Muslim Brotherhood Invited to Obama’s Egypt Speech?

World • Views: 4,137

No matter how you look at it, this seems like a stunningly bad idea: ‘Brotherhood’ Invited To Obama Speech By U.S.

A sign that the Obama administration is willing to publicly challenge Egypt’s commitment to parliamentary democracy: various Middle Eastern news sources report that the administration insisted that at least 10 members of the Muslim Brotherhood, the country’s chief opposition party, be allowed to attend his speech in Cairo on Thursday. The brotherhood is a Salafist/ Islamist party with branches in many countries, and it does not have a reputation for liberalism and has supported violent campaigns against Israel (and Egypt’s own government). It has deep roots in the region and traces its intellectual lineage to Sayyid Qutb, a top American-educated Islamic intellectual who was executed — or martyred — by the Egyptian government in 1966. The Brotherhood has direct links with Sunni groups like Hamas in the Palestinian territories.

(I’m putting a question mark in the title, because I haven’t seen solid confirmation of this report yet.)

UPDATE at 6/3/09 8:25:35 pm:

Well, it’s been confirmed that this horrible idea is a reality.

Khaled Hamza, editor of the Muslim Brotherhood Web site, confirmed to FOXNews.com that 10 members of the Brotherhood’s parliamentary bloc received official invitations to attend the speech.

The list includes Mohammed Saad el-Katatni, head of the parliamentary bloc.

Yes or No? ... not hard ...

Asked if members of the Muslim Brotherhood would be in the audience during tomorrow’s speech, there was a bit of hedging, with administration officials opting to say that the President wanted to speak to “the full range of political representation in Egypt and really across the Muslim world,” but not confirming the Muslim Brotherhood would be there. McDonough said that invitations were made not only by the State Department but the embassy in Cairo and the Egyptian government had a role in identifying people to attend.

CAIRO--Good news for political reformers and Islamists: In an unexpected bit of diplomatic choreography, several members of the Muslim Brotherhood have been invited to attend Barack Obama's speech in Cairo tomorrow. This is a small triumph for the many people upset that Obama's visit would simply affirm Hosni Mubarak's near-monopoly on political discourse here, and if reports are true that the invitation came after a push for Washington, suggests that Obama isn't putting on a show perfectly tailored to Mubarak's liking.

To the typical American, the Muslim Brothers may sound more sinister than they are: Dedicated to an Islamist society in Egypt, they are a badly weakened political party which--although linked to terrorism in past decades--now operates nonviolently in the Egyptian parliament, in what precious little breathing room Mubarak's security state allows.

... Oddly, it is not Islamists like Habib who are most upset with Obama right now. It is sectarian reformers like Ayman Nour, a 2005 presidential candidate who was imprisoned in 2006 and unexpectedly released earlier this year. I also met today with Nour, who told me that he, too, had been invited to Obama's speech--although he says he won't go and doesn't expect to applaud it. Tomorrow, I'll write more about Nour, perhaps the one Egyptian opposition figure Obama can get behind.

Seems like its real.

McClatchy is also reporting this.

The most sought-after tickets in Cairo this week are for Obama's speech tomorrow at Cairo University, and there's been widespread speculation about who would get invites.

Would the audience of 3,000 plus people include members of the Muslim Brotherhood? Would it include political dissidents who have challenged Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak’s 27-year rule? Would it include prominent bloggers who have exposed torture in Egypt?

The answer is: Yes.

Among those to receive invites are 10 of the 88 lawmakers associated with the Muslim Brotherhood; Ayman Nour, the Egyptian politician who spent more than three years in prison after challenging Hosni Mubarak for president in 2005; an Egyptian blogger who goes by the name Sand Monkey; Wael Abbas, another human rights blogger who has exposed torture in Egypt by posting shocking videos on his YouTube site, and Gamal Eid, head of the Arabic Network for Human Rights information.

Nour and the Muslim Brotherhood lawmakers are expected to be in the audience. So will Abbas and Sand Monkey.

“Even those who oppose Obama’s speech are going,” said Sand Monkey. “No one will miss this.”

Well, at least one person is planning to pass up the cherished invite.

