South Korea to reportedly start drills in hours, residents go to shelters
South Korea will reportedly start artillery drills in the coming hours which have the potential to start a much larger conflict on the Korean peninsula. The South Korean military plans to fire artillery from the island of Yeonpyeong near the border fo North Korea. The last time the South Koreans conducted similar drills on November 21st the North Koreans barraged the island with over 200 artillery shells killing two South Korean marines and two civilians. While the South Koreans have said they will fire artillery away from the border with North Korea, the North Korean government has still threatened to attack with even more force if the South follows through with their plans.

UN fails to take action on Korea tensions
The U.N. Security Council failed to take action to defuse tensions between North and South Korea on Sunday and diplomats blamed China for refusing to condemn the North for two deadly attacks this year that helped send relations to their lowest point in decades.
At the end of an eight-hour emergency meeting called by Russia, U.S. Ambassador Susan Rice said the vast majority of the 15-member council was insisting on "a clear-cut condemnation" of North Korea but there was no unanimity.
Although diplomats from some countries still need to consult their capitals, Rice said, "I think it's safe to predict that the gaps that remain are unlikely to be bridged." She said she based that assessment on what she heard in the closed-door meetings.

My neighbors at the time were little old Italian ladies. One told me that there used to be slate roofs on the houses on our block. When she was a little girl, a guy who was a Dr. for the mob (he preformed abortions on the mob hookers and checked their VD) told all his neighbors to stay away from their houses one night as he was going to blow up his own home for the insurance. He did, and all the slate roofs broke.

South Korea orders residents to take shelter in anticipation of drills
While the United Nations' Security Council wrangled over growing tensions in the Korean peninsula, South Korea ordered thousands to find shelter in preparation for the South's planned live-fire military exercises, which could take place within hours, the military announced.
In South Korea, an approximate 8,000 residents have been ordered to take cover in Yeonpyeong, Baengnyeong, Daecheong, Socheong and Udo as the hours draw closer to South Korea's military drill, scheduled to take place at 11 p.m. EST Sunday, 1 p.m. Monday local time.

S.Korea to Switch DMZ Floodlights Back On
The military has decided to switch on a floodlight tower at Aegibong Peak on the western frontline for the first time in seven years, amid fears that the North is getting ready to shoot at the contraption."We've recently detected signs of the North Korean military watching the tower" at the mouth of the Han River in Gimpo, Gyeonggi Province "as if they are preparing to shoot at it," a government source said Sunday.
About a dozen North Korean officers and soldiers at a time have lined up to watch the tower through binoculars as South Korean personnel prepared to switch it on.

US seizes nearly 11 tons of marijuana aboard train from Mexico
Federal marijuana distribution conspiracy charges were filed Thursday against seven defendants arrested on Wednesday during what is believed to be the largest seizure ever of marijuana in the Chicago area - conservatively estimated at about 21,800 pounds, or nearly 11 tons. The drugs were packed into six railroad cars from Mexico that arrived at a warehouse in south suburban Chicago Heights earlier this month. The marijuana is estimated to have a value of about $22 million.

It's easy once you get the hang of a few basic principles. One of the main reasons I can keep wight off so easy is that I never eat in restaurants (maybe a few times a year) and I never buy processed food in the store. Make it from scratch and you should have no problem saving lots of money and keeping thin.

When is snows here I'll encounter people either going too fast or too slow. Too slow can be annoying but at least it's not as dangerous. If a lot of people are going slow there's always one guy that freaks out and passes everyone like a maniac.

One more beer quote...
"Well ya see, Norm, it's like this... A herd of buffalo can only move as fast as the slowest buffalo. And when the herd is hunted, it is the slowest and weakest ones at the back that are killed first. This natural selection is good for the herd as a whole, because the general speed and health of the whole group keeps improving by the regular killing of the weakest members. In much the same way, the human brain can only operate as fast as the slowest brain cells. Excessive intake of alcohol, as we know, kills brain cells. But naturally, it attacks the slowest and weakest brain cells first. In this way, regular consumption of beer eliminates the weaker brain cells, making the brain a faster and more efficient machine. That's why you always feel smarter after a few beers."

