes the incumbent Congress members to not be able to campaign.....

The bias has never been so blatant before, so even the most clueless might begin to get one...and the incumbents not being able to campaign is not something I had considered, but would also be a very good thing...we are at a watershed, Shar, and I do hope and pray, when the time comes, that we as a country choose the best way...

HST = ACORN slush fund

And that absolutely must not be allowed.

I read a detailed debunking of it a day or two ago. Can't remember where, though.

Bottom line was that no gov't agency has ANY record of billing any rape victim/s. The debunking said that it's possible (though there's no evidence of it) that a hospital might have, at some point, billed a victim.

Buy reducing the national deficit. An analysis I read yesterday mentioned a possible profit of $2.2T, yes Trillion, in the long term. Capitalism works. The fed buys the paper at 40 cents on the dollar (example). The value of the paper will rise when the 'crisis' is over and people continue paying their debts, and people buy houses.

The federal agency that is created to oversee this, will start to rate the paper, and bundle it for resale. A system is already in place for a bid/sell pricing to allow for debt to be bought and sold.

IF you feel that housing is never going to recover, then this is a bad deal. However if you feel like I do, that the economy is in fact based on very good principles, and that the great depression is NOT just around the corner...then this could be a great deal. In fact if I had 700 Billion to invest....

Very nice, B0, very nice and very respectful - NOT!

Call your Grandparents, remind them to vote for McCain. Be respectful, unlike the left, but do let them know how important it is. And Sarah Silverman should remember that there is nothing wrong with Jewish people being suspicious of someone named Barack Hussein Obama. Men with names like that have not generally been good to Jewish people.

I thought the auto industry thing was a loan for $25B. Loans have interest and have to be paid back. (The actions of some Democrat supporters not-withstanding.) Similar to what was done for Chrysler. They paid it back early and completely IIRC.

A loan does not have to be tacked on to this. The 700 billion is a purchase. If the auto industry thing was buying stock in GM etc, I would see it as similar.

The auto industry can't afford to borrow the money AND pay the executives the millions they get.

Here is an idea, make EVERYONE in the auto industry take stock options as their bonuses. Base the stock price on the price today! No increase in stock value, no bonus...Everyone including the $50 an hour guy on the line, who is asking for a raise. No raise, stock options...

They really don't have to do that. Obama will win 90% of the St. Louis area vote, if not more, and probably 125% of registered voters when they keep the polls open late in order to get people to the polls in multiple precincts.

Nice work — if you can get fired from it.

That's just what one Alan H. Fishman might have thought when he woke up Friday morning.

Fishman was the new chief executive officer for Washingon Mutual — WaMu — the nation's largest savings and loan, which was taken over Thursday night by federal bank regulators and quickly dumped in a fire sale to JPMorgan Chase for the Wal-Mart-like price of $1.9 billion.

But don't cry for Fishman, who reportedly was sky-high — literally — last night, on a flight from New York to Seattle, when WaMu collapsed. Even though he's only been on the job for less than three weeks, he's bailing out with parachute worth close to $20 million, according to an executive compensation analysis conducted for the New York Times by James F. Reda Associates.

That's right, $20 million for 17 days on the job ... and his company failed.

As for refutation, look up the text of Sarah Palin's speech that she wasn't allowed to give to the Stop Iran Rally -- it's at the New York Sun website. Then ask your friend if that sounds at all like an anti-Semite to him.

While you are at it, ask him if he really thinks that the Iraq War was the work of a cabal of Jewish Neo-Cons who acted, Svengali-like, to force the Bush Administration into doing Israel's business. That narrative seems to be how folks on the Left justify their own anti-Semitism these days.

Always a "minority" group to be at fault for the Dems, has nothing to do with nominating an empty suit known as NObama.

I'm just letting fly about this again - because this scheme to tell your grandparents (Jewish or not) to vote for B0 illustrates what he and his campaign think of grandparents and thus senior citizens generally:
old age has made them too stupid to think for themselves, and they need the 'guidance' of the oh so clued-up youngsters who get their information from the Daily Kos, but not from real life.

It makes me hopping mad, it is such a blatant piece of ageism - and using a comedian to promote this makes it even worse.

All they are sesitive to is the colur of B0's skin. Thus their persistent cry of 'racism' shows clearly that they ahve no idea at all about discrimination. If we don't discriminate against people of different skin colour because this is something they cannot chose - what about age?
Can we choose not to become older?

Not just doble standards, but deep and disgusting insensitivity!

(But - what else do we expect from that empty suit and his followers!)