Eid said he won’t be there. Why? Because another invitee is the Israeli ambassador to Egypt, and Eid said he didn’t want to be in the same room as a representative of what he called a “criminal” government.

Re: Obama and the Muslim Brotherhood...

Obama's Muslim-Outreach Adviser Resigns

The Muslim-outreach coordinator to the presidential campaign of Barack Obama has resigned amid questions about his involvement in an Islamic investment fund and various Islamic groups.
[advisor] Schiff Hardin

Mr. Asbahi said he did not want to distract Obama's campaign.

Chicago lawyer Mazen Asbahi, who was appointed volunteer national coordinator for Muslim American affairs by the Obama campaign on July 26, stepped down Monday after an Internet newsletter wrote about his brief stint on the fund's board, which also included a fundamentalist imam.
...
"I served on that board for only a few weeks before resigning as soon as I became aware of public allegations against another member of the board," Mr. Asbahi said in his resignation letter. "Since concerns have been raised about that brief time, I am stepping down...to avoid distracting from Barack Obama's message of change."

The eight-year-old connection between Mr. Asbahi and Mr. Said was raised last week by the Global Muslim Brotherhood Daily Report, which is published by a Washington think tank and chronicles the activities of the Muslim Brotherhood, a world-wide fundamentalist group based in Egypt. Other Web sites, some pro-Republican and others critical of fundamentalist Islam, also have reported on the background of Mr. Asbahi. He is a frequent speaker before several groups in the U.S. that scholars have associated with the Muslim Brotherhood.

The Justice Department named Mr. Said an unindicted co-conspirator in the racketeering trial last year of several alleged Hamas fund-raisers, which ended in a mistrial. He has also been identified as a leading member of the group in news reports going back to 1993.

But he hadn't really quit...

"Last Month, His Coordinator For Muslim Outreach, Mazen Asbahi, A Chicago Lawyer, Quit After Reports That He Belonged To The Board Of An Islamic Investment Fund That Included A Radical Imam. Asbahi Has Not Stopped Working On Behalf Of Obama, Though. He Appeared At The Luncheon To Say That Despite His Official Exit He Was Still '110%' Behind Obama And That He Was Participating In Campaign Conference Calls On Muslim Outreach." (Sean Higgins, "Muslim Outreach Proves A Tricky Issue For A Campaign Lauded As Multicultural," Investor's Business Daily, 8/26/08)

re: #20 JacksonTn

The invitations for Thursday`s speech came not from the US embassy, but from the sheikh of al-Azhar university, one of Egypt"s most prestigious centres of Islamic learning.

The university is jointly hosting the landmark Obama speech.

"The invitation came from Egyptian institutions, not the US administration," said Mohammed al-Katatni, head of the Muslim Brotherhood`s parliamentary bloc. "I expect to hear reassurances to the Muslim and Arab world, and I expect that he will push the democratic agenda."

Thanks for posting that.

US federal judge tosses warrantless wiretap cases
Published: 06.04.09, 00:11 / Israel News
A federal judge on Wednesday tossed out more than three dozen lawsuits filed against US telecommunications companies for allegedly helping the US government spy on Americans without warrants.

In addition, he ordered officials in Maine, New Jersey, Connecticut, Vermont and Missouri to halt their investigations of the telecommunication companies for their alleged participation in the once-secret surveillance of telephone calls and e-mail. (AP)

Barack Obama rejects Normandy trip to avoid offending Germany

To borrow one of Mandy's sayings, Oh, for f**k's sake.

It's especially bad that as one "American official" said,

"There was never any intention of The President going (to the Normandy memorial observance). We just went through the motions to placate Sarkozy."

I think Sarko is finding out what it feels like to be Bibi Netanyahu.

And the Germans haven't been "offended" by any American President going to Normandy since the first one who did (Ike, IIRC). I doubt that they're going to start now, especially not Merkel.

From all indications, The One just doesn't like reminders of what he regards as "American Triumphalism". Which means that his staff must work overtime scrambling to come up with excuses for his "default" behavior.

/At some point, doesn't reality have to intrude on his little self-admiring fantasyland?

