How many other countries actually attempt to identify every last casualty for better or for worse?

Good news on the report. Glad to see the IDF working so hard to clarify what has really happened.

Like we can believe a report on IDF casualties given out by the IDF… We all know that all the palestinians killed were children and women and metal factory workers.

So, 300 (actual noncombatant deaths) vs. 900 (stated by Hamas). I’m surprised Hamas stayed so low. They could have said 5,000 and the wolrd media would have bought it.

Okay, Isreal, look, I love your country and I am on your side, but guys, seriously… you need to step up in the media war. yes, i know that there is at least functional anti-semitism, and the clear cut stuff, all over the place, but really, its been almost a month and NOW you are confronting the lies. What’s astonishing is how hard the IDF tried to avoid collateral damage. That means excellent intelligence, among others things. Many people risked their lives to save the lives of non-combatants.

Absolutely. This is the strongest point in favor of the Israelis. I mean, contrast the two sides. One intentionally targets children, firing their rockets during school hours to maximize the chance of hitting them. The other, even during a retributive strike into Gaza itself, puts its soldiers at risk to avoid hitting civilians…to the point of phoning warnings ahead of attacks.

But it does no good, in the sense that the higher moral ground that the IDF takes does not prevent it from being hammered in the media and by the elite.

Decent AP story on anti-Semitic attacks worldwide.

[Link: www.startribune.com…]

…….Firebombs were hurled at synagogues in France, Sweden and Belgium, Jews were beaten in England and Norway and an Italian union endorsed a boycott of Jewish-owned shops. In Venezuela, vandals shattered religious objects at a synagogue and spray-painted, “Jews, get out,” on the walls.
In Yemen, where Islamic militancy is on the rise, anti-Israel protesters pelted several Jewish homes with rocks and smashed windows, injuring at least one person, security officials said.

I really appreciated this paragraph:

If we compare them with WW II (Dresden, Tokyo) or even Vietnam, these casualty figures are astoundingly low for civilian casualties, which run in the 80-99% range. Even if we compare them with NATO in Belgrade or the US in Mosul, the lowest figures for such activity on record outside of Israel, then the Israeli army outperforms virtually every military on record in the world for its ability to minimize civilian casualties.

From the link:

Not quite.

If 300 of those identified were characterized as civilians, that is not one-third, but one-fourth—a smaller proportion of collateral damage.

If 580 of those killed were positively identified as Hamas, that makes almost one-half of the identified casualties definitely legitimate targets, leaving questions about a mere 1/4 of the identified casualties. Mind you, the “questions” exist here only because that quarter was not “positively identified” as Hamas, meaning that it would include persons shooting or engaging in other hostile activities but the nature of whose “official” affiliation was not known.

And of those, how many were family members forced to be in the same room as the “legitimate” target?

re: #33 Dave the…..
Um, Dave - since it was from the AP I read the article with some degree of suspicion and found this

The fury over Gaza has centered around the hundreds of Palestinian civilians killed in the war, in which 13 Israelis also died. Israel says it could not avoid killing civilians because Gaza militants operate from residential areas, but critics accuse it of using disproportionate force in its war to halt rocket attacks on its territory.
The steep Palestinian death toll sparked protests across the Muslim world, Europe and in Venezuela, and in some cases, the rage turned to violence. Firebombs were hurled at synagogues in France, Sweden and Belgium, Jews were beaten in England and Norway and an Italian union endorsed a boycott of Jewish-owned shops. In Venezuela, vandals shattered religious objects at a synagogue and spray-painted, “Jews, get out,” on the walls.

[emphasis added, realwest]

What we are missing (Im hoping the IDF provides this, too) are statistics on how many of the civilians were killed by Hamas

Are the 30+ Fatahniks that were executed by Hamas included under civilians, fex?

And then there is the bit about the UNRWA school that was hit, then wasnt hit by the IDF: turns out the bodycount at the school wasnt 42, but 12 - 9 Hamasniks and 3 civilians. Part of the reason Hamas blew it up to 42 was the inclusion of a family living some 50-60 meters away from where the IDF shells hit the Hamasniks. Something hit their home, killing 12 of them.

Me, Im guessing a Qassam misfiring after the IDF hit the Hamasniks at the school. Bodies can always be blamed on the evil joos, no matter who killed them.

Boy George. Yeeks………… Up dinged for the bad pun.

I heard about him starting a 15 Month jail sentence last week. Looked it up and found this.

