Back from the game...we had four tickets (wife's boss's boss gave them to her to review the club level food services in Oakland)...so we found a father-daughter going to buy tickets and gave them our extras. Father was grateful--then when we got inside he chased me down and said, "Hey! These are club-level tickets! My daughter (she was about 12) loves basketball and plays on her school team! We usually sit in the nose-bleed seats!"...it felt good to save the guy a few bucks and put them close enough to the floor to hear the players on the court.

Me, I prefer to watch pro ball on TV. The court is so small compared to the players that it just looks kind of silly live. Still, we got free beers because one of the managers recognized my better half (works for her in baseball season), and we enjoyed the first half before deciding to go to dinner.

And on a comforting aside, I was quite glad to get an email from a very good friend of mine early tonight linking to a Forbes blog post exposing truthers amongst the 'conservatives' of our day. I mentioned that the piece didn't mention that the good ole JBS was a cosponsor of CPAC this year and that Buckley would be doing a high rotation spin over this in his grave. My friend is as conservative as they come. I also gave a shout out to LGF in my response to him. This, at least in his realm of influence, illustrates how important it is to share what you can to your friends who can also influence opinion. Keep telling who you know, and who respect your views, what's actually going on. It makes a difference. One less bad crazy makes this world a little bit better.

Thankfully my friend is a critical thinker. That makes a world of difference. BTW, for the more ideologically oriented in these parts; critical thinking can occur amongst both liberals and conservatives. I've seen it in action. As a hybrid myself it seems to occur among those willing to entertain that others who disagree might actually have a point. That's why I frequent these parts. This site exhibits a diversity of opinion that shakes me up. I like that. It makes me consider views that I might not otherwise consider.

Sorry. You mentioned that "Darkness is not the opposite of light, it is the absence of light". and that is an Augustinian viewpoint. Serious question though, as you are a translator of various texts.

You, a mutt?

Try this:

Baptized Methodist. Brought up in that church until the age of six, when, as my parents were about to drop me off at Sunday school, I blurted out, "Here we go, another two hours of anxiety."

That scared my parents into becoming Unitarians. In which company, where, when they pray, it's addressed "to whom it may concern", I spent my formative years being taught that all faiths were pretty much the same. Went to a lot of cross-confessional services, of which my favorite was the Greek Orthodox, because it was the Sixties and I thought incense and beards were cool.

By the time I was in seventh grade I was a Marxist Buddhist and trying to attain enlightenment by reading Das Kapital and staring for hours at lighted candles.

Then a long, long wannabe atheist phase - only some little voice kept telling me I was full of shit.

Now I'm a happy Catholic who goes to Buddhist meditation retreats and reads both Augustine and C.G. Jung in the originals, for pleasure.

I should be put in a zoo someplace.

re: #86 Slumbering Behemoth

Again, no apology necessary. I am goofing. On the lack of commas.

Serious question though, as you are a translator of various texts.

I've read The Iliad and The Odyssey on my little PalmPilot. Both versions used Roman names instead of Greek names (i.e. Jove and Juno rather than Zeus and Hera). Is this common?

In earlier translations, very. Doubtless you had something from the public domain like Chapman. If you like the older diction, there ain't nothin' wrong with that. I can give specific recommendations if you want to read Homer in newer translations with notes and stuff.

Speaking of public domain, W.B. Yeats just went out of copyright protection. I'm thinking of putting all his stuff up on Kindle and making a killing in the electronic Irish lit market. Next time we talk I'll be on my private jet to the Aran Islands.

Cato, now I know why we get along. A fellow theological mutt. I wouldn't dare to compete with you. Playing 'how many churches have you belonged to' isn't a game I see as productive. I've run the gamut too. Christ the Lord is enough for me, knowing full well that Christ the Lord is full of baggage that church history has added to all of our histories.

Certainly from the public domain, though I don't recall from what source. It was at least eleven years ago, and I was downloading every free thing I could read at the time. Well, every free thing that appealed to me, anyway.

I can give specific recommendations if you want to read Homer in newer translations with notes and stuff.

I would dig that, as I am sure many others would. Thanks for the response, Cato.

I joined the German version of netflix video rental and am damn pleased, ten euros (around $13.50 at today's rate) a month - less than what you pay for a TV license fee - and the turnaround time between sending a video back and getting a new one in the mail is usually no more than two days. They make one person manage 7 rows of used furniture and electronics, all by himself, including hauling the stuff out to the curb, putting more on the floor, helping customers and pricing smaller appliances and electronics. Oh, we get a half hour for lunch.