57 states, Speaking Austrian in Austria, America one of the world larges muslim countryies (even if you assume we have 6 million which is way higher then PEW estimates of 1.8 million that would put us something like 35th largest)

Buried somewhere in that statement I suspect there is a nugget of truth. Dearborn, Michigan has, I believe, the largest number of Arabs outside the Middle East. Most (but not all) of whom are Muslims.

After passing through several 20-something speechwriters, a few Microsoft editing applications and whatever software is used in the teleprompter, it probably got a little garbled along the way.

**** UPDATE: Reader Alex sent the video, below, of HAMAS advisor, er . . . Obama advisor Robert Malley yukking it up with Muslims and attacking Israel. BARF. SCROLL DOWN.

Remember Robert Malley, the pro-HAMAS, rabidly anti-Israel foreign policy advisor whom Barack Obama claimed he fired from his campaign when Malley's extremist point of view came to light?

Well, not only was that a lie--Malley was NOT fired--but Malley has been making entreaties to HAMAS on behalf of Obama for months. I'm sure all the dummies--Jewish and otherwise--who voted for this man for President won't care about this latest news, since they weren't bothered by Rev. The Speech (the White House hopes) Heard 'Round the World: a Preview of President Obama's Speech to the Muslim World [sic]

Definitely, and even more wet behind the ears than Tut.

Is he expected to die young?

No, but his supporters are certain, certain, that anyone who isn't "one of them" wants to do him in- because they're all, well, just evil.

Is he encased in layers of gold?

Not unless you count all the money he's going to extract from us to pay for his economic brainstrorms.

Is there a curse that descends upon those who open the tomb of his political past?

Oh yeah, big time.

Muslim Brotherhood is not happy that a Jew was invited so they want a little discussion with parliament ...

The Muslim Brotherhood MPs had requested an emergency debate in parliament on the invitation of the Israeli ambassador, and university lecturers threatened to block Cohen from entering the campus. However, the protests were said to have subsided when the Muslim Brotherhood MPs found their names on the guest list as well, along with the name of recently released opposition activist Ayman Nour.

198 experiencedtraveller  Wed, Jun 3, 2009 4:25:55pm

There are several good reasons why Obama should invite the Muslim Brotherhood IF it is done for the right reasons. (And I have no confidence in it being done for the right reasons but theoretically...)

1. We can learn their names. The 'top 10' reaches fairly deep into a political party. There may be some newbies.

2. We can offer them carrots.

3. We can show them our sticks.

4. Diplomatically, we are the House. And the House never loses as long as people are playing the game.

Its a bit ugly, I know and completely contrary to my normal complete opposition to all forms of tyranny. But as Richard Nixon famously said "international relations is not like lunch at the club..."

I thought so too... it's lengthy, so here is the crucial point made for anyone who doesn't have time to read it...

From its first days the Bush administration made it clear that the onus for change in the Middle East was on the Palestinians: Until they put an end to terrorism, established a democratic government and accepted the basic parameters for a settlement, the United States was not going to expect major concessions from Israel.

Obama, in contrast, has repeatedly and publicly stressed the need for a West Bank settlement freeze, with no exceptions. In so doing he has shifted the focus to Israel. He has revived a long-dormant Palestinian fantasy: that the United States will simply force Israel to make critical concessions, whether or not its democratic government agrees, while Arabs passively watch and applaud. "The Americans are the leaders of the world," Abbas told me and Post Editorial Page Editor Fred Hiatt. "They can use their weight with anyone around the world. Two years ago they used their weight on us. Now they should tell the Israelis, 'You have to comply with the conditions.' "

re: #224 Dr. Shalit

Wow. I had just checked my e-mail and found this. It is an e-mail. I have no confirmation or evidence.

The author of this e-mail is said to be Dr. Emanuel Tanay, a well known and well respected psychiatrist.

A German's View on Islam

A man, whose family was German aristocracy prior to World War II, owned a number of large industries and estates. When asked how many German people were true Nazis, the answer he gave can guide our attitude toward fanaticism.

'Very few people were true Nazis,' he said, 'but many enjoyed the return of German pride, and many more were too busy to care. I was one of those who just thought the Nazis were a bunch of fools. So, the majority just sat back and let it all happen. Then, before we knew it, they owned us, and we had lost control, and the end of the world had come. My family lost everything. I ended up in a concentration camp and the Allies destroyed my factories.'

