Well, they’re pulling an all-nighter down there in Cancun.
I think the one thing that will be taken away from this UNFCCC meeting is that that ALBA group (Venezuela, Bolivia, Ecuador, Cuba) have overplayed their hand. Many of the smaller nations are not happy with the ALBA group playing the “consensus” card, which means all parties (193 countries) must agree to a document/outcome in order to go forward. Bolivia in particular has been objecting to documents that others agree upon.

They’re still going in Cancun. It’s basically over, and the President of the meeting basically told Bolivia thanks but no thanks, and accepted what is now being called the “Cancun Accord” (or something like that) as being accepted by the convention (with a note that Bolivia objects.)
The agreement coming out of Cancun essentially says that at next year’s meeting (in South Africa) a next generation of Kyoto Accord will be accepted. It’s a vague enough promise that it could still mean anything.
Right now the oil producers (Saudi, Qatar, etc.) are getting in a last word that CCS (carbon capturing - something that has yet to be shown to be feasible) ought to be noted.
These sort of multilateral negotiations really look bogged down. Even the best of intentions get lost in the mere size of the event. The adopted document doesn’t really accomplish much by way of mitigation of CO2, but it does capture the good will over the advancements in dealing with the deforestation effort and long-term financing.
I do not expect the US Senate to ever accept any international treaty along these lines. If the GOP is still balking a the Law of the Sea Treaty, and now also START, I find it hard to believe they’ll ever accept something that promises money to brown people foreign nations in the Southern Hemisphere.

One thing I didn’t see in yesterday’s Pages was a mention of the hottest November and the hottest Meteorological year (Dec-Nov) on record, according to NASA GISS:
NASA: 2010 Meteorological Year Warmest Ever
The 2010 meteorological year, which ended on 30 November, was the warmest in NASA’s 130-year record, data posted by the agency today shows. Over the oceans as well as on land, the average global temperature for the 12-month period that began last December was 14.65˚C. That’s 0.65˚C warmer than the average global temperature between 1951 and 1980, a period scientists use as a basis for comparison. The 2010 meteorological year was slightly warmer than the previous warmest year, the 2005 calendar year, when the average temperature was 14.53˚C.
In 2010, temperatures measured over land alone were also the warmest ever, with instruments showing a December-November average of 14.85˚C. Combining this warming with above-average ocean temperatures led to the global average of 14.65˚C.
November brought frigid temperatures to certain areas of Europe. But the data, compiled by the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies in New York City, show that, globally, last month was the warmest November ever recorded, nearly 0.96˚C warmer than the 1951 to 1980 average for the month.
According to NASA climatologist and Goddard director James Hansen, the main driver for the increased warmth was the Arctic, where temperatures in Hudson Bay were “10˚C above normal” for November. That month, Hansen says, “sea ice was absent while normally that [body of water] is covered by sea ice.” Water devoid of ice absorbs much more solar radiation than water covered with ice, which reflects much of the radiation back toward space.
The record temperatures occurred despite a moderate occurrence of La Niña, a phenomenon over the Pacific Ocean that tends to lead to cooler temperatures at the surface, affecting the global mean.
GISS data site:
[Link: data.giss.nasa.gov…]
From the graph it looks like November was significantly above the previous record.

Logging in from Airport Wireless. Flight’s been delayed an hour.
Earlier this afternoon I took a “rideabout” across Cebu City. Here the Jeepneys are actually based on several different sizes of regular passenger van (and Isuzu Canter for the biggest ones), depending on the route. Very few of the actual “jeepneys” of the homemade variety. The city also surprisingly has a route numbering system in place, though it needs a map to pair with.
Reminds me of a slightly rustic fusion of Baguio and parts of Manila, coupled with mostly cool and showery weather over the past few days. Been mostly out in the ‘suburbs’ touring furniture manufacturing facilities.

Assange Lawyer: US Spy Charges Appear Imminent
Julian Assange, the WikiLeaks founder already under arrest in London, could soon face U.S. espionage charges, his lawyer told ABC News. The charges would be related to the Espionage Act, Assange’s American lawyer, Jennifer Robinson, told ABC.
“Our position of course is that we don’t believe it applies to Mr. Assange and that in any event he’s entitled to First Amendment protection as publisher of WikiLeaks, and any prosecution under the Espionage Act would in my view be unconstitutional and puts at risk all media organizations in the U.S.,” Robinson told ABC News.
Robinson said a U.S. indictment of Assange was imminent. Assange’s latest troubles follow the publication of more than 250,000 secret diplomatic documents. He is being held without bail in London on allegations of sex crimes in Sweden.
ABC said Justice Department officials declined to comment.

Basically there are two options. They may have done it because they had a hand in his crimes and basically wanted to play it safe at some point, hoping that turning Madoff in would pay off. But I’ve seen no evidence of this and I don’t think they were accused of this. The other option is that it happened as they told, and then it must’ve been excruciatingly difficult for them to inform on their own father, despite the fact that it was the right thing. In such a case they deserve all sympathy, IMHO.

