WBEZ Hiding Obama Recordings?

Politics | Wed, Oct 29, 2008 at 8:53:00 am PDT

WBEZ Chicago Public Radio has apparently pulled offline all of their audio recordings, including the ones with Barack Obama talking about “redistribution of wealth” and comparing America to Nazi Germany.

I emailed the station yesterday morning to ask if they had removed the audio, or if they were having technical problems, and received no reply.

Are they deliberately hiding these recordings? It certainly looks that way. You can contact WBEZ and ask them yourself. Maybe you’ll have better luck getting an answer from them.

UPDATE at 10/29/08 9:15:20 am:

A reader emails to let me know that WBEZ has made their audio recordings of Barack Obama available at their blog; no word on why all of the RealAudio files elsewhere on the site are offline: Chicago Public Radio Blog » Barack Obama’s Radio Days.

You're next, WBEZ.

Obama's already the greatest president in American history.

Just ask anyone who works in the LameStream media.

Don't say I didn't warn you.

5 Perplexed  Wed, Oct 29, 2008 8:57:33am

Suspect they might be attempting a DMCA defense. Pretty damned shabby for an outfit that feeds in the public trough.

6 x-wing  Wed, Oct 29, 2008 8:57:48am

They're doing something similar in Alabama, with statements on Dem . Parker Griffith saying some bad things about America.

Free media my ass.

POS? Yes, POS!

8 joncelli  Wed, Oct 29, 2008 8:58:09am

Maybe a blogger archived the audio somewhere?

9 Ojoe  Wed, Oct 29, 2008 8:58:40am

How can we the people make the right decision for our country if important information is withheld from us?

WBEZ Quislings.

Just a little insurance for continued public funding come January 20.

Lemme guess, Barry's Boys made WBEZ an offer they couldn't refuse?

13 Junior  Wed, Oct 29, 2008 9:00:04am

Oh these HAVE to be archived somewhere by someone!

14 Oh no...Sand People!  Wed, Oct 29, 2008 9:01:46am

It's one thing when a totalitarian state destroys your 'freedom of speech' and instills the media to be 'state sanctioned speech'.
Another thing entirely when the media willfully chooses to be 'state sanctioned' all on their own.

Sell outs.

The more WBEZ, the LAT, and everyone else covers up, the more people recognize that there's something very, very bad in those recordings. Usually I'd say the truth can't be nearly as bad as the rumors, but in this case, all bets are off.

Circling the wagons for Obama. They receive our tax dollars, though the CPB, right?

17 snopercod  Wed, Oct 29, 2008 9:03:20am

Adolph Hitler had to buy his own newspaper to spread national-socialist propaganda. American papers do it for free!

Maybe they got a letter threatening action from the FCC under the Obama Reich?

21 JammieWearingFool  Wed, Oct 29, 2008 9:05:58am

How funny would it be if when the Obama Half Hour Comedy Hour came on tonight the festivities were interrupted by the Khalidi video followed by some choice archived audio exposing Obama for the fake, phony, two-bit fraud he is.

No amount of fraudulent credit card donations could erase that damage.

Indeed, the LA Slimes and WBEZ are actually causing more damage to Obama by their actions than I think could possibly result from their releasing the tapes.

23 Sharmuta  Wed, Oct 29, 2008 9:07:22am

I wonder if they did that on their own or if they had a "friendly" nudge.

I am in 100% agreement with you. Something truly campaign ending must be on the LAT tape. And I suspect that it has already been destroyed along with any copies that can be found.

I am sure the WBEZ tapes are neing purged of anything related to Obama before they are sanitized and put back online.

Like I said a few days ago, the MSM is now engaged in advance damage control.

I keep saying this over and over. There is NO DAMAGED DONE. The left and it's supporters DON'T GIVE A DAMN.

Simple as that. So, it bothers us. So, we see it for what it is. So? So what.

None of this matters to anyone outside the choir if the rest of the world won't hear about it, or do hear about it and dismiss it.

