A new viral time-lapse video depicts the Milky Way over Mauna Kea, Hawaii, in amazing detail, complete with telescopes and dancing laser beams.

Sean Goebel, a graduate student in astronomy at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, created the new Hawaii night sky video from photographs shot on three consecutive nights in April and four nights in the summer of 2013.

The film features the night sky progression over Mauna Kea, a 13,803-foot (4,207 meters) mountain on Hawaii’s Big Island, and its many telescopes. The Keck, Gemini and Subaru telescopes each have lasers, which are used to remove the blurring effects of Earth’s atmosphere using adaptive optics.

Christmas is coming to the Jockey home, after all. It was a near thing. Nobody seemed to want to actually DO anything about it. The younger boy insisted that we MUST get a tree, it MUST be real, and it MUST NOT be a dinky little thing. Mind you, it’s not like he was going to take any action on his own about it!

So, we were stuck in a stalemate. Mrs. Jockey ambivalent about Christmas AT BEST; me wanting a tree, but not wanting to have to do the whole damned thing myself; the younger boy wanting a tree but not wanting to take any action; the older boy wanting … well, he’s hard to figure out.

Finally, Friday morning I took action. The older boy and I went out in search of tree. Found a lot still open, with a small but very nice selection of good sized trees, all marked down. They were in the process of disassembling things, as this was their last day.

Once the older boy and I went and got a tree, and we figured out where to put it, the floodgates opened, and now we have a beautifully lit tree with nary an ornament (Mrs. Jockey seems to prefer it that way), lights on the house, lights on the mantle, and around the foyer arch.

And Mrs. Jockey is feeling much more Christmassy. It may have helped that the older boy and I made an apple pie.

I don’t care about Justine either. But, there is a decent point to be made with one aspect of that article on her apology. The time she was in the air after her tweet until she landed is unique to the ‘net social world. As the article is basically saying, she was judged and jury-ed in record time by the social media.

The could be some good in that. There just might be a whole lotta bad in it too.

It’s like the world is one giant Roman Colosseum and the audience gets to view the victim from all over and render a thumbs-up or thumbs-down on that victim without ever being seen, without a fight. And in hours. Unprecedented.

Next step is for people to start to set enemies/adversaries/competition up, get the new ‘net Colosseum to thumbs-down and the results may never get to be changed even if the person never triggered anything to cause it all. Even if the person has absolutely no idea it is going on.

It just feels weird to me. Others?

Best homemade crust I’ve managed, too. I cut the fat in by hand with a 5-wire pastry blender, instead of using a food processor. There were still visible pockets of butter and Crisco when it was rolled out.

The boy and I made whipped cream to go with it, too, and that was after he made Spaghetti and Meatballs for dinner, with a nice big salad. I may get some use out of him after all.

Yes, it had a distinctly odd feeling.

If the facts had been different - say if she’d tweeted and then NOT gone on inter-hemisphere flight - one of her friends would likely have tweeted her “WTF, Justine?” and she might have taken it down.

IMO, the tweet itself was grounds for dismissal from a position of such prominence in a big company, ESPECIALLY a position in Corporate Communications! But she would not have been a public spectacle.

I’m not comfortable with it either. There’s a lot of room for reasonable debate but this stuff usually ends up getting split down partisan lines and the quality of debate declines rapidly. For better or worse this flash mob/viral social media tactic works because companies are risk adverse. If it hurts sales then the problem needs to go away. I guess my main concern is I’m not comfortable with PR agencies, car maunfacturers and mattress companies deciding what their employees can say when off work or which radio shows can be heard on the radio. I don’t like them having that power.

Social media allows for a small mis-step to go a very long way very quickly. And with it comes taking responsibility for what you say. Don’t want your opinions possibly publicized and generating effects? Don’t tweet them!

Per the effect on her employment that’s also part of the risk. You, as an employee or member of some group or organization are a de facto representative of that group. What you do or say reflects upon them, and thus they are often quite defensive about getting their reputation or business damaged by an unapproved comment or communication. It’s a part of employment or membership that a lot of people seem to not understand or take into account.

Good news: They can’t. They can decide whether or not to continue to employ the person who said the thing.

This is really obvious if you think about it for five seconds.

I am interested that you don’t think that companies should be able to terminate employees for that reason, though. Given that you’re a self-declared ‘classical liberal’, this pro-workers’ rights stance is at odds with that libertarian philosophy in general. I’m personally against companies being able to fire employees ‘at-will’, instead preferring they have to show some form of cause. In this case, the ‘cause’ would be “This woman is no longer credible as a communications director”, which would strike me as eminently reasonable.

You have some sort of constant, bizarre problem in your head with not being able to distinguish between R. Murph Gimrack, Jr, the lathe operator saying dumb shit about black people, and the head of communications saying something this dumb, or Rush Limbaugh saying stuff. Dude they already have that power. With their advertising dollars. Why the hell do I see Boeing and Lockheed commercials on TV news? Am I going to be buying anything from them, like, ever? No one is, except airline companies and the Pentagon. But what they can do is tell those news channels that if they run any story detrimental to their bottom line or exposing corruption, then poof! go the ad dollars.

As for that partisan line BS, is it REALLY partisan to be anti fucking racist? Well, never mind, in this day and age one party seems to embrace it WAY too often for it to be a coincidence. Ahem.

She was, quite literally, the face and voice of the company, the person reporters and such were to contact first to get information about the company.

We’re not talking about Joe Schmo on the production line spending his weekends anonymously protesting in favor of something the company doesn’t support - though if Joe Schmo is wearing his company logo T-shirt while protesting, and gets his picture in the paper with their logo prominently displayed, it also reflects on the company.

