Any hound a porcupine nudges
Can’t be blamed for harboring grudges.
I know one hound that laughed all winter
At a porcupine that sat on a splinter.

Sadly, all the state of the art attempts to stop the BP oil leak with 2010 technology is proving as effective as science fiction.

If there's one thing we humans are great at it's digging ourselves into holes that we can't easily get out of.

Yep, and all the energy and innovation went into the digging, actually the drilling in this case. Not much effort was put into preparing for the failure. Indeed, they convinced themselves that it was impossible, and were lulled asleep by a decade without a disaster.

I'd think someone, somewhere, would have sat a bunch of guys and discussed "what do we do if a pipe breaks at the bottom of the sea," before this happened. I'd be really wrong, it seems. :(

I don't live anywhere NEAR the Gulf Oil Disaster, and it still makes me sick, and then angry. I don't do angry well. I think a LOT of people don't do angry well. I have stopped buying gas for my car at the local Arco station ( family owned & operated & a franchise with WAY the best prices around, but BP owned) over this. I hope they man up & do the right thing. I am NOT holding my breath.

The commenter "teleskiguy" has changed his icon! With a little perseverance and learning, the icon and picture was changed with great success. The picture most accurately represents the "danger" and "fun" elements of commenter "teleskiguy." The icon will be replaced permanently. The last icon that represented "teleskiguy" before being replaced was of some dude telemark skiing in a red jacket, and it wasn't the commenter "teleskiguy." This new picture and icon has the benefit of being a photograph of the commenter "teleskiguy" skiing on January 29, 2009 at Silverton Mountain, CO. Yes, the same Silverton Mountain where Shaun White perfected his loony ludicrous tricks to win Gold at the Olympics.

North Korea Infiltrated by Imperialist...iPhones?!

Demand for MP4 (MP3+video) files and the media devices to play them on continues to grow in North Korea, according to a source from Pyongyang.

The source reported yesterday in a phone interview, “Among the younger generation in Pyongyang and Shinuiju, taking pleasure in using MP4 files is a trend, while even general citizens are tending to seek out better quality radio.”

The source said, “Since MP4 files and CD players started circulating, smugglers and Korean-Chinese traders have been importing devices in bulk,” adding, “Young people are now sharing music and movies with their friends.”

“There are many kinds of MP4 players available in the jangmadang*, and the range of costs is also wide. South Korean products are the most expensive at around 100,000 won, while Chinese brands cost around 50,000 won and second-handed ones, which can be imported for around 10,000 each, are sold for between 10,000 and 30,000 won.”

Thai fire authorities say 20 blazes in Bangkok

BANGKOK - Thai fire authorities said Wednesday that arsonists have set 20 locations ablaze in Bangkok, including a massive shopping mall, a TV station, the stock exchange, a cinema and bank branches.

"We have been receiving frequent reports of fires breaking out," a fire department spokesman told AFP.

Massive plumes of smoke were billowing from Central World, one of Southeast Asia's largest shopping centres.

The offices of TV station Channel 3 and the Siam Theatre cinema in downtown bank were also ablaze. The spokesman said many Bangkok Bank branches were on fire. The bank has been targeted in the past by anti-government protesters who suspect it of financing rival groups.

The government announced a night-time curfew to deal with any "rogue protesters" who ignore a call by leaders of the anti-government "Red Shirt" movement to end their weeks-long rally in the heart of the capital.

The government has accused hardcore anti-government protesters of committing arson attacks. Some elements in the movement are reportedly unhappy with the Red Shirt leaders' decision to surrender.

Sounds like Detroit after a championship.

Bangkok burns after Thai protest leaders arrested

BANGKOK — Downtown Bangkok turned into a flaming battleground Wednesday as an army assault toppled the Red Shirt protest leadership, enraging followers who fired grenades and set numerous fires that cloaked the skyline in a black haze.

Using live ammunition, troops dispersed thousands of anti-government protesters who had been camped in the capital's premier shopping and residential district for weeks. Four protesters and an Italian news photographer were killed in the ensuing gunbattles and about 60 wounded.

After Red Shirt leaders gave themselves up to police, rioters set fires at the Stock Exchange, several banks, the headquarters of the Metropolitan Electricity Authority, the high-end Central World shopping mall and a cinema complex that collapsed. Thick smoke drifted across the sky of this city of 10 million people.

