Russian Newspaper: Snowden Reached Out to Russian Authorities While Still in Hong Kong

Imagine, if you will, my surprise
World • Views: 33,516

Russian newspaper Kommersant reports that NSA leaker Edward Snowden was reaching out to Russian authorities while he was still in Hong Kong.

The respected Russian newspaper Kommersant is reporting that NSA leaker Edward Snowden approached the Kremlin for support and spent a few days in the Russian consulate in Hong Kong before flying to Moscow in June.

Russia hoped to be rid of the whistleblower a day later until the U.S. essentially blocked him from leaving Russia by threatening Cuba and other unnamed countries with “undesirable consequences” if they allowed him to land on their territory or helped him in any other way, Kommersant writes, citing Russian and U.S. diplomatic sources.

It was not immediately possible to confirm the accuracy of the report, written by veteran diplomatic correspondents Elena Chernenko and Alexander Gabuev, as well as Kommersant’s U.S. correspondent Kirill Belyaninov. A rough equivalent of the Wall Street Journal, Kommersant has long been regarded as one of Russia’s top independent news sources. In recent months, however, talk of politically motivated meddling and censorship by owner Alisher Usmanov, a close Putin confidant and the richest man in both Russia and Britain, has sparked talk of a crisis at the publication, prompting the departure of several top editors.

The report cites a source “in Snowden’s entourage” as saying that Snowden spent several days in the Russian consulate in a rented office on the 21st floor of the Sun Hung Kai tower in Hong Kong. Snowden even celebrated his thirtieth birthday there on June 21, the unnamed source said. Snowden flew to Russia two days later.

Too much Snowden for my tired old brain.

I was hoping for less Snowden and more not-Snowden.

Something non-Snowdon:

But it wasn’t because there was a loaded gun in the house! It wasn’t because of the video game!
It was, er, all the parents’ fault!
(I mean, in some sense it was, but the gun and the violence didn’t exactly help.)

Amazing coincidence how every article praising him is great, while any article (or person) criticizing him or his methods is idiotic!

Well if it will help reduce your desire, I was stuck for nearly two hours in the middle of nowhere on a German train during a blizzard there back in March. Fortunately, I had sprung for the 2.50 Euro seat reservation. This was a fairly crowded Sunday afternoon run and more than a few people were standing or sitting on the floor in the corridors…no fun when you are moving, REALLY no fun while not getting closer to your destination!

Political Values

Radicalism 85.75
Socialism 87.5
Tenderness 53.125

These scores indicate that you are a progressive; this is the political profile one might associate with a university professor. It appears that you are skeptical towards religion, and have a pragmatic attitude towards humanity in general.

Your attitudes towards economics appear communist, and combined with your social attitudes this creates the picture of someone who would generally be described as left-wing.

To round out the picture you appear to be, political preference aside, an idealist with many strong opinions.

This concludes our analysis; we hope you found your results accurate, useful, and interesting.

Coober Pedy is a town in northern South Australia, 846 kilometres north of Adelaide on the Stuart Highway. According to the 2011 census, its population was 1,695 (953 males, 742 females, including 275 indigenous Australians).[1] The town is sometimes referred to as the “opal capital of the world” because of the quantity of precious opals that are mined there. Coober Pedy is renowned for its below-ground residences, called “dugouts”, which are built due to the scorching daytime heat. The name “Coober Pedy” comes from the local Aboriginal term kupa-piti, which means “white man’s hole”.[2]
Opal was found in Coober Pedy on 1 February 1915; since then the town has been supplying most of the world’s gem-quality opal. Coober Pedy today relies as much on tourism as the opal mining industry to provide the community with employment and sustainability. Coober Pedy has over 70 opal fields and is the largest opal mining area in the world.

Sounds like a good place to be when the world ends, or whatever. Think their might be dragons?

a) people understood the kind of humor that goes around three corners to bite you in the butt and

b) people did not go out of theri way to find things to take offense at

Especially British humo(u)r is very nuanced in that respect, when they are making fun of the Germans, they are not necessarily making fun of Germans, but about British people with a provincial, outdated attitude towards them.

But we live in an age where nuance, subtlety, irony and the ability to understand historical/cultural references are no longer part of public discourse.

Exclusive: CIA Files Prove America Helped Saddam as He Gassed Iran

The U.S. government may be considering military action in response to chemical strikes near Damascus. But a generation ago, America’s military and intelligence communities knew about and did nothing to stop a series of nerve gas attacks far more devastating than anything Syria has seen, Foreign Policy has learned.

