Tech Note: Do the Tighten Up

Science | Sun, Oct 12, 2008 at 5:48:56 pm PDT

In the latest tech note that will inevitably become an open thread, still more outdated code has been trimmed, modernized, and tightened up in the LGF Blog Engine templates. The comment entry form that registered users see is now table-free, using floated elements to create a table-like look for the form inputs, with labels right aligned and fields left aligned on a central point.

There are two areas left that still use tables: 1) the comment meta line with username, icon, etc. (we could do it with lists or DIVs, but CSS vertical alignment within block level elements stinks and it ends up looking lopsided and breaking as soon as the text size is increased), and 2) the Statistics drop-down menu in the left sidebar (because a table is appropriate for that kind of tabular data).

That vertical alignment thing is a sore subject with many web designers; it’s currently the top-rated item on Webmonkey’s CSS Wishlist.

So tighten up or feel Stinky's cudgel!

Steyn:

If Obama is elected in November, at G7 meetings, for the first time since time they began, America will have a more left-wing leader than any other member of the group - Canada, Germany, France, Italy, Japan, and Britain (and that's before Gordon Brown loses to David Cameron). Right-of-center government throughout the western world - except Washington.

Read that again. What sort of "salvaging" of America's reputation does Obama hope to accomplish with right-of-center European state officials? Yes, he and Zapatero can get drunk together and make out, but the others? He'll get a cold shoulder, like Merkel's. Way to go, Barry! Way to reduce America's image abroad!

There's a lot of fancy language in that CSS Wishlist, but what I want to see is an element property refer-back, sort of like inheritance. If I have a sidebar containing fixed content that is floated on the left, within a wrapper (div) container that expands (height="auto"), and I want the sidebar to expand in height along with the wrapper, I should very simply be able to set the height for the sidebar to reference the height of the wrapper (body) container. Very simply, the page expands to a height of 1024 pixels, then the sidebar does as well. There are currently work-arounds for this, but they are ridiculously bulky and nebulous, at best. My addition to the wishlist, unless it's already there, and I didn't recognize it.

re: #23 ploome hineni

What, that he should be asked whether he, as a Christian, has a problem with this?

About 50 parishioners were locked into the Assemblies of God church before it was set ablaze. They were mostly women and children. Those who tried to flee were hacked to death by machete-wielding members of a mob numbering 2,000.

The mob were Muslim supporters of Raila Odinga, Obama's cousin, for whom Obama campaigned heavily. Odinga signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Muslims which consented to, among other things, the establishment of sharia law.

Does Obama have any problem with this?

35 Tigger2005  Sun, Oct 12, 2008 6:12:29pm

I did more walking for McCain/Palin today. Had an Obama supporter take the poll, it went fine (it's just 5 questions) & thanked him for his time. Another Obama supporter said "Bye bye" and let the screen door close in my face when I said I was taking a pole for the Missouri Republican Campaign committee. Lots of people weren't home, but most of the people I polled, again, were supporting McCain/Palin. And maybe 2 or 3 of the houses where nobody was home had stuff that would make you think "Republican," like flags and patriotic bunting and "God bless America" signs on the doors. The last guy I talked to (actually him and his son) were cool, the son was probably in his 30's and the dad in his late 50's, we talked for maybe an hour ... they were both VERY informed, especially the dad, and very opinionated. ACORN, Soros, Rezko, Wright, Ayers, etc. etc. etc., he knew all about it.

By the way, my stepmom told me that her mother, who lives in suburban St. Louis, had her McCain/Palin sign stolen from her yard, and other people in the area have had their signs BURNED. I wonder when Obama intends to condemn this blatant disrespect for personal property?

Ace is pissed!

You Know...

Some Republicans are, alas, the exact same sort of unsophisticated angry morons who shout things like "Terrorist" about Obama when McCain is speaking, thus putting him on the extreme defensive, or having temper tantrums on blogs when the proprietor requests they refrain from exposing him to any lawsuits.

