OT? Maybe not. It goes to the mindset that infects both Blago and the Dems in Congress:
Hill Republican: Stimulus aids illegal immigrants
A top Republican congressional aide says the $800 billion-plus economic stimulus measure could steer government checks to illegal immigrants.
Republican officials are concerned that the Democratic-written legislation makes people who came to the United States illegally eligible for tax credits of $500 per worker and $1,000 per couple.
A House-passed version of the bill and one making its way through the Senate both disqualify nonresident aliens from receiving the credits. But neither requires a worker to have a Social Security number to get the credits.
An economic aid measure enacted in February 2008 that sent rebates to most wage earners required that people have valid Social Security numbers in order to get checks.
So illegals are “disqualified”, but no social security number is required to get the credits. This is what is known as a loophole, is it not?

re: #38 joncelli
Okay, so what the hell is the Chewbacca defense?
It’s a legendary defense tactic Johnny Cochrane used in a South Park Episode.
Johnny Cochrane: Ladies and Gentlemen of this deposed jury, Chef’s attorney
would certainly want you to believe his client wrote Stinky Britches ten years
ago, and they make a good case. Hell, I almost felt pity myself. But Ladies and
Gentlemen of this deposed jury, I have one final thing I want you to consider.[Walks up to a chart stand]
Johnny Cochrane: Ladies and Gentlemen,[Pulls down picture of Chewbacca]
This is Chewbacca. Chewbacca is a Wookie from the planet Kashyyk, but
Chewbacca lives on the planet Endor. Now think about it. That does not
make sense.Gerald (Whispering): Dammit.
Chef (Whispering): What?
Gerald (Whispering): He’s using the Chewbacca defense.Johnny Cochrane: Why would a Wookie, an eight-foot-tall Wookie, want to live
on Endor with a bunch of two-foot-tall Ewoks. That does not make sense. But
more important, you have to ask yourself what does this have to do with this
case.[Jury stares in silence]
Johnny Cochrane: Nothing. Ladies and Gentlemen, it has nothing to do with
this case.[Gerald sinks back and covers his eyes]
Johnny Cochrane: It does not make sense. Look at me. I’m a lawyer defending
a major record company and I’m talkin’ about Chewbacca. Does that make sense?
Ladies and Gentlemen I am not making any sense. None of this makes sense.
And so you have to remember when you’re in that jury room deliberating and
conjugating the Emancipation Proclamation, does it make sense? No. Ladies
and Gentlemen of this deposed jury it does not make sense. If Chewbacca
lives on Endor you must acquit. The defense rests.
It has since come to describe any incoherent legal defense that has no bearing on the actual issues or charges. Blago is in possibly the finest position of anyone since OJ himself to actually use a real life Chewbacca Defense. It would be a great loss to this country if he does not do so.

May I remind those people that he was ready to go forth and sell Obama’s senate seat. Should he have just sit on his hands and let it happen? This doesn’t even cover what he’s already done as part of his office and for which subpoenas have been sent out.

Blago understands something very important about impeachment: it’s a political process. He’s reaching out to the public. That’s the correct strategy. Whether he’s credible is a different question. He could borrow from Bill Clinton’s playbook during his impeachment, and get Larry Flynt to offer a bounty for information about the sex lives of the Illinois legislature. Then he could blackmail them for an acquittal.
Unless, of course, he already has the dirt on them …

re: #41 subsailor68
OT?
Looks like a loophole to me!

When Rezko’s trial was going on, I had to go to the Tribune online to find out anything about it. It wasn’t covered in the local papers and it wasn’t ever covered in the local TV media. That’s why I was so surprised that the impeachment went forward. Woulda been smarter to let Fitz prosecute him.
They want to get him out of office before he can damage Obama any more.