In 1988, during the waning days of Iraq’s war with Iran, the United States learned through satellite imagery that Iran was about to gain a major strategic advantage by exploiting a hole in Iraqi defenses. U.S. intelligence officials conveyed the location of the Iranian troops to Iraq, fully aware that Hussein’s military would attack with chemical weapons, including sarin, a lethal nerve agent.

The intelligence included imagery and maps about Iranian troop movements, as well as the locations of Iranian logistics facilities and details about Iranian air defenses. The Iraqis used mustard gas and sarin prior to four major offensives in early 1988 that relied on U.S. satellite imagery, maps, and other intelligence. These attacks helped to tilt the war in Iraq’s favor and bring Iran to the negotiating table, and they ensured that the Reagan administration’s long-standing policy of securing an Iraqi victory would succeed. But they were also the last in a series of chemical strikes stretching back several years that the Reagan administration knew about and didn’t disclose.

Transport Direct gives Public Transport info (and car routes and flights, tho I would use other sites for those)
transportdirect.info

The official National Rail site has a pretty good journey planner:
nationalrail.co.uk
I think their data is also used by various other sites such as:

The site I use to buy tickets:
eastcoast.co.uk
(nice clear interface)

If you buy far enough in advance you can get cheap travel - even in 1st class, but you are tied to getting a particular train, miss it and you need to buy a whole new ticket - if you get an open single or return you can still book a reservation on a particular train but the ticket is still valid on any service in that price range (on or off-peak, usually)
(whether 1st class is worth it really varies between train companies and routes, rule of thumb - the longer intercity routes are good, the commuter routes are crap, with 1st class getting you a seat at peak times, but no frills)

The fact that a fair portion of my fellow Americans (or maybe we should call them American’ts) do not care who suffers as a result of their revenge fantasies against that black guy and the government in general kind of pisses me off. What the fuck is wrong with people?

A very prime example of this was excluding air traffic controllers from the sequester the second it was going to inconvenience Congrescritters that had to fly home in the next day or two. Assholes. Never mind anyone else, like, oh, people who can’t afford to get to work sometimes because their jobs don’t pay enough to fill the gas tank or even buy a bus pass.

I’m so sick of these freaks. If they hate everyone else so much why don’t they move to a mountain top and leave the rest of us alone?

This one drives me nuts. The reason gas got that low was because of unregulated speculation by investors in the oil market. That was the cause of low gas prices, not any sort sane energy policy that Bush put in place.

Always funny how the RWNJs fail to mention that, or the fact that in the summer of ‘08, gas was above $4 a gallon (at least in NJ).

Sadly, very true. A certain amount of shock value has always been around - Alice Cooper springs to mind - but now it seems shock value is taking a more dominant role as opposed to talent.

The price of gas dipped for a very short time when the housing bubble popped and everything went to hell.

RWNJs think everybody has short term memory failure and nobody remembers that gas prices were hovering around $4 during the rest of GWB’s tenure.

That’s despite having to dodge sniper fire and the Syrian army dropping artillery on the site for a few days before the UN could make the short trip between where they were holed up in Damascus and the site in the Damascus suburbs.

What will they find? Not sure.

Maybe they find traces of actual chemical weapons. (mustard, sarin, tabun, VX, GB, etc.)

Maybe they find pesticides and not actual chemical weapons (mustard, sarin, tabun, VX, GB, etc.) - because pesticides can have the same deadly effects on people as they do pests and chemical weapons development was an offshoot of pesticides research.

Or, they find that the number of victims isn’t what the opposition claimed (whether you’re talking 130 or 1,300).

Either way, don’t expect the US to get into this, especially with no UN agreement on what to do.

137 Feline Fearless Leader  Mon, Aug 26, 2013 7:03:11am

In the last 5-6 years when hasn’t an awards show started playing “edgy”?

And in the case of MTV doing so, big surprise since they essentially have to top the previous year’s “edginess”. Falls into place with their ongoing drive to be pop culture-y at the expense of the music. It sells apparently, so expect to see it continue.

More details on the Rim Fire - the portion affected in Yosemite so far is contained to the north west side of the park (see this map for landmarks).

The area around Lake Eleanor is full involved, and officials are concerned about both the Merced and Tuolumne Groves of sequoias. Those are on the Route 120 entrance route into the park.

