Also, I think it would be more effective if you saw Manucher telling his sister he appreciates her stopping him from destroying Iran, and assuring her he's grateful for being made to see the light. Otherwise, I sort of wonder what the hell is going to happen when he gets out, and that would make me nervous if I were a sweet Iranian girl considering turning in my brother.

Yea. You have to figure they put this out in Feb, just prior to their own elections. Make sure the seed is well planted. Of course, I'm sure it's more of the same they've been hearing on a regular basis or at least since the last election.
But I am impressed that a significant number of Iranians see it for the BS it is. Whether they can do anything about it I guess remains to be seen.

Actually Sir, it's worse than that.
I dug up something I wrote on the subject nine years ago:
Humanity is not merely a physical condition, it is a state of mind. To be human is to be essentially rational and productive. The human mentality (or soul) looks upon the world, the land, the animals and plants, the natural forces, as things to be mastered for the benefit of himself and his posterity. On the other hand, the predator, or savage mentality does not seek to to master the world, but to be the master of men. The savage prefers not to sustain himself by his own effort, but to seize and consume the lives and property of others for material and spiritual sustenance. To the predator, justice consists of "getting away with it" -- those who rightfully resist the predator are to be punished or destroyed.

I agree, but for a different reason than you.
She's portrayed as the loving family member who has information and wants to do the right thing. Above all her concern is to protect her brother.
So they show her contacting the Ministry of Truth, and bingo-- everything works out just fine. Minitru even calls her to reassure her that the brother's safe and the judge is going to be lenient. The implication is that he's not even going to do jail time.
Please! In the real world, much less a regime like theirs, the brother will most likely be in for jail time. And over there? That poor kid is headed straight to the Ministry of Love for some time in Room 101 and a visit with the rats. And his whole family probably is too.

Indeed. Well I think he says "he will be released soon." I guess "soon" could be in relative terms, sentence him to 60 years and let him serve 10?

Yep. A totally whitewashed scenario, on top of everything else. But that's what propaganda does, I guess.
I'm trying to picture that same situation transferred into our culture. There are definitely times when we're expected to choose country over family, right? Including, I would think, if somebody in our family is working to overthrow the government. But I can't come to a hard equivalency. It's like a hall of mirrors, and I sink down into being so sad for those human beings making their life-changing decisions while events around them are moving a mile a minute.

Sure, 'soon' could be in relative terms, but since the film is propaganda intended to convince families and others to turn loved ones it, I think they intend to imply that he'll be home very soon. As in weeks. Also, the film is doubtless intended to be a message to members of putative resistance groups as well; the brother is portrayed as co-operating with the authorities once busted, and that's why everyone's lenient with him. As though all he'd have to say when busted is "Sorry, I didn't mean it, here's all the info I have-- can I be home for dinner?" and they'll smile and agree.
Bullshit. Dinner for the rats, maybe.
And yes, for us of course the prospect of turning in familiy members is appalling. For us it can't help but bring up thoughts of the Hitler Youth and informers in WWII, and the Stasi and the KGB elsewhere and later.
I'm sure the idea is also appalling for them, even if they don't have the same historical references as we do. It's human nature (usually) to hold family and loved ones closer than our impersonal love of country or principles. Or neighbours, for that matter. That's why we call the golden rule a 'rule'. There'd be no need to call it a 'rule' if we all instinctively followed it all the time.

Sure, 'soon' could be in relative terms, but since the film is propaganda intended to convince families and others to turn loved ones it, I think they intend to imply that he'll be home very soon. As in weeks. Right. It's the way of fascist governments. First to have an outside enemy that's really oppressing the people and then convince them of it. Iranian's people are still young enough to remember better days and not so easily convinced. I.e. 1984. You have to worry when the generations go on and it gets worse, like in Cuba or N.K.
It's the perfect propaganda film. I just shudder to think of how many there are.

Eeek. Not a fan. Not even as a movie. I thought it was really sappy if I'm recalling correctly. The woman's character was horrid.

Yes. I completely agree with you.
And particularly about the need for fascist or totalitarian governments to create an enemy. But it's never only an outside enemy; they crucially rely on the creation of a class of 'inside enemy' as well. The 'inside enemy' is often (not always) portrayed as collaborating with the outside enemy, but is always portrayed as anti-The Cause, traitorous, treasonous, treacherous, infinitely cunning and dangerous. Usually simultaneously portrayed as idiotic, buffoon-like, yet also capable of profound sneakiness and Machiavellian tactics.
It's necessary for an 'inside enemy' to be invented, because it keeps the populace on the jump, looking for these imaginary enemies (instead of at their real common one, their repressive government)--and it also serves as a way to identify and deliegitimise potential sources of resistance even before they form.
Hence the necessity for every totalitarian regime to be anti-intellectual, to target 'artists, intellectuals, and academics' -- and often scientists -- right away.

We have had similar situations in our culture, but radically less in degree. Think of HUAC. Or McCarthy. Or (coming closer) the internment of the Japanese during WWII-- a shameful episode and one we like to bury away.

Look at this disgusting pro-Khameini message board:

"When children start to throw temper tantrums and begin destroying the house, the parents can either let them and their 'friends' take over as they destroy themselves or they can crack the whip of order - or they can dispose of them altogether. Of course, there are many so-called parents that actually join in with their children in the effort and then other forces step in to deal with the situation directly. There are many human 'children' on this planet that are easily led to throw their temper tantrums as they are egged on to believe they are 'sovereign'. There are many on this board that think the same thing. The descendents of Adam are fallen creatures. This does not make them 'stained with original sin' - but it does mean that the inclination to 'forget' and to continue along the descending path exists. It also means that this descending path is the default path everyone follows until they choose to Return and Remember their Lord in all manifestations of the Lords Order, if capable. What's happening in Iran will not be resolved by giving in to 'the people', though that may in fact happen. If it does, you can be sure that the disintegration of 'the people' will continue and accelerate. The Law is being rejected by the people. They want to be 'free'. Their self-worshipping slavery and resulting self-destruction as they sink lower than even the animals ought to be educational to witness. Something to keep in mind is that when you have packs of wild animals attempting to overrun everything, typically its the human beings that put things back into balance. When that which stands above the human level acts, and it is acting right now, don't be suprised when you see large swaths of these wild human animals disposed of as things are restored to balance. "

I don't know whether to laugh or cry.
I have the same mixed emotions.
I laugh at the unmistakable arrogance of a near panic stricken regime that would contrive and half believe this conspiracy theory and then attempt to confuse and brainwash the citizens of their country.
I could cry for the frustrating and sickening audacity of being subjected to live even through one day of a contrived life with this regime of hubris and propaganda in Iran.
I am so thankful I was fortunate to be borne here and have lived my life in the U.S.of America.

Hate to say, but this video is probably the best example of why Obama should stay mum on supporting the green wave.