29 Ringo the Gringo  Wed, Oct 29, 2008 9:15:08am

At this rate there soon will be no trace that this man, Barack Obama, ever existed...aside from his own books about himself that is.

30 redstateredneck  Wed, Oct 29, 2008 9:15:29am

No wonder Obama want everybody to vote early. If any of this stuff comes out in the open and peoples eyes are opened it's curtains for him.

31 Charles  Wed, Oct 29, 2008 9:16:38am

See the update above! They have a blog, and the Obama recordings are posted there:

[Link: apps.wbez.org...]

However, all of the RealAudio files do appear to be offline, and there are recordings featuring, among others, Rashid Khalidi and Bill Ayers.

32 greggriffith  Wed, Oct 29, 2008 9:17:40am

I'm reasonably sure a simple 'wget' command would have copied all those files to one of our servers with a minimum of effort. Why are we so lame?

33 phoenixgirl  Wed, Oct 29, 2008 9:18:04am

at what point do his supporters say......whoa! there is way too much crap associated with this creep? knock, knock, hello in there! are you dems really willing to attach yourself to this nut? are you really that crazy? are you really that corrupt?

Not suprising. 91.5 FM (WBEZ) is the local moonbat radio here around Chicagoland. Most of us who are the slightest bit conservative tend to tune into AM radio. There should be quite a treasure trove of goodies at the WBEZ website.

35 Ward Cleaver  Wed, Oct 29, 2008 9:20:09am

I'll bet their servers are seeing loads they've never seen before.

36 monkey den  Wed, Oct 29, 2008 9:21:14am

I wonder if they, being public radio, have any obligation to keep them accessible for a period of time. I'm sure there would be some "statute of limitations" on an obligation of this sort but it's plausible.

37 realwest  Wed, Oct 29, 2008 9:22:09am

re: #28 Walter L. Newton
Walter - IIRC, YOU had a conversation with someone who said they don't care about all the nasty but true stories about Obama. Or perhaps it was some other LGFer who said that.
THAT however, doesn't mean that the people including many Democrats don't care.
We are all making assumptions here; I think the reason the LA Times isn't releasing the videotape is not necessarily what Obama SAID, but because it shows Obama and Ayers and probably Dohrn socializing together - and you'd be amazed (I know I was) at how many people care that Obama socializes with Ayers/Dohrn. Even folks too young to remember the Weather Underground and the murders committed by them, care about this - IF ONLY BECAUSE AYERS HAS SAID HE'S ONLY SORRY THEY DIDN'T DO MORE BOMBINGS. Yes, the general public DOES CARE about this.

The MP3 files and YouTube stuff can be easily captured, while the .ram files are harder to get.

I'm reasonably sure a simple 'wget' ...

Are you able to use a wildcard (*.rm) or regex with wget? I have always known the file name, and used the command as such.

yep, with all this stuff seeping out.....how many voters have cast their votes only to finally realize that this guy has some serious issues? i'd like to see a "recind my vote" protest..... or a " re-do" voting line.....imho fundamental fairness dictates it.

43 realwest  Wed, Oct 29, 2008 9:27:45am

I'm sorry all y'all - but the fact is that the general public does care, I think, as I said in #37 above, about Ayers, the UNREPENETENT BOMBER and the economy - spread the wealth- hit your 401k's - increase tax burdens on small businesses enormously - not just by raising taxes, but by requiring that small business provide health insurance to all of their employees or face heavy fines for not doing so.
This is the stuff that matters to the American Public and every time we or McCain get off those topics, we are simply wasting time and effort.

re: #22 realwest

I don't. The LA Fishwrap stonewall and the radio archives no longer being available must have information/quotes on them that makes these items two torpedoes amidship the SS Obama. No other rational explaination for such nefarious subterfuge.