They substantially vindicate every stereotype the left and MSM has about us, and make the rest of us not only look bad, but make us squeamish from even being political associates. And they lose us precious votes.

And yet these screamers and tantrum-throwers really think they're the ones helping the team. These malformed, brain-damaged shut-in angry monsters think they've got the right message to carry to the non-deformed, non-retarded demographics.

Wanna know why we're losing? Wanna know why McCain had to make a statement about Obama not being dangerous and being a good and decent man?

Because you geniuses embarrassed him with your stupidity and compelled him to say that.

1% of LGF's commenters embarrassed him greatly and got him widely called a "hate site." Because these fucking imbeciles just thought their scary brilliant pathologies were just too important to not be shared publicly.

99% of readers and commenters are great. It's the 1% of brain-damaged, ignorant mutants that always causes all the embarrassment. On blogs. And at campaign rallies.

And once again: They think they're the ones who have the important messaging which will win over America.

For God's sakes, you embarrass your own would-be political allies. How can you delude yourselves?

At some point, if you really had something valuable to contribute, don't you think someone would have said "Great point, man!" by now?

Can you begin to consider the possibility that you are consistently ignored, and have to resort to shouting "Terrorist" or throwing temper-tantrums on blogs, is because you're a mutant idiot that non-mutants non-idiots just don't have time for? And perhaps you'd best go back to just lurking?

Consider: Earlier today I, a fairly prominent blogger, was pushing the Obama gal-pal story, helping to get it out there.

Now I have deleted it, and will not be posting it again. I'm done with the story.

All because a nasty pathetic wretch of a "man" thought that he would show me by repeatedly spamming a name I'd asked people not to.

Just like with McCain, ready to attack Obama until retards started shouting out "Muslim" and "terrorist' and saying Obama was an "Arab."

So, yellers/mutants:

How do you plan on helping the cause tomorrow? By further so embarrassing leaders and writers into stopping all attacks on Obama?

Brilliant.

You tell 'em, Ace!

So much for Bill O'Reilly's fantasy about price fixing.

Gasoline price marks biggest drop ever: survey

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The average price of a gallon of gasoline in the United States recorded its largest drop ever as consumer demand continued to wane and oil prices slid, a prominent industry analyst said on Sunday.

The national average price for self-serve, regular unleaded gas fell 35.03 cents to $3.3079 a gallon on October 10 from $3.6582 two weeks earlier, according to the nationwide Lundberg Survey.

It was the lowest national average price since March 21, 2008. Since peaking at $4.1124 on July 11, the average cost of a gallon of gas has receded by 80.45 cents. Diesel fuel fell 21 cents to $3.95 a gallon, the first time since March that it has been below $4.00 a gallon.

"Plummeting oil prices and caving gasoline demand have combined to bring the biggest retail gasoline price cut in the history of the market," Trilby Lundberg, who compiles the survey, said in an interview. "We've been doing this 58 years. This is truly the biggest price drop."

I think oil will go a lot lower in the next 6 months.

And that will absolutely destroy Chavez and Dinnerjacket.

hey {NoSub},
i missed the parade today. i couldn't get away. but my friend said you were there. kudos for your hard work and commitment. were there any viewers lined up to watch parade? my friend said some of the jihadis got aggressive.

There was nearly no one stopping to watch the parade. It went down Madison Avenue for 20 blocks and the only others there were the protesters and the tourists that got caught up in the spectacle of it all. A ghost of a parade, really. Was less than half the size of last years. I saw your friend. She's a very cool lady!

And yes, there was some aggressiveness. The cops did an amazing job.

I just spoke to an old friend in Canada ....business man, fifty-ish, successful. A sailor who has seen much of the world. As conversations are wont to do with me - especially lately - the topic turned to politics. The Middle East. Israel. The Canadian Human Rights Commission. Obama and the upcoming election.

"Obama", he says, "will be the best thing that has ever happened to America; maybe the world will begin to look kindly upon your country once again."

