Wednesday Afternoon Video: ‘The Astronomer’s Dream’

Video • Views: 2,477

A highly unusual animated short film by Malcolm Sutherland, who helpfully explains the plot:

When a hungry astronomer falls asleep while working on a problem, he discovers a solution not in outer space, but in the surreal food-chain of his subconscious mind.

Has anyone been over to JW today? RS is in a snit that the websites F***islam and F***allah have been redirecting traffic to his blog and is only now denying he had anything to do with them. If I rember correctly, this came up a week or so ago and he is

only now

denying any connection.

“For the record, I do not own the domain names f***allah.com and f***islam.com, and have nothing to do with them whatsoever. I have never engaged in such tactics and do not approve of them.”

This is also interesting.

“But they will be found out, and I am sure their identity will be interesting in many ways.”

re: #17 Stanley Sea

Interesting…I liked the animation. But, what does it MEAN?

The self as “that conscious thinking thing, (whatever substance, made up of whether spiritual, or material, simple, or compounded, it matters not) which is sensible, or conscious of pleasure and pain, capable of happiness or misery, and so is concerned for itself, as far as that consciousness extends”. It does not, however, ignore “substance”, writing that “the body too goes to the making the man.” The self is therefore a self-aware and self-reflective consciousness that is fixed in a body.

Simple.

Exciting news break!

Cattle truck catches fire on Interstate

/Slow news day here in the Valley

Ok, I have a traffic story. This past Sunday, I head down hill to Golden Colorado, closing day of our current show run, and on the way down, I pass one, thn and other one and then another one, three flatbeds, very poorly loaded, loaded full of crushed automobiles.

As I pass each one (mountain highway, four lanes, wide) I smell hot brakes and I see the loads could easily shift if the trucks too two hard of a turn.

So, the highway narrows to four lanes in a canyon at the end, for about 4 miles, a tight canyon. I come around a turn and 16 cars ahead of me is a FORTH flatbed, over on it’s side, crushed cars all over the highway, brakes on fire.

This idiot lost it.

What is normally a 35 minute drive took me 3 hours. By the time they turned us around in the canyon, back up, I cut across some peak to peak roads and come back down into the Denver area.

I got to work just in time to run the show. Missed doing all the other pre-show duties.

I told one of the state police to go back up the canyon and find those other three trucks and get them off the road before they could do any damage.

The driver was fine by the way.

One of my webtools gives the following result for f***cair.com

Initiating server query …
Looking up IP address for domain: fuckcair.com
The IP address for the domain is: 216.92.3.102
Connecting to the server on standard HTTP port: 80
[Connected] Requesting the server’s default page.
The server returned the following response headers:
HTTP/1.1 302 Found
Date: Wed, 04 Nov 2009 23:35:43 GMT
Server: Apache/1.3.26 (Unix) mod_perl/1.27 mod_ssl/2.8.9 OpenSSL/0.9.7e-p1
Location: ((redacted - link not welcome on LGF; hint: pamela))
Connection: close
Transfer-Encoding: chunked
Content-Type: text/plain
Query complete.

Now that’s an interesting result; whether it’s the truth, I don’t know.

For f***islam.com and for f***allah.com
the same tool indicates a different IP (98.124.198.1) and The server’s response did not contain the expected ‘Server:’ header to identify itself. Therefore, server’s identity can not be determined.

The webtool is Steve Gibson’s idserve.exe - available at his website.

Today’s Socialized Medicine from James Taranto:

Great Moments in Socialized Medicine

“X Factor judge Simon Cowell showed his more generous side [yesterday] when he gave £100,000 [about $160,000] to help save the life of a cancer-stricken youngster,” reports London’s Daily Mail:

The pop Svengali donated the money for 18-month-old Sophie Atay—from Birtley, Gateshead—to fly to the US for pioneering treatment at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Hospital in New York.

He acted after learning the youngster’s family launched a last-ditch appeal for £500,000 to pay for the treatment last week after they were told Sophie was suffering from a rare form of neuroblastoma and needed treatment within days.

Alexandra Burke, last year’s X Factor winner, broke the news to Sophie’s mum Karine, 33, on the telephone today that Simon had now dipped into his own pocket to top up the total to the necessary amount.

Wait, we’re confused! Why does a little English girl have to come all the way to the U.S. to get medical care, and why does this Cowell fellow have to pay for it? We thought Britain had free medical care!

But wait, another Daily Mail story reports on what happens to older people who get cancer in Britain:

Alarming research is showing that elderly cancer patients are missing out on the breakthroughs in chemotherapy and surgery that have dramatically improved the outcome of younger patients.

In fact, up to 15,000 elderly people with cancer in the UK are dying prematurely every year when compared to the rest of Europe and the U.S., according to a report published by the North West Cancer Intelligence Service (NWCIS) which compiles cancer statistics… .

A major concern is that the NHS Cancer Plan, introduced in 2000 to improve cancer survival in the UK, has a cut-off point at 70. This results in hospitals having less interest in the elderly. “Yet half of all those diagnosed with cancer are over 70,” says Dr Tony Moran, NWCIS research director. “It’s an area that has been grossly neglected… .”

Yet according to former Enron adviser Paul Krugman, “In Britain, the government itself runs the hospitals and employs the doctors. We’ve all heard scare stories about how that works in practice; these stories are false.”

I say keep rubbing that in. Maybe someone lurking might stumble on a clue. Or maybe it’ll just make them angry. Either way, WIN!

I’m still struggling to understand what they’re thinking. It just doesn’t make sense to me.

Link for Steve Gibson’s free webtool, idserve.exe - so anyone interested can check. Gibson is one of the whitehat guys, ie, site is safe.

Exciting news break!

Cattle truck catches fire on Interstate

/Slow news day here in the Valley

“The cattle were OK,” Thorpe said.

Thorpe said the Freightliner had extensive damage from the fire. The driver’s name was unavailable.

Just OK? I guess you can’t expect quality BBQ using Diesel fuel and tire rubber.

38 users in this thread, we ought to be having a rollicking conversation. Why is everyone so shy?

That was wierd…let me try that again.

What am I supposed to do? Pimp my latest blog entry or something?

That’s what that sound is? I thought it was flock of geese in a bar fight.

The problem is no one is thinking. It’s a movement without leadership or direction. Any loony fringe that wants in, gets in. They each have a little bitty piece of the pie; and then they use whatever numbers are at the events to promote their own viewpoint. Take a look at HotAir, Michelle Malkin -mob mentality. No one is thinking.

What caught fire?

left rear dualies…I could have easily lost the whole rig…I used the whole extinguisher and a lot of on board water to put it out

OK, I see you have some down-dings, but I thought it was funny, primarily, I guess, because in my family, I am the only person who can parallel park, and I can park anything from a compact car to a Chevy Tahoe.

The woman I jested with is also an accomplished driver, and secure enough in herself to laugh at the joke.

By that I mean was it the tire, leaked brake fluid or the rim.

a seal on the caliper blew, the inside tire itself was charred…had it fixed in Jackson no problem
