‘When the Captain’s Crazy, It’s Time for a New Ship’

Politics • Views: 3,034

Michele Bachmann’s (R-Mars) chief of staff is bailing out, and declines to say why.

The aide who helped turn Rep. Michele Bachmann into a controversial mainstay of cable news has informed colleagues that she’s quitting — just as the firebrand Republican congresswoman prepares for her biggest media moment yet.

Multiple sources have confirmed that Michelle Marston, a veteran Hill aide, is leaving Bachmann’s office.

In an e-mail exchange with POLITICO, Marston declined to say why she’s going.

“I’m just not talking about it, and frankly I don’t think there’s a story here,” Marston wrote. “Now, the thousands of people calling our office to tell us [they’re] coming to Capitol Hill tomorrow — that’s a story.”

Marston was referring to the prolific Bachmann’s latest political brainstorm, a “house call” on the Capitol Thursday to which she’s invited Fox News viewers and other conservatives to march with her through House office buildings, “find members of Congress, look at the whites of their eyes and say, ‘Don’t take away my health care.’”

Oh, for Pete’s sake. Meanwhile, anonymous sources muttered:

A conservative Republican House member, speaking on the condition of anonymity, suggested that Bachmann’s views — and her willingness to state them — make it hard for her to keep staff. “When your captain’s crazy, it’s time to find a new ship,” the lawmaker said.

UPDATE at 11/4/09 5:11:20 pm:

Judge Andrew Napolitano warns Michele to watch out for Nancy Pelosi and her schemes, because she controls the capital and might do anything at all to stop the populist glory of Michele’s “house call.”

Just follow the Constitution. That would be the easiest way to get rid of the NeoCons and war-drummers. Unfortunately, I think it is a long-shot for the Repubs to embrace our founding documents. This is the party of Lincoln, after all. Ron Paul has provided some inspiration for us, though.

Rolled off of their ship, and here's what they had to say
"We're callin' everyone to ride along to another shore
We can laugh our lives away and be free once more"

But no one heard them callin', no one came at all
'Cause they were too busy watchin' those old raindrops fall
As a storm was blowin' out on the peaceful sea
Seventy-three men sailed off to history

Ride, captain ride upon your mystery ship
Be amazed at the friends you have here on your trip
Ride captain ride upon your mystery ship
On your way to a world that others might have missed

I answered your "what are the tea party folks thinking" comment with this, and it seems appropriate here, too, so reposting this from previous thread:

The problem is no one is thinking. It's a movement without leadership or direction. Any loony fringe that wants in, gets in. They each have a little bitty piece of the pie; and then they use whatever numbers are at the events to promote their own viewpoint. Take a look at HotAir, Michelle Malkin -mob mentality. No one is thinking

The neocons are conspiring on how they can get control of the U.S. military, which is their ultimate prize, right now in the Obama years.

I think their strategy right now is to form and infiltrate progressive think tanks so they can kind of cross over work with the dems while they have the levers of power.

Neoconism inevitably leads to higher taxes/debt to pay for the adventures, plus the erosion of liberties such as the Patriot Act which led to a myriad of arrests without warrants. It’s pure fantasy that they’re pushing.

It's times like these when a detached, slightly bemused, attitude is the more healthy one.

Sort of like watching the Titanic sinking for four hours in slow motion.

Perhaps we should wish many more "victories" upon the "conservatives" in the same vein of NY-23. And then the GOP leadership might figure out just how to use the life preservers the rest of us have been throwing to them all along.

35 Only The Lurker Knows  Wed, Nov 4, 2009 4:55:42pm

Time to call it a day (Iron Fist Rule). Been perhaps too much of a lurker, but gave my opinion where I felt it was (I believe) required.

Play Nice and keep it above the belt.