45 pittrader1988  Wed, Oct 29, 2008 9:29:41am

This does not surprise me. The media is in the tank for Obama. The WBEX station is a govt run public radio station. They lean to the far left, and I have no idea why we fund them.

Chicago is so shut down about speaking about Obama. Their are threats from MSM reporters if you peep, and don't forget-this is a town where the MOB has a seat at the table with the mayor. Not just this mayor but most mayors going back to Anton Cermak.

Obama is the second coming of Richard Nixon. His foreign policy is the second coming of Jimmy Carter. His domestic policy is the rebirth of FDR.

I cannot think of a worse candidate, at a worse time in American history.

My shout into the abyss:

As your station is partially funded by federal tax money- MY money - what
gives you the right to remove from public consideration the audio archives that until a few days ago were freely available from your web site?

I, and millions of Americans helped pay for these recordings, and therefore are among their owners. You are hypocrites of the highest order by attempting to expunge the public record to influence an election. The fact that public radio continues to be funded by federal monies with which they promote a political agenda is a travesty. Here's hoping you and public radio in general eventually pay for your malfeasance and betrayal of the public trust.

By the way, the question asked in the first sentence is NOT rhetorical. As
one of your employers, I want an answer.

Read the disclosure at the bottom of the page:

Some of you have inquired as to why we didn’t request a takedown notice for the YouTube video. Here’s the deal: As an organization we strive to be an impeccable source of independent, unbiased news and information. While our audio content in this case was excerpted and repackaged in way that wasn’t in keeping with our own editorial standards, the source audio was available to others on the web and its use in this case was within generally acceptable fair use provisions. Thus, we didn’t have any clear legal claim to intervene one way or the other. And more importantly, to do so would have been tantamount to intervening on behalf of the Obama campaign. To take actions that could be construed as helping either campaign (Obama’s or McCain’s) is contrary to our own standards of reporting in an unbiased and independent manner. Instead, we believed the best approach was simply to make available the original source of the audio - in its entirety - for others to listen to themselves and to decide what Senator Obama said and meant.

re: #31 Charles

I downloaded one audio file (about an hour long) called, none other than (i'm laughing), "The Festival of Democracy" (featuring, "Khalidi in conversation with Salim Muwakkil"). I tried listening to it -- it's too sickening...turned it off....(although, I do suspect that one of the reasons The Zero, Hussein, continuously tries to bring up the Bush Administration and link it with McCain -- I suspect it's a coded reference for the benefit of the anti-Israel, antisemite crowd -- in other words, McCain is linked to Bush because Bush is pro-Israel, and therefore McCain would also be pro-Israel, so Obama shouts "CHANGE" which translates into "I'm anti-Israel", "I'm not going to be like the Bush Administration", "I'm pro-Palestinian", etc. That's what the "CHANGE" from the Bush administration means -- change to a pro-Arab stance.)

Is there any way to make sure ALL of them were moved and still available?

58 right Brain  Wed, Oct 29, 2008 1:07:02pm

I wrote to the station and received a prompt and polite reply:

James,
Thanks for your e-mail. We didn’t take the audio down from our site, there was a technical problem with our server. The audio is working now. In the future, if the Real Audio isn’t working, you can find all the archives here: [Link: apps.wbez.org...]
Thanks,

Chicago Public Radio

Will give them the benefit of the doubt that there was a simply a tech problem and its now corrected.

Excerpts are here at WGN Radio Chicago, where this was discussed on Monday night. Go here to get an mp3 podcast, uncut.

"Milt talks with Rich Lindberg about Obama's radio interview with WBEZ back in 2001."

60 Globular Cluster  Wed, Oct 29, 2008 3:18:21pm

I told you this would happen. I recommended that people use Streambox to capture the recordings before the evidence went down the memory hole.

61 Neo  Fri, Oct 31, 2008 8:14:12pm

They probably noticed their bandwidth was spiking as everyone hit those files over and over and someone flushed em to bring the server back under control. Times are tough for newspapers and other media outlets these days, they cut costs where they can.
