Happy May 14...
On May 14, 1948, on the day in which the British Mandate over a Palestine expired, the Jewish People's Council gathered at the Tel Aviv Museum, and approved the following proclamation, declaring the establishment of the State of Israel. The new state was recognized that night by the United States and three days later by the USSR.

Remember the Iowa theocratic group now called the Family Leader, formerly The Iowa Family Policy Center? They were behind the move to replace those Iowa SC justices who happened to agree that the Iowa Constitution allowed for gay marriage. They're also one of the groups that have been hosting GOP hopefuls this year.
Anyway, over the past 5 years, guess from where they've been getting a large chunk of money?
From you and me:
Iowa conservatives took $3 million in tax funds
A conservative group that has brought a string of potential presidential candidates to Iowa to lecture about the need to reduce government spending owes some of its past success to generous federal grants, which it has since rejected amid charges of hypocrisy.
[...] Each has called for reining in federal spending and talked about family values. The same group received more than half of its funding from federal grants over a five-year period when it operated under a different structure as The Iowa Family Policy Center. The group was among those that benefited from former President George Bush's faith-based initiative, which made it easier for social and religious organizations involved in community work to win federal funding.
The organization defends taking the grants, the bulk of which helped provide marriage mentoring for couples, but decided last year to turn down the final $550,000 in grant money and operate free of government involvement. In all, the group had accepted more than $3 million in federal grants since 2004.
[...]
Yes, due to GWB, this group which has such hatred for gay marriage received tax funds for "marriage mentoring."
Your tax money at work.

Secularist means anti-Christian. Anti-Christian means receptive to Islamists because they are also anti-Christian. Secularist also means unaware of the threat of creeping Sharian and easy pickings for Islamists when they finally take over.

Really? Those are the only two options? Jesus or Sharia law? Gimme a break. Secularism is more akin to agnosticism. The Western World is clearly on a trend away from a medieval God... pockets of America, such as the bible belt, will resist. However, I fail to see how this trend aids Islam. I genuinely believe medieval religions such as Christianity and Islam will be extinct within a few hundred years. Just like the Greek and Roman gods (and all the other religions) fell out of favor.

re: #35 dirtyharry71
I think the "medieval God" is still in style. That would be a rather fanciful God that is very iconographic as is also very mystical. Americans on the whole are still into that.
However, for historical purposes it should be noted that neither Christianity or Islam are medieval religions. Both are modern descendants of early Iron Age Canaanite religion that went from polytheism to monotheism, then went through Hellenic (for all three so called "Abrahamic" religions) and Roman influences (in the case of Christianity).
For the US in particular this blended Roman/Greek/Caananite religion underwent significant updating in the 16th century, and the variant (that's still with us) that was so fervently believed in the US in the 18th century was a more emotionalism driven variant still.
Our society carries with it at least 3 millennia of heritage (or baggage if you prefer.)

Secularist does not mean anti Christian, it means having a belief structure that does not have religion as a basis. No true secularist would stand for Sharia. I think you need to educate yourself in this topic a bit more.

PermalinkPhilippine tourism officials are turning an unused nuclear power plant into a tourist attraction, the Philippine Star reports.
The $2.3 billion Bataan Nuclear Power plant was completed in 1984 but was never put into use.
The plant was built during the presidency of Ferdinand Marcos, but when Corazon Aquino became president in 1986, she refused to open it, saying its location near earthquake faults and an active volcano made it unsafe, according to an Agence-France Presse report.
Why build a reactor near a volcano???