36 Sharmuta  Wed, Nov 4, 2009 4:55:53pm

Speaking of bachmann's tea party protest at the Capital tomorrow:

A few moments ago Fox News host Andrew Napolitano told Bachmann that "a friend in the American intelligence community" suggested to him that Nancy Pelosi might mount some sort of Capitol Hill security clampdown to stop the Tea Party event. (The idea apparently is that Pelosi would instruct Capitol security to become so onerous that, in essence, no one would be able to get into the building. Note to Tea Partiers: The Capitol building is not a 2nd Amendment zone.) [Ha! -ed.]

Not surprisingly Bachmann rose to the bait, telling Napolitano that it would be a "big mistake" for Pelosi to use her power to sabotage the Tea Party.

I love the hyperbolic BS of Judge Nappy- a friend "suggested" their might be a clampdown. This is the sort of kookspiracy crap that will get picked up by other bloggers and kookspiracy freaks and morph into an outrageous outrage that has no basis in reality.

The Left hasn't always been so anti-military. Before the late 1960s Democrats such as FDR, Truman, Kennedy, LBJ, and Henry Jackson were unafraid to take military action if they felt it was necessary. It was ultimately after Vietnam that the party really changed their stance toward the military.

In a way I hope the "neoconservatives" become more influential within the Democratic Party. As someone who votes Democrat most of the time, at the very least it would give me a few more people to relate to.

Uhhh

So because someone posted Fox News behaving poorly, it's unreliable? Does that mean that they're unreliable at being a terrible news network and they're secretly very ethical and responsible? I fear we are entering a logic wormhole from which there is no escape, with floating grandfather clocks, eyeballs, and Rod Serlings all around us.

Fox News is unreliable as a news network. When they rise to the level of dangerous incitement, that becomes news. Just like it would be news if Shepard Smith were to get into a shoving match with Sean Hannity on live cable. Their irresponsible actions are newsworthy.

I think what you are seeing is a big difference between Democrats and The Left. The Left is generally anti-war. But the Democratic party wants the middle, and if Republicans start going isolationist (because the wrong guy is commander in chief) and they cede the pro-military platform to dems... then that's more centrism and reasonable voters they have abandoned.

Networks and News Organizations are responsible to their stockholders. I don't think Fox is any different than CNN or MSNBC or any other.

Isolationism as I recall it was something that the old right was big on. It was guys like Arthur Vandenberg, Thomas Dewey, Dwight Eisenhower, and Wendell Willkee who helped make the right and Republican Party more internationalist like it is now. The latter three guys as social liberals and fiscal moderates would be called RINOs today probably. Ron Paul I know has cited Bob Taft as a personal hero of his and it's a big reason why I've never been a fan of his. When they say a Democrat last won the district, they're talking about the geographic error not the number. John McHugh the previous Congressman was elected in 1993. Not to nitpick you but it is accurate to say that district has been represented by a Republican for a long time.

Isn't protectionism more something we use when we're discussing trade issues. From what I remember reading the big economic issue of the 19th century was the tariff issue. You had Democrats especially those from agricultural states who opposed the tariffs and Republicans from industrial states who supported it because they felt it was beneficial to building home grown industry.

Someone’s in the Kitchen With Michelle: The Secret Ingredient Is Politics

ALTON BROWN, the host of “Iron Chef America,” fell into the turnip patch just before the show began taping several scenes outside the White House in late October. (The best stuff always happens off camera.)

On the episode, which will open the show’s new season Jan. 3 on the Food Network, two pairs of chefs will compete: Cristeta Comerford, the White House executive chef, and Bobby Flay go up against the combined forces of Mario Batali and Emeril Lagasse.

In a collision of politics, cooking and popular culture, Michelle Obama will reveal the secret ingredient that the chefs must use in their televised cook-off: anything that grows in the White House garden.

Backed by some of the most powerful members of the Senate, a little-noticed provision in the healthcare overhaul bill would require insurers to consider covering Christian Science prayer treatments as medical expenses.

I understand that part - about the tasting of the cakes and food... that's partially why I love Good Eats more than any of the other cooking shows - not only does Alton do interesting recipes and shows the science behind the food, but takes the time to show different outcomes, particularly on baking depending on the mix of ingredients.