Acutally I think the MSM is going bankrupt. Witness the plummeting of the NYT stock, newpaper circulation drops to nearly zero, and no one under 65 watching the nightly news on the Big 3. I used to be a newspaper junky and had to read the paper every day. Now I buy it on Sunday only.

There is one of the historical movements going on. People now, for nearly free, can get "news" from millions of sources. The bad side is that you have to wade through crap. However the good side is that you don't have to wonder what you aren't getting told, all you have to do is seek it out. I think that newspapers, the nightly news, and such are in for a major economic crisis.

re: #363 stuiec

It seems you are putting the burden of proof on the wrong side. What was the evidence your acquaintance gave for this rumor?

As for refutation, look up the text of Sarah Palin's speech that she wasn't allowed to give to the Stop Iran Rally -- it's at the New York Sun website. Then ask your friend if that sounds at all like an anti-Semite to him.

While you are at it, ask him if he really thinks that the Iraq War was the work of a cabal of Jewish Neo-Cons who acted, Svengali-like, to force the Bush Administration into doing Israel's business. That narrative seems to be how folks on the Left justify their own anti-Semitism these days.

He saw a video clip, so at that point, a refutation of it is in order. As I said, I think the clip was from the so-called "Jews" for Jesus speaker, but wherever he saw it made him think it was the regular preacher.
I did go over everything I had heard, including the Chabad rabbi.
But in a short time, not in great detail, or we'd get the local moonbats pressuring him to vote for 0, and there are more of them here than any other political group. And I mean Kos-reading, NYT reading, terminal cases of BDS, moonbats.

re: #374 MandyManners

How exactly is that bad or evil? He negotiated with the company for the severance package, and it's not like he expected the feds to shutter the bank last night and sell it at wholesale to JPMorganChase?

Besides, the money spend on his compensation was a fraction of the tens of billions in bad debt, and he had already taken the step of putting out the fiscals on teh company's 3Q weeks ahead of time to try and set up a sale of the company and engage in orderly business.

I don't think he's a bad guy in all this, though the media certainly will try to do that (and from the looks of it, the pitchforks are out for him here as well).

re: #326 Buck

A loan does not have to be tacked on to this. The 700 billion is a purchase. If the auto industry thing was buying stock in GM etc, I would see it as similar.

The auto industry can't afford to borrow the money AND pay the executives the millions they get.

Here is an idea, make EVERYONE in the auto industry take stock options as their bonuses. Base the stock price on the price today! No increase in stock value, no bonus...Everyone including the $50 an hour guy on the line, who is asking for a raise. No raise, stock options...

It should be handled separately, yes. I feel the same about all unrelated legislation.

If companies do not pay their execs what they promised, they are in breach of contract. What many seem to be missing is that these executives were hired because the company thought they could guide them to greater profits, and the companies make the pay and benefits really, really attractive to get what they consider to be the All-Stars of the executive world. Sometimes you get Brett Favre, sometimes you get Ryan Leaf, but you are still obligated to pay what you promised.

Do you think the UAW would sit still for a pay freeze? You think people are screaming socialism about the bail-out, just imagine the howls at the government coming in and dictating wages and benefits for a corporation. A union shutdown of a company can cost hundreds of million of dollars. Their nuts are in the vice and the unions are turning the handle.

re: #384 Big Steve

I think something has happened to the integrity of newspapers, television "news" and so on....and I suspect it may have had to do with the Internet -- the established media figured it was in competition with the Internet, and in order to make the staid, objective (what some called 'boring') programs (newspaper articles) more "lively" and "entertaining" -- they chose to sensationalize their broadcasts (hence, you get a lot of screaming loud mouths -- little thought, lots of noise)...ditto for the print media...Now when I open up a newspaper, it sounds like bloggers (minus the profanity). There are around a half dozen (maybe less) columnists whom I'd actually miss if I stopped my newspaper subscription (that's National Post)...(I've already canceled one local paper -- and, frankly, I don't miss the paper one iota -- the local paper was a rag, offered nothing I couldn't get over the Internet.) Anyway, rather than offering something you couldn't find on the Internet -- that is, quality programs, thoughtful, insightful writing -- the MSM took the easy way out, and just emulated the Internet (got "convergence" all right -- a race to the bottom) ...And if the MSM go bankrupt, I won't miss them...

However, let's be clear - he made no deal. WAMU was bought out from under him last night (pretty much in after market trading.) JP wasn't even one of the banks he was trying to sell to.