Here it is:
The current text of the House stimulus bill includes the following interesting provision:
None of the funds provided by this Act may be made available to the State of Illinois, or any agency of the State, unless (1) the use of such funds by the State is approved in legislation enacted by the State after the date of the enactment of this Act, or (2) Rod R. Blagojevich no longer holds the office of Governor of the State of Illinois. The preceding sentence shall not apply to any funds provided directly to a unit of local government (1) by a Federal department or agency, or (2) by an established formula from the State.

Who is slimier than Rod Blagojevich? Jimmy Carter, of course:
Carter: I’ve spoken to Obama, Mitchell
January 28, 2009
WASHINGTON (JTA) — Jimmy Carter says he has spoken with President Obama and his Middle East peace envoy since Obama assumed office.
“I’ve had two conversations with President Obama and I’ve had two conversations with George Mitchell, even since he was chosen,” Carter told National Public Radio in an interview Tuesday promoting his new book, “We Can Have Peace in the Holy Land: A Plan That Will Work. “And I think that they will obviously get advice and counsel and information from many other sources.”
Obama named Mitchell, a former U.S. senator from Maine, to be his envoy to Israeli-Palestinian peace talks last week.
A source close to the White House said Carter might have been referring to routine conversations with Obama, for instance, during the inauguration, when all the former presidents are gathered together. Obama was not actively soliciting Carter’s advice on the Middle East, the source said.
State Department spokesmen were not immediately available for comment about conversations with Mitchell.
During the 2008 campaign, Democrats sought to distance themselves from the former president and broker of the 1978 Egypt-Israel peace accords. Carter had angered U.S. Jewish groups with his 2006 book, “Palestine: Peace not Apartheid,” which likened Israel’s settlement practices to apartheid and accused the pro-Israel lobby of intimidating its critics. He made an appearance at the Democratic convention but was not allowed to speak.
Carter’s latest book is less confrontational and more prescriptive. It counsels dealings with Hamas, a terrorist group, but is mindful of Israeli concerns about maintaining Israel’s Jewish character.

Please don’t dishonor Richard Nixon by comparing him to Blago. Nixon was wrong about many things but he was right about communism and the necessity of resisting it. Blago and the IL Dems have embraced commies, even terrorist ones.
Marx was correct about something. In The 18th Brumaire of Louis Napoleon he said “All the events and characters in history occur twice, the first time as tragedy, the second as farce.” Nixon was a tragedy of a man with great capacity and a wounded personality. Blago is a farce with a street hustler. Walter may be able to offer theater criticism of whether King Lear in prison is nobler or just a bunch of criminals reading lines.

Blago took a couple of very interesting parting shots. He took a swipe at Rahm Emanuel, Jimmy DeLeo, and threatened several times to take others down with him. Combine that with Ed Gensen dropping him as a client, and I do believe Blago either will be, or is singing.

The “stimulus” claim is based on something called the Keynesian “multiplier,” which is that each $1 of spending the government “injects” into the economy yields 1.5 times that in greater output. There’s little evidence to support this theory, but you have to admire its beauty because it assumes the government can create wealth out of thin air. If it were true, the government should spend $10 trillion and we’d all live in paradise. (From the Wall Street Journal 1-26-09)
Of course, politicians ARE in paradise these days. They enjoy full support from the bulk of the public to “do something different … anything.” So what if the different is impossible? So what if the different will bankrupt the nation forever and likely drive inflation to inconceivable levels—not to mention devalue the dollar? So what if the politicians grow government to a point where the great majority of people depend upon the coercion of wealth transfers from the few—and hated—very rich, upon whose dwindling fortune the entire world depends? So what if freedom is forgotten, individual rights ignored and government’s “right” and need to do whatever it takes to hold on to power is the first and only priority?
This is no economic stimulus. It’s a wealth transfer, the biggest one in human history. America is the first wealthy nation ever to adopt socialism on this scale. You see, America actually has something to socialize. Traditionally, poor countries turned to socialism because the masses were ignorant, there was no middle or upper income sector, people were desperate and what was there to lose, after all? America has much to lose. America has everything to lose. Barney Frank and Nancy Pelosi are ill-equipped to legislate into existence an economy that took centuries for entrepreneurs and innovators to build.
Like 9/11, I shouldn’t be surprised, but I still cannot believe what I’m witnessing. An economic downturn—fueled partially if not totally by reckless government policies of intervention in the economy—has provided THE excuse for doing what had previously been impossible: Nationalizing entire industries in one fell swoop—banking, automobiles, health care, who knows what else—and turning the richest nation in history into socialist “utopia.”