The government declared a nighttime curfew in Bangkok, and said army operations would continue through the night. An announcement signed by Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva and broadcast on television said nobody in the capital was allowed out of their homes from 8 p.m. until 6 a.m unless they have permission from authorities.

Protesters also turned their rage on the local media, which they have accused of pro-government coverage. They attacked the offices of state-run Channel 3, setting fire to cars outside and puncturing water pipes that flooded the building.

"At Channel 3 need urgent help from police, soldiers!!!" tweeted news anchor Patcharasri Benjamasa. "News cars were smashed and they are about to invade the building."

Hours later its building was on fire. Its executives were evacuated by helicopter. Other staff escaped on foot.

The English-language Bangkok Post newspaper evacuated its staff after threats from the Red Shirts. A large office building down the street from the Post was set afire.

Unrest also spread to the rural northeast of the country, where Red Shirts, who claim Abhisit's government is elitist and oblivious to their plight, retain strong support.

Local media reported protesters set fire to government offices in the city of Udon Thani and vandalized a city hall in Khon Kaen. Udon Thani's governor asked the military to intervene. TV images also showed troops retreating after being attacked by mobs in Ubon Ratchathani.

The chaotic end to the Red Shirt gathering in Bangkok is certain to deal a heavy blow to the economy and tourism industry of Thailand, a key U.S. ally and long considered one of the more stable countries in Southeast Asia. The Red Shirts are demanding the ouster of Abhisit's government, the dissolution of Parliament and new elections.

Cabinet minister Satit Vongnongteay described the chaos as anticipated "aftershocks."

"There are violent-prone protesters who remain angry," Satit told a news conference.

At least 44 people have been killed, most of them civilians, in a week of violence in Bangkok as a military attempt to blockade the protesters - who had camped in the 1-square-mile (3-square-kilometer) Rajprasong district for six weeks - instead touched off street fighting, with soldiers firing on protesters who fought back mostly with homemade weapons.

China knife attack leaves 13 injured

At gang of least five men armed with knives burst into the dormitory of a vocational college today and slashed nine students, one of them seriously.

Four students had been wounded in an earlier confrontation between the two groups, bringing the total injured to 13.

The attack has sparked new fears in a country on edge over a series of shocking rampages, many of them at schools.

The pre-dawn attack took place in Haikou, the capital of the southern island province of Hainan, when the gang burst into the Hainan Institute of Science and Technology and slashed the students, the China News Service reported.

...The attack follows five separate assaults by lone assailants against schoolchildren as young as three in the last two months that have left 17 dead and more than 50 wounded, including some adults.

AP source: Seoul to show proof Pyongyang sank ship

WASHINGTON – South Korea will lay out evidence later this week that Pyongyang sank one of the South's navy ships in March, killing 46 sailors, a U.S. official said Tuesday.

The proof will show that North Korea fired a torpedo, triggering an explosion that sank the 1,200-ton Cheonan on March 26 near the two countries' border, said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity ahead of the expected announcement by Seoul. U.S. officials have assisted in the investigation, which Seoul officials plan to detail as early as Thursday.

The disclosure comes as Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton was meeting privately Tuesday with the Obama administration's envoys to North Korea, Stephen Bosworth and Sung Kim.

South Korea's Yonhap news agency reported that investigators had obtained traces of explosives used in a type of North Korean torpedo.

The South Korean Defense Ministry said it couldn't confirm the report. The North has denied involvement.

Hemorrhoid stapler

Covidien has launched the EEA Hemorrhoid & Prolapse Stapler Set with DST series technology. It is used to treat hemorrhoids and rectal prolapse, and although still uncomfortable, internal stapling and excision of hemorrhoidal tissue is supposedly less painful than surgical hemorrhoidectomy.

#EpicFail: Blanche Lincoln Turned Away From Home Polling Place This Morning

Sen. Blanche Lincoln suffered what might be one of the all-time greatest campaign staff fails this morning. According to her campaign staff, Lincoln was initially turned away when she tried to vote at her home her polling place this morning after elections officials discovered she had already requested an absentee ballot be sent to her Virginia home. Poll workers told Lincoln their records showed she had already voted.

"She just wanted to be prepared," campaign spokesperson Katie Laning Niebaum told me a few minutes ago. "She has requested absentee ballots on many past occasions."