Boy George, whose real name is George O’Dowd, is serving a 15-month sentence after being found guilty for chaining Norwegian Audun Carlsen to a hook in a bedroom at his East London apartment in April 2007.

The two had planned to work on some tracks together but his spell behind bars put an end to the collaboration.

So the chaining him to a hook in his bedroom wasn’t the part that ended the collaboration?

These numbers are truly remarkable, given the circumstances. It’s an amazing technical and command performance. BUT, I am not certain that it makes the point. I still say that every high-ranking Hamas official should be blessed with as large a bomb as is available, until people fear to be within a thousand yards of them. If this is a WAR, then such things are not only justified, but necessary for victory. Even to attempt such counter-productive precision, is fiercely expensive, and cost can lose a war as much as military issues. In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if in the history of the world, the economic cost of armies and battle accounted for more results than direct fighting. As to the cost of casualties, well, same deal, right?

172 damnyanqui  Mon, Feb 16, 2009 10:23:45am

Yes. I love this too.

So the Israelis engage in a military campaign that lasts a matter of days in response to thousands of rockets fired at their country over a period of years and that’s “disproportionate.”
Obviously they’ve got to stop doing that.
The “narrative” is very simple to understand: It’s okay to be a terrorist as long as you’re an incompetent terrorist. Each of those rockets could have murdered innocent civilians and was meant to murder innocent civilians.
…but because virtually none succeeded… it’s okay!
And any response to such incompetence, however homicidal the incomptetent terrorist was in intent, is “disproportionate.”
SO…
Here’s a simple way to make the whole equation much simpler and proportionate.
Instead of sitting for years and letting the terrorists bombard them with near impunity before taking massive action, the Israelis should just reply one-for-one to each individual rocket fired at their territory.
One terrorist rocket fired at Israel.
One Israeli rocket fired back.
Of course the Israeli rockets are much bigger and more accurate and have better range, so the cost to the terrorists will be vastly greater, but the connection would be much easier to draw.
The current Israeli approach is rather like slapping your dog and sticking him in the shed after he messes the floor and chews up the furniture for the 50th time, instead of letting him have it each time.
Animals need to have things explained to them in extremely simple and immediate ways.
And so it is with the terrorists.

So, you would have been happy if the statement read like this…

“We believe the United States is a Western country and that Americans are part of the Western people. We believe that the United States derives from and is an integral part of Western civilization and the Western people and that the American people and government should remain Western in their composition and character. We therefore oppose the massive immigration of non-Western peoples into the United States that threatens to transform our nation into a non-Western majority in our lifetime. We believe that illegal immigration must be stopped, if necessary by military force and placing troops on our national borders; that illegal aliens must be returned to their own countries; and that legal immigration must be severely restricted or halted through appropriate changes in our laws and policies. We also oppose all efforts to mix the races of mankind, to promote non-white races over the Western-American people through so-called “affirmative action” and similar measures, to destroy or denigrate the Western-American heritage, including the heritage of the Southern people, and to force the integration of the races.”

“Above all, we need to halt the glaring breach of core principles of international law such as limitations on the unilateral use of force, proportionality in self-defence and the protection of civilians during hostilities in order to avoid a repeat of the civilian carnage in Iraq and, most recently, in Gaza.”

El Baradei intentionally misrepresents the principle of “proportionality” in this statement (not surprisingly).

Contrary to common belief, there is no requirement that a party acting in self-defense use force that is “proportional” to what was used against them. If there were, wars would go on forever. All we could have done to Japan, for example, is bomb one of their harbors and sink a few ships.

The actual requirement under international law is that the ue of force be proportional to the military objective. For example, if your objective is to take out a sniper who’s shooting at you from the top of a bulding, carpet bombing the entire village full of civilians is not proportional force. Dropping a 500 lb bomb on the building, however, is, even though a 500 lob bomb is grossly disproportionate to a sniper rifle.

El Baradei is a lawyer, and he is undoubtedly aware of this principle.

I replace European with Western.

Livni: Give up half of ‘Land of Israel’

JERUSALEM – Tzipi Livni, who hopes to be appointed Israel’s prime minister-designate, said Monday Israel must give up considerable territory in exchange for peace with the Palestinians, drawing a clear distinction with her rival, Benjamin Netanyahu.
She told a convention of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Organizations, “we need to give up half of the Land of Israel,” using a term that refers to biblical borders that include today’s Israel, the West Bank and Gaza.
She explained that such a withdrawal would be for the good of Israel, to maintain it as a Jewish state.