Monty Python did a skit, with a Robin Hood-like bandit, Dennis Moore.
He starts out stealing from the rich and giving to the poor.
By the end of the skit, the poor couple is rich, and refuses the loot because it isn’t good enough, and the formerly-rich are shivering in their underwear with nothing else to give.

And with that, it’s over… and no poetic recitations…
He’s been arrested for selling a US Senate seat. There has not been an indictment yet. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying he didn’t try, just that he hasn’t been officially charged yet. Plus, it’s unfortunate that the actual “sale” wasn’t allowed to happen. That way both Blago and the willing candidate would have been caught.

From my limited experience and knowledge, that article still pegs my BS meter. You should send to Charles.

Just wanted to say thank you to all of you who’ve expressed sympathy for me and prayers.
But I ain’t gone yet and am fighting going at all.
And no offense to Atheists or Agnostics, but I believe that I’m not going until God wants me.
But again, thanks to all who expressed sympathies.

re: #354 realwest
Uh, how has he damage Obama (yet?) other than to expose the fact that not only did Emmauel did have conversations (a few) with Blago’s representative but actually - according to the tapes that have been released so far - FIFTEEN conversations?
I still don’t see how he hurt Obama…………yet.
Within hours after Blago took his case to the public in Chicago, Edward Genson his high-powered defense lawyer in the Federal corruption case resigned. John Kass, a Chicago Tribune columnist, assessed that event as follows:
“…demands about Emanuel forced Genson to fire himself from the case. Emanuel had been the U.S. representative of the 5th Congressional District. The previous congressman was Blagojevich. The district is dominated by western suburban towns with long mob histories. It is politically dominated by Genson’s good friend and Balgojevich’s former shadow governor, state Sen. James DeLeo. Surely, President Obama would not appreciate his chief of staff publicly reminding America about those earthy political allies.”
I agree with John Kass, I think more than anything, BHO would prefer Emanuel not be so exposed.

Blagomilosevic can blagoviate all he wants, but he’s not in Serbia and Balkans rules do not apply.
There’s people who are natural, born liars. They make an art form of it. They’re the sports stars of the genre. Clinton was one of the best. Blago is a wannabe. His lies are big ones piled on little ones, but he doesn’t scratch dirt back on them well enough.

Sounds to me to be reasonable grounds for appeal. I mean c’mon, would anyone zealously defend some guy who smeared shit on em?
Why not? Do your best. But the jury has seen it. Even your best won’t be enough. And hey, think what a feather it would be in your cap, and something to be put on a resume. I go the extra mile for MY clients.

I dunno. The VA is like the government: too bureaucratic, and too damn big to work. I’m tired of it, so if they start jerking me around I’m going to start yelling. I may get kicked out by security, but dammit I’m going to get answers!

OT, found in headlines area at HotAir:
Obama Suggested FDR’s ‘New Deal’ Was Too Small, House Republicans Say
Thursday, January 29, 2009
Excerpt:
“FDR’s initial steps did actually work,” Obama said at the meeting, according to King. Obama went on to say, “Then he [FDR] pulled back towards a balanced budget, and then what you had was a recession within a depression. Then World War II came along and was the biggest stimulus plan ever.”
WW2 was a stimulus plan? Who knew?

Prostate Antigen something - prostate cancer test. I’ve had Prostate Cancer for 3 years and, according to the tests it’s recently become more “aggressive”.
Is surgery a viable option?
