As I walk through
This wicked world
Searchin’ for light in the darkness of insanity.
I ask myself
Is all hope lost?
Is there only pain and hatred, and misery?
And each time I feel like this inside,
There’s one thing I wanna know:
What’s so funny ‘bout Peace, Love, and Understanding?

The funny part about it all is that as monkeys with too-large brains we find those things tedious beyond endurance.

Humans would rather bathe in blood than suffer five minutes' boredom.

Thank God for cable.

As a lot of people know, I just moved to France. I'm totally American though. And yes, you see a ton of Muslims in various garb from different cultures in the Paris metro and in some parts of Paris.

But... "...they will take away our freedom and they will do to America what they did to Europe."

What exactly have they done to Europe? I sure have seen a lot of them, but I haven't seen what they've "done" yet.

Maybe it's just me? But as an American non-European/French person living here recently, you'd think I'd be even more sensitive to some sort of majorly anti-democratic change. And again, I'm not seeing it....

In Christine the Anti-Wanker, the Jacobins among the GOP have chosen an unelectable liar. Her financial prevarications alone will be enough to bring her to her knees.

It will be fun to watch.

Christine O'Donnell is a Tolkienite

in 2003, she wrote a paper and later gave a lecture at The Heritage Foundation expounding upon the role of women in the books.
...
O'Donnell calls Arwen "the epitomy of femininity. She is beautiful, gentle, long-suffering. When her beloved goes out to battle she demonstrates devotion and faith, utterly believing that they will be reunited. She is there for him. Her greatest contribution to the war of the rings is the strength that she provides to the future king.

Now, to me, that says a lot about women and a lot about the role of supporting your man. Yet, in the movie, Peter Jackson had to change that, as if her softer side was offensive to women."
...
Sadly, O'Donnell's Tolkienism probably does not extend into Elvish-speaking, New Zealand-touring territory, since she revealed in her lecture that she had not seen the third movie. She also admitted that the real force behind the paper was her niece, who was working as her intern at the time and exhibited a truly impressive breadth of Tolkien expertise when she supplemented O'Donnell's commentary during the lecture.

Genuinely, not sure. I sure hear a lot about Europe's suffering under the Horde, but I am never sure how seriously to take it, seeing as it comes from the same sort of people who believe that their essential freedoms have been stripped from them by the Obama administration. I certainly do not see evidence that there's been any move away from democracy in Europe, certainly not one caused by Muslim immigrants.

Also, a lot of this crap is verbatim what they were saying about Hindu immigrants to England in the 80s, which was generally BS.

Well, yeah. All the instructors are seasoned chefs and something like 80% of instruction is hands on, plus there's the reputation of the school itself that carries its own weight.

While I completely agree that I'd save $$ at a community college, is that enough to at least get my foot in the door. In other words, is the education taken seriously by employers. What would you suggest I do to determine this? Seeking your advice (or anyone reading) is all.

Looks the Pope's visit to the UK has started off on the wrong foot:

Pope to begin visit amid row over aide's "third world" comments

Pope Benedict XVI will arrive in Britain today to begin the first ever papal state visit to the UK.

[...]

But the visit has been overshadowed by Cardinal Walter Kasper, a senior aide to the Pope, who has pulled out of the trip after saying arriving at Heathrow airport was like landing in a "Third World country". He told a German newspaper: "England today is a secularised and pluralist country. When you land at Heathrow airport, you sometimes think you've landed in a Third World country." He also complained of an "aggressive new atheism" that had spread through Britain.

The Vatican insisted that the cardinal had not intended "any kind of slight" and had simply pulled out due to illness. Officials claimed his "Third World" comment referred to the UK's multiethnic society.

In a statement, the Pope's spokesman Father Federico Lombardi said Kasper "had meant to refer to the fact that from the moment of arrival in London airport - as happens in many big metropolises of the world today, but in London particularly because the unique role played over time by the UK's capital - you realise from the outset that you are in a country in which many human realities of the most diverse provenances and conditions meet and mingle; a crucible of today's humanity, with its diversity and problems".

Got that?

Meg Whitman, the Republican candidate for California governor, has surpassed New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg for the highest personal contribution in American campaign history.

Whitman's campaign reported another $15 million contribution late Tuesday, bringing her personal donation to $119 million.

The billionaire former eBay chief executive's spending surpasses the previous record of $108 million set by Bloomberg in his bid for a third term last year. [...]

Mid-term elections here turn out a little over 8 million votes for the Governor's office. Even if she does as well as Arnold (and I don't expect her to do so) and gets 4.8 million votes, that means she would have already spent about $25/vote.

