Sweden Boycotts Durban II

World • Views: 2,789

Joining Canada, Israel, Italy, the United States, and Australia: Sweden to boycott UN racism conference.

Sweden will not send any ministerial officials to the UN conference on racism in Geneva on Monday, said Swedish Integration Minister Nyamko Subini.

“This has been a difficult and problematic negotiation that has certainly become more constructive and positive in the last week, but we have decided that Sweden will not be participating at the ministerial level,” she said.

In the days leading up to the conference, there have been intense discussions between, grossly oversimplified, “east and west” regarding differences over issues such as freedom of expression vs. religious freedom, the Holocaust and colonialism.

In the last week, the negotiations have led to the drafting of a document that has been seen by the conference as a success, according to Sabuni. But nevertheless, Sweden refuses to participate in a meeting where individuals such as the president of Iran, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who has taken controversial stances on many of the issues, will be present. This is due to worry that it will be a repeat of the last conference on racism – which was chaotic – eight years ago.

Civil servants might still participate, depending on how the discussions unfold.

When asked by TT if she thought it might send a conflicting message to those powers who will come face-to-face with the EU during these negotations, Subini answered in the affirmative.

“Yes, and if you read the document right now, it wouldn’t be a problem. But the document is open and as a country, we must send clear signals about what is acceptable. In this case, we are not going to legitimise the non-democratic powers in place at the ministerial level in Durban,” she said.

The Telegraph has a good editorial on the conference:

Boycott the United Nations Durban Review Conference

Durban II will be little more than a celebration of the alliance between anti-Western leftists and Islamists.

“…In fact, the decision reflects credit on Mr Obama. The Durban conference was an exercise in anti-Semitic racism directed at Israel; America stormed out half way through. This event promises more of the same: one of the most prominent attenders is President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad of Iran, the world’s most famous Holocaust denier. The steering committee is chaired by that well-known champion of human rights, Libya; Islamists and despots will play key supporting roles. If proof were needed of the conference’s hypocrisy, one need only read its programme of action. This includes a list of worrying trends, beginning, predictably, with Islamophobia. There is no reference to the racist atrocities perpetrated by Islamic Arab militias in east Africa; instead, the focus is on “neo-Nazi” ideologies.

Durban II will be little more than a celebration of the alliance between anti-Western leftists and Islamists. Countries that take civil rights seriously are right to stay away. Why is Britain not among them?…

NATO ships, helicopters hunt down 7 pirates

Victory!

Well… maybe not so much:

NATO forces boarded the skiff, where they found a rocket-propelled grenade, and interrogated, disarmed and released the pirates.
The pirates cannot be prosecuted under Canadian law because they did not attack Canadian citizens or interests and the crime was not committed on Canadian territory.

Um… two questions here:

1) Considering that ships of various countries took part in the chase; and the initial attack was on a Norwegian ship; why are they now talking only about Canadian law?

2) And considering that piracy is a CLASSIC example of a crime of “universal jurisdiction” under principles of public international law, how can it be that Canadian law does not allow prosecution?!

They really need to move this conference there.

How many times do we have to beat our heads against that brick wall before we decide that its not a good idea?

When will we just be done with all of the madness and boycott the UN in its entirety?

When we find a cure for the heartbreak of Liberal Mental Disorder……..

Germany to be the next country to announce it’s boycotting Durban?

Conflicting reports on Germany’s supposed boycott of Durban II

“…Germany has decided to boycott this week’s UN anti-racism conference, joining the United States and five other countries who will not attend it, UN human rights spokesman Rupert Colville said on Sunday.

However, Germany’s Foreign Ministry spokesman denied his nation has decided to pull out, saying it will announce its final decision on Sunday night.”

Of all the countries on earth, Germany should have led the boycott of the West from Durban II.

Antisemites meeting in Durban today:

“A parallel meeting to Durban II which was organized by the International Jewish Anti-Zionist Network, the International Coordinating Network on Palestine and the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) Committee, kicked off at a Geneva hotel Sunday, one day ahead of the United Nation’s conference on racism….

…A debate entitled ‘Israeli apartheid’ paid credit to Jimmy Carter’s book Palestine: Peace Not Apartheid, and political experience in the trade union movement in the combat against South Africa. The concept was vaunted as a valuable tool for political mobilization and solidarity….

There was debate on construction of a European resistance movement, based on the concept ‘We are all Hizbullah, we are all Hamas. The world stopped Nazism, the world stopped Apartheid, we will stop Zionism.’

OK, now I’m getting paranoid.

US, Canada, Australia, Italy with Berlusconi, some others, make sense.

Now Nations that castigate Israel at every turn, who deal with Hamas, who attempt to boycott Israel, counties who you would be certain would go, are not going.

Either the World woke up with some morality suddenly, or something is being set up that supporters of Israel will not like.

Or I’m just another paranoid crazy right winger.

I expect we’ll see a lot of these stories in the press. It would be dumb to ignore them, but it would also be churlish to comment that it would undoubtedly be used to bolster the militancy against the right. This in turn might have the opposite effect—instead of calming down that fringe of people, it might rile them up and get others to join them. Not a good idea.
Although, just noting from Zombie’s past photo essays, there was considerable hatred and threats from the left wing zealots—there wasn’t much in the press about anyone being arrested. We can speculate on what that might mean. One, perhaps the left wing fringe just likes to parade around and talk—paper tigers all. Or maybe the ones who were caught were sent to foreign prisons for torture. Or maybe even disappeared a la the South American way. Or…. maybe the press just didn’t print any articles about it.
I, for one, am just thinking about this. I don’t like fringe. Either on my rugs, my scarves, or my politics or in my country. fringe is unpredictable and a collector of dirt, parasites and crumbs. N’est pas?

I’m so glad to see this. Good for the leaders of these countries — and the people who hit them upside their heads with a cluebat. Sadly, they had to come to this decision after much rumination. Should have taken a fifteen minute briefing to have them saying “hell, no!”

147 Mikey_Dallas  Sun, Apr 19, 2009 11:45:21am

re: #116 Erik The Red

And BTW what the fuck are you inferring?

You see, once upon a time, there was a country called Nazi Germany. They were run by people who didn’t care for Jewish people. Now jump ahead many years. There have been these conferences in Durban, South Africa, where the people running it don’t care for Jewish people. If they held their conference in a place called “New Germany”, as in a “New” Nazi Germany, it would be, shall we say an interesting historical twist.

If you are suggesting I was saying that present day Germany is an anti-Semitic nation, then you would be misinterpreting WTF to what I was inferring.

148 restitutor orbis  Sun, Apr 19, 2009 11:58:41am
