Fox Nation Links to Onion Satire, Readers Don’t Get Joke, Go Nuts

Wingnuts • Views: 33,550

The editors at Fox Nation may have realized they were posting a link to a satirical article from the Onion, but they curiously forgot to mention it to the readers of their website.

And the vast majority of those readers had no idea whatsoever that it was a joke, because it was an anti-Obama article. That’s the shiny object that always captures their attention.

Yes, the Fox Nation editors were apparently so enamored with an Onion piece from today entitled “Frustrated Obama Sends Nation Rambling 75,000-Word E-Mail” that they reposted the first two paragraphs in their culture section with nary a sign as to its fictional nature. The only clue that this wasn’t real (besides a quick peek at your inbox to confirm that Barack Obama hasn’t been emailing you) was a link at the bottom instructing readers to go to TheOnion.com for the real story. This tiny link was, unfortunately, not enough for the vast majority of FN readers. At least, that’s the way it seems from the comments section.

Here’s a sampling:

“If this story is correct, that he did send out this email, it is very concerning about his current state of mental health. I am surprised he would be allowed to send something like this out and if he is not functioning very well why there isn’t some attention being paid to his current state.”

[…]

“Hey, you fraud: Get out. Your presidency is an affront to the exceptionalism of America. Pathetic loser.”

[…]

“HAHAHAHAHAHA OBUMMA – Un-raveled. EPIC FAILURE. IMPEACH it.”

The comments at Fox Nation are among the craziest of the right wing web (and that’s really saying something), as we just mentioned yesterday.

UPDATE at 11/26/10 4:50:13 pm:

And now the article is gone from the Fox Nation website.

Fox Nation IS a joke. Oh, and a 75,000 word email would be something like 300 pages in print. Hopefully, mama grifter will have seen this story and think it’s real when she quotes it on TV next week. (She probably has no idea how many words are in her own books).

I enjoyed the one poster who seemed to think this article was evidence of liberals’ stupidity. Such a shame when irony is wasted on the intellectually dim.

I see they’ve made their comment section actually usable now. You can post comments and have them actually show up, and there’s a “liking” system for comments. hmmmmm… Time to make an account I guess and go wild.

Well, when a demographic of people consider Limbaugh’s racist remarks to be satire, it’s not hard to imagine them incapable of recognizing real satire when it bites them on the nose.

They don’t think it’s satire…they don’t even know what satire is. They think the word ‘satire’ is a valid defense against getting called on their racism - because hey, they don’t own slaves, so how can they be racist?

Their ignorance knows no bounds.

It looks like Fox Nation has disappeared the story from their site; posting it may have actually been a mistake on the editors’ part, because the ‘Culture’ section there seems to be one big outrage/victimization smorgasbord.

how can a so called news network run a website as dishonest as FoxNation? The whole theme of Foxnation is to spin news events(or make them up from thin air) to make democrats and the President look bad. It’s a propaganda website and its filled with some of the most vile and nutty comments from its readers. Yet nothing is said by the mainstream media about this website that Fox News is running. The media is pretty silent about it. Where’s the expose on 60 minutes or Dateline or Nightline (pick your mass media news magazine) that exposes this violation of journalistic ethics?

I know that Jonah Goldberg is not well-liked here, but here he hits the nail right on the head:

One traveler presented with this new reality protested, “Don’t touch my junk,” and a media sensation ensued.

Personally, I think the controversy is overdone. I don’t love the policy, but the outrage seems a bit misplaced. I’d bet that the vast majority of TSA employees do not want to touch your junk — or mine. And if any TSA agent gives the slightest indication that junk-touching is his or her favorite part of the job, he or she should be fired immediately.

Obviously, the first people to blame for this mess are the murderers. Without them, flying wouldn’t be the soul-killing experience it is.

But we’re partially to blame, too. Politicians are torn between two legitimate impulses: to protect us from very real dangers as best they can, and to be liked by us. Unfortunately, these impulses often conflict. If we weren’t in danger, we wouldn’t need airport screening, electronic or otherwise. The Black Forest–cake deliveryman on his way to Grandma’s for Oktoberfest in Orlando would have neither his cake nor his Schwarzwälderkirschtortenlieferantenhut searched, never mind the inseam of his lederhosen.

But the murderers won’t comply, so we need to search people. The electronic scanners were intended to make such searches as tolerable as possible.

Read the whole thing.

Man, Fox Nation is barely above Free Republic in terms of content, and the comments are exactly at Freeper level.

