OT:
This is good.
Artist creates the perfect representation of the EU
The piece, an enormous mosaic installed in the European Council building over the weekend, was meant to symbolize the glory of a unified Europe by reflecting something special about each country in the European Union. But wait. Here is Bulgaria, represented as a series of crude, hole-in-the-floor toilets. Here is the Netherlands, subsumed by floods, with only a few minarets peeping out from the water. Luxembourg is depicted as a tiny lump of gold marked by a “for sale” sign, while five Lithuanian soldiers are apparently urinating on Russia.
France? On strike.
The 172-square-foot, eight-ton installation, titled “Entropa,” consists of a sort of puzzle formed by the geographical shapes of European countries. It was proudly commissioned by the Czech Republic to mark the start of its six-month presidency of the European Union. But the Czechs made the mistake of hiring the artist David Cerny to put together the project.
My favorite is the Netherlands

It's interesting that on Monday (1/12/09) the following was announced:
For the first time since the dawn of the jet age, two consecutive years have passed without a single airline passenger death on a U.S. carrier.
No passengers died in crashes in 2007 and 2008, a period in which 1.5 billion people took scheduled airline flights.
Going without a crash fatality for a full year has been rare.
Only four years since 1958 have passed without a passenger fatality, the analysis found. That makes the two-year string even more impressive, aviation safety experts say.

On July 25,1963 Congress established a set of guidelines under which the Medal of Honor could be awarded:
a.) while engaged in an action against an enemy of the United States;
b.) while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an opposing foreign force; or,
c.) while serving with friendly forces engaged in armed conflict against an opposing armed force in which the United States is not a belligerent party.

On the wings of an angel.
Awesome pilot. He saved some 150 lives today.
Awesome quick response from the NYC tugs, police, Coast Guard, and ferry systems.
I read that the people on one ferry that picked people up gave the survivors their coats, warmed their hands, put them in the warmest part of the ferry, hugged them to get them warm, etc. I'd call that an awesome team effort of good people.

He deserves a serious award, no doubt. But not this one! Guidelines:
On July 25,1963 Congress established a set of guidelines under which the Medal of Honor could be awarded:
a.) while engaged in an action against an enemy of the United States;
b.) while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an opposing foreign force; or,
c.) while serving with friendly forces engaged in armed conflict against an opposing armed force in which the United States is not a belligerent party.More here: [Link: www.cmohs.org...]
Thanks for the clarifications. Alas, I am clueless on such things. So what could he get instead? Presidential Medal of Honor, certainly....
New York should give him a parade. A good, old fashioned ticker tape parade. We need some real heroes and this gentlemen is the genuine article.....

If I remember correctly that was the incident where an Air National Guard A-7 unit was awarded an air medal for executing an unplanned, high performance formation landing to clear the way for the airliner.
National attention focused on the unit in 1989 when United Airlines Flight 232, flown by a crew led by Captain Al Haynes, was forced to crash land at the Sioux City Airport. With its key role in the crash recovery and rescue of survivors in the crash, the 185th was credited with helping save numerous lives and showed the nation the true heart of Siouxland and the unit.

re: #183 Vet_Missing_Parts (1LT, Ret)
Living proof that with enough thrust, you can get anything to fly.
Yep. For awhile the F4 held some impressive records for time-to-altitude.
Something on the order of, from brake-release up to 60,000 feet in approx. 60 seconds. Remember the story of a control tower who challenged an F4 sitting on the runway to catch a B52 that was making a contrail, way out on the horizon. IIRC, the F4 streaked past the B52 seventy-two miles away, in less then two minutes.
Noisy bastards, especially on an aircraft carrier. Really good air support when you're unarmed and being chased by MiG's, however.

Hamas proposed a year-long, renewable cease-fire, the withdrawal of all Israel forces within 5 to 7 days, and the immediate opening of all Gaza border crossings, backed by international guarantees they would stay open.
A whole year. You mean it'll take that long to rearm. You'd think with their superior tunnel building technology they could be up and running again in 3-4 months. ISRAEL DON'T STOP!
/what does renewable mean/ do they have to go to a notary?

The pilot made a very good decision. With both engines out and not much altitude, he should not glide over Manhattan, the Bronx or Queens to try to land back at LaGuardia. He almost certainly would have lost too much speed and altitude and landed short in some neighborhood. He obviously had sufficient speed and altitude to correctly situate the aircraft for ditching in the river and he had the skill and experience to recognize it. His decision to ditch in the river not only saved the lives of those on board, but also many lives on land as well. He did it right.

