Plagiarism and other violations of property rights are rampant, and almost never get litigated due to the legal costs and uncertainty of recovery.

It's Christmas time in the city.

Earlier this year I had a post goofing on Obama that was widely linked. I got an email from a lefty blogger saying how she liked it and asked whether I wanted to crosspost at her site, which is well known, for rather dubious reasons, I might add. I politely said thanks, but no thanks, feel free to link, but no way am I posting there.

I go out for the night and forget about the whole thing. The next day I get an email from a friend asking me what the hell I was doing posting at that site. So I go there and see my name, an introduction from "me" saying I was now blogging there, and my original post cut and pasted in along with a bunch of links from other sites that had linked me.

So I write to this woman and tell her to take it down. She refuses. I write again and told her what she did would be my very next post explaining to all what kind of stunt she just pulled and I would make her life a living hell. She got all bitchy at me but finally removed my name.

A while later, she actually had the nerve to ask whether I wanted to post something there again. She was told in no uncertain terms to lose my email.

It's one thing if some completely obscure site posts your material, so long as you get credit. It's entirely another when someone pretends it's actually you posting there.

1) If Iowahawk has not registered his work with the Copyright Office, he should do so immediately. The "Congressional Motors" piece is still within the 3-months-of-first-publication grace period.

2) He can register his entire year's output on one set of forms, with one fee of $45, if he uses a Form TX (currently being phased out, but still downloadable on the Copyright Office website) WITH an adjunct Form GR/CP, which stands for "Group Registration of Contributions to Periodicals." Iowahawk's website is a "periodical," so he can register all his text using these two forms combined.

3) Once the work is registered, and the infringed piece is registered within the 3-month grace period, he can explore his legal options, should he wish to. But he should register first.

Can't you just put a copyright notice at the bottom without registering? I always thought that one had a right to copyright without registering.

You have the option to block the offending site, temporarily, under the DMCA--if you contact the site's ISP. If the ISP doesn't do it, the ISP--not the site--is liable for the infringement.

I didn't pursue anything further once my name was removed. If you want to link me, fine. I just didn't want in any way to be associated with that site outside of being linked. You can't control who's going to link you, obviously. I get linked at plenty of lefty sites taking swipes at me. No big deal. San Francisco International Airport is planning to give guilt-ridden travelers a chance to offset the air pollution emitted from their plane rides.

The airport says it will set up a series of kiosks that will allow travelers to purchase certified carbon offsets. The city of San Francisco, the airport and a carbon-reduction investment company, 3Degrees, plans to roll out a pilot program this spring.

Travelers will enter their destination into the kiosk, which will calculate the amount of carbon dioxide for which they are responsible, and the cost of offsetting it. After swiping their credit cards, they would get a receipt listing the exact carbon-reducing projects their money went to.

Voluntary taxation? Brilliant!

Unfortunately for Illinois, that argument doesn't fly between Downstate, The Collar Counties, and Cook County/Chicago. Cook is populous enough to balance the Collar Counties and Downstate. All it takes is a few dead people voting, and viola, you have Dick(head) Durbin and Barack Obama.

This is just a damn shame. I live in the San Diego area and I've listened to Rick every morning on the way to work for years.
Rick has done a lot of good things in this state, especially with respect to help passing legislation that toughen the laws against child molesters.
I'm not making excuses for him.
He stole from Iowahawk and he needs to man up to what he did, but it doesn't look like he's going to.
He deserves whatever happens to him but it still kills me.