Lincoln didn't fill out the absentee ballot this time, her staff no doubt eager for the classic casting-the-ballot photo op this morning. But, thanks to this mix-up, she's stuck with the less appealing "filling out the provisional ballot so elections officials can determine if her vote is legal or not" shot instead.

A state elections official told me that Lincoln's ballot will be counted tonight -- assuming she passes the provisional review -- but not until after all the absentee and early voting ballots have been counted. That means Lincoln's own ballot might not count in the official total until well after the race has been called.

DOJ Voting Rights attorney resigns over Black Panthers stonewalling

A trial attorney with the Department of Justice’s Voting Rights Section has resigned, citing concerns about the government’s refusal to prosecute a case involving voter intimidation by the New Black Panther Party. A letter of resignation obtained by The Washington Examiner from a former Justice Department employee makes clear DOJ has refused to allow attorneys in the Voting Rights Section to testify before the congressionally-chartered bipartisan U.S. Commission on Civil Rights, despite subpoenas that could result in their being held in contempt.

Some more disturbing news from the Blumenthal news conference came to light about one of the veteran supporters on stage with him.

What’s funny about the Blumenthal conference

1stCavRVN11B sent me a message from one of his friends who recognized one of the veterans on the stage with Richard Blumenthal from POW Net’s Wall of Shame. His name is William Joseph Trumpower and here’s the picture of him at Blumenthal’s press conference taken from a screenshot of a Fox News video;

...

And here’s a screen shot of an interview Trumpower did on local TV under his AKA name Elliot Storm;

...

Trumpower or Storm actually did serve in Vietnam, but he embellished his career to sell a book.

CLAIMING BRONZE STAR w/VALOR device. Claims 2nd Lt, Claims Wears 3 Purple Hearts, 2 Bronze Stars w/V. The jacket in EARLIER pictures boasted 8 ribbons. This NEW pic has more and includes V device on Bronze Star and 2nd Lt bars. Claims he worked with Ollie North.

ACTUAL – National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Combat Action Ribbon, Purple Heart w/1*. Served 11 Oct 1968 to 30 Jan 1970 as a USMC rifleman (MOS 0311). Has enlisted service number (not officer’s)

There’s more at the POW Net link including an email Trumpower sent to our friends admitting his chicanery.

Medic earns Nation's second highest honor for heroism during Afghan firefight

SAN ANTONIO, Texas -- An Army medic's heroism during a firefight in Afghanistan led to his recognition with the U.S. military's second highest decoration for valor.

Sgt. Joseph L. Lollino received the Distinguished Service Cross and the Purple Heart from Lt. Gen. Eric Schoomaker, Surgeon General of the Army, May 17, during the Army Medical Symposium cosponsored by U.S. Army Medical Command and the Association of the United States Army at San Antonio, Texas.

Lollino, a native of Hoffman Estates, Ill., retrieved and treated five casualties when his convoy was ambushed June 20, 2008, in the Paktika Province of Afghanistan. He was serving with Company C, 1st Battalion (Airborne), 503rd Infantry Regiment, on his second deployment to Afghanistan.

"One vehicle was very badly disabled. The RPG blew up a fuel can in back starting a massive fire," Lollino said.

"There were two mountainsides on both sides of the road, with a small dip on the left side of the road, so that makes it very difficult to maneuver around. It was very rocky with some trees," he said.

Lollino drove his armored humvee through enemy machine-gun and small-arms fire to reach the disabled vehicle, returned fire with his weapon, extracted the casualties from the vehicle and began treatment.

"As the (casualty collection point) started taking fire I returned fire," he said. "I used a couple of magazines until the truck got behind us, then the .50 cal (machine gun) and the Mark 19 (grenade launcher) took over."

"They shot RPGs at us, and I got down to cover one of the wounded who had very bad shrapnel wounds. I got wounded myself," he added.

Despite shrapnel in his upper arm, Lollino treated four Soldiers with shrapnel wounds to the neck, legs, arms and shoulder, plus a case of smoke inhalation. He loaded them into another vehicle and continued treatment as they escaped the four-kilometer long ambush.

House Passes Beer Resolution

While most of Washington was focused on Tuesday's election results, the House was busy doing something else: Passing a resolution about beer.