That story reminds me of this poem from 1914. Let me know what you think:
Thomas Hardy : Channel Firing
That night your great guns, unawares,
Shook all our coffins as we lay,
And broke the chancel window-squares,
We thought it was the Judgment-dayAnd sat upright. While drearisome
Arose the howl of wakened hounds:
The mouse let fall the altar-crumb,
The worms drew back into the mounds,The glebe1 cow drooled. Till God called, “No;
It’s gunnery practise out at sea
Just as before you went below;
The world is as it used to be:“And all nations striving strong to make
Red war yet redder. Mad as hatters
They do no more for Christés sake
Than you who are helpless in such matters.“That this is not the judgement-hour
For some of them’s a blessed thing,
For if it were they’d have to scour
Hell’s floor for so much threatening. . . .“Ha, ha. It will be warmer when
I blow the trumpet (if indeed
I ever do; for you are men,
And rest eternal sorely need).”So down we lay again. “I wonder,
Will the world ever saner be,”
Said one, ‘than when He sent us under
In our indifferent century!”And many a skeleton shook his head.
“Instead of preaching forty year,”
My neighbour Parson Thirdly said,
“I wish I had stuck to pipes and beer.”Again the guns disturbed the hour,
Roaring their readiness to avenge,
As far inland as Stourton Tower,
And Camelot, and starlit Stonehenge2.

Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, a Republican from Kentucky, dealt a blow to the administration's hopes for strong bipartisan support, criticizing the treaty's verification system and expressing concern that the pact would limit U.S. missile defense options even though Obama insisted Saturday that the treaty imposes no restrictions on missile defense.
"Rushing it right before Christmas strikes me as trying to jam us," McConnell said on CNN's "State of the Union." "I think that was not the best way to get the support of people like me."

looks like richardson struck some deal with north korea to give them nuclear fuel in exchange for not being jerks about this and also to let inspectors back in
CNN says a sale of spent fuel rods FROM North Korea:
The North agreed to allow international atomic energy agency personnel to return to a nuclear facility in the country and agreed to negotiate the sale of 12,000 fresh fuel rods and ship them to an outside country, presumably to South Korea, said Blitzer, who is traveling with Richardson.
The fuel rods would be enough to make about six to eight nuclear weapons.
This is still an unofficial and private visit on the part of Richardson.

Gaza Flotilla RaidIn "The Flotilla Raid Was Not “Bungled.” The IDF Detailed Its Violent Strategy In Advance" Max Blumenthal reveals and explains content of Israeli newspapers, published a week before the IDF raid, about a planned strategy to intercept incoming ships bringing aid to besieged Gaza along with planned rules of engagement published in Maariv as approved by top Israel government figures.
That's complete bullshit.
Here's a more recent article which is also complete bullshit...
When The ADL Gave White Nationalism A Free Pass, Did “Pro-Israel” Politics Play A Role?
I'm not a Zionist shill, but facts are important. There's a certain amount of room for honest people to debate on the issues but it seems Blumenthal is out of the realm of reality when it comes to Israel.

It's not being a shill to report honestly on the situation. Israel tends to come out better than her enemies in honest accounts because Israel generally conducts herself better.

They'd be better advised to move by day, if they were using artillery or naval units. The south has far better night vision systems.

South Korea on ‘high alert’ after exercises
Before the drills began Seoul’s defence ministry put its air force on alert with the Yonhap News agency reporting that two destroyers have also been deployed in forward positions in the Yellow Sea as a precautionary measure. Civilians on Yeonpyeong and other frontline islands have been ordered to take shelter.
The exercises started shortly after a meeting of the United Nations Security Council broke up without agreement on a joint statement intended to cool the escalating tensions on the Korean peninsula. The failure was blamed on divisions over whether to directly condemn North Korea for the crisis, with Russia and China leading calls for the statement to be neutral.
Seoul was determined to conduct the drill after facing a barrage of domestic criticism for its perceived weak response to the recent North Korean attack. South Korea’s defence minister has said Seoul would hit back hard with its strong air power, if it were attacked again by the North.

Decades Later, Kissinger’s Words Stir Fresh Outrage Among Jews
What has caused many heads to swivel is a recording of Henry A. Kissinger, his national security adviser. Mr. Kissinger is heard telling Nixon in 1973 that helping Soviet Jews emigrate and thus escape oppression by a totalitarian regime — a huge issue at the time — was “not an objective of American foreign policy.”
“And if they put Jews into gas chambers in the Soviet Union,” he added, “it is not an American concern. Maybe a humanitarian concern.”
In New York, the epicenter of Jewish life in the United States, some jaws are still not back in place after dropping to the floor.Bad enough that any senior White House official would, without prodding, raise the grotesque specter of Jews once again being herded into gas chambers. But it was unbearable for some to hear that language come from Mr. Kissinger, a Jew who as a teenager fled Nazi Germany with his family, in 1938. Had he not found refuge in this country and in this city — the Kissingers settled in Washington Heights — he might have ended up in a gas chamber himself.