I don’t watch Fox so I forget how blatantly insane they are.

Holder: Give Me Your DNA

They turn a story about how Holder wants the more reliable DNA evidence to be used even when someone is pleading guilty— to prove that they may be innocent— into an attack against him. It’s a blatant distortion. If you just read the short version on “Fox Nation”, you come away with a completely reversed, distorted view of the story. Only when you actually read the full thing— past the opening paragraphs, which few people do, does it become clear.

What assholes.

Senate Judiciary Committee chairman Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., commended Holder “for reversing the Bush administration policy of demanding that defendants waive their right to DNA testing as a requirement of certain plea negotiations.”

The Innocence Protection Act in 2004, which Leahy sponsored, allows convicted individuals access to DNA testing if it could produce evidence raising a reasonable probability that the individual did not commit the offense.
The 2004 law applies to evidence that was not previously tested and generally requires it to be done within 36 months of conviction.
“I authored the Innocence Protection Act to ensure that the guilty are punished and the innocent are exonerated,” Leahy said in a statement. “The attorney general’s decision restores proper prosecutorial discretion and furthers my intent in passing that landmark law.”

They probably sit on trains and fantasize about beating up young black kids, but otherwise are pretty impotent.

The NFL? Okay, I think our pro football players are good athletes, sure…but put them on a field playing Aussie Rules Football for 90 minutes (without pads) and let’s see how many are still standing. No time-outs, no play clocks, and constant motion…oh, and they hit each other just as hard as our players do.

Smaller, yes, but not slower. A 300lb lineman wouldn’t last five minutes in an AFL game. The reason you don’t see anyone over 190lbs is because you can’t carry that much mass for that long in a full contact sport.

sure. this is what makes the ‘better athlete’ question so hard. i usually try to simplify it in my head to speed, stamina, strength, and coordination/athleticism/leaping ability.

AFL players win the stamina category…but that’s about it.

it’s also why i’d say that professional basketball players are the best all-around athletes in the world. many are off of the charts in all four categories.

What a stud..But each sport requires different skill levels..
Take a soccer team on the court against the Lakers..Lucky to score 10 points..Take a Rugby team against the SF Giants playing baseball.. No chance…

Nelson was traveling from California to Austin, Texas, when he was stopped at the checkpoint at about 9 a.m.

Border Patrol agents conducting a search of the singer’s tour bus found about six ounces of marijuana, which Nelson claimed was his, according to Hudspeth County Sheriff Arvin West.

Nelson was taken into custody and booked into the Hudspeth County Jail on a $2,500 bond. West said that Nelson posted the bond and was back on the road to Austin by 1:30 p.m. Today.

The average AFL ruckman is over 6’6”, has to outjump people his height repeatedly, plays a roving midfield role for the full time, and also has to have multiple ball handling skills. Odds are he cannot outsprint Calvin Johnson, but apart from that, they are eminently comparable.

And, unlike every player in the NFL save a quarterback, he also has to make his own decisions, which automatically makes him a vast improvement over any NFL player.

again, i agree that different sports require different traits. but there are a few guys like this in the NFL. unless i’m quite mistaken, there are no such equivalents in the AFL.

Fair enough - there will always be standouts.

I would put it this way - AFL is a sport for 800meter runners. The NFL is a sport for 100meter sprinters. Different builds are required/stamina levels - but the part that every AFL player is expected to play in the game and the non-existence of specials teams/offense/defence who play half the game each is the deciding factor for me.

All those guys run miles every game.

I’m sorry for him…I know I’ve always been against legalization of pot because of kids..But really..If you are over 21 or a musician..They should just leave you alone…

That’s a terrible reason to support allowing the government to continue to destroy the lives of adults over a mild intoxicant. Pot is very much available to kids now, and much less harmful than alcohol.

i would guess that i have slightly more mainstream tastes than you, which is neither good nor bad…and i should probably be more specific by region, but it’s a rare year when the number of foreign movies that i really look forward to watching exceed the number of domestic movies that i really look forward to watching.

oh, and Star Wars ftw;)

Oh, I love good American sci-fi! And two of my favorite directors are American (Anaofsky, Nolan) but man, the number of foreign movies that keep being “remade” and the number of foreign TV shows that get remade… it’s like we just have the most capital and the biggest entertainment industry so we can make more and bigger things happen. Really small foreign films and TV just seem way more creative and risky, by the time it gets some money behind it and it’s big american thing, all the corners are rounded down, everything becomes all smooth and mass market. Some stuff excepted, good TV on HBO and AMC I wish i had the time to watch