House Resolution 1297, sponsored by Rep. Betsy Markey, supports "the goals and ideals of American Craft Beer Week."

"We've got quite a number of microbreweries and entrepreneurs that are creating jobs, and we wanted to celebrate that this is a craft," Markey told POLITICO.

"I think beer has been a tradition since this country was founded," said Markey. "We wanted to celebrate entrepeneurship — and good beer!"

Markey is obviously partial to brews from her home state of Colorado, but she won't claim a favorite.

"You can't just have one," said Markey. "It really depends on what mood you're in. Sometimes, I like a light beer — I might want a Skinny Dip — or otherwise prefer a heavier brew."

The real question is: Why would anyone vote against this?

"It does seem like a no brainer," said Markey.

Mmmmm beer!

On Location: 'Captain America' will be filmed in … London

Few comic book characters are as homespun as Captain America, who uses his superhuman powers to fight the Nazis during World War II while draped in the colors of Old Glory.

Yet even Captain America's overtly patriotic credentials weren't enough to keep a film about his exploits from being shot overseas.

The upcoming movie from Marvel Studios was originally to be filmed in Los Angeles. Instead, "Captain America: The First Avenger," starring Chris Evans, Samuel Jackson and Hugo Weaving, will shoot this July in London, where the story is partially set.

That decision was a blow to L.A.'s below-the-line community, which had been banking on the project to employ hundreds of crew members at a time when relatively few big-budget features are shot locally, thanks to rising competition from other states and countries.

Hot Air has a letter sent to the mayor of Los Angeles from AZ utility commissioner Gary Pierce in response to the LA boycott of Arizona.

This is an instant classic:

Dear Mayor Villaraigosa,

I was dismayed to learn that the Los Angeles City Council voted to boycott Arizona and Arizona-based companies — a vote you strongly supported — to show opposition to SB 1070 (Support our Law Enforcement and Safe Neighborhoods Act).

You explained your support of the boycott as follows: “While we recognize that as neighbors, we share resources and ties with the State of Arizona that may be difficult to sever, our goal is not to hurt the local economy of Los Angeles, but to impact the economy of Arizona. Our intent is to use our dollars — or the withholding of our dollars — to send a message.” (emphasis added)

I received your message; please receive mine. As a state-wide elected member of the Arizona Corporation Commission overseeing Arizona’s electric and water utilities, I too am keenly aware of the “resources and ties” we share with the City of Los Angeles. In fact, approximately twenty-five percent of the electricity consumed in Los Angeles is generated by power plants in Arizona.

If an economic boycott is truly what you desire, I will be happy to encourage Arizona utilities to renegotiate your power agreements so Los Angeles no longer receives any power from Arizona-based generation. I am confident that Arizona’s utilities would be happy to take those electrons off your hands. If, however, you find that the City Council lacks the strength of its convictions to turn off the lights in Los Angeles and boycott Arizona power, please reconsider the wisdom of attempting to harm Arizona’s economy.

People of goodwill can disagree over the merits of SB 1070. A state-wide economic boycott of Arizona is not a message sent in goodwill.

Sincerely,

Commissioner Gary Pierce

The Texas State Board of Education is meeting this week to determine how best to fuck up Texas public school curriculum. There's a public hearing today that's starting right about now, and Texas Freedom Network is going to be live blogging it.

Blumenthal support collapsing in Connecticut

Following a New York Times report that he exaggerated his military record, Democratic Senate hopeful Richard Blumenthal has lost ground in match-ups against all his potential Republican challengers in Connecticut.

The latest Rasmussen Reports telephone survey of Likely Voters in Connecticut finds Blumenthal with just a three-point advantage over Linda McMahon, 48% to 45%. Two weeks ago, he led the former CEO of World Wrestling Entertainment by 13 percentage points. The New York Times story broke late Monday; the survey was taken Tuesday evening.

Woman died after doctors failed to spot toilet brush in her buttocks

Cindy Corton, 35, was left with the bizarre injury after a drunken fall in a friend's bathroom in 2005.

She was twice seen by hospital staff in the aftermath of the incident and an X-ray was carried out.

But an inquest heard it took Mrs Corton, of Sleaford, Lincolnshire, two years to convince doctors that the handle was lodged in flesh of her bottom.

By then what should have been a routine procedure to remove it had become much more dangerous.