Today, we are told again and again by 'experts' and 'talking heads' that Islam is the religion of peace, and that the vast majority of Muslims just want to live in peace. Although this unqualified assertion may be true, it is entirely irrelevant. It is meaningless fluff, meant to make us feel better, and meant to somehow diminish the spectra of fanatics rampaging across the globe in the name of Islam.

The fact is that the fanatics rule Islam at this moment in history.

It is the fanatics who march. It is the fanatics who wage any one of 50 shooting wars worldwide.

It is the fanatics who systematically slaughter Christian or tribal groups throughout Africa and are gradually taking over the entire continent in an Islamic wave.

It is the fanatics who bomb, behead, murder, or honor-kill.

It is the fanatics who take over mosque after mosque.

It is the fanatics who zealously spread the stoning and hanging of rape victims and homosexuals.

It is the fanatics who teach their young to kill and to become suicide bombers.

The hard quantifiable fact is that the peaceful majority, the 'silent majority,' is cowed and extraneous.

Communist Russia was comprised of Russians who just wanted to live in peace, yet the Russian Communists were

Responsible for the murder of about 20 million people. The peaceful majority were irrelevant.

China's huge population was peaceful as well, but Chinese Communists managed to kill a staggering 70 million people.

The average Japanese individual prior to World War II was not a warmongering sadist. Yet, Japan murdered and slaughtered its way across South East Asia in an orgy of killing that included the systematic murder of 12 million Chinese civilians; most killed by sword, shovel, and bayonet.

And, who can forget Rwanda , which collapsed into butchery. Could it not be said that the majority of Rwandans were 'peace loving'?

History lessons are often incredibly simple and blunt, yet for all our posers of reason we often miss the most basic and uncomplicated of points:

Peace-loving Muslims have been made irrelevant by their silence..

Peace-loving Muslims will become our enemy if they don't speak up, because like my friend from Germany , they will awaken one day and find that the fanatics own them, and the end of their world will have begun.

Peace-loving Germans, Japanese, Chinese, Russians, Rwandans, Serbs, Afghans, Iraqis, Palestinians, Somalis, Nigerians, Algerians, and many others have died because the peaceful majority did not speak up until it was too late.

As for us who watch it all unfold, we must pay attention to the only group that counts; the fanatics who threaten our way of life.

I do not believe it matters whether the President visits Israel. What matters are President Obama's actions. Plus, I can think of some reprehensible recent visits to Israel by world figures. The Patent to Cubic Zirconium is owed by a US Corporation due to employment contract of a Jewish, German, Refugee. His Father earned the "EisenKreuz" 2nd Class as did 'Dolph.' His "EisenKreuz" allowed them to live in Germany, unmolested, for a couple of extra years - giving those who left, the time to leave. On the OTHER Side of the Equation, Amero-Germans were allowed a right of return to the Vaterland. A close friend of my father, Frederick - a/k/a "Ferdie" as in "The Horse" went back with his parents and was killed on the Russian Front. Such was the NSDAP Regime.

Ok, here's the plan:

Let's drop our friendship with the blossoming former Eastern bloc countries that are becoming decent democracies and cozy up to Putin as he rolls tanks into some of them.

Let's turn our back on our only ally in the middle east that at a moment's notice would take up arms by our sides. Not behind us, but standing shoulder to shoulder.

Let's rush US marshals to protect abortion clinics after a right wing extremist with multiple ties to the anti-abortion movement shoots a Dr at church (why not send the marshals to churches?), but let's just ignore the military recruiting sites because that shooter was just a lone gunman.

Let's watch N Korea launch a bunch more missiles. If they do it close enought to Independence Day, maybe they'll let us pull up a chair and BBQ.

Let's high-five Hugo Chavez, but be sure to not be involved in dissing Queen Elizabeth in her no-invite to Normandy.

Let's have our DHS chair claim publicly that the 9/11 hijackers came through Canada and that the Canadian border is just as dangerous as our border with Mexico.

Let's let Iran build a nuke, but disallow Israel from building civilization.

And that's just in the last month or so. And he says we ain't seen nothing yet? WE ARE SO SCREWED!