More love for Alien than Star Wars, star wars is kitsch to me now, Alien is fine art

(I think Alien is a better movie than Star Wars)

Perhaps..But there is a chance none of them would live long enough to last 90 minutes…I could put together a roster from the NFL that is athletic enough to destroy any AFL team you could come up with..It’s not play school with the NFL.. You will get your ass knocked out…
*wink*

Maybe in a gang fight, sure. But Aussie Rules football requires multiple skills, longterm endurance, and actual decision making capacity. You might, if you used the entire NFL’s worth of rosters, put together a team that would be as athletic as any given Aussie Rules team. But none of them would have the multiple skills necessary to put together even the most basic kick and catch. Sure, part of that is training, but the NFL requires only the most basic, focused skills, and there is no guarantee that an athlete who can perform one skill well will have the capacity to perform many skills well. Frankly, every time I watch NFL players attempt lateral passes, I cringe, because under-12 girls rugby teams do it better. Your best bet would be to put together a team consisting entirely of quarterbacks, because then you might have a team that can make their own decisions and have enough skill variety to compete.

Arresting people over pot has zero influence on whether your kids will be stoners, but if they do discover that pot is mostly harmless, they might believe they’ve been lied to about other drugs as well. Prohibition is dangerous because it lumps mostly harmless marijuana in with extremely dangerous drugs

Pot is everywhere. Right now the government can completely screw people over for possessing a plant. I find that completely unacceptable.

exactly, the “real” gateway is the lifestyle. if you associate with X simply to get weed, X is now in your social network and of X also sells or knows where to get harder stuff, etc etc

Whereas for booze, just go to the store. No “gateway”.

Yes. My understanding is that chewing the leaves has a mild stimulant effect. It’s when concentrated into cocaine that it becomes a problem.

A chemical isn’t more saintly (odd word choice I think, Catholic chemicals?) from a plant. If anything, coming from a lab is better because we know the exact chemical composition. You mistake me for someone else, possibly some hippies I met years ago.

But yea, I was a stoner in school, but like drinking and regular partying/clubbing grew out of it, which I think usually happens.

You mistake me for someone else, possibly some hippies I met years ago.

alrighty. i agree with you on the part about lab chems.

i think that our difference might be found in the part where it’s nigh unto impossible to outlaw a distilled plant product without also outlawing the plant. so if you wish to allow the plant but ban the product, it’s my understanding that you’d be even less effective than our already ineffective prohibitions.

We can control substances without outlawing the source plants. Limits on number of plants grown, and prohibition of dangerous end-products would likely be part of any legalization laws.

I don’t expect any currently banned plant other than marijuana to be legalized, and don’t do any kind of work to promote legalization of opiates of cocaine, so I don’t think my belief that no plant itself should be prohibited will cause anyone any trouble ;>

Escondido house where explosive ingredients were discovered is considered too dangerous to reenter

Authorities are slowly trying to piece together how — and why — a 54-year-old Serbian emigre acquired large quantities of explosive ingredients that could be used to make the kind of bombs favored by terrorists, including insurgents trying to kill U.S. troops in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The work of a squad of local, state and federal explosives experts is being made more difficult because the one-story, stucco house in a leafy neighborhood in Escondido where the materials were found is considered too dangerous to reenter.

Investigators carted off several computers and numerous written documents in hopes of finding a motive for the alleged actions of George Djura Jakubec, a naturalized U.S. citizen, who now faces 26 bomb-making charges and two charges of bank robbery, all felonies.

FedEx finds missing radioactive package

(CNN) — FedEx on Friday found a package containing radioactive material that went missing a day earlier at one of its shipping stations in Knoxville, Tennessee, the company said.

The package contained a radioactive rod used in CT scans, which use X-rays to create images of patients’ bodies.

The shipment was lost in transit between its origination point, a hospital in North Dakota, and the equipment’s manufacturer in Tennessee.

FedEx spokeswoman Sandra Munoz said the rod was enclosed in a metal cylinder that was itself enclosed in a rectangular box. That rectangular box had originally been placed in another box that had the shipping information on it.

“We are trying to track down how the package became detached from the original shipment,” Munoz said.

Very true. After the Clone Wars, Emperor Palpatine had most of the Spaartai Cylinders used to grow clones destroyed, save for a group of them that he had mothballed at Mount Tantiss on the planet Wayland. In Timothy Zahn’s Heir to the Empire book trilogy, Imperial Grand Admiral Tharwn traveled to Wayland and used those remaining cylinders to turn out clone troops he used to launch his campaign against the New Republic.

