Gaddafi Says Al Qaeda is Giving Young People Pills to Make Them Violent

Today whacked-out Libyan strongman Muammar Gaddafi blamed the violence in his country on Al Qaeda; he says Osama bin Laden is giving young people some sort of pills.

Benghazi, Libya (CNN) — Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi on Thursday blamed the violence in his country on young people, who he said are taking some sort of pills and being exploited by Osama bin Laden.

Speaking by phone on state TV as reports came in of pro-Gadhafi forces killing unarmed civilians in the town of Zawiya, Gadhafi said, “Our children have been manipulated by al Qaeda.”

“Those exploiting the youth have to be arrested,” he added.

I’m wondering if food pricing shocks helped start these rebellions in the ME. I haven’t found any data to confirm or refute this as of yet.

Yeah, food prices have been an issue and will continue to be for at least another year.

The fact that he’s either loony enough to think this will somehow help/work or that he’s loony enough to actually think it’s true does not bode well for the situation. Granted, he’s been saying this same sort of thing the whole time. The link to Osama seems new, though.

The butcher’s bill keeps rising and Khadafi’s plum out of excuses and people/groups to blame for the predicament of his own creation.

He’s ruled the country for more than 40 years with an eye to maintaining power and preventing coups (he came to power in one - so knows what happens next). He’ll do pretty much anything to hold on to power, and bringing in mercenaries is a logical extension since he can’t rely on his army and his security forces aren’t going to have much luck holding on to power outside of Tripoli at this point.

He’s putting himself on a career trajectory that puts him in line for a Ceauşescu-like ending.

There’s no logic to this of course. But if there was they wouldn’t be doing hallucinogenics but amphetamines instead. You don’t want Wyatt or Billy from “Easy Rider” you want Tony Montana from “Scarface”. /

Al Jaz is reporting that pretty much all of the police and much of the military leadership have defected.

Which, unfortunately, doesn’t mean nearly as much as it would in most countries. It’s looking more and more like this may come down to the free Libyan forces having to launch an assault against the remaining areas he and his loyalists hold. If such a thing were to happen, I can see hundreds, if not thousands, of additional deaths. I truly, truly hope I’m totally off on this.

Some good news out of Libya (for once):

#
1813: Jon Leyne is the first BBC reporter to reach Benghazi, which has seen some of the worst violence in the country and is now under opposition control. He says the city is largely calm and being run by a committee of lawyers, judges and respected local people, operating from the court house and urging people to begin restoring the city to normal.

Seems like Benghazi is relatively calm now and the citizens there are trying to help each other.

He might have a hard time getting out at this point. Most of the airforce has defected so he might have a hard time finding safe airspace to escape.

At this point, I think the only people surrounding Gaddafi at this point are the most loyal or diehard of his inner circle, what with damn near everyone in the military against him now. This only military assets that he can use are mercenaries to try to put down the protesters.

His reign is coming to an end. I would be surprised if he’s still in power by this time next week. The Libyan Air Force and Navy won’t follow his orders, the military joining the protesters, and damn near 3/4 of the country is under opposition control. His only stronghold is Tripoli proper (as the cities surrounding it have fallen to the protesters). His only options (that I can see) are to stand and fight to the death, flee the country to a safe haven (Venezuela?), or do the Hitler route and kill himself.

Honestly, I wouldn’t mind a change of pace and see an uprising in North Korea. Unfortunately, if such a thing does happen, we would have history made as it would be the first time a country used a nuclear weapon on its own people. But I also would like to see a revolution in Iran.

Of course, why Libya is on the UN’s Human Rights Council is a mystery to damn near everyone here.

They’ll let any nation get on the UNHRC. Almost seems like it’s just a rotation of nations — China’s on it now and they’re one of the worst human rights violators. I’m guessing that some of the logic to this is that by bringing countries like Libya, China, etc., on board is that it can be used as a vehicle for internal change by providing them tools and education to facilitate that change as a member of the council. Some kind of “empowerment” thing or another. Sort of like taking a sensitivity class or anger management class. Typically those don’t work for a lot of people.

if khadafy had nukes, i feel certain he’d use them against his own people to stay in power. does khadafy have chemical agents? because if he does, I think a repeat of halabja, iraq in 1987 is very possible.

There’s no telling where this will go next. The Middle East is where it started, but people living under dictators all over the world may very well take up the fight for freedom before this year is out. We’ve seen it time and time again in history, you can stomp down so hard before it becomes counterproductive. In Libya right now, even after days of being shot, bombed, bombarded, and executed, the people are still fighting for their freedom. What will come out of this, no one can say, but the face of the world is in the process of changing. The best we can do is support where support is asked, speak out against those who would use force of arms to silence the cries, and hope that our own struggles might serve as the template upon which new governments arise.

Gaddafi’s crazy. The Libyan people know this and they know what they need to do. And good on them for having the courage & resolve to see this through, regardless of the personal cost to them.

I don’t see the mercenaries sticking around to become “martyrs” along with him—when they see the writing on the wall, they’re gonna hightail out of there while they still have a chance to escape with their hides intact.

He may have some core loyalists who stick around to the bitter end, but if I was them I sure as hell wouldn’t want to be captured alive by the opposition.
