NYT: Gaza Through Fresh Eyes

Middle East • Views: 2,657

During the Gaza flotilla incident, there was a deluge of propaganda from pro-Palestinian sources claiming that Israel’s blockade was causing poverty and starvation in Gaza. But here’s an article and photo essay from noted pro-Israel shill the New York Times (ahem) with a perspective that might surprise you: Gaza, Through Fresh Eyes.

GAZA — For some, it’s the relative modernity — the jazzy cellphone stores and pricey restaurants. For others, it’s the endless beaches with children whooping it up. But for nearly everyone who visits Gaza, often with worry of danger and hostility, what’s surprising is the fact that daily life, while troubled, often has the staggering quality of the very ordinary.

EoZ wrote up an excellent post about this.

Instead of putting Gaza in context, the media and NGOs have grotesquely twisted the story of Gaza into a parody of objectivity. Gaza is presented as being one of the worst places to live in the planet, and this is simply a lie. Egyptians a few miles away are poorer than Gazans but do not get pledges of hundreds of millions of dollars to make their lives easier. People in sub-Saharan Africa can only dream about the daily caloric intake of the average Gazan, and they are not spending their days emailing letters to the editor about their lack of Arabic World Cup coverage. The idea of a new dress shop opening at a high-end mall, as shown in the second photo above, does not jibe with the the narrative of extreme poverty or of “slow genocide.”

Gaza’s truth has been perverted by the hatred that many have of Israel. This has strengthened Hamas immeasurably, and it also forces Gazans to live under an unyielding Islamist rule that will not change as long as this status quo exists.

Which brings up another underreported story - the fact that the so-called humanitarian groups are not motivated by love of Arabs, but rather by hate of Israel.

And in case anyone missed it, here’s Stephen Colbert with the Israeli ambassador. I think he takes a pro-Israel stance in his own way.

And here’s everyone’s favorite, Bill Maher, siding with reality.

Heh. Broken clock alert - Rep. Charles Rangel (D-tax evader/NY) has called for an investigation of flotilla participants if they seek US visas, in addition to other NY politicians including Rep. Weiner (D-NY).

Oh, and Hamas thugs know how to wear uniforms when it suits them. Those uniforms disappear when it comes time to attack Israel though.

re: #15 Charles

All one has to do is look just north of Gaza and see a series of premier tourist destinations and awesome beaches in Israel including Netanya and Tel Aviv. It could be a banking and tech center like Tel Aviv or even Beirut (which was frequently called the Paris of the Middle East until the Lebanese civil war and PLO decided to turn the country into a mess).

The potential is there - but the polity isn’t.

What is on the list and what isn’t is sort of baffling. Having said that, nobody is going to die because they can’t get frozen salmon or coriander. They have all the necessities, and alot of things that clearly aren’t needed to survive.

Clearly, Gaza isn’t starving, and equally clearly, some of the items not allowed into Gaza are harmless, and there’s no good reason to not allow them.

Having been to Gaza myself, and the beaches just north of it in Israel, I can attest that the beaches are beautiful! The Palestinian, with a little planning, could take advantage of the depression, and become an alternative to Dubai, with less excess and nicer beaches.

In fact, Gaza could serve as a bridge between the Arab world and the west, at least for trading and tourism. What an opportunity they’re squandering….

That’s been a popular talking point (that the evil Israelis, who aren’t allowing “luxury items” like coriander and other spices into Gaza, are causing unnecessary suffering), and I recently read somewhere that the “list” of items was actually a list of items that was deduced as having been banned, from interviews with private shop owners in Gaza.

STOCKTON, Calif. (AP) - A Sunday school teacher who pleaded guilty to kidnapping and murdering a neighbor girl in Northern California made a tearful apology to the victim’s family Monday as she was sentenced to prison for the rest of her life.

The punishment came after Melissa Huckaby, 29, reached a plea deal with prosecutors that took the death penalty and the possibility of parole off the table in the killing of 8-year-old Sandra Cantu of Tracy, whose body was found in a suitcase pulled from an irrigation pond.

Actually, I found where I saw it. It was in another post by EoZ (again, I seem to be citing him a lot, lately)

By the way: there is no Israeli blacklist of items allowed in Gaza that includes coriander or jams. Gisha made up a list that they “deduced” from speaking to Gazans; that list was publicized by reporters and activists who thought it was too good to check. In fact, the IDF works on a day-to-day basis with various NGOs and others in Gaza to see what can make it in the upcoming shipments. Israel does have a list of allowed items that will always be allowed in; everything else is done on a case by case basis. If UNRWA made a special request for coriander or chocolate, there is no doubt that it would be allowed in. Right now, the problem is bureaucratic and practical, not policy.