That hypothesis discounts the role of more advanced technology (i.e., both easier and less expensive space flight) and a more hostile social environment in the future.

You don’t need to get there all that quickly if you have sufficiently advanced ability to thrive for long periods of time in interstellar space. I.e., it doesn’t matter if it takes 1000 years if we have the ability to build a city that can generate enough energy and carry enough mass to be a sel-sustaining colony. It seems unlikely where we are now, but it’s at least possible if we are willing to accept that it won’t be in a single human lifetime or anything like that.

Regardless, we have a LOT of room in this solar system to use, and the sun is rather young. We don’t need to worry about interstellar travel yet. We need to work out how to live in space indefinitely first.

re: #278 Fozzie Bear

That hypothesis discounts the role of more advanced technology (i.e., both easier and less expensive space flight) and a more hostile social environment in the future.

I tend to agree with Hawking. If we want to be around for the long haul, we (humanity) need to be in more than one place.

In the long-haul sure. If we’re not wiped out by a meteor, gamma-ray burst, or ourselves, eventually the sun will change enough that the planet can’t support life. Doesn’t mean we can do anything about it in our lifetimes.

I think advanced tech is more likely to let us create sentient machines that can continue on when we’re gone, rather than something to transport large quantities of us meat-bags to another world. We’re pretty delicate.

Of course by that point the machines may be able to manufacture new people on another world.

Of course that’s a resource vs. population problem. Pandemics, climate, asteroids, world wars notwithstanding. I really don’t sit around thinking about the end of mankind.

i agree that the best defense against a worldwide calamity is to be living on more than one world. i disagree that such a calamity is imminent, and also disagree that imminent mass colonization is feasible or wise.

I think it would be extremely unwise not to work diligently and expend serious resources to developing necessary technology to do this. There have been mass extinctions before, and there will be again, and we would be foolish to think our future as a species is secure.

I’m not saying we need to start building space arks or something, I just mean we need to solve the problems involed with actually living in space for whole lifetimes. How to build things, how to mine and refine, how to get necessary elements, etc, etc. And how to do it all without relying on things we take with us from Earth.

Stalking is a term commonly used to refer to unwanted, obsessive attention by individuals (and sometimes groups of people) to others. Stalking behaviors are related to harassment and intimidation. The word “stalking” is used, with some differing meanings, in psychology and psychiatry and also in some legal jurisdictions as a term for a criminal offense. It may also be used to refer to criminal offences or civil wrongs that include conduct which some people consider to be stalking, such as those described in law as “harassment” or similar terms.

Who said you need to get tens of thousands of people off the planet any time soon? That would be absurd. We need to develop the tech to trivialize getting there first. We need A.I., materials tech, energy generation tech, etc, etc.

We are going to end up in space if we don’t kill ourselves as a species, eventually. Not all of us, of course, but people breed quite rapidly.

Types of stalkers:

Simple Obsessional:

• A prior relationship exists between the victim and the stalker which includes the following:
a) Acquaintance, neighbor, customer, professional relationship, dating, and lover

• The stalking behavior begins after either:
a) The relationship has gone “sour”, or
b) The offending individual perceives some mistreatment
c) The stalker begins a campaign either to rectify the schism, or to seek some type of retribution

I would tend to agree, that is the natural endpoint. Regardless, I don’t think the risk of a complete die-off of humanity is necessarily the only possibility that needs to be avoided. I think it wouldn’t be that hard for a severe enough cataclysm to occur which would cause us to regress back quite a bit technologically, without actually killing us all.

I took a quick skim through my regular right wing extremist sites (stormfront, Paulian forums, Alex Jones, etc) and noticed a trend. Soon after the election a story would pop up on stormfront and would take a few weeks to filter up through the mainstream right wing blogs and then on to fox and drudge. That trend has reversed itself. Most of the extremist fringe sites are covering stories that originated on Fox, Drudge and mainstream wingnut sites a few days ago. I don’t know what to make of that.

No Tea Bagging jokes….

An alliance of opposites takes on Pentagon

Earlier this year, Representatives Barney Frank, the unabashedly liberal Democrat from Newton, and Ron Paul, an outspoken libertarian Republican from Texas, formed an unlikely alliance aimed at slashing the defense budget to trim the deficit.