Radioactive cesium detected in tea leaves
Radioactive material above designated safety limits has been detected in tea leaves harvested in 5 municipalities in Kanagawa Prefecture, neighboring Tokyo. The prefectural government checked samples of leaves harvested in 15 municipalities in the region.
Officials say that samples from 5 of those were found to contain unsafe levels of radioactive cesium.
They say 780 becquerels of cesium were detected in tea leaves in Odawara City, 740 becquerels in Kiyokawa Village, 680 becquerels in Yugawara Town, 670 becquerels in Aikawa Town and 530 becquerels in Manazuru Town.
The Kanagawa prefectural government has asked the affected municipalities and the local farmers' cooperative to voluntarily halt shipments for the time being.
It says it will repeat the tests in these towns and villages when tea leaves are harvested next month.
The survey comes after 570 becquerels of radioactive cesium per kilogram -- exceeding the provisional state limit of 500 -- were detected in products from Minami Ashigara City on May 9th.

re: #72 Varek Raith
Just to clarify: The reactor is not currently melting down. It has melted down (i.e. some of the nuclear fuel melted and collected at the bottom of the containment vessel), the only surprise is how much of it melted down. Once they started pumping water inot the reactor the water level was consistently a meter a half below where the tops of the rods should have been. From the temperature readings taken while pumping water we knew that the rods were not actually above the water level.
The surprise was that the entirety of the rods melted, rather than the top third as had been assumed.

I don't think there is anything malicious here. It took several years before we got a look inside of three mile Island's reactor 2 in order to assess how damaged things are. My guess is that they're still in the process of restoring instrumentation in the reactors. It took almost a month for them to be able to turn the lights back on in the control room. It's not surprising that it took longer for them to get the sensors back up and running.

It's been a long week but I can't complain. My view is almost always "it could be worse!".
Yesterday was fun though, for me at least. My wife had a stereotypical Friday the 13th. She dropped her phone in a toilet and wasted it, she fell at work and bruised her ass pretty good, and then she ran into my elbow and blacked her eye. (She bruises easily.) She finally got pissed at the day and went to bed last night at 8. On the positive side her sis flew to her folks for a long weekend so we have the house to ourselves!

Republicans Kill Amendment That Would Have Prevented Suspected Terrorists From Buying Firearms
Facepalm.

Pakistan's parliament condemns U.S. raid, threatens sanctions
Pakistan's parliament threatened Saturday to cut off access to a facility used by NATO forces to ferry troops into Afghanistan, signaling a growing rift that began when U.S. commandos killed Osama bin Laden during a raid on a Pakistani compound.
A resolution adopted during a joint session of parliament condemned the U.S. action. It also called for a review of its working agreement with the U.S., demanded an independent investigation and ordered the immediate end of drone attacks along its border region.
Failure to end unilateral U.S. raids and drone attacks will force Pakistan to "to consider taking necessary steps, including withdrawal of (the) transit facility" used by the NATO's International Security Assistance Force, according to the resolution.

I'm sorry, but the terrorist watch lists specifically infringes on peoples 1st (assembly) and 4th amendment (search) rights and may very well infringe on peoples 6th amendment rights (the ability to confront an accuser). All without due process. So it's okay to infringe on people's rights as long as it's not their second amendment rights? If the watch lists lack due process, then fix the watch list.
If you get arrested on domestic violence charges your right to buy guns is restricted. You have about as much due process there as you do with your name showing up on a terror watch list. Why is one constitutional and the other not?

Because in order to keep your gun rights restricted, the legal system must convict you of actually have done what you were arrested for. So the case must go through due process, whereas no such facts apply with the watch list. I'm not a big fan of the domestic violence provisions myself, though there is a decent argument for them.