Ceasefire didn't work in Gulf War 1. It didn't work in any of the Lebanon wars. It won't work with Hamas.
What will work...call it a "peace plan" if you like....is the obliteration of Hamas as a military presence. Islamic Jihad and the Al Asqas, too.

For all the shit New Yorkers get, they always seem to rush in to help when their city needs them. Bravo to all the captains.
There are two New York Cities.
There are the people who go to art galleries and Broadway openings, continue to groan about Rudy Giuliani, and vote for Hillary Clinton as if she's actually a New Yorker.
Then there are the New Yorkers who actually make the whole thing work. Cops, firemen, cabbies, waiters, hotel desk clerks, etc.
You can guess which ones were piloting the ferries and the tugs today.

It's hard to clearly recognize all the pertinent factors in such a tense and time-constrained situation. No doubt his military flying, which is some of the most difficult multi-task work there is, helped. Military pilots in combat have to keep track of their basic instrumentation, maneuver their aircraft violently without exceeding its abilities, operate weapons systems and radio systems, keep track of enemies both in the air and on ground and perhaps a half dozen other things. Even doing everything right is not always enough for a military pilot, but failure to do it right tends to be painful and expensive.

He said, if you find yourself survivng the impact, do whatever you can to avoid panicing becuase you'll need to remain calm to plan your escape.
Yeah, right dude. Easier said than done.

I haven't read this thread yet. Of course I am thankful to God that everyone survived and I can use this incident to celebrate the resiliency of the human spirit! The pilot, flight crew, passengers, first responders (professional and civilian) and all else involved are a credit to all that is good with our species. I also must (grudgingly) give credit where it's due. In this case, CNN has covered this event very well. I'm a NY'er who is currently in Rhode Island for business and I am very impressed at the job they did today. I don't like their politics and lefty slant but CNN and Wolfie in particular kept me very informed and asked pertinent questions as it all unfolded. Dobbs was very good, Campbell was ok and now Larry is being Larry. The real time coverage reminded me of the unique for its time coverage by CNN of the start of Desert Storm. PALIN/SULLENBERGER 2012

I just got in so I haven't had a chance to read the details of the crash, but I was wondering how deep the water is at the point where the plane came to a rest? Why hasn't it sunk? I apologize if those are stupid questions...
Don't know how deep it was but if it was landing in NY maybe the empty fuel tanks served as some sort of ballast.
281 | Optimizer Thu, Jan 15, 2009 6:57:31pm |
Clearly this was an act of international terrorism. A coordinated effort by a group called GEESE, in from Canada, brought down this plane and their religious affiliation remains conspicuously unreported...
Any bets on how long it takes to hear from PETA on this? (I think they have ties to GEESE, BTW.)

I can remember the flight instructor looking
at me and saying after a particularly totally
screwed up landing and saying...
"Don't do that again I don't want to die..."
Then saying something about a "good landing
is something that you can walk away from...mutter mutter".
So when I see a picture like this all I can say is...
"Sir - well done Sir!"

Stay warm, neighbor (I'm less than 20 miles from Canada, myself) - especially tomorrow! (And your "secret" is safe with me!) My kid may be off school tomorrow due to the slightly negative temperature (in degF) plus high wind producing a "not-so-slightly negative" wind chill.
This really is quite the feel-good story. Besides, how many times do you hear them tell you what to do in case of a water landing, and how many times has it EVER happened (and in such a way that what they tell you would really help)? Maybe I'll pay more attention next time.

Fellow Lizards,
As a pilot of more than a few years myself, I must say that the words my flight instructors drilled in to me are still ringing in my ears.
No matter what happens, DO NOT FORGET TO FLY THE AIRCRAFT!
I know it sounds stupid, but you'd be amazed how many very experienced people get extremely flustered when bad stuff starts happening. Captain Sullenberg kept his cool. Aircraft do not fall when the engines stop producing power. It's physics: an object in motion will stay moving unless something stops it. He continued flying until they had safely stopped.
Should anything that bad happen to me, I hope I can stay as cool as he did.
291 | zeir Fri, Jan 16, 2009 11:17:19am |
It's a good day for New York, true. I am also gratified that Sully is not a youngster, flying for 38 years. His resume, on his website, is very impressive; it is as if he has a Doctorate in emergency landings! Why, indeed, compel such a master to retire?