Initially, their proposed 16 percent cut over a decade got a cold reception on Capitol Hill, where many Democrats and even the most fiscally conservative Republicans view the Pentagon budget as basically off-limits. But now, with talk of deep cuts in Social Security and Medicare, and as a Tea Party-infused strain of the Republican party grows more powerful, their views are gaining traction.

Tea Party!

I think what happened is the Tea parties and Fox turned on Bush after the elections. Beck often referrers to Bush as part of the progressive cloward piven conspiracy. Obama has also continued a lot of Bush’s policies, wars, gitmo, patriot act, bailouts, etc. In hindsight the wingnuts think Alex Jones was ahead of the curve.

UPDATED: Schools Threat Suspect Is Green Party Member

The woman charged by the FBI with making a threat that led to the lockdown of more than 300 Broward County schools after hearing the words of right-wing talker Joyce Kaufman isn’t a member of the Tea Party — she’s a member of the Green Party.

Ellisa Martinez was arrested yesterday for making an emailed threat and a phone call to Kaufman’s radio station, 850-AM, on November 10. In the email, Martinez feigned agreement with the fiery arch-conservative rhetoric of Kaufman and Sarah Palin, but she’s she’s officially on the other side of the ledger. According to the Pasco County Supervisor of Elections Office, Martinez is a member of the Green Party, a progressive left-wing group focused on environmental issues.

That’s why in this country the “Green Party” is just a joke. Unlike in several other nations which have Green parties, where there is an attempt at serious governance (from an ecological perspective), here in the US the “Green Party” is just a catch-all for nuts of all kinds.

Just so. Even if Sarah Palin were elected president, Alex Jones would attack her. He would not be able to the role of supporter of the party in power. Neither would Glenn Beck.

The reason I think neither of them could adapt is because its actually something of a downgrade. If you are a show host supporting the party in power, you’re mostly dancing to a tune called by the politicians. Your main role is to support their programs and initiatives. Yes, you can sometimes move an issue onto the agenda yourself, but you will often find yourself having to act in a supporting role. Neither Beck nor Jones would find that role at all attractive.

Well, they’re making a mistake. If Jones lives long enough to see another republican elected POTUS, he’s gonna keep on spewing this rhetoric that the reactionary right seems to be enamored with right now. What will they think of him then?

Hell, the only person that could get elected to the executive office that might not make Jones spew conspiracy theories would be Ron Paul, and I’m not even entirely certain of that.

That’s the only reason why he might not end up with a gig at Fox news. He can behave himself enough to get a seat at the big boy table but without conspiracies about the ruling elite he’s got nothing. He’ll turn on Republicans as soon as they’re elected and even Fox management knows that.

Bwahahahahaha….Dad is really going to regret putting me in charge of the Christmas shopping this year when he gets the credit card bills…

Just to be clear, we aren’t broke (I certainly am not), are about to inherit Mom’s IRA and pension fund, and as a double dipper with both a military and state pension plus social security Dad makes more per month while retired than most people can dream of making from fulltime work nowadays.

So yes I fully intend to spend several thousands of dollars on Christmas presents this year. Something big for my sisters family plus a few individual presents each, something big for my brothers family plus a few individual presents each, and something very nice for my aunt (Dad’s older sister).

I’ll deal with the fallout later, WTF, you can’t take it with you, and I’ll be more surprised than anyone if Dad makes it to next Christmas. He will come around…(at least I certainly hope so). ;)

I really wish the Jones thing would blow up in everyone’s faces that are now linking him as a credible source of info. Sadly, I’m sure they’ll drop him like a hot rock when it suits them, and most of their audience will forget all about them giving Jones’s nuttery a fair hearing.

If he bitches too loudly I’ll just reimburse him, but I don’t think it will come to that. I’m hoping he will catch some of the Christmas spirit and enjoy surprising the family with some nice gifts. Mom used to spend a fair amount every year too but thought that quantity was better than quality, she’d give you over a dozen things, each of which was…well, cheap crap.

I’m thinking everyone will enjoy this year a bit more, well provided Dad doesn’t turn into the Grinch…lol.

But Dad likes watching FNC sometimes just to see what they are raving about.

I’m still trying to decide on what to get him, I’m thinking about a home theater system with rear surround speakers next to him so he does not have to crank the T.V. speakers up so loud to hear the dialogue…maybe.

A large fraction of the Fox news reports, at least on their website, are mostly fake and get the same kind of insane reaction of anti-Obama hatred. It’s not surprising that a satirical piece from the Onion would seem any different to the Fox mob, or get any different reaction from them.