Sarah Palin Advises Christine O’Donnell To Go Rogue From Her Own Campaign, Reveals Clandestine Calls In 2008

The GOP civil war continued on Fox News prime time Wednesday night (9/15/10) as Sarah Palin threw some jabs at Karl Rove for not supporting Delaware’s Palin-blessed, Republican Senate primary winner, Christine O’Donnell. Palin, obviously feeling like a queen maker who had just unseated King Rove, went on to offer O’Donnell advice to ignore her handlers and “speak to the American people… through Fox News.” Then, recounting the bad old days of the 2008 campaign, Palin said to O'Reilly, “Remember I used to have to sneak in my phone calls to you?” O’Reilly did not point out that while the 2008 campaign may have been a boon for Palin, personally, Palin going rogue did nothing to help McCain actually get elected.

Palin began by talking tough. “It wouldn’t be prudent of me… to get into a tussle with Karl Rove… but what the heck, let’s go ahead and do it.” Of course, Palin makes a habit of attacking people and institutions when she doesn’t have to face them.

Palin continued, “Some of these good old boys – and I have nothing against Karl Rove personally, you know he’s the (she made quotation marks in the air with her hands) expert but Bill, some of these folks, they are saying that people like Christine O’Donnell and others, Tea Party Americans, can’t win because they don’t want them to win. Because they know that a Christine O’Donnell, a Joe Miller from Alaska and gubernatorial races like Susana Martinez and Nikki Haley – these folks are gonna shake it up and they are going to do what is right for America, not necessarily what is right for a political party machine.”

Palin completely rejected Rove’s argument, made via O’Reilly, that O’Donnell is unelectable. “Some of those in the hierarchy of the political machine… they are very much into control and titles and egos and everything else. I’m not saying that, again, about, personally, Karl Rove, but I think that that’s just inherently in the nature of the hierarchy of a political machine.”

Palin also insisted that O’Donnell is not extreme but “just wants a smaller, smarter government.”

Then Palin broke out her advice for candidate O’Donnell. After O’Reilly complained that O’Donnell’s “people” had turned down his invitation for her to come on his show (she later appeared on Hannity), Palin said, “She’s going to have to learn very quickly to dismiss what some of her handlers want. Remember what happened to me in the VP? Remember I used to have to sneak in my phone calls to you?”

O’Reilly said he remembered getting calls from her late at night, thinking it was a prank.

“(O'Donnell's) going to have to learn that," said newly minted "strategist" Palin. "Yeah, very quickly. She’s going to have to dismiss that. Go with her gut. Get out there, speak to the American people. Speak through Fox News and let the independents who are tuning into you, let them know what it is that she stands for.”

Video at the link (I dare you to watch it, Cato!)

So, Palin wants O'Donnell to be herself... and ignore handlers.

Obviously Palin thinks O'Donnell can handle herself... um, oh wait...

Shooting the Horse
by David Shumate

I unlatch the stall door, step inside, and stroke the silky neck
of the old mare like a lover about to leave. I take an ear in
hand, fold it over, and run my fingers across her muzzle. I
coax her head up so I can blow into those nostrils. All part of
the routine we taught each other long ago. I turn a half turn,
pull a pistol from my coat, raise it to that long brow with the
white blaze and place it between her sleepy eyes. I clear my
throat. A sound much louder than it should be. I squeeze the
trigger and the horse's feet fly out from under her as gravity
gives way to a force even more austere, which we have named
mercy.

122 Guanxi88  Thu, Sep 16, 2010 7:16:17am

In continuing developments, Guanxi88's long-term plan to establish himself as the booze & baccy baron of Guadalupe County continue to move forward. This week, he unwrapped the first of the carottes of some longer-term stored baccy, and found it had converted, by pressure and the absence of oxygen, to a dense, dark, head-spinning tobacco, suitable for the post-apocalyptic man-about-town.

Experiments with pressure-fermentation of tobacco using a hydraulic press and rock-maple forms show great promise of reducing processing time and manpower, with a two-pound plug requiring only 20 minutes from de-stemming to final storage, shaving weeks off the time required by the slower carotte/perique process.

Put this in the spin-off links as well......but our illustrious Texas SBOE is at it again (Texas SBOE Spots pro-Islam bias). It is rooted out bias for Islam in text books. Some real interesting points if you read deep into the article. The alleged bias is in texts that Texas currently doesn't even buy. Second, the SBOE members bruting this about are concerned that the evils of Christianity are pejoratively (disparagingly) mentioned while the same evils in Islam are mentioned mildly or in a positive light.

Well at least they are not advocating that Christianity's evils be toned down only Islam's be made to look dastardly as well.

