Friday Morning Server Craziness - Update: Saturday Afternoon Reboot

LGF • Views: 23,162

Yep, we know there’s something weird going on with the servers and we’re working on it with our host. In the meantime, here’s a new thread to check things out with…

UPDATE at 10/12/12 10:46:05 am

It looks like we’re going to need a new database server, and that’s currently in the works. The switch-over will take place this evening, and in the meantime I’ve had to turn off commenting because it’s not working reliably and I don’t want anyone else to lose comments.

Sorry for the inconvenience! This has been the week from hell for our servers.

UPDATE at 10/13/12 11:59:36 am

The new server is set up at last, the database has been exported and imported into the new instance of MySQL, and we’re on final approach to reboot. It’s a dual quad-core box with HT (hyper-threading), 12 gigabytes of RAM, and 2 1TB hard drives. Much faster and a lot more memory and storage space than the old server, which was at least 4 years old.

Just a few loose ends left to tie up.

I wore out my F5 key.

Glad to see you're back.

When the old server was crashing we lost a few comments - not too many. They were never written to the database.

Man, Twitter's alright for Charles' updates and the smattering of comments we've posted trying to keep busy, but I've had the LGF jones real bad.

On the upside, things seem much snappier; kudos to Charles for getting it all straightened out.

Quick, someone type up another page that'll get to the front page of Reddit.

We should be much better prepared for traffic surges with the new server. I don't have any way to check for sure, but I suspect the old server was starting to get flaky right when that Reddit link hit, and it contributed to the problems we had earlier this week.

The new one is really looking good so far in the shell.

There was a pro wrestler a few years back who did a gimmick where he was basically a stereotypical white person (the wrestler was latino, which made it even more zany). One of his catchphrases was "If it ain't white, it ain't right."

That was satire. The Romney thing isn't.

This is why I migrated to Google Apps and shut down Active Directory and Exchange that I was running in a set of VMs on a white box under my TV.

But then, I wasn't really running a business on it, just my Email, file sharing and the like. For the latter, I just got a QNAP, and why should I manage my own mail server?

I think we all need to give Charles and whomever else huge props for getting this site back up and running so fast!

Much larger websites that have a lot more money and manpower than LGF don't do half as well recovering from an outage.

That also depends on how fast the browser is, and how fast your computer is - for example, Internet Explorer starts to get sluggish on long comment threads, and there's nothing the server can do to help that. It just doesn't handle large amounts of HTML code very well.

Ooh, the new dilithium crystals really make a big difference!

125 Charles Johnson  Sat, Oct 13, 2012 2:14:38pm

Keeping an eye on the new server, it's handling the DB queries an order of magnitude faster than the old one. I haven't seen a query take longer than 2 seconds yet, even the complex multi-table joins. MySQL can record "slow queries," and since it's been online there have been zero slow queries.

Yeah. This rocks.

I want to put in a special plug for Annette at Hosting Matters, who stayed up all night to get the database together.

Good to hear, no doubt you are also aware of the additional load placed by the logging.

Just a note. If you see this image around...

That's not the Sensata HQ in Illinois. It's actually the Sensata Technologies Baoying Co. Ltd. HQ in Baoying, China...

You can read about what's going on here.

re: #121 engineer cat

i knew we'd get back to The Main Topic sooner or later

today i'm feeling discouraged since it seems like one less than stellar night at the debates may result in medicare and social security running out in 20 years and american society looking more and more like a third world country with very rich people and very poor people

a cut from one inflection point leading to mortal bleeding?

Don't lose hope yet. Romney had the greatest night of his life, and its only pulled him to even, maybe barely ahead. I think we can safely assume that the President appreciates just how important the next debate is, and will be at the top of his game, if he doesn't want his legacy flushed down the toilet.

re: #121 engineer cat

It wont come to that. Look, all Obama Biden as do is win OH/WI (still up 4-5 points per reputable pollsters) and any one of IA/NV/CO. Anything else will be gravy. I am confident that the President will bring his A game to the next two debates and will win the election.

Gus,are there any pics of the Illinois building? Just a quick search and I couldn't find anything. Having the pic of the actual building in question would be nice. I heard about this story Friday afternoon on the radio and didn't have time then to research it.

Best I can find in Google maps.

Looks like an old 1-story warehouse.

Apparently it was leased from Honeywell for 3 years and now that the 3 years are up they're moving operations to China. Honeywell is closing out whatever minor operation they still had there, so it will be empty.

The one in China used to be Texas Instruments.

Mind you they have several Chinese facilities.

You'll definitely notice a big difference when moving four years ahead in server hardware. I did the same earlier this year and man o man, the new toy smokes. RAM per RAM, Core for Core, there is just no comparison.

Meanwhile, Reddit is reacting really badly to the revelation that a big part of their success is due to pandering to borderline pedophiles.