After two unsuccessful operations in 2007, Mrs Corton underwent further, much riskier surgery and died from massive blood loss at Nottingham's Queen's Medical Centre in June last year.

Recording a narrative verdict, coroner Stuart Fisher criticised Dr Killian Mbewe, who first examined Mrs Corton at Grantham hospital.

After the inquest, husband Peter Corton said: "Cindy got a very poor service from the NHS.

"I'm sure she would have got better treatment in foreign countries."

That's the only good thing the Republicans came away with from last night? That spinning Obama's endorsement as poison thingy? President Obama welcomed Arlen Specter into the Democratic party...it was the right thing to do, but he didn't exactly break his back trying to help him in the primary. Arlen lost because he wasn't seen as trustworthy...changing parties to avoid losing one primary only to lose the other. His only hope at reelection was for nobody to challenge him in the primary.

I'm not really sure why this is getting the traction that it is getting. Blumenthal has stated that he never gave this sort of information to the press, and the few times he has mentioned Vietnam, he misspoke. It's no different than the 8 times Kerry mentioned he had been in a mission in Cambodia, we know know that it wasn't really a "mission," just an incursion.

I know this is hours later, but thought anyone who read the earlier exchanges about Thailand would be interested in what I heard from a Thai foreign exchange student I went to school with many, many, many years ago. I was concerned with the news I was seeing coming out of Bangkok and dropped him a note asking if he and his family were safe. Here is how he explained the situation:

"There is nothing much happened in Thailand. It is just a stupid situation when the former corrupted prime minister wants to overthrow the present government and the monarchy.

Thailand is in chaos because of our damned politicians. They are fighting for power and money. There are also a lot of protestors who are lazy, poor and stupid who support the demonstration as they were promised that they will get money after the demonstration if they win.

I understand our people and am quite sure that dictatorship would suit our country where there are too much freedom. We have much more freedom than in the States. Our people don't obey the law.

In fact, I really want to see bloodshed and believe that everything will be back to normal situation. It sounds very cruel. I don't want to see people die on the street. However, it will be a good lesson for all that if they don't fight for the nation, but fight for their own group, there will be no winner. We, Thai people, will lose.

Nothing to worry about. I was born in Thailand. My family are safe and will be safe."

...and then a little later on:

"Our politicians make their investment by buying votes and make a return by corruption which also happen in many countries in this world.

This is sad story but it's true. That's why democracy is not suitable for Thailand. It is demonstration+crazy.

As I was born here, I know our people. I know how to survive and live happily here.

Have a nice weekends and I update you to let you know that I'm still alive! :-) "

What really struck me was the whole "no big deal" attitude. I think I'd have been freaked out had that been happening in my city!

I think we had something like that in the Cold War's early days. "Dumbeye" or something like that, they called. A low-yield nuclear AA missle to counter large formations of Russki bombers.

They shelved the idea, as I recall, after talking to the guys in the bomber units about it, who said they'd counter it by flying low and over populated areas.

Darul Uloom Deoband, the self-appointed guardian for Indian Muslims, in a Talibanesque fatwa that reeked of tribal patriarchy, has decreed that it is "haram" and illegal according to the Sharia for a family to accept a woman's earnings. Clerics at the largest Sunni Muslim seminary after Cairo's Al-Azhar said the decree flowed from the fact that the Sharia prohibited proximity of men and women in the workplace.

"It is unlawful (under the Sharia law) for Muslim women to work in the government or private sector where men and women work together and women have to talk with men frankly and without a veil," said the fatwa issued by a bench of three clerics.

Constution Khaput

India’s politicians seem to believe that governance and the delivery of justice are vote catching devices, notwithstanding that such a perception often violates the norms of the modern justice system and could render governance open to abuse.

Recent diktats by Haryana’s khap panchayats or caste councils have handed down brutal death penalties to young married couples for choosing partners within the same gotra — clan or kinship group — because this “violates the traditional bhaichaara or brotherhood that must be preserved and protected at all costs.”

Define Honor Killing as a Heinous Crime: Experts

Amid strong voices against caste council rulings and honour killings, experts today demanded an amendment in Indian Penal Code to define these as "heinous crime" by adding a new section to the criminal law.