Oscar Peterson - Stephane Grappelli - Joe Pass - NUAGES
[Video]Giants.
the tune was of course written by grapelli's old partner, django rheinhart, who died in the early 50s. both django and bix biederbecke were giants of the jazz solo who wrote only a very few tunes themselves. but the few they did write were amazing compositions
the amazing thing to me is to listen to grapelli here - his performances on the hot club recordings are practically etched on my cortex. but here, decades later - what a tone!!! it reminds me of what wynton marsalis said about louis armstrong's tone in the 1950s - the notes themselves are not that difficult, but, "i can tell you that the solos are practically impossible to play"

In addition:
Muslim leaders in Sweden condemned the attack during Friday prayers.
"We are true Muslims and a true Muslim has nothing to do with a terror act," Imam Ben Mahmoud Rahmeh told hundreds of worshippers at the Stockholm Mosque.
"Sweden is our country and its people are our people. What pleases the country pleases us. What hurts the nation hurts us," Rahmeh said.

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. A couple of NY-centric items to pass along:
1) Sen. Gillibrand says that the votes are there to pass the Zadroga 9/11 responders bill after adjustments were made to reduce the cost of the bill (but not a reduction to the services being provided to the responders). Better late than never, but this is something that should have been resolved years ago (such as during the Bush Administration when the issues of 9/11 responders began to be identified as a serious condition/concern).
2) Reports that Saudi King Abdullah was looking to buy St. Vincent's Hospital in the West Village and move the Cordoba House/Park51 project from near Ground Zero is news to the Park51 developers. They don't know anything about the proposal. I think it's something that the sellers were trying to float to get another developer to increase their bid on the properties.

1. Good show on the first point. that bill is needed and I'm glad its been fixed enough to get the support it needs.
2. Glad that this didn't occur. An overt Saudi connection would compromise Park 51 quite badly.

British officials announced the arrest of 12 in a purported terror plot.
Police confirmed that the men were detained by unarmed officers — indicating that any attack was unlikely to have been imminent. The arrests follow several weeks of surveillance and are not believed to be linked to the suicide bombing in Sweden on Dec. 11, or to recent concerns aired by European and U.S officials over purported plots to carry out Mumbai-style commando attacks on European cities.
Not linked to holiday attack
Police said 11 of the suspects were arrested at or close to their homes at around 5 a.m., while the remaining man was detained at a property in the central English city of Birmingham.Five of the arrested men are from Cardiff, four from Stoke-on-Trent and three from London, police said.
Officers said the suspects range in age from 17 to 28 and will be questioned on suspicion of commissioning, preparing or instigating acts of terrorism.
The arrests are the most high-profile antiterror raids in Britain since April 2009, when 12 men were detained in raids across northern England. All were released without charge, but authorities insisted they had thwarted a major al-Qaida bomb plot in the northern city of Manchester.

Then again, considering that most humans are still using Bronze Age fiction as a life manual it shouldn't surprise me.

Down the long lane of the history yet to be written America knows that this world of ours, ever growing smaller, must avoid becoming a community of dreadful fear and hate, and be instead, a proud confederation of mutual trust and respect.Such a confederation must be one of equals. The weakest must come to the conference table with the same confidence as do we, protected as we are by our moral, economic, and military strength. That table, though scarred by many past frustrations, cannot be abandoned for the certain agony of the battlefield.
Disarmament, with mutual honor and confidence, is a continuing imperative. Together we must learn how to compose differences, not with arms, but with intellect and decent purpose. Because this need is so sharp and apparent I confess that I lay down my official responsibilities in this field with a definite sense of disappointment. As one who has witnessed the horror and the lingering sadness of war -- as one who knows that another war could utterly destroy this civilization which has been so slowly and painfully built over thousands of years -- I wish I could say tonight that a lasting peace is in sight.
Happily, I can say that war has been avoided. Steady progress toward our ultimate goal has been made. But, so much remains to be done. As a private citizen, I shall never cease to do what little I can to help the world advance along that road.

Of course we could, but my point is in support of missile defense against a rogue or limited strike and support for PGS.
Slapping down the incoming gives us the room to not respond with nukes. As does the PGS-conventional warhead. Even if a defensive system saved say three cities, is that a bad thing? Well worth doing if you can. As much as we want to ficus on test fails, every complex system has fails. If we stopped at the fail points, we'd not be flying.