And oh by the way, in case you haven't figured it out, several of the more prominent conservative SBOE members are up for re-election in November!

First hand information is always best. Talk with potential employers. They will give you sound advice plus you are making contacts for the future.

The Case for a 'Repeal Amendment'

re: #130 Taqyia2Me

Peace?
With Hamas, Hizbollah, al Qaeda, Muslim brotherhood, Taliban, et al --- not likely at all.

They are such peaceful folks.

Hamas marks peace talks with terror film

Hamas has made a film showing the imagined destruction of Israel.

The terrorist organisation chose the launch of the second stage of the revived peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians to release the video.

"Apocalypse Tomorrow", created by Hamas operatives, has had more than 45,000 views. It depicts Israeli sites such as the Supreme Court falling to missile attacks and the streets of Tel Aviv laid to waste.

A Palestinian says: “Inshallah, the Jihad will take back the homeland", while students tell a teacher they want to join the fight for “liberation”.

Towards the end of the footage cars waving Palestinian flags drive triumphantly down a main road in Tel Aviv and a Hamas presenter takes a seat on an Israeli news channel.

Hamas has vowed to launch concerted attacks on Israel to ensure the peace talks do not succeed.

These are the people Jimmy Carter trusts.

I guess that means Al D'Amato is the guy? He, along with Ed Koch and Carl McCall have come out against Carl Paladino - all but saying the guy is a nutjob who has no business being governor of New York.

Paladino turned around and called him a tool of Andy Cuomo, which can't be further from the truth, but that's what he's going with.

Yes. Or rather, I think they're fuckers for using such a lame campaign tactic in the first place.

In this case, however, Rove was right. O'Donnell is a moronic candidate with no fitness for office at all. And now he's endorsing her.

Republicans have not realized that the Eleventh Commandment has a coda:

11a. And if you let total whackjobs be Republican candidates, you will lose all credibility and elections.

This may be true, but the topic was about Rove "walking it back" and singling out this situation as if it were anything other than what always happens in politics. Hilary supporters bashed Obama, but when Obama won they got behind him. It is silly to act like Rove is behaving in any way outside the norm in politics.

It is different. See Lawhawks post above. There have been plenty of times where the Democratic or Republican primary-selected candidate has not been supported by the party at large. Lots of times. So, I'm sorry, but what you're saying is not true. It does not always happen.

CHRISTINE O'DONNELL: Now, he said that it's based on fact. I just want to point out a couple things. First of all, they use carbon dating, as an example, to prove that something was millions of years old. Well, we have the eruption of Mt. Saint Helens and the carbon dating test that they used then would have to then prove that these were hundreds of millions of years younger, when what happened was they had the exact same results on the fossils and canyons that they did the tests on that were supposedly 100 millions of years old. And it's the kind of inconsistent tests like this that they're basing their 'facts' on.

On the Advice of the FBI, Cartoonist Molly Norris Disappears From View

You may have noticed that Molly Norris' comic is not in the paper this week. That's because there is no more Molly.

The gifted artist is alive and well, thankfully. But on the insistence of top security specialists at the FBI, she is, as they put it, "going ghost": moving, changing her name, and essentially wiping away her identity. She will no longer be publishing cartoons in our paper or in City Arts magazine, where she has been a regular contributor. She is, in effect, being put into a witness-protection program—except, as she notes, without the government picking up the tab. It's all because of the appalling fatwa issued against her this summer, following her infamous "Everybody Draw Mohammed Day" cartoon.

Pope offers 'hand of friendship' to UK

He added: "Today, the United Kingdom strives to be a modern and multicultural society. In this challenging enterprise, may it always maintain its respect for those traditional values and cultural expressions that more aggressive forms of secularism no longer value or even tolerate."

The Pope also praised Britain's fight against Hitler's "atheist extremism", saying that "Britain and her leaders stood against a Nazi tyranny that wished to eradicate God from society and denied our common humanity to many, especially the Jews, who were thought unfit to live".

The Church's child abuse has created more atheists than anything else in history. Maybe he should focus on that.

The usual revisionism meant to deflect attention to Pope Pius XII and the German people during the time. So instead of blaming the German culture of the time he blames a nebulous atheist culture which was almost non-existent. Most of the anti-Semitism of the 3rd Reich and Germany had its roots with Martin Luther.

And like Michael Steele, ignoring real issues and instead simply trying to deflect criticism towards various selected scapegoat outsider groups is no way to lead. The more knowledgeable (both insiders and outsiders) realize what you are doing and are thus more wary of your organization as a result since it shows a complete lack of principles.