Speaking of the last thread:
SWAT team raids house to enforce search warrent, shoot suspect 71 times.
[Link: azstarnet.com...]
Deputies serving a search warrant on Tucson’s south side shot and killed a 26-year-old man Tuesday morning after he fired a rifle at them, officials said.
...
Guerena fired his AR-15 rifle at the deputies who were holding up shields, Ogan said.Deputies fired back, killing Guerena, Ogan said.
Then they change their minds, Guerena hadn't fired a weapon:
[Link: www.kold.com...]
But nobody answered the front door, even after SWAT members identified themselves as law enforcement.
"That's standard protocol. They do it in both English and Spanish," Lt. O'Connor said. "They scream it out. They yell it out."
By this time, Guerena's wife and 4-year-old son were hiding in a bedroom closet.
Moments earlier, Vanessa Guerena saw a man outside her window carrying a gun. When she woke up her husband to tell him - that would be the last time she'd ever speak to him.
"The only thing that he told me, the last thing that he told me...'Vani, go into the closet with the kid. Go.'"
That's when Jose Guerena - a former Marine who served in Iraq - grabbed his assault rifle and headed for the living room.
Within seconds, the SWAT team knocked down the front door and saw Guerena standing immediately in front of them.
Vanessa and her child held their breath in a bedroom closet, as everything in their lives was about to change in an instant.
"What they (SWAT members) did see clearly is this guy went into a crouching position, almost on his knees, brought up an AR-15 assault rifle, pointed at the officers and said, 'I've got something for you,' O'Connor said, referencing Guerena's alleged remarks to the SWAT members.
"At that point, officers immediately began firing on him."
O'Connor said 72 rounds were fired by officers in just a matter of seconds.
and to bring it completely up-to-date, the wife was on the phone with 911:
[Link: azstarnet.com...]
The wife of a Tucson man killed in a Pima County SWAT raid May 5 pleaded for five minutes with 911 dispatchers to send an ambulance for her mortally wounded husband, audio records show.Often through tears and sometimes in broken English, Vanessa Guerena, tells 911 operators that her husband had been shot by a "bunch of people" who opened the door of their southwest-side home and "just shoot him." Meanwhile, dispatchers worked to determine if she was calling from a house where the SWAT team was serving a search warrant, audio released Friday by Drexel Heights Fire Department reveals
As of this point the police haven't released any info on the warrant or what, if anything, they found.

point is that their aversion to waterning down the 2nd amendment trumps their aversion to terrorists. say a lot about their mentality.
And if a terrorist who is a naturalized immigrant tries to buy a gun and can't, he'll know he's being watched. Think wire taps.

Then they should let him buy the gun, just require the gun dealer to block the barrel so it backfires in the fellow's face

I gotta admit that I don't support it either, I am just surprised that the GOP does not like it, although I think they dislike it for different reasons.

The lack of internal consistency is interesting. If the government says, 'This man is a terrorist', the appropriate response appears to be, 'don't waste time showing me evidence, shoot him in the head before he hurts a flag!'. However, if the government says 'this man may be a terrorist', the response now seems to be 'don't you dare come between a man and his gun'.

Good point. A basket is a must have. She wants a basket for her bike, but really, I'm the one who needs that. I had a cheap ($15 at good will) cruiser in college with a basket...I always had beer (that made me quite popular in college).

No, once again, if someone is being watched you cannot tip your hand if there is no reason for said person not to buy a gun legally.

I think the larger (earlier) point was the watch list for fliers was a crap shoot, at best
iirc, wasn't Senator Ted Kennedys name on it?
So making one just for gun purchases, how many mistakes will be on that list denying a legal law abiding citizen their right to buy one
I'm not advocating for or against this new list, just brigning the debate back to the genesis

That food stamp president comment isn't a racist dog whistle, it's a bullhorn. Then there's this...
Last year, he suggested U.S. Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor was a racist, said Obama is best understood by his "Kenyan, anti-colonial behavior," and argued that placing a mosque near ground zero in New York City was akin to placing a Nazi sign next to the Holocaust Museum.
What a guy.

"In a perfect example of a big media company looking to capitalize on current events, The Walt Disney Company has trademarked “Seal Team 6,” which also happens to be the name of the elite special forces team that killed Osama Bin Laden.

Of course, for all we know Disney has been working on an animated feature about a team of anthropomorphic seals in search of adventure, but given the timing of the application that seems… unlikely."

I see an opportunity to send the kid out driving without having to go yourself...just put a hat and glasses on the doll...preferably mirrored glasses and a police hat.