Bomber gap! Missile gap!
Am I really surprised that we're getting 1950s terms thrown around? The number of warheads we're talking about (under the reduced amounts based on START) would be a roll back to the early 1950s in term of numbers on both sides (though the US had a significant edge through the 1950s).
This is where we're at now - (including tactical/strategic for all known or estimated weapons capable nations).
This shows an overlay of US/Russian weapons.

The AGM-129 is so stealthy they lost track of a few of them back in 2007.
It's not really a fully stealth cruise missile anyway. It has stealth technology and crawls at a speed of 500 mph. Range is 2000 miles. So yes, technically you could launch one from a 60 year old B-52 to vaporize Russian civilians.
For what I don't know. Last time the Russians made a move, in Georgia, the West did not respond.
700 warheads is more than sufficient. The START treaty also allows for modernization.

Missile defense program failed second test in a row, U.S. says
Thursday, December 16, 2010
A test of the U.S. missile defense program failed Wednesday, the second in a row involving the system, the Defense Department said.
The Missile Defense Agency provided no preliminary explanation of the failure, the seventh out of 15 tries for the program.
"This is a tremendous setback for the testing of this complicated system," Riki Ellison, head of the Missile Defense Advocacy Alliance, a booster group, said in a statement. He said it raised troubling questions about the reliability of the 30 or so interceptor missiles deployed in silos in Alaska and California.
A spokeswoman for Boeing, which manages the missile defense project, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The multibillion-dollar, ground-based bulwark is designed to shoot down a limited number of long-range ballistic missiles that could be tipped with chemical, biological or nuclear warheads. The system is part of a layered hedge against countries such as North Korea and Iran.
Stop thinking that these things are operational because they're not.

New START and U.S. National Security
Fourth, Moscow expressed concern about potential U.S. missile defense developments in 1991 and made a similar unilateral statement in conjunction with its signature of the START I Treaty. In fact, the Russians did not withdraw from START I, even after the United States withdrew from the ABM Treaty in 2002 and began deploying ground-based interceptors whose deployment would have been barred by the ABM Treaty. Moscow may hope to use the threat of withdrawal to persuade the United States to scale back its missile defense plans, but that tactic has not worked in the past.

Would we expect counter measures from NK?

I disagree with the effort to stop the START treaty as strongly as I can express.

Now they're complaining about tactical nukes.
Weapons most generals would never deploy on a battlefield.
He keeps complaining about the 10 to 1 advantage.

Funny how they fear our ability to stop a few missiles they can so easily overcome.
They really don't. Because they really have no desire to launch a nuclear attack on us.
Let me turn the argument around.
We must not have the ability to save even a few cities from missile attack. To do so would be wrong.
Huh?
Yeah, that is a ridiculous argument. I'm glad you're not making it.

Yes? I mean, if they went to the trouble of actually getting a ballistic missile that could strike the US, they'd also go to the trouble of getting countermeasures. Or should we just hope they don't?

I would expect that to be beyond their means, and with time our system will upgrade as well.

Two Dreams, One Dead

The Senate today passed the repeal of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell," which is a good thing. It did not pass the "Dream Act," which is a cold, cold abomination. There is a relationship between the two. Repealing "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" will allow homosexuals--who have fought honorably in every one of America's wars--to serve openly. Blocking the "Dream Act" means that young immigrants, who were brought here illegally by their parents, will not be able to gain citizenship by completing college or by serving in the military.

...He's a bitter man now, who can barely tolerate the fact that he lost to Barack Obama. But he lost for an obvious reason: his campaign proved him to be puerile and feckless, a politician who panicked when the heat was on during the financial collapse, a trigger-happy gambler who chose an incompetent for his vice president. He has made quite a show ever since of demonstrating his petulance and lack of grace.

Hey Lizardnauts! I've inundated myself with literature this past year and am ready to join the living again. Is this still, basically, the LGF I remember?

Thanks. Lots of Science Fiction and really good literature has given me a new perspective. The world is changing so fast. I'm not sure I want to change at the same pace.
This Wikileaks thing has me really thinking.

I would expect that to be beyond their means, and with time our system will upgrade as well.
So the purpose of this system is to protect against those who can afford to build ballistic missiles, but not countermeasures?
That's what we'd spend trillions for?