(Hi Walter! Saw your post, and I know you sure don’t need my help either, but just want to reply to him anyway.)

Claspur, I’ve been reading Walter’s posts for a long time, and both enjoy ‘em and usually learn something. He’s a writer. All that means is that you need to be clear on what you’re saying (nope, he doesn’t seem to ping on folks’ grammar or spelling - but you’d better be on point). He also asks folks to back up what they say with a reference or two…and that’s also a good thing.

Just sayin’.

re: #241 opinionated

I don’t go for the theories that Obama will be some sort of dictator- he can’t in our system of Government- but he did prove to me this weekend that he sure has the arrogance of one.

He is been in office just a month and he went to [vacation in]Chicago.

I read where the White House says he will be going to Chicago nearly every month. Hey, he likes Chicago. He has friends there. His favorite barber is there. We can all understand that, right.

But. He is President and when he travels he screws up the lives of many many people. Thousands are inconvenienced. Traffic is snarled.

You would think he would show some courtesy to the “little” people he claims to hear and represent. Maybe get a haircut closer to home. Maybe think of other people.

I imagine all he feels is the prerogative of Royalty.

To let youi now just how considerate Obama is of the little people, when he set up his ‘President Elect” office in Chicago it was in Federal Plaza in the Loop. He has liking for Deli from Manny’s , a Chicago institution. One afternoon, Barry went there with the whole motorcade to pick up carry out.
He could have sent anyone , but no, he screwed up traffic & of course got applauded when he entered the restaurant.

Sorry if it’s been posted:

[Link: news.yahoo.com…]

Be better if they gave up all of Livni.
Israel: Where appeasement lives.

Has she negotiated whay days they’ll allow murder and rape yet?

Thanks. And of course, I make mistakes, and I rant and there are times I am down right wrong in the way I treat certain Lizards. But that’s life and that’s what makes us adults, especially if we can understand when we fall short and make amends. And I do apologize or retract my comments when I have overstepped.

Thanks again.

You can order a book and someone brings it right to your front door. It has a magical feel to it.

The only thing better is having a Kindle.

You click on a couple of links, and the book shows up in your hands in about a minute.

It never has and it never will.
I’ll support Israel forever, but I’m growing jaded by their seeming indifference to their own plight.
It’s time for the Israelis to grow up. We’re rapidly approaching a day when Iran will be able to slaughter vast swaths of the Israeli populace at the push of a button. Israel is surrounded by enemies who alternate between rocket attacks and suicide bombers in their quest to rid the world of Jews.
Whatever negatives accrue to Israel for acting decisively (UN condemnation, MSM tut-tuts, Academic paeans to the suffering of the “refugees”) they will be far easier to bear than the consequences of not acting.

No thanks needed! And I’ve seen you apologize when you thought it needed….and a couple of times when it wasn’t.

re: #103 realwest

Huh, I wonder where this came from: “Vietnam, these casualty figures are astoundingly low for civilian casualties, which run in the 80-99% range”?

I think the sentence was poorly written.
Viet Nam had high civilian casualties (in the 80-90% range) while GAZA had the astoundingly low per cent of ~33%
Look at it in the original context.
But I do the same thing in writing weirdly phrased long sentences.

277 transient  Mon, Feb 16, 2009 11:15:30am
As a consequence of the false information, he added, the IDF was considering setting up a “response team” for future conflicts whose job would be to collect information, analyze it and issue reports as rapidly as possible that refuted Hamas fabrications.

They’re only figuring this out NOW? You’d have thought they’d learned from Lebanon II. This should have been on the ground active for THIS conflict.

278 transient  Mon, Feb 16, 2009 11:20:06am

From Jpost:

During the Gaza offensive, which ended on January 18, teams collected data on how the homemade rockets and the military-grade Katyushas fired by Gaza terrorists behaved in different weather conditions and how they were picked up by Iron Dome’s radar, which is already online, the officials said.

The system is being designed as an answer to the Gaza rocket fire….

The system will work by picking up incoming rockets and firing an interceptor. Iron Dome has been criticized by some experts because of its cost…and because it needs 15 seconds to respond, too long to stop rockets from hitting targets adjacent to Gaza.

Several Israeli tanks were fitted with the Wind Coat, a new system that detects anti-tank rockets and intercepts them in midair.

Wow. It’s so…Star Trek!