You can trust it or not, but I first saw that claim at EoZ.

Also, as a more general argument. It is not the responsibility of Israel to allow in anything that isn’t a weapon. Israel shouldn’t be responsible for running Gaza’s customs. There is a blockade and siege in place. Israel’s only obligation is to ensure the basics are allowed in, to prevent a humanitarian crisis. Israel goes above and beyond that obligation.

Well… a NPR reader knows the answer…

“”The idea is to put the Palestinians on a diet, but not to make them die of hunger,” Dov Weisglass, an adviser to Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, told the Israeli media. Quote from a few years ago but still the Isreali objective just like the Nazis did feed the just just enough so they could still do work in the forced labor camps.”

This is a made-up fake quote. Weisglass has denied he ever said such a thing, but of course it is circulated all over the moonbat and anti-Semitic blogosphere.

What an opportunity they’re squandering…

It really pisses me off. It could be so much better if people would just think. But people don’t want to build there because of insurance costs. Much as I support the Israelis, I’d be VERY pissed if they leveled my $500 Million hotel.

Peace Jihad

This is an escalation of the Intifada strategy. First to create the situation where Israeli soldiers have to fight using only riot control techniques, any use of firearms, even when attacked with metal pipes, rocks or knives will result in condemnation by the international community. Then these infiltration techniques mount, become a swarm, combined with an intifada type uprising in Israel.

As we saw with the Aid Boat Jihad, 15 Israelis armed with non-lethal weapons can not control 50 peace activists attacking them with metal pipes, knives, stun grenades, Molotov cocktails, bottles, and guns. The Israelis will be have no choice but to use deadly force. The international community, especially the EU, UN and the media, will howl and demonise Israel on cue.

These peace Jihadis are not marching on Israel in order to put flowers in their guns, they are not interested in equal rights, they intend to slit the Jews throats and beat them to death. Eventually. That is the goal in stages. But first the Israelis must be harried, terrorised, demonised, weakened and exhausted on all fronts, political, financial and military.

With all this pressure to delegitimise and harass Israel from all sides. How can they focus their military to fend off missiles and mortars from Hezbollah and Hamas, with their patrons Syria and Iran looming with still greater threats.

The Israeli military, intelligence and government will be too preoccupied with the swarming peace Jihad and answering all the blood libels.

The vile international community and media will be too occupied with fabrications of Israeli war crimes each time the Israelis use minimum force to ward off a beating, knifing, abduction, missile, rocket and mortar attack.

How can a tiny country the size of New Jersey with a Jewish population about half the population of New York City survive against an endless Jihad on all fronts, military media, and political?

I think The Zohan kind of semi covers that territory.

The problem (…debatable…) with Zohan, is that it was more of a comedy for those familiar with and exasperated with the region. Average Joe who watched it wouldn’t have walked away with anything more than they walked in with. “Let’s just all get a long… in New York”

I once had a neighbor fire up his compressor down in the parking area. Damn thing was so loud I knew it had to stop within the first 5 minutes. So, I vocalized my feelings about it. Lasted a little while longer and never heard it again. Neighbors from hell can be one of the worst things in life.

I’ll have to wait for other neighbors to complain. I can’t say anything to them. They’re obsessed with me so I avoid them as much as possible. Everytime someone call the cops on them they think it’s me. Every time one of their pets die they tell their children that I killed it. About a year or two ago she came over screaming that she hired a lawyer and was going to sue me for stalking her. I have no idea what she was talking about. I think she has mental health issues or a drug problem..

Or they’re having trouble finding stringers who aren’t overtly members of Hamas? Or there really isn’t any news going on there and they’d focus on elsewhere… (which is the most likely answer - after all - why send someone to cover ordinary life events when they are by definition - ordinary).

I suspect they’re laying low for a while so they don’t get busted again so soon. In a month or so they’ll be back to running Islamist propaganda pics.

One Israeli Policeman Shot Dead, Three Wounded in Shooting Incident in Judea and Samaria
14 June 2010 , 10:07

One Israeli policeman was shot dead and three were wounded in a shooting attack in the Judea and Samaria region. One is in moderate condition, and two are in stable condition.

Four Israeli Policemen were shot by terrorists at the Al Fawar Junction south of Hebron on route 60. The wounded personnel were immediately evacuated to a hospital nearby. One officer was killed by the injuries he sustained. One is in moderate condition and two are in stable condition.

IDF security forces searched the area; however, it is not yet clear whether the shooting was carried out from a passing vehicle or a premeditatedly planted car.

Last Friday (June 11), two Border Police soldiers were lightly injured after a terror operative attempted to run them over with a car in Wadi Al- Joz in Jerusalem. While the terrorist tried to flee the scene, the Border Patrol forces opened fire.