The cake shows are interesting because of the artistry involved.. the mrs is big into those because she loves baking, but doesn't have the time or patience to do the decorating.

Old Computer Humor, from "The Programmer's Quick Guide To The Languages"
Task: Shoot yourself in the foot.

C: You shoot yourself in the foot and then no one else can figure out what you did.

C++: You accidentally create a dozen instances of yourself and shoot them all in the foot. Providing emergency medical assistance is impossible since you can't tell which are bitwise copies and which are just pointing at others and saying, "That's me, over there."

COBOL: Using a COLT 45 HANDGUN, AIM gun at LEG.FOOT, THEN place ARM.HAND.FINGER on HANDGUN.TRIGGER and SQUEEZE. THEN return HANDGUN to HOLSTER. CHECK whether shoelace needs to be re-tied.

Concurrent Euclid: You shoot yourself in somebody else's foot.

dBase: You buy a gun. Bullets are only available from another company and are promised to work so you buy them. Then you find out that the next version of the gun is the one that is scheduled to actually shoot bullets.

FORTH: Foot in yourself shoot.

FORTRAN: You shoot yourself in each toe, iteratively, until you run out of toes, then you read in the next foot and repeat. If you run out of bullets, you continue with the attempts to shoot yourself anyways because you have no exception handling capability.

HyperTalk: Put the first bullet of gun into foot left of leg of you. Answer the
result.

LISP: You shoot yourself in the appendage which holds the gun with which you shoot yourself in the appendage which holds the gun with which you shoot yourself in the appendage which holds the gun with which you shoot yourself in the appendage which holds the gun with which you shoot yourself in the appendage which holds the gun with which you shoot yourself in the appendage which holds...

My first PC was a Superbrain, in 1983. At the time, an amazing machine - and cheap. Zilog Z80 processor, floppy disks that held 170 Kb (Kb, not Mb !!!)

[Link: www.old-computers.com...]

For hundreds of dollars extra you could get a hard-disk with 10 Mb capacity.

I ran it with a daisywheel printer that chugged along slowly, one page per minute, and cost only $4000.

To hell with the cost. As solo consultant I had better equipment than the big firms had, and to this day I don't think things have advanced that much.

I earned megabucks from that set of kit, the ability to work fast, churn out reports overnight.

I remember writing a position paper that led directly to the privatisation of British Telecom on that old Superbrain.

And, the recent episode with the car wreck, the damage to Buddy's vehicle was not negligible. The thing to remember with that one is that time is short on the show and things get cut that do not advance the dreama of getting the cake to the venue. Cops don't count.

"What was vile has become precious. What is now precious was never vile. I have always known the vile as precious: for what is vile I know not at all.

"What was cruel has become merciful. What is now merciful was never cruel. I have always overshadowed Jonas with My mercy, and cruelty I know not at all. Have you had sight of Me, Jonas My child? Mercy within mercy within mercy. I have forgiven the universe without end, because I have never known sin.

"What was poor has become infinite. What is infinite was never poor.
I have always know poverty as infinite: riches I love not at all.
Prisons within prisons within prisons. Do not lay up for yourselves
ecstasies upon earth, where time and space corrupt, where the minutes
break in and steal. No more lay hold on time, Jonas, My son, lest the

Dear Friend of November 5,

Thank you for signing up to the November 5 list. After the 2008 election, the Nader for President 2008 campaign did a survey and found that single payer healthcare was the most important issue for 2009. You may be wondering where we've gone and what we've been doing. Over the past months, we have joined the fight for single payer.

I ate squirrel once. I was about 12. Had just shot it. Asked my Dad if he wanted any and he said, "As far as I'm concerned a squirrel is just a rat with a furry tail." I considered that analogy while I ate a few bites, then determined that Dad's advice was about 100% dead on every time.

Next time, try cooking the squirrel first. After gutting it, of course.