I can call him whatever I want. He failed at his position and did not achieve the goals that were asked of him. Now he will take monies that he knows he probably shouldn't take. It's an asshole move if he chooses to do it. Contract or not. Sometimes you gotta look yourself in the eye and ask yourself what's the right thing to do. He could even come out and say I'll take 'half' or that he would inject the cash into a shareholder fund. There are other options.

I'm a free-market guy, but personally, I'd feel like an asshole walking out the door knowing the cash was being wired into my account. It's not as if he doesn't have other terrific job offers.

Otherwise, it's probably going to pass anyway, but in the form of a left-wing Christmas tree that risks making it unworkable so we'll get the worst of both worlds—a huge bailout scheme and a financial meltdown.

re: #360 Hard Right

Some of these "male" Conservatives saying such things seem to have a higher standard for Sarah. Since she doesn't meet their unreachable goal, they find her lacking.

For a more enlightened view, see this Forbes column.

the truth - by Jim DeMint:

What happened over the years is Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac together processed over 5 trillion dollars worth of loans and sold them as securities all over the world. This easy credit inflated the cost of homes and created over-building and an over-supply of homes until we finally hit a wall. The values of people's homes started to go down, which means the mortgages were over-priced. Now these banks want to unload these securities in order to have money to loan.... but they can't sell them for what they got them for.

The biggest creditor is China and that's a big part of this equation that's not being talked about. If America was not in such deep debt, we could deal with this problem much more effectively -- but China has essentially told the U.S. that we make good on all the debt that they're holding, which is nearly a trillion dollars, or they're going to stop lending us money. To show that they're serious, they've already stopped lending us money and if we can't borrow money every day, literally hundreds of billions of dollars, we default on the loans that are coming due.

So, this is a house of cards that the government has created and my biggest frustration with this whole mess is that it is being blamed on free enterprise, capitalism, and corporate greed -- when in fact, this is a good example of what happens when the government gets involved in the private sector. It created a huge mess.

Jesucristo, how blatant can you get?
No wonder more people now think the MSMs are in the tank for Obama.

Of course it's always been true, but now it's a lot more obvious...

These tanks had been purchased by Kenya.

Kenya!

Glenn Beck interviewed Saakashvili on this television show last night. Beck was trying to get Saakashvili to say something nice about Sarah Palin, who he had met with earlier in the day. Saakashvili demured, saying Joe Biden is his good friend and he didn't want to say more.

Why does my paranoid inner-self assume that during that closed meeting today, Saakashvili was feeding Biden opposition research (details from his talk with Palin) to help his good friend in the Oct. 2nd debate?

471 Ledger1  Fri, Sep 26, 2008 1:39:19pm

Yep, Mike Huckabee is getting his own show on Fox News. They're promoting it with a guitar image, and using words like "rocking."

Another reason to turn off the TV. –Charles

I agree.

The amount of propaganda and liberal biases outweighs any good shows on TV. Watching TV is like looking a stream of sewage - it stinks.

Wasting time watching TV is not worth it. TV is depressing and insulting to people who have an IQ over 105.

I've been phoning and faxing for two days now and I'm getting a twitch in my left eye. I'm not a lofty scholar, but hopefully they got my point.
Submitted for your amusement is what I sent...

Dear Congress member,

The bailout bill should protect every American, whether they be baker, banker, beggar-man or thief; but if that American is a banker that's baking the books, that thief should be turned into a beggar-man and sent to jail.

IF the bailout is really necessary, please make sure it only covers secured assets. Credit card, school loans and used car debts should not be rolled into the laps of hard working Americans. I am appalled that someone had the audacity to include them. Please make all amendment and their sponsors very public as it is an informed electorate that keeps this country great.

Most sincerely,

re: #70 ploome hineni

the double standard is so obvious, it is beginning to scare me

what kind of country has this become?

This double standard gives the Democrat side an incalculable advantage ("Priceless" to quote a certain credit card ad) and sets the tone for whatever they decide is, or is not, important. It disgusts me and I think it is a far greater threat to our form of government than any of the chicken-little "Bush destroyed the Constitution" crap coming out of the liberal side.

When you overtly manipulate what the public does and does not hear - you are performing a disservice to your profession and the country.

Of course that doesn't matter to them because they're anointed and the rules are whatever the frick they decide them to be.....

Sorry for the rant......

"If Obama loses, I'm blaming the Jews."
Guess who?

Anyone want to see Ms. Silverman's best movie, just watch her face get smashed in by Ryan Philippe in the first 10 minuets of "The way of the gun"... Laughter follows.

McCain is actually calling him a liar. Obama is on the defensive. This is good.

As far as I can tell Huckabee's biggest crime is having a western Christian world view. I like the guy. What else ya got?