Without boring all of you with the ensuing fireworks, I will tell you that he has never heard of Ezra Levant, thinks the CHRC is the same thing as the ACLU and that it serves a noble purpose, that he laughed out loud when I used the words "caliphate" and "sharia law" and came right out and called bullshit on England now recognizing the rulings of sharia courts. He respectfully declined my suggestion to read a Melanie Philips column or two. He has never heard of Acorn, Rezko, Ayers or of any -ANY - of the controversy surrounding Obama. He is barely aware that the man even has an opponent. When I asked him where he got his news, he said that CNN was the only thing he watched.

After several long silences, he asked: "Umm .... is there anything else in your life, or has this fanaticism obscured everything else?"

Somehow I think he regrets the call.

Wells Fargo will be buying out Wachovia after all.

Wells Fargo wins Fed approval on Wachovia bid

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Federal Reserve on Sunday gave its stamp of approval to the takeover of Wachovia Corp by Wells Fargo & Co of San Francisco, which had battled New York-based Citigroup for ownership of the wounded bank.

In an unusual Sunday afternoon announcement that appeared timed to precede the opening of shaky global financial markets, the Fed said it already had been in touch with the U.S. Department of Justice and banking regulators about the deal.

"Those agencies have indicated that they have no objection to the approval of the proposal," the Fed assured.

The fight between Wells Fargo and Citigroup over Wachovia, which is based in Charlotte, North Carolina, was acrimonious right up to the point when Citigroup finally backed out last Thursday.

So the deal is done. That takes care of one more shaky part of the mechanism.

Hmmm.. whenever I try to do "reply" or "quote" it just sends me back to the main page. I pushed the '!' button on someone, hope thats not a bad thing.

It sounds like you're clicking the 'reply/quote' button before the page has finished loading. If you're using Internet Explorer, the Javascript parser is dog slow. It chugs away in the background long after the browser seems to indicate the page is all loaded. If you click one of those buttons before the page is really all loaded and set up, that's what happens.

Install Firefox. Take the plunge. You'll never look back.

RPT-GLOBAL MARKETS-Stocks rebound in Asia on banks' rescue hopes

HONG KONG, Oct 13 (Reuters) - Australian and South Korean shares bounced on Monday after policymakers around the world took increasingly bold steps to staunch the bleeding in financial markets, including guarantees on bank desposits and directly injecting capital into banks.

The euro climbed while U.S. stock futures .SPc1 were up 4 percent, pointing to a sharply higher open on Wall Street, after the U.S. government said it would take stakes in banks and European leaders hatched a plan that included buying debt that banks issue, both aimed at freeing the flow of precious credit.

Ace is pissed!

You tell 'em, Ace!

Yes, 1% of McCain's supporters are assholes. When you're running a campaign involving hundreds of thousands of people all over the country and drawing tens of thousands to rallies, how are you supposed to keep every asshole away or quiet? And how do we know some of these people aren't Mobys? I wouldn't put that past Obama supporters.

We are being held to an insanely high standard by the media and by people who have no standards whatsoever. The Obama campaign gave money to ACORN and has not denounced its efforts at committing voter fraud. Members of the Obama campaign are involved in efforts to intimidate and chill freedom of speech. The media and the Obama campaign worked hand in hand to smear Sarah Palin and her family. Ugliness and nastiness and sheer nuttiness abound in the Obama campaign--it's their modus operandi--but the media reports none of it, while a few idiot McCain supporters get splashed all over the news.

I'm sorry, Ace, I think you're misdirecting your anger. It should be directed at the media for refusing to cover this campaign fairly, and at Obama for conducting an ugly, corrupt, despicable campaign.

"..they have to vote for him because he is black..."

I'm getting versions of that too. "It would be nice to elect a black guy..." my doctor(!?) said. Another popular notion is that government just won't "change" unless the Democrats are allowed "their turn." There is also a variant of this derangement among far-lefties whereby some people see defeating any Republican candidate as a victory against Bush, who has beaten them so many times.
People seem to contemplate this campaign emotionally more than I have noticed in the past.

