White House Press Secretary on Release of AQ Khan

World • Views: 2,494

At today’s press briefing, this was Robert Gibbs’ response to a question about whether Barack Obama is concerned about the release of nuclear black marketeer A.Q. Khan:

Q: Is the President concerned that Pakistani nuclear scientist A.Q. Khan will be a proliferation risk, now that he’s been released from house arrest? And will he renew the US request for him to be interviewed by US intelligence?

Gibbs: Uh, obviously we’ve seen the reports of the release, but have not received, uh, have yet to receive official word, uh, from the government. Uh. Obviously this President has made clear, uh, many times, the great concern he has for nuclear proliferation, uh, and, uh, as we hear from the government about, uh, these reports, uh, obviously, uh, the President, uh, and this government want assurances that, uh, that Dr. Khan is not involved or engaged in, uh, any of the activity, uh, uh, that resulted in, uh, in, in his house arrest earlier.

That’s telling ‘em.

Assurances? Who is Gibbs kidding here? There’s no way anyone can make assurances that Khan isn’t going to go back to tipping off regimes around the world to what he knows about nuclear tech. There’s nothing Pakistan can say that can assure anyone that Khan isn’t going to talk.

Besides, Khan is a Pakistani hero. He’s the father of the Pakistani nuclear program and treated as a national hero.

And what’s forgotten is that Khan was discovered passing on nuclear tech and info not through the IAEA, but through US and UK actions that led to the formation of the PSI.

When I was a student in Germany, I worked vacations at Daimler-Benz, building Mercedes cars (one time I was on the sports car line!) as a fill-in for workers on holiday. It was a great job (something different every time), paid well, and the people were wonderful.

When I showed up for my first gig, we had an orientation that laid down the rules. One of them was that no alcohol was to be consumed anywhere on factory grounds.

So imagine my surprise on that first day when the canteen cart came around and my supervisor bought a case of liter beer bottles, then proceeded to sell them to the line workers throughout the rest of the day.

I asked him about it, and he told me in the best Swabian dialect, “Bier isch koi Alkohol, Bier isch a Lebnsmittel.”

“Bier isn’t alcohol, beer is a food.”

re: #91 Cato the Elder

I remember the same from when I was stationed there. German workers would be allowed 2 beers for lunch. And they were in big bottles.
Hell, I used to get beer delivered to the house……pretty different from when I was a kid and it was milk that got delivered.

The Obama administration is in shock.

They actually believed that international tensions would be lowered with a new president in DC. They seem to have bought into the brain-dead meme that US intransigence was driving worldwide hostility. They really thought aggressive nations would step back and greet his arrival as a new beginning.

That shit plays well in a college classroom, or the pages of the Daily Kos… but in the real world each whiff of weakness is an opportunity for the uglies to consolidate their positions.

If I survive it I won’t be at all surprised to learn that AQ Khan was the tutor of the person who came to our shores, leased a tall building’s middle floor, built the bomb there then detonated it.
Makes perfect sense.
All they want is worldwide caliphate.
All America needs to do is capitulate into submission.
The whole place need not be destroyed, just a city or three.
Of course I will mourn the loss of all of the lives when Israel is destroyed…….they’d probably do that the same day.

Business of the Bomb - The Modern Nuclear Marketplace
From part 3:

The Khan network was first exposed in September 2003, when U.S. and British intelligence agents boarded a freighter en route to Libya and found a cargo hold full of centrifuges that were traced back to Pakistan. The leads generated by that intervention laid down a trail which led to some 30 countries, each one of which has different laws governing the export of sensitive technologies to nuclear or “rogue” states. There is no international body that can bring smugglers to justice. If they are to be prosecuted, the cases must be brought by individual countries, but prosecutors may need information and help from other nations.

The discovery of the centrifuges prompted President Bush to declare, in a speech to the National Defense University, that the United States would launch an aggressive effort to cooperate with foreign military and intelligence services to “find the middlemen, the suppliers, and the buyers,” and would cooperate with foreign military and intelligence services “to stop the spread of deadly weapons.”

But critics say that the United States has not offered as much cooperation as Bush seemed to promise in pursuing the smugglers involved in the A.Q. Khan network. And more than four years later, not one of the members of Khan’s vast network is in prison.

Out of the dozens of individuals and businesses in some 30 countries suspected of having links to the Khan network, no one other than the three businessmen in South Africa, and a fourth in the Netherlands (who served four months in prison in 2006) have been brought to justice.

These are the noun verb and object respectively of the language gibberish.

/Now, aren’t you glad I shared that with you?

Expect BO to kick Gibbs to the curb after he throws him under the bus sometime in the near future.

214 LauraO  Fri, Feb 6, 2009 1:58:12pm

I had posted a comment about this the other day. I swear that he does this on purpose so you can’t follow what he is saying! It drives me crazy. If they spoke the truth and logic, it would just stream from your mouth, contrived stories don’t come that easy.

Gibbs reminds me of the Stanley Rothenstein’s lawyer in My Cousin Vinny

Gibbs will be history soon. “The One” can’t have competition in the “uh” department.

217 Outrider  Fri, Feb 6, 2009 2:40:34pm

Is the “uh” contagion spreading in this administration?

218 Outrider  Fri, Feb 6, 2009 2:43:07pm
…and this government want assurances that, uh, that Dr. Khan is not involved or engaged in, uh, any of the activity, uh, uh, that resulted in, uh, in, in his house arrest earlier.

Think the administration would be content with a simple denial?

Considering President Obama is the messiah, doesn’t that make Gibbs the Voice of the Messiah? I would have thunk The One would have a more polished front man. If he’s supposed to be the Metatron, the President should have stuck with Alan Rickman.

“uh, uh, uh, uh”

And the creeps in the media had the nerve to bash GWB for strategery and the Internets?

Nice English, Gibbs. BTW your boss is a P*SSY.

Barry obviously needs a tool more than he needs polish. (No, there is not a pun intended)

That’ll show ‘em….hell ya….

Did Helen Thomas get her front row seat back?

223 TimO  Fri, Feb 6, 2009 8:24:49pm

The motto and legacy of the Obama administration: “Uh, uh, uh, uh, uh….”

224 Earthwirm  Fri, Feb 6, 2009 11:11:31pm

and to think Bush was excoriated by these people for being an inadequate communicator.
