Tech Note: Mysterious Bug Fixed?

Science | Mon, Sep 29, 2008 at 10:27:56 am PDT

If you’ve been having any of the following problems at LGF:

* Login from the main page doesn’t work, but clicking through to an article page and logging in does.

* The “top rated links” area just spins and spins and doesn’t open, until you click through to another LGF page.

* The RSS feeds won’t display.

* Other seemingly Javascript/Ajax-related issues.

... we’ve finally managed to duplicate the symptoms, diagnose the problem, and eradicate the bug.

The cause: accessing our front page with a URL including the “www.” prefix. Yes, really, that’s all it was. Most browsers will see “www.littlegreenfootballs.com” as a different domain than “littlegreenfootballs.com,” and Javascript’s same-domain security features kick in, refusing to allow access to scripts with URLs that don’t include the “www.”

The solution was found on this page; a method of forcing all page requests to remove the “www.” prefix, by using mod_rewrite.

This should eliminate a constant source of annoyance for visitors, and a constant source of problem complaints for Stinky Beaumont.

The only "problem" I've noted is the length of time LGF takes to load or reload having to wait for certain ads to load. No criticism, just an observation.
The quality and level of detail on this blog is worth the delay.

Down Goes Frazier.... Down Goes Frazier...

The House rejects the bailout bill.

The preliminary vote was 185-197.

Even as the electronic roll call began, Democratic and Republican leaders were uncertain about having enough votes to pass the politically unpopular plan. It's the most sweeping government intervention in markets since the Great Depression.

The bailout puts in place an unprecedented federal program to buy up rotten assets from cash-starved firms. The goal is to free up choked credit that was threatening to cause broader market turmoil.

71 NY Nana  Mon, Sep 29, 2008 10:58:05am

Bulletin: House appears to reject massive bailout plan

The House of Representatives seemingly rejected a $700 billion bailout today following extended debate where many members, including some who brokered the deal with it, was highly unpopular.

The preliminary vote was 185-197. Members had a limited amount of time to change their votes. Following the deadline, the margin was growing for those opposed to the measure.

"Many of us feel that the national interest requires us to do something which is, in many ways, unpopular," said Rep. Barney Frank, the Financial Services Committee chairman, before the vote. "It is hard to get political credit for avoiding something that has not yet happened."

The bill was the product of marathon bargaining over the weekend among various House and Senate representatives.

President Bush urged the bill's passage, saying in a White House appearance Monday morning that "every member of Congress and every American should keep in mind that a vote for this bill is a vote to prevent economic damage to you and your community."

"With this strong and decisive legislation," he said, "we will help restart the flow of credit so American families can meet their daily needs and American businesses can make purchases, ship goods and meet their payrolls."

As debate opened, Frank, D-Mass., called the measure "a tough vote," but a necessary one to stave off a financial meltdown. It lets the government buy sour assets — mostly mortgage-backed securities — from struggling financial institutions in a bid to clear out clogged avenues of credit for businesses and individuals alike.

At the White House, spokesman Tony Fratto confirmed vigorous efforts to get the bill through.

"We're going to keep working with them right up until the vote," he said.

Fratto also said that Bush, Vice President Dick Cheney, Treasury Secretary Paulson, White House chief of staff Josh Bolten and other top officials were contacting House members in an effort to rally support, and that the president himself had call list of "a couple dozen members."

Fratto said Bush was telling aides some of those he'd talked to were committed to voting for the bill while "others remained skeptical."

With their dire warnings of impending economic doom and their sweeping request for unprecedented sums of money and authority to bail out cash-starved financial firms, Bush and his economic chiefs have focused the attention of the world and the markets on Congress, said Republican Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin. Without the bill, Ryan added, "the worst is yet to come."

"We're in this moment, and if we fail to do the right thing, Heaven help us." he said.

As Democratic and Republican leaders hunted for votes, leaning on lawmakers to take a political hit for the good of the country, Ryan said, "We're all worried about losing our jobs. ... Most of us say, 'I want this thing to pass, but I want you to vote for it — not me.' "

See rest...

re: #53 joncelli

That's not true - not when you have a breakout like this:

Democrats Yeas 140 Nays 94

Republicans Yeas 65 Nays 133

If the Democrats supported the package and voted by party line, they would have had enough votes. 234 votes would have been sufficient. Pelosi couldn't guarantee the votes, and she needed the GOP to cover. When the GOP wouldn't give her that kind of coverage, those Democrats who realized this was a bad bill, jumped ship. It exposes Pelosi's failure to lead again.

This will work better in your Apache config because:

A) It will tell google and all other indexers that 'www.littlegreenfootballs.com' pages are not to be used for indexing, use the 'littlegreenfootballs.com' pages.

B) It has less compute overhead than a mod_rewrite.

The mod_rewrite code is doing a 301 redirect, so it takes care of the search engine thing. But you're right - it would be less overhead to put it in httpd.conf.

Thanks for swatting this bug. Now I can store all the hoops I was jumping through to use the log in. I fully realize this only happens when you frequent a site that is controlled by an exceptional individual who constantly tries to provide the very best. I am sure I am not alone in saying; "We appreciate the work you do here every day"!

Yes, I saw the mod rewrite was doing the 301. Just suggesting an alternative to help them poor hamsters out. :)

I have some sort of a bug or problem at my other ISP. For about the past week I’ve been unable to access LGF and now get the below error message on all 3 of my computers at that location. (All three computers worked fine with LGF in the past.)

Forbidden
You don't have permission to access /weblog/ on this server.

Additionally, a 403 Forbidden error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

Apache/1.3.41 Server at littlegreenfootballs.com Port 80

(This has nothing to do with the "www bug". Although, up until about a week ago all worked fine at the other location.)

Thanks much for any thoughts on how to fix this!

Back again. For whatever reason I am back at the other ISP location, it IS working again. Perhaps, it was a problem locally. Anyway, I'm good to go at both spots now.