I don't think sharethis.com is actually the problem - it was just the last thing the browser was loading before the real issue.

Some of the advertisement servers were acting a bit sluggish earlier, and I think that's what caused what you saw.

Safari's Network Timeline is great for diagnosing these kinds of problems.

FYI - Just blew away my cache and cookies, closed the browser and tried again. Same hang point from what I observe on the screen, but the hang was for about 15 seconds and then got through. Then I saw your note, which tells me I didn't need to try that.

BTW - If I had used the terms "blew my cache and cookies" in conversation 20 years ago, people would have assumed I was dating girl scouts. Change!

It is like the Republicans are expected to act like responsible parents and if they make the slightest mistake or don't act with complete selflessness they are called bad.

But when the Democrats act like spoiled rotten selfish children they are told they are right.

As much as I hate the socialist aspects of these rescue efforts, I think it's something that has to be done. Look what happened the last time there was a global economic collapse. We have to think long term now. The socialists have bided their time and slowly wormed their way into the heart of our universities, our government, and our financial system. You have to give them credit, they don't give up. Now it's our turn. Will we throw in the towel or will we continue to fight?

115 3 wood  Sun, Oct 12, 2008 6:44:25pm

Germany is getting into the bail out business too:

Germany to use up to $135 billion for banks: report

SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- Germany's government will set up a fund to provide as much as 100 billion euros ($135 billion) of equity capital to help the nation's banks through the economic turmoil, Reuters reported Sunday, citing the daily Handelsblatt.
The Wall Street Journal had reported Saturday that Germany was preparing a plan to bail out its financial sector -- not long after saying its banks didn't need such support.
Handelsblatt, citing sources close to the talks on the matter, said that the $137 billion fund was part of a bigger package, valued at as much as 400 billion euros. That package also will include interbank guarantees or direct loans, the German paper said.
The move mirrors similar action around the world by the U.K., France, Australia and others.

Should be an interesting week on Wall Street.

It's this or total wipe out.

In the long run I think this is healthy cause it's flushing some real bad practices out of the system (hopefully). But we are in for a tough go nover the less.

We lost something like 4 trillion in market value wealth over the last several weeks.

re: #56 Egfrow

CNBC is doing a bunch of Euro weenie interviews about how they are abandoning America investments and going to UAE for a more secure investment. They are asking that the US stop the slide in the markets by closing them down like they are about to do. Boy, It makes me feel bad that The Europeans don't like us anymore. I freaking broken hearten over it all. I really am. Can someone console me?

Well, I don't know about that, but I want to point out to some well-respected posters - who thought that banning short-selling was the tonic for all that ailed us - that the average financial stock (the ones that the ban applied to) has fallen 31% since the ban on short-selling was enacted.

The problem isn't the shorts; it's the unbridled irresponsibility that has infected our culture. Sorry if this sounds cruel, but prosperity isn't created by irresponsible slobs sucking off the government; it's created by productive citizens working hard, living responsibly, saving, creating and investing wisely.

Your home isn't a piggy bank. If it has doubled in value in the last five years, chances are that it's less - not more - likely that it will double in value in the next five years.

When you invest in the "stock market," your best bet is to invest in companies that have strong balance sheets, and that have great prospects for earning large amounts of money in the future (the past has already been priced into the stock). If you chase a dot com or biotech or whatever else is currently fashionable, chances are you will end up losing your money.

Above all else, look at your paycheck. How much do you make? If you're spending more than that, you're on the road to financial ruin. If you're spending as much as that, you're on the road to eventual ruin. For G-d's sake, cut back on all the unnecessary shit, and start saving!

re: #109 Charles

I've seen this problem with allot of different sites and feel it's a real world issue that can effect the perception of a site's performance. I wonder if it's possible to write a script object that reads the page code that loads these external ad sites and tries to do a timed performance test to see if hangs up. If it detects sluggish load from that resource the script can remove it temporarily from the site. I think this might be possible to do.