Yes. Merton. Here is more Merton, from "The Hidden Ground of Love"

***

It seems to me that the basic problem is not political, it is apolitical and human. One of the most important things to do is to keep cutting deliberately through political lines and barriers and emphasizing the fact that there is another dimension, a genuine reality, totally opposed to the fictions of politics; the human dimension which politics pretend to arrogate entirely to themselves. This is the necessary first step along the long way toward the perhaps impossible task of purifying, humanizing and somehow illuminating politics themselves. Is this possible? Art least we must try to hope that, otherwise all is over. But politics as they now stand are hopeless.

Hence the desirability of a manifestly non-political witness, non-aligned, non-labeled, fighting for the reality of man and his rights and needs in the nuclear world in some measure against all alignments."

In your post 364 last night on the

"Hoffman accuses ..." thread

you effectively called me a racist. My post 424 on that thread last night refers.

I have asked for an apology for that slur.

I am still waiting.

Effectively?

#1 Keep issues you may have on the thread where they are being discussed.

#2 Look up words you don’t understand in the dictionary before using them.

I’ll help you with this one:

Bigot : a person obstinately or intolerantly devoted to his or her own opinions and prejudices

On that thread, you clearly showed the classic signs of an intolerant bigot in your wild and broad allegations against ACORN. That you kept repeating the same things over and over again shows that you were “obstinately and intolerantly devoted” to your opinions.

That the group is associated with African American would further fit the common usage of bigot as “one who regards or treats the members of a group (as in racial or ethnic group) with hatred and intolerance. That fits as well.

So nope, no apology deserved or given, nor did any other posters have a problem with my comment, in fact, it earned 7 + dings.

For the record, the poster who challenged me to violence was rewarded, I was severely down dinged for noting that doing so was "retarded." Mandy then ironically asked me "What the fuck do you care about language," before expressing her amusement over the dogpile.

Then she goes on to savagely abuse a new Lizard, purportedly because of his nic, as follows:

So how many other states have legalized medicinal marijuana? Didn't know that referendum had passed in Maine. Good to hear. Shame gay marriage didn't as well.

For the past several weeks, Maine has been subjected to the most scaremongering, dishonest campaign ever, by the Yes on 1 crowd.

My main issue with the cake shows is they never talk about how delicious the cake is. They don't even tell you what flavor cake they're making. Nobody eats it or even tastes it. It just looks like a robot or a race car. It doesn't have any appeal to me anyways but the cake shows are always on. I don't even really check anymore.

I dislike the way they never show the creative process. They show the interior of the "design department" (i.e. the desk with paper and pens and markers) but nobody actually draws anything to design the cake, they just cut right to the reality show drama trash. I'm thinking of the main Assholes Make Cakes show, not the competition shows.

Actually, I think he does understand English, but he doesn't like to speak in public. Ichiro apparently addresses the AL team just before the All-Star game and injects some interesting swear words into his diatribe against the NL. Isn't Matsui about to become a free agent? I'm not picking on you...casinos have been a good paycheck for some formally washed up bands...it's a circuit they do and it's moderately lucrative for them, because the gate is already in the house...you knew that tho

Not all washed up bands though, seats for Cher start at $150 for nose bleed seats and go way up. I prefer the Legends show across the street when I'm in Vegas, always a great Elvis impersonator, and a lot cheaper.

If you read and actually comprehended my comments on that thread you would know that I was not defending ACORN against anything other than wild and unsubstantiated allegations. Poorly reasoned at that.

And don't presume to give me a reading assignment, I know all about ACORN and Cloward-Piven Strategy.

Bagua explained himself clearly, you just weren't listening. You just wanted to lambast him for not going after ACORN on charges he did not feel have merit. Iraqis give up bomb sniffing dogs in favor of dowsing rods. WTF?

BAGHDAD — Despite major bombings that have rattled the nation, and fears of rising violence as American troops withdraw, Iraq’s security forces have been relying on a device to detect bombs and weapons that the United States military and technical experts say is useless.