I basically like the job, but I'll say this, the staffing and management style is a throwback to "Scrooge: "What, you want a day off... bahahahaha..." way of running a business.

US man charged with threatening Obama in Web poem
By ASSOCIATED PRESS
20/02/2010 05:30

A Kentucky man has been charged with posting a poem threatening US President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama on a white supremacist Web site.

US Secret Service Special Agent Stephan M. Pazenzia said Johnny Logan Spencer Jr., 27, of Louisville wrote and posted the poem, titled "The Sniper," on a page called NewSaxon.org. The site is described as an "Online Community for Whites by Whites." The poem was posted in August 2007, according to an arrest affidavit.

US Magistrate Judge Dave Whalin on Friday ordered Spencer released on $25,000 bond, but kept under house arrest at a family member's home. He's charged with making threats against the president and threatening to kill or injure a major candidate for the office of the president.

The poem describes a gunman shooting and killing a "tyrant" later identified as the president, setting off panic in the wake of the fatal shot being fired.

We should go out drinking!

I was in Indy for a seminar and during lunch I went wandering with a buddy through some stores. We walked into a national chain clothing store and he walks back into the kids dept. and starts moving racks around. An employee comes over asking him what he thinks he's doing and he goes into a rant. "Mr. whatever from corporate is on his way in and his plane just landed. This area was supposed to be the new display test and nothing has been fucking moved! Where the hell is your manager? Never mind, this rack goes here, that one goes there, we need to get those clothes off that wall and switch them with these. We're going to need help, go get the people in jr's to get their asses over here and get moving. We have less than 30 mins to get this shit done!" Then we walked out while they prepared for their corporate inspection.

When I worked for Chili's years ago, we would go out as a group to dance clubs. Always ran into some "spunky" girl. I would tell her I was a dishwasher. Then she would ignore me. But I never let it end there. I would go into the benifits of being a dishwasher and generally ended the conversation by telling the girl "And people leave so much food on their plates, you get to eat all night long." Oh, I had really long hair at the time so I looked like a scumbag. Heh.

UK human rights watchdog demands torture probe
By ASSOCIATED PRESS
20/02/2010 13:35

LONDON — The British government's human rights watchdog has asked the justice secretary to conduct an urgent independent investigation into allegations that the government was complicit in the torture of Britons held abroad.

The Equality and Human Rights Commission said Saturday that it had written to Justice Minister Jack Straw to complain that the government has not done enough to assure the public that the claims against British spy agencies are unfounded.

It said that there are more than 20 allegations — including allegations reported by the United Nations — of British complicity in torture during interrogations abroad.

Britain's MI5 has been heavily criticized for ignoring human rights issues after it was revealed that it knew about terrorism suspect Binyam Mohamed's torture in US custody.

Threats against people generally aren't considered crimes. The President is a special case, and threats made in that case are actually prosecutable offenses. But for everyone else, threats alone won't land you in jail. (There are, of course, exceptions, but they're rare.)

Typically, the police go and have a stern discussion with the threatener - and a record of the complaint is logged.

But short of action, speech is given wide latitude.

It did say "major presidential candidate."

I think there must be more that isn't reported in the article. Even in cases involving threats against the President, the Secret Service is required to investigate, but arrests are rare. It's usually sufficient to point out to the offender the nature of their actions, and to make them aware that they've been identified. They go on a watch list, and that's normally the end of the story. If they arrested even a quarter of those making discernible threats against the President, there would have been tens of thousands of people jailed just in the last ten years or so.

That this guy was actually charged and placed under house arrest bespeaks something more serious than the ordinary Web rant.

That's certainly true. But they also don't like to waste their time with idle rants, of which thousands appear on the Web every single day. For them to proceed all the way to formal charges, and to have the suspect placed under house arrest, suggests that there's something more to the story than simply posting an inflammatory poem, or more to the poem itself than what's alluded to.

Guy Branum, a columnist for the Daily Californian, said agents searched his off-campus apartment Monday, the same day Chelsea Clinton's mother, Hillary Rodham Clinton, visited the university for a meeting on foster care.

Branum wrote a satirical attack on Chelsea Clinton. The column, which appeared Thursday, was meant to be satirical. It was intended to rally spirit before the University of California- Stanford football game.

The agents checked for weapons , Branum said Tuesday. They also had him sign a release giving them access to his medical records, he said.

He said he gave two agents permission for the search after the agents threatened to detain him while getting a search warrant if he didn't.

