Interesting anthro and genetics paper published today in PNAS:
Archaic human ancestry in East Asia
Recent studies of ancient genomes have suggested that gene flow from archaic hominin groups to the ancestors of modern humans occurred on two separate occasions during the modern human expansion out of Africa. At the same time, decreasing levels of human genetic diversity have been found at increasing distance from Africa as a consequence of human expansion out of Africa. We analyzed the signal of archaic ancestry in modern human populations, and we investigated how serial founder models of human expansion affect the signal of archaic ancestry using simulations. For descendants of an archaic admixture event, we show that genetic drift coupled with ascertainment bias for common alleles can cause artificial but largely predictable differences in similarity to archaic genomes. In genotype data from non-Africans, this effect results in a biased genetic similarity to Neandertals with increasing distance from Africa. However, in addition to the previously reported gene flow between Neandertals and non-Africans as well as gene flow between an archaic human population from Siberia (“Denisovans”) and Oceanians, we found a significant affinity between East Asians, particularly Southeast Asians, and the Denisova genome—a pattern that is not expected under a model of solely Neandertal admixture in the ancestry of East Asians. These results suggest admixture between Denisovans or a Denisova-related population and the ancestors of East Asians, and that the history of anatomically modern and archaic humans might be more complex than previously proposed.
Earlier the Denisovan genetic heritage was shown in various Oceania current populations, but if indeed there is identifiable Denisovan ancestry among other East Asian groups then this will lead to some interesting consequences wrt how we view the over all Homo sapiens population.
My particular concern is that this information will be manipulated by the genetic racists as further proof of superiority or inferiority of certain racists.
Oh, and the creationists are still in denial about the whole thing.

We have a lot of kids in the building, but few trick-or-treaters. It's an apartment building in a suburban neighborhood, the manager is cranky, and I think the parents tend to lead the kids out into the neighborhood, where the single-family houses are decorated and ready to distribute candy.

I live in a neighborhood where the parents bring their kids to t-o-t. Halloween eve on public transportation is pretty cute.
You may have heard - the city has also banned the legendary "party" in the Castro this year. I'm glad. I stopped going to that about 7-8 years ago when it seemed to me a bunch of gawkers from out of town. It was probably that long before then, but at least no one was getting hurt/killed.

It's two tiers of apartments around an open courtyard--very efficient indeed, and hopefully at least some of the kids will come around. SOme of the parents decorated their doors and windows this year, so that may indicate more interest.

I chickened out. Give me kids first, then...

my apartment literally just passed out orange signs that were like "you wnat trick-or-treaters? put this on your door!" efficiency, I guess!
In our neighborhood, if you want to play you decorate and light porch and driveway lights. Otherwise the kids just skip you.

Last Halloween, WUB made a little kid cry!
True story!
the little fucker saw what real power was, he looked into the galactic bird eyeball and found himself in a place where time has no meaning

It's two tiers of apartments around an open courtyard--very efficient indeed, and hopefully at least some of the kids will come around. SOme of the parents decorated their doors and windows this year, so that may indicate more interest.
The building is really lousy about kids, though.
Dense, relatively new, well-lit suburban neighborhood.
Going to be a busy night.

Did he run away and steal a time machine?

If I were a kid these days I'd get me and my buddies to dress up as gansta rappers..Bring a Boom box playing 50 cent 'In da House'.. I'd flash a toy gun and demand Cash, Drugs or da woman of the house..
That's how we'd roll..

Ideally, he's building a shrine to the bird god
eventually he'll build his own, after sorting out his subconscious, and fly between worlds :D

if I ever live in the suburbs, my halloween schtick is going to be aiming a combo amp out the front window and playing the really eerie slayer intro riffs as kids arrive
oh look jimmy! You're South of Heaven now!

I'm in Contra Costa now--sad about Castro Halloween. A grand old tradition.
I used to live at Fifth Avenue and Lake. I think they brought kids to trick-or-treat from all over the city. My landlady would buy barrels of candy. The good stuff too. She was awesome.

I think there's a Halloween party in one of the apartments across from me. About fifteen groups of adults holding small children and talking about candy in Spanish have drifted by in the last half hour.

cities are not for tricker treating....it's definitely a flyover/burb gig, no matter how you cut it

SE is sorta not quite either, it's like a burby little nook in outer SE Portland. it's technically inside city limits, but yet there's deer that wander through the parking lot

T or T is 'officially' over, and we didn't have to go into the emergency pretzels. There were probably 10x the number of kids we had a few years ago--the preachers are losing their grip.
Hmmm. What kind of candy goes with Yeunglings?
