Dave Weigel Has New Sympathy for Sarah Palin

Media • Views: 3,217

Dave Weigel tells his side of the story in Esquire: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Sarah Palin (Kinda).

Over the first churning 48 hours of this whole mess, I resisted — and then accepted — a new sympathy for a politician I’d never pretended to admire much: Sarah Palin. A political celebrity who raises money and appears on TV needs the media in a way that a reporter doesn’t. But damn if I didn’t feel sorry for the way every utterance Palin ever makes is taffy-pulled and inspected for lies. During the trial of a boy who hacked into Palin’s private e-mail account, I reported a rumor while appearing on MSNBC — where I am now a contributor — that she had “perjured” herself on the stand. She hadn’t. She’d spoken correctly, if clumsily, about some of her old e-mails. Like I said: screwed, and then a new sympathy. (Of course, journalists would have had an easier time reaching me than Palin, who is notoriously difficult to get a comment from unless you happen to be a Fox News host.)

This is, obviously, a weird place to be. Lucky for me, it’s not a place that will prevent me from working again; it is not a place isolated from journalism. At one level it enhances the way I think about what I cover — I can’t imagine ever again writing about someone without manning up to get him or her to comment, or provide more context. (Or explain why the hell he wanted Matt Drudge to set himself on fire.)

But it’s not a place I want anyone else to visit. When I finished up the phone call with Strong, brutally aware that I was about to spend weeks or months carrying this burden, I realized that no one could take the same scrutiny and walk away looking saintly.

“I just hope,” I said, “that no one ever does this to you.”

I have a lot of sympathy with Weigel’s point here; people with various political motives have been examining my every comment with microscopes and ideological filters for years. I’ve learned to ignore 95% of it, but the reality is it comes with the territory.

I feel your sympathy here.

However, I have never been one to attack Palin's private life. The fact is that she is a craven political opportunist who abandoned her post in the hopes of cashing in.

The fact is that she is dumb as dirt and seemingly barely literate.

The fact iss that the policies she advocates are terrible for this nation.

The fact is that unlike you, Charles, she regularly does lie and distort facts for her own political gains and the feeding of her minions.

While I would be very glad to not have the level of pettiness that people apply to politicians and the parsing of every word for false gotchas - and I would even extend that to Palin - politicians can only be rated on their words and policies.

So Palin gets no pass. No politician should get any passes ever - when it comes to their politics and their policies and their career actions.

I'm all for keeping the conversation limited to such though.

Thats great and all, but her political positions are still nuts and I can't see myself ever supporting her as a candidate for any office.

Not only will I never vote for Sarah Palin for anything, if I could travel back in time and change my 2008 vote I would.

Despite all his public foibles and some base idealogical differences I have with Dave Wiegle, I admire, maybe even adore, his ability to squarely look at his own humanness and write so succinctly about it. I'm guessing these are two qualities Palin, regardless if her life is cavity searched to the depths of pointlessness, will never possess.

I don't know if I would admit having voted for her if I did.

Seriously... how could you NOT have seen that she was fucking loony? I don't get it.

HIV-Blocking Antibodies Stop 9 in 10 Strains, U.S. Study Finds

An AIDS vaccine may be one step closer after scientists found antibodies in the blood of a patient that kill more than 90 percent of HIV strains, according to a study in the online version of the journal Science.

Obviously, this research must be stopped immeadiately, as it goes against God's plan.

How can you be sure your political judgements have improved since that vote?

16 Targetpractice  Thu, Jul 8, 2010 12:12:25pm

Yeah, I'd feel sympathy for Sarah if it weren't for the fact that she brought most of this shit on herself. Between her comments to the media, her Tweets, and other actions, it's hard to see her as a "victim" in this whole affair. You can't call attention to yourself, and then whine that the only news about you is bad news.

It's not necessarily a change in one's judgment abilities. It could be the availability of additional information.

That's right. But politically, hysteria works. People in the middle who want to have a reasoned debate will always be ignored by highly motivated partisans, who have amassed tremendous power at both ends of the spectrum.

"She brought this on herself" is not the way to go here. Each case is a case, and Palin's wrongdoing doesn't justify anyone else's.

Charles -

From my experience "Reality" - Like War - is something one would rather not look for - YET - something that finds you whether you like it or not. Part of the "reality" of posting THIS missive is FireFox 4 Beta. Had to try this one, seems good, AND I am not yet used to the "Chrome" look in FireFox. Perhaps a merger of the two is in the air. -S-