She also thought that Japan was in the “south pacific” and New Zealand was part of Canada.
I think she was zonked on valium or something. She used to show films 2 out of three days and go to sleep at her desk.

Teacher? Ouch.

I hate when clueless people ask “do you speak ‘Israelian’”

I imagine getting a signal without one is pretty difficult in the mountains.

There is almost no getting off air TV signals up here… we have DISH… and we have to have DSL, since currently it’s not an affordable business model for Comcast or someone to lay cable up here.

If you sit on the east side of a mountain, with a big enough antenna, you can get something… it may be better now with the digital over the air signal, but in general… it’s a dish or nothing much else.

I thought the right held the constitution in high regard:

“The author of Arizona’s controversial new immigration law is considering a new proposal that would block the children of illegal immigrants from becoming citizens if they were born in the United States.

Critics of the bill that Republican state Sen. Russell Pearce is weighing say it would fly in the face of the 14th Amendment to the Constitution, which grants citizenship to anyone born in the country.”

I’ve been accused of not being proud of my “heritage” because I don’t speak Spanish. I have dark brown eyes, light skin and dark red/brown hair so some people think I’m Hispanic. I looked at the lady who had been lecturing me for not being a proud Hispanic and said the last time I looked people of German and Irish decent don’t speak Spanish. I’ve never seen anyone turn pale so quickly, and her boss had a “I want to speak to you in the back” look on his face. She wasn’t working there the next time I went into the store.

I’ve gotten that. I also just get little old ladies launching into extended conversation in Spanish because they assume I’ll understand.

re: #233 Joo-LiZ

You can’t be serious….

I’m forever being approached by Spanish speaking folks. I smile politely and say “I don’t speak Spanish.” Or “No hablo espanol.” And then they usually laugh and I say, “Em… muy poquito, pero mi espanol is muy malo.” And I think they think I’m lying, but that is really about all I can say! That’s not something I’m proud of. I’m been here too long not to speak it.

Anyway, I’m usually asked for directions and it’s amazing how you don’t HAVE to speak the same language for that. Grunting, pointing and knowing my numbers, works pretty well.

Not everyone in Gaza is a terrorist. If the blockade was lifted, not everyone driving around, in and out of Israel, would be blowing up something.

Absolutely. But as Charles Krauthammer noted recently; if every other option for defense is taken out of Israel’s hands (Forward Defense (a.k.a. “occupation”) and Active Defense (a.k.a. targeted arrests and assassinations)) then the only thing left is a Passive Defense (a.k.a. siege & blockade). The rest of Gaza gets the brunt of it.

Just like in every other war in history. If your government gets your country into a war, the population suffers the consequences.

Mexicans do have a version of Spanish.

I don’t speak Spanish, but the specific Spanish that I don’t speak is Mexican/Californian Spanish.

When I was living in England, I kept getting approached on the street by Spanish tourists, who wanted help, and thought I looked like a possible Spanish speaker.

I can sort of give directions in Spanish—REAL Spanish—MEXICAN Spanish…but I couldn’t understand a damn thing they were saying half the time, and vice versa.

I loved Pan’s Labyrinth, but damn, those accents were distracting.

I find that I can understand Argentinians and Uruguayans better. For obvious reasons. Some parts of Spain as well. Otherwise it’s easy to get lost with the dialects. It’s like trying to understand someone using Cockney English. Slang use would be the other addition.

Some of it is context. If I’m in a largely Latino part of town, people figure everyone will speak Spanish, and I’m not obviously Anglo to the eye. I worked in the Mission for a couple of years, and then in Oakland, near International Boulevard. You’re on the street, you’re there, you look like you could be Mexican, people will just start talking.

Folks are polite when they realize you don’t speak Spanish, except for one guy who was trying to pick me up, who started a whole lecture on the importance of embracing my roots, and being able to teach Spanish to my kids.

Insulting each others’ heritage in new and interesting ways is a contact sport between my wife and I. She regularly introduces me as her drunken Irish man friend, and I her as my cuban/mexican/whatever cleaning lady.

That’s always been the issue with guerrilla war in general. When the enemy doesn’t wear uniforms and is part of the general population, it’s nearly impossible to counter effectively.

Still, we’ve found ways and so have the Israelis. That’s another lesson of the Iraq War: Insurgent forces can be beaten, given real local cooperation. When the Sunnis turned on Al Qaeda in Iraq and the surge went after their ratlines, the terrorists were defeated. Yes, they still set off bombs, but they are a broken force.

Note: I’m not speaking about whether we should have gone in to begin with, just that we did in fact defeat an insurgent force in Iraq.