The biggest concern though is that water and power to San Francisco comes from the Hetch Hetchy reservoir. Power has already been affected, and water quality is so far okay - but that may change if runoff in coming months begins to show the effects of erosion and requires further treatment.

Yosemite Valley is protected so far - firefighters should be able to contain the fire before it gets that far - assuming the weather begins to turn in their favor, but because this fire is so hot and in the forest crown, it’s possible for the winds to simply pick embers and carry them past the fire lines established by firefighters. It’s how the fire can grow so fast and move so far in so short a time.

But for now, the firefighters have made progress on the western side of the fire -

Fire crews reported making significant progress along the western edge of the fire Sunday, and evacuation advisories had been lifted for the communities of Pine Mountain Lake and Buck Meadows.

More photos.

I just saw the replay. Cyrus been hanging out with Paris Hilton or something? I mean, she’s been performing for enough years that I’m guessing she had to be really rolling or coked up or something to come out looking that uncoordinated. I mean, she’s flailing and lolling her tongue like a novice go-go dancer on her first night… If it’s an act, I cringe to think that we’ve gotten to the point where “blackout-stoned blonde making a stumbling fool of herself” could have mass sex appeal.

The other “shock value” stuff don’t do much for me. Yer basic candy raver nostalgia (yahaha, “molly” is just good ol’ Ecstasy) with some nods to J-Pop lolicon creepiness and a heavy helping of the madonna-whore white-girl strip-hop garbage that the labels have been pushing since, hell, since before Ronnie was Spector.

(although the idea of “candy raver nostalgia” gives me a chilly feeling in my mitochondria)

But here’s what I really hate about that kind of spectacle… The whole pimp-chic esthetic of it. We get men with microphones in designer suits and designer street garb, surrounded by half-naked female bearers weighed down with giant symbols of infantility or gaudy symbols of wealth, and the only woman with a microphone basically spends the whole time clumsily begging to be possessed.

Man Allowed To Take License Photo With Pasta Strainer On Head

“Once she allowed me to I put the pasta strainer on my head, I took the biggest, cheesiest smile I probably ever took,” said Texas Tech Student Eddie Castillo.

What was once used as a tool to drain pasta is now a religious symbol. After a month long battle with DPS, Castillo was allowed to take his official government ID photo while wearing a pasta strainer, which he says is a symbol of his religion “Pastafarianism.”

“It was created as a form of satire, but it shouldn’t be taken in a sense that discriminates or disassociates other religions and it should be looked at as a political symbol for the separation of church and state,” said Castillo.

Castillo says “Pastafarians” worship the Flying Spaghetti Monster, a made-up god that was invented as an argument against teaching intelligent design in schools.

I understand that the transition from child star to simply being a star isn’t always easy or successful but it would seem to be apparent that the same path trail-blazed by Ms. Spears, Lohan, and Byrnes isn’t always an automatic game plan for success.

re: #167 piratedan

Transition from teen star to adult star has been a problem for people in Hollywood for decades. Some manage to overcome it and remain in the business successfully- Janet Jackson. Christina Aguelera and Justin Timberlake come to mind.

Some flame out spectacularly - Lohan had everything going for her, except a stable family situation and no one to guide her past all the crap her parents threw her way. If she gets a stable situation around her, she might end up okay for herself.

Drugs overtake more than a few.

Some never make it to adulthood - River Phoenix comes to mind.

The temptations are omnipresent and all that money thrown around makes people willing to try/do pretty much anything.

A few have managed to overcome their demons (so far). See Spears, Britney and are doing okay for themselves.

Miley Cirus is in the midst of her own agenda (or those cooked up by her publicists). After playing the good girl on Disney, she thinks the way to get past that is to rebel in the most vulgar way possible. It wasn’t particularly shocking actually.

I’m not even getting into those who have serious mental issues, like Bynes, whose weird behavior was apparently the result of serious psychiatric illness and which now appears to be getting treatment (for how long, who knows).

Hard to tell. It can be viewed that way, but that does not guarantee that it was the main motivation for his action. I have just seen too many actions by young males where they are oblivious to the consequences or implications of actions.

174 lawhawk  Mon, Aug 26, 2013 8:23:59am

In a spot of good news, the girl who got national attention for needing a lung transplant but the OPTN procedures didn’t put her in priority due to her age, is now leaving the hospital.