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. The situation in Niger remains fluid; the African Union and UN wants to see the former president returned to power, even though the guy was busy turning himself into el presidente for life and was essentially overstaying his welcome in power after changing the law in his favor.

The military junta has rallied the people to its cause, and says that it will hold elections:

The junta has vowed to turn Niger into "an example of democracy" after Tandja stayed in office past his legal mandate, which expired in December. But the country's new rulers have not said how long they will hold power and some worry the move could increase the uranium-rich country's isolation.

The leader of the junta, Salou Djibo, is claimed to be a little-known commander, but he apparently has done peacekeeping work in the African Union and UN.

The problem here is that the UN is busy hoping for a return to the status quo, even though that situation was one that deprived Niger residents their rights.

The best thing that Djibo and the junta can do is call for new elections swiftly and do what it can to restore order; Tandja was a piece of work.

I found this interesting:

Tandja first rose to power in democratic elections in 1999 that were organized by a military junta which took control that year. Many of the military masterminds responsible for organizing that ballot also took part in Thursday's coup, apparently disillusioned with Tandja's refusal to step down.

If that portion is correct then there might be hope for Niger.

re: #251 RogueOne

I think there is a lot of hope for Niger if the junta lives up to its name to restore democracy in the country. The UN and African Union are backing a guy who basically overstayed his welcome and sought to be president for life. It figures that they'd push for the status quo, even if it deprives Niger residents of their rights and essentially backs a dictator in all but name (and I've seen some reports calling him a strongman president - which is a cute way of saying dictator).

The military wasn't going to sit back and let that happen and apparently there was no other way to get this guy out of office once Tandja did what he did.

Note too that Tandja is seen as the legitimate leader even though he originally came to power as a result of elections held following a 1999 coup. So, if the junta can bring about new elections in a timely fashion, it is likely that that person will be seen as the legitimate leader of the country.

And the situation there was such that the Honduran law suggested that the military was within its rights to take those actions - to get a guy out of office who violated the constitution's term limits. The military there took lots of grief from the international community even though the guy in office at the time had no right to be there.

Horribly, horribly HUGE mistake, the US administration's initial position on that.

re: #256 lawhawk

I agree, if we're all lucky this will end up like the Honduran situation. I'm slightly optimistic but this wasn't done with the blessing of the courts and legislature and military coups in Africa aren't exactly rare. I know they don't have a functioning court or legislative system right now so it's not exactly the fault of the military that they had to go in alone. OTOH, there's the history of the continent and blasting military music through loud speakers while seizing power is almost a cliche. Their supporters are coming out of the woodwork and the coup seems to have broad support so I guess I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt at this point.

The wife of televangelist Benny Hinn has filed for divorce from the high-profile pastor, whose reputation as an advocate of prosperity gospel has attracted millions of followers and criticism from lawmakers and watchdog groups over his lavish lifestyle.

Suzanne Hinn filed the papers in Orange County Superior Court on Feb. 1, citing irreconcilable differences, after more than 30 years of marriage. The papers note the two separated on Jan. 26 and that Hinn has been living in Dana Point, a wealthy coastal community in southern Orange County.

"Pastor Benny Hinn and his immediate family were shocked and saddened to learn of this news without any previous notice," Benny Hinn Ministries said Thursday in a statement. "Although Pastor Hinn has faithfully endeavored to bring healing to their relationship, those efforts failed and were met with the petition for divorce that was filed without notice."

Senegal President Abdoulaye Wade said he was heading to Niger this weekend to help resolve a political crisis after soldiers seized control of the uranium-rich African nation and detained its leader.

Mr. Wade was appointed as mediator in Niger's political crisis on Tuesday by the Economic Community of West African States. The Senegal president said he had decided to accelerate the pace of his intervention in Niger after the overthrow of President Mamadou Tandja on Thursday.

Col. Karimou, seated, wouldn't say when elections would be held.
"We need to act fast," Mr. Wade said from Dakar, in a telephone interview. He said he was confident of a transition back to civilian rule.

A junta, calling itself the Supreme Council for the Restoration of Democracy, on Thursday arrested President Tandja and suspended the constitution.

The coup took place after months of political tensions in Niger. Mr. Tandja, in the face of public resistance, had extended his rule after his second five-year term elapsed in December, by pushing through a referendum that extended his term and made him eligible for a third.

Col. Abdul Karim Goukoye Karimou, a spokesman for the Supreme Council, said elections would be called in a "reasonable period" of time, but declined to provide a precise timetable.