"There is lack of accurate information on honour killings in India, primarily because it is not defined in our law. It should be defined as a heinous crime, it is a crime against women," said Supreme Court Advocate Kirti Singh during an interactive panel discussion on 'Honour Killing'.

Family of three raped, killed for reporting theft

ROHTAK: Three theft accused on Sunday night allegedly raped and killed three women of a family after they complained about theft but later withdrew their complaints under pressure from police and the village panchayat. The killings happened despite Jind district's Khokhri village khap mediating between the two warring parties and the police being informed in advance about threat to the lives of victims.

Police have now booked three local youths, an inspector and an assistant sub-inspector for rape, trespass and murder on the complaint of the family members of the victims.

ON a farm in Wyoming, USA, goats are being milked for their spider webs.
And if that sounds bizarre, molecular biologist Randy Lewis claims that within two years, spider silk milked from goats could replace your body's tired or strained tendons and ligaments - maybe even bones.

Mom gave long-distance order for honor killing, police say

VANCOUVER, British Columbia -- In the cold end, it was her own mother who gave the final order to cut the young woman's throat. That's what police in India say.

They say the mother, an upstanding woman in Vancouver's Punjabi community, spoke into her cellphone across an ocean and told the men, "Kill her." And with the order -- with the death of Jaswinder Kaur Sidhu, a beautiful 25-year-old Indian Canadian woman known as Jassi -- the family's honor was restored, police say.

Why don't you leave these people alone? This is their culture, and just because it doesn't consort with what you deem is acceptable civil behavior, in these countries it's law, it's cultural and it's traditional. How would you like it if someone was clipping and pasting articles and taunts and rants about Christian fundamentalism or the Catholic Church ever single day?

Githa Hariharan: Honor Killings Still A Problem

Not only are they still a problem, there is no good way to estimate how widespread they are, since deaths are often concealed. It's a problem that people like Urvashi Butalia and Ritu Menon talked about in their respective books on partition, but the essential social structure that fosters honor killings (rigid social boundaries between castes and ethno-religious groups, firmly entrenched patriarchy) is still prevalent in rural India. And while the violence is usually directed against women, men are also frequently targeted by the families of their lover or spouse.

If you want to step up to an SLR, the Canon Rebel is great. But there are really good cameras out there as point and shoot. $300 or less. Sony has a special deal so their optics are fantastic. My wife loves her Canon Elf. Same color processing (Digic 4) as my pro camera.

Father Says He Set Fire That Killed Three

CHICAGO — A man set a fire last weekend that killed his pregnant daughter, his son-in-law and his 3-year-old grandson, prosecutors say, because he disapproved of his daughter’s marriage.

The man, Subhash Chander, who lives in Oak Forest, a suburb south of here, told investigators that he was upset with his daughter, Monika Rani, and her husband, Rajesh Kumar, for what he saw as “a cultural slight,” said Robert J. Milan, the first assistant state’s attorney of Cook County.

honor killings?! how about some good (or at least funny) news!!

Irony of the week:
Trespassing law may turn more illegals into citizens
[Link: azcapitoltimes.com...]

Arizona’s new immigration law may have been aimed at deporting as many illegal immigrants as possible, but an ironic side effect will allow more undocumented residents to apply for temporary work visas and permanent U.S. citizenship, according to research by the Arizona Capitol Times.

The new law will add to a processing backlog that already has caused federal authorities to release an increasing number of illegal immigrants back into the U.S. to await deportation hearings. And if nationwide figures can be applied to Arizona, one in four of those who are released from federal custody fail to appear in court.

The arrest-and-release policy is a little-known part of federal immigration law that allows illegal immigrants to challenge deportation and obtain legal residency, and a driver’s license, as long as they meet certain conditions. If more illegal immigrants are apprehended and processed through the federal system – which is expected to happen after Arizona’s immigration law takes effect on July 29 – then an even greater number would qualify for legal status.

“In a sense, it’s like there’s some incentive to get caught,” said Tucson immigration attorney Maurice Goldman. “Theoretically, more people would end up in front of immigration judges, which means more would get released.”

....

Well the Rebel does excellent stills, and HD video. (Got Mac?) Easy to use, and a good camera to learn on by using more advanced features to get good shots in more difficult circumstances. Or learning to get your depth of field at its best. Or adjusting flash intensity. That sort of thing. Autopilot for the novice, full manual for the student or pro.