She ended up requiring two lung transplants after the first didn’t take, and she still faces challenges since she suffers from CF, but going home is a big deal for her and her family.

That her story made national headlines - used by the right wing to attack the Obama Administration for death panels or other such nonsense ignores that there’s a chronic shortage of organs because there simply aren’t enough donors and the transplant waiting lists are necessary to fairly distribute the limited resources to those who are in need.

Sadly, all too many die while waiting on the list - and it’s because there aren’t enough donors to go around.

And that’s got nothing to do with Obama, the HHS, or OPTN. We, as a society, have not decided to make organ transplants a more common procedure by requiring opt-in for donations, instead of opt-outs.

Until we get to a point with technology that we don’t need transplants, people will continue dying while waiting on the lists. This particular story has a happy ending for the girl and her family, but at least two other people had to die for her to get this chance at living.

Surprisingly, Miley’s ‘performance’ didn’t offend me on moralistic grounds - which I was half-expecting because I saw all the moralizing on Facebook before seeing the video - tons of ‘This is what’s wrong with our culture,’ etc.

The clip did offend me on artistic grounds, though. The song is just bad. Lryically, it reads like it was written by the guy who wrote ‘Friday’ for Rebecca Black - c-grade material at best.

Thicke was consistently out of pitch, making his crooning even more embarrassing. The pimp suit didn’t help.

I really did like that huge stuffed bear with the blinky visor thing, though. Unfortunately, it was straight downhill from there.

Also, tongue. Just plain difficult to watch.

So at the end of July/beginning of August I finished a massive RFP for a pretty huge company. Won’t say who. If hell freezes and I somehow manage to land it, even partially, it would be huge for me.

The original schedule called for a deadline of August 1st to turn in the proposals. The proposals would be under review from August 2nd - 9th, when they’d choose who was moving forward. Supplier presentations would be the week of August 12th with a final decision on August 30th.

Sure enough, August 12th comes and they say “Oops, sorry. Still going through the proposals. We’ll have presentations on the 29th.” Since then, silence. Today I get a second email saying they’re still evaluating the proposals and should tell us by the end of the week who’s going further, but because of Labor Day, now the presentations are delayed until the week of September 9th.

ARGH. I hate waiting. Just tell me already.

re: #249 Vicious Babushka

So Journalism has to be redefined to whatever it is that Glenn Greenwald does.

I don’t think GG understands that the Establishment would actually *love* that. If journalism redefines itself as activist and by default partial to certain viewpoints then it destroys independent journalism as a check upon the Establishment itself. All news is then FOXNews and simply flogging an agenda.

Sycophants are bad unless they’re Glenn’s sycophants.

That’s an awfully long way of saying, “I read it on the Internet.”

Journalism!

Paid by the word.

re: #258 NJDhockeyfan

I wonder when people will catch on that “drone” means pilotless vehicle (usually an aircraft) and that all drones are not created equal.

Encryption is only a function of time and computing power. Time was that 64 bit encryption was safe. Then 128. then 256. Now? Not as safe as you’d think.

Same thing with passwords.

Hacking programs give even novices the ability to do all kinds of stuff - including password breaking. It’s all a matter of time.

But knowing Greenwald and Miranda, would I be surprised if their password was 1 - 2 - 3 - 4 - 5 - 6? /

Glenn Greenwald’s password is GLeNNGreenWald

When I saw “Virginia bull run” I momentarily thought they droned a bunch of Civil War re-enactors. I guess standing too close to the Confed battle flag can be dangerous…

Or is the current (unspoken) thinking that holding the MLK holiday in dead cold winter keeps blacks from making trouble? Maybe. But my vague impression is that late spring or early summer is the rowdiest time of the year, while late summer is mellower, more lazy and hazy than crazy. Somebody should study the subject using data.

Just one more conservative race realist who’s just asking questions. //

Oh Please. He left the country on his own accord, no one’s keeping him from coming back. Unless of course he’s done something to be arrested for and he doesn’t want to deal with that. Like maybe tax evasion or possessing stolen documents.

As long as we’re talking about these self serving twits, we’re not talking about scrutinizing the whole contracting system that allowed Snowden to get his hands on info he never should have had access to. THAT, IMHO is the real story here. Not sniveling little cowards who can’t take the slightest criticism.

Possible consolation: the eco-system needs the fire. Maybe not in such big doses, but that happens because fires were suppressed for too long.

True. Many were stunned at the size of the Yosemite fire in 1990.