The small hand-held wand, with a telescopic antenna on a swivel, is being used at hundreds of checkpoints in Iraq. But the device works “on the same principle as a Ouija board” — the power of suggestion — said a retired United States Air Force officer, Lt. Col. Hal Bidlack, who described the wand as nothing more than an explosives divining rod.

[Link: www.nytimes.com...]

From Wired:

...the Iraqi government paid around $85 million for [about 1500 of] the devices...

The seller's website states a capability for:

Substances Recognition:

Black Powder, Used Weapons, Fireworks, all types of Ammunition,
Ammonium Nitrate (ANFO-ANNIE), Chinese Czech and Russian Semtex, Plastic (C4, C1, ...), Dynamite, RDX, TNT, Nitroglycerine, Tetryl, Grenades, Mines, Amphetamine, Cocaine, Crack, Heroine, Marijuana, Cannabis, Morphine, Ivory, Human research, Bank notes, …

Additional substance Available (possibility of encoding new substances)

This at a distance up 650 meters, or a depth of 30 meters through water, or ten meters of earth. A remarkable, even incredible, achievement of Lebanese engineering, no doubt!

I was objecting to “wild and broad allegations against ACORN” as in false and unsubstantiated, based upon inference and conjecture. In other words, false. That does not equal defending ACORN from legitimate charges.

Secondly, You stated I was “vilifying other posters who mention it in a negative light” which is a clear allegation, and a specious one at that as I clearly demonstrated is numerous comments on that thread.

That you failed to make and support your points on the actual thread suggests that you too are suffering from bigotry.

re: #577 abolitionist

Let me answer the point you made; ACORN was indeed formed to foment social unrest. It is a far-left organization that cannot be trusted. That said, in order to take them down, we need to ensure that our accusations against them will stick. They don't need to result in actual criminal convictions, but they do have to have enough merit that ACORN cannot effectively refute them. What Bagua was saying os that the charges you made won't meet that threshold.

Search for bigot on *this* thread, please. I had made no reference to a prior thread - YOU did.

re: #437 Bagua

Your specific allegation against me in the previous discussion on ACORN, for which I requested an apology, were :

"let's throw them all in jail, who needs charges and trials when we are going on our hunches, after all, they're all Blacks, right, they must be guilty" - that seems to sum up your view.

That is effectively calling me a racist.

That is why I requested an apology. Your remarks seemed to me to go way outside House Rules here.

So - any chance of an apology ?

(and by the way - one of the matters I had been posting about was the large-scale embezzlement of ACORN funds by the brother of ACORN founder Wade Rathke - and the subsequent cover-up.

And you know very well that Rathke is not black.

re: #609 Bagua

You seem to suggest that it is unfair - or bigoted - to attack ACORN, that there is no proper foundation to the attacks.

As I had said in the previous thread - how come the entire Dem party in Congress kicked them under the bus, pronto, if criticism of ACORN is unfair ?

I just came across this web page on the history of ACORN, I apologise if it has been poted before. Seems to me quite a rap-sheet. Or is this all just racism too ?

Good site. Horowitz has some special insight with respect to commie/leftist ideologies --youthful exuberance which he outgrew. (Former commie)

As I'm almost certain has already been mentioned, the Democrats through ACORN under the bus because it was politically expedient, not because they actually felt ACORN was some kind of organized fraud. The public perception of ACORN, even if it was potentially the wrong perception, had turned negative.

and when I was a callow youth I was proposed for chairmanship of London Young Socialists. Now I am an unreconstructed Thatcherite in terms of fiscal/economic issues, having fought for the cause, but with fairly liberal views on social issues. Which is why I strongly object to being called a racist by Bagua.

re: #584 Dark_Falcon

"social unrest" - how so?. Riots in chicago?... do you mean it's the poorest in society trying to give each other a leg up on the ladder by agitating peacefully against the status quo?