We used to take our daughter to a very large, very empty parking lot of an abandoned building nearby, and let her drive around and get a feel for it.
You can’t take a 16-year-old and put ‘em behind the wheel of a car for the FIRST TIME and expect them to do OK, and the student driving portion of driver’s ed is a joke, 6 hours maybe, not nearly enough time to get them accustomed to it.

When it became obvious to Bernie Madoff that his world was about to crumble around him, he told his sons to turn him in. Whether they knew everything or not is debatable, but turning in their father is probably the main thing that kept them from sharing a cell with him. It took a lot of money and high priced lawyers to avoid a trial and full investigation. Madoff’s confession was a swift move.

A bit of context for the “Russia is for Russians” slogan. In Russian it’s “Россия для русских”, wherein “русские” denotes ethnic Russians. Just a Russian citizen would be “россиянин”. So what this means is “Russia is for [ethnic] Russians”.

A bit of context for the “Russia is for Russians” slogan. In Russian it’s “Россия для русских “, wherein “русские ;” denotes ethnic Russians. Just a Russian citizen would be “россиян ;ин”. So what this means is “Russia is for [ethnic] Russians”.
Russia has never gotten past that sort of chauvinism and it often leads to murder when it appears.

Thanks. They are.
At that time I believed all I had left was choices about how I was going to die.
Thanks to a ‘conservative’ premier (the Canadian equivalent of a state governor) I was evicted from my home. He had cut welfare 23% so I could no longer pay my rent. I got kicked out on a February night in Canada.
So, it seemed to me, I could either die in one of the many ways a homeless person could die in a Canadian winter or I could have my last moments be warm and dry.
Luckily I found enough strength to loosen the belt around my neck and get help. It took a long time to recover. But I’ve never been quite the same. Going that low scars a person, badly.

Chechnya is a special case, IMHO. I don’t think these events will push anyone to Islamism, it happens in Moscow, after all, not in the national republics. What I worry about are the radicalized responses from both sides. It’s a result of the culture clash. Soccer fandom is a breeding ground of right-wing radicalism. Caucasian behavior on average is more conservative, patriarchal than the Russian one, and often results in needless bravado. These factors lead to fights, killings, and, as a final result, to these riots.

I actually never had that problem, according to my parents. My pronunciation has always been good and my vocabulary always greater than most people’s. But while that helps me understand what Dennis Miller is saying, it also means that I have problem with talking past other people.

Diplomat Holbrooke in critical condition, State Department says
U.S. diplomat Richard Holbrooke was in critical condition at George Washington University Hospital in Washington on Saturday after undergoing surgery to repair a tear in his aorta, a State Department spokesman said.Holbrooke, the Obama administration’s special representative for Pakistan and Afghanistan, fell ill Friday morning during a meeting with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and walked down to the department’s medical unit, a senior State Department official said. He was taken by ambulance to the hospital, the official said.
After doctors completed surgery on his aorta Saturday morning, Holbrooke was joined by his family, State Department spokesman P.J. Crowley said.
Holbrooke is a career diplomat best known for brokering the peace agreement between Bosnian factions in 1995 that became the Dayton accords.

I’m not sure what to do here. If the election was a fraud then we have only three choices, none of them good:
1. Prop up a government that we know to be a fraud, and lose credibility for having done so.
2. Do what we have often done the Caribbean and force the government out in favor of new, honest elections run by the UN. This would cause the US to be lambasted for “gunboat diplomacy” but I favor this option as the best in the long run.
3. Quietly start pulling out, considering the situation hopeless. This would abandon Haiti to more misery, but it would prevent us from wasting money or being bogged down there.

True, but that’s the sort of problem that can be addressed. One of the things the UN does do right is oversee elections. If the UN manages an election, it will be free and fair. The other reason to have UN do it is to reduce the accusations in Latin America that the election was rigged to favor the US. Those will get throw if we take action, but giving the UN the lead political role can help counter them.

Did you watch Clinton yesterday? He was pretty good. Yeah, if they don’t settle down and works towards compromise they won’t get anything done in the House. Then you know who will become the party of no. But, some people have forgotten that this is not a one-party nation and that there are in fact people with different POVs whether we like it or not. Ironically, that was the same argument but from the other side prior to election day.

That is never a popular fact on the far sides on the aisle. Compromise depends on the non-crazy members of both parties being able to work with each other. Here’s another person who’s not helping to do that:
TRENDING: Palin warns of new ‘death panels’
“Death Panels” could be back, Sarah Palin says. But this time they are not the creation of the Obama administration. No, these are the handiwork of the bipartisan debt commission.
In an op-ed in the Wall Street Journal, the former Alaska governor takes aim at several of the controversial commission’s recommendations, saying the cuts it proposes “implicitly endorses the use of ‘death panel’-like rationing.”
Today on ‘Sarah Palin’s Alaska”: Sarah falls off the top of the Stupid Tree and hit every branch on the way down.

I can understand the hassle of having to deal with increased tuition costs. But not with the rioting, socialist and Communists alliances, Tony Benn, and George Galloway looming in the background. The UK has run out of money that’s a fact. Socialism cannot exist without capital and the UK has to figure out a way to create that capital the old fashioned way. This is the problem when societies think they can only get by with a service economy.