And the price per film goes way down with Netflix. I get up to three movies at a time for about 16 bucks a month...the two movies still sitting on top of my TV unwatched have only cost me about 38 bucks each so far, if you pro-rate them. Okay, so I go through periods where I don't watch as many movies as I thought.

From what I understand, she stopped making films once she started as Tiger's mistress - she said he was jealous and didn't much care for the idea of her in that line of work anymore.

Oddly enough, she also expressed what seemed to be a genuine, albeit twisted, concern for Mr. Woods' wife - she kept things quiet when she got pregnant, twice, by him. Said she didn't want to mess up her (the wife's) life, or the life of the kids.

She thought she was the only (other) one in his life! I was subjected to about 15 minutes of Headline News last weekend, and the woman arguing for Tiger's mistresses used that argument repeatedly. Saying the mistresses felt cheated on when they learned they weren't the only woman in his life besides his wife.

Personally, I think the whole thing's over. Tiger got caught, he's going through the American tradition of apologizing publicly, and everyone else is obsessing about where his dick was and when. He should just go play the European tour for a couple of years and ignore this whole thing. When he comes back, Nike will again pay him millions to 'just do it.'

The credit cards, issued by a U.S.-based financial institution, were used to buy travel-related items, such as plane tickets, connected to the alleged assassination operation, this person said.

Scotty Lago, who was awarded his bronze medal Thursday night, was at a party wearing a Team USA T-shirt when somebody snapped a photo of a woman kneeling below Lago's waist to kiss his medal.

I thought the olympic athletes were supposed to be 100% wholesome. It's not like they hand out tens of thousands of olympic brand condoms to the athletes.

It's an odd thing, this whole Dubai deal.

The story seems to suggest, if nothing else, that even Dubai isn't immune to the wild, zig-zag path of speculation that marks so much of the mindset of the authoritarian Arab world.

It was Mossad.

Federal agents have arrested three South Florida businessmen accused of exporting video games and other electronic products to a shopping mall in Paraguay that allegedly served as a front to finance the terrorist group Hezbollah, according to sources familiar with the case.

The Miami-Dade businessmen arrested late Thursday, Khaled Safadi, Emilio Gonzalez-Neira and Ulises Talavera-Campos, will appear in federal court Friday afternoon to face charges related to a Treasury Department ban on doing business with the black-listed militia and political organization based in Lebanon, sources said.

One other suspect in South America has been charged in the investigation, led by Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

An ICE spokeswoman declined to comment because the indictment charging the four men has not been unsealed.

The three Miami-Dade businessmen are accused of exporting hundreds of thousands of dollars' worth of PlayStation 2 video games and digital cameras to a shopping center called Galeria Page in Paraguay, which the U.S. government has designated as a funding arm of Hezbollah.

Inevitably, some athletes get beyond flirting. That’s why the Vancouver organizers have laid in a stock of 100,000 condoms, which works out to 14 for each of the 7,000 athletes, coaches, trainers and officials housed in the Games’ two villages. (Apparently, skiing, skating and sliding aren’t the only activities at which Olympians excel.)

more sex stuff

[Link: today.msnbc.msn.com...]

You know that has always been a bullshit story..Right?
They give away 100000 Condoms every Olympics...That doesn't mean Athletes are doing the wild thing for 2 weeks. What crap..
Look..If I'm in the Village and they put out free condoms with the Olympic rings on them I'm stealing every frickking single one.. I promise there won't be one leftover condom in the Village at the end of the day..I'd bet on it..
Doesn't mean one single thing about sex...EVERYBODY TAKES THE CONDOMS HOME! It's the Olympics..
And what pisses me off...These kids train for years for one moment and some media try to expose them as little whore dogs that saved their money to spend a few precious days at the Olympics to live their dreams...
And because everybody swipes the Condoms it must mean this was nothing more than a fuck session with strangers..

The use of Israeli names on the passports, and some other errors in an otherwise perfect operation might mean that the people who really did it are using misdirection in order to evade authorities.

Terrorists make a lot of enemies. Fatah has a lot of good reason to want revenge on this guy, and many other Hamas leaders.

Ghost Opera is the name given to the performance used to exorcise ghosts and evil spirits in traditional Chinese culture. Over time, it has morphed into a full-on opera, with multiple actors, musicians, and what-have-you.

It's not done often, but this is an auspicious occasion to perform it - the Boss is a Tiger, born on Chinese New Year's Day, and is celebrating her birthday and 20 years in business. Big deal all around.