My final take on the Cracker Barrel walkback on pulling the Phil DD merchandise; as the Nashville area is CB’s home base, I looked at the Tennessean for their take:

Cracker Barrel to put ‘Duck Dynasty’ items back on shelves

Unsurprisingly, the commenters were fully in support of CB’s change-of-heart, so this is what I had to say:

As a Nashvillian who has frequented CB a lot over the years, this walkback on DD is disappointing, but not unexpected given CB’s core constituency and anyone aware of the company’s history towards gay and black employees and customers ( en.wikipedia.org ); it seems that old habits die hard, even for corporations. This episode just shows that all of the talk from CB about “diversity” (that they were dragged into kicking and screaming after all of the lawsuits and governmental actions that they were a party to) was nothing more than a front, lip service when the rubber met the road.

Cracker Barrel, you had a chance to stand up for all of your customers and employees when you decided to pull the Phil merchandise in response to the bigoted, ignorant things that he’s said, even those made outside of the GQ interview, but in your walkback and subsequent pledge of fealty to your core constituency, you failed and decided to cast your lot with those who are as bigoted and ignorant as he is.

Good luck with that…

Just want to clarify for discussion sake. In my #17 I was not meaning to excuse or justify anything that happened to Justine. I wanted to discuss the phenomena of the mechanics and that It all went down so fast, digitally on the ‘net. Can this now be manipulated and become a new tactic to destroy someone?

The fact this blew up so fast due to all the linking that must be wide spread enough to take a message and get it around fast and more thorough than ever. Tweets have powers that other digital outlets haven’t had. It’s almost as if the entire ‘net gets the tweet in very little time due to everyone sharing and linking and following. I don’t use the medium, but by its nature I saw it posted here a bunch of times on Friday

Talk about viral. Damn outbreak and it can’t be quarantined in time before you’re dead and news around the world. How many millions now knowing about Justine and her mistake?

All I can do is shake my head when thinking how all this could be used and all the ramifications.

Others?

I hear you but I’d make two points:

1. Given her other Tweets, it was pretty clear she thought posting what she posted wasn’t a big deal. For a PR director, that level of cluelessness isn’t really tolerable.

2. If you hold a public-facing position within a company and then say or do something that offends the public, you can expect to lose your job. It wouldn’t be about fairness, it would be about your having ceased to be an asset to the company and instead having become a liability. If that happens, the company is going to protect their bottom line and get rid of you unless your likely future contribution to said bottom line is going to be great enough for them to endure the losses caused by your PR dustup.

I’m rather glad that there are media for the privileged, the racist, the misogynistic, the homophobic, for any type of bigotry, to be immediately exposed when those people are just too fucking stupid to realize that they are a public media, after all. and you can’t take it back.

This is much better than when people could actually lie to your face and be secretive and dishonest about those attitudes, hiding them, holding them close and never be called on it.

No apology will ever be enough for either Robertson or Sacco—what they said goes to their core beliefs and it was no accident in either case.

Either we fight those attitudes, or it’s “business as usual”. Social media: think about what that means.

No, no one is perfect, but if we’re not here to learn from one another, if we’re here to simply spout off in what we think is just an echo chamber, what is the point in being here at all?

There is a legal term: res ipsa loquitur - it means :the thing speaks for itself.” I.e. some things are just so self-evident that there is really no arguing about them. The classic example is finding a surgeon’s tool sewn up in a patient - we all know what happened, and absent a really good explanation, there isn’t any reasonable argument that negligence didn’t occur.

The same is the case here, IMO. The only reasonable explanation for that horribly racist tweet was that her account was hacked. That is why her employer waited until she got off the plane to fire here. There is no reasonable argument that flagrant racism has occurred.

Wisconsin’s Incarceration Problem

Wisconsin is no exception. Wisconsin ranks #1 in the country for our rate of incarcerating African Americans. The state’s incarceration rate is 12.8%, meaning that one in eight black men are currently in state prison. In Milwaukee, the numbers are even more stark. More than half of the black men in Milwaukee have been incarcerated at one point or another, leaving them virtually unemployable as more and more employers run routine background checks. 2/3s of them are in the cities 6 poorest zip codes.

Blogging Blue is a little dudebro-ish but it’s relatively reasoned and one of my go-to Wisconsin blogs.

An amazing triple-backflip of reductionism, pandering, a whole bunch of nothing dressed up pretending to be thinking:

‘Holiday’ trees offend the religious and the secular

Just one piece:

[…]
The religious should be offended because it is an attempt to secularize a Christian symbol of Christmas. For Jews, it would be like calling a menorah a holiday candelabra. It would be misportraying a symbol of the holiday because the menorah represents the Jewish religious holiday of Hanukkah.
[…]

Really? I mean, really?

By Federman’s own writing he admits that Christmas trees didn’t even make it the Vatican Christmas display until 1982.

While using green trees during the winter solstice celebration predates Christianity, by the 16th century and possibly even the 15th century the custom of the Christmas tree developed as “devout Christians (bringing) decorated trees into their homes,” according to History.com. By 1982, Pope John Paul II formally introduced the Christmas tree custom to the Vatican.

Federman seems to ignore that many times in the past Christian leaders and movements have been very much against the pagan symbol of a Christmas tree.

Eliyahu Federman’s wiki article sounds like one of those autobiographical entries that sounds more like a resume.

Neat story of science helping out the magickal thinkers:

SEARCH FOR THE RELICS OF MARTYR QUEEN KETEVAN

DNA analysis has confirmed that a relic discovered by archaeologists amongst the ruins of St. Augustine’s Church in Goa, southeast India, is likely to be that of 17th century Queen Ketevan from the Kingdom of Kakheti in eastern Georgia.

[…]

Since 1989, various delegations from Georgia have worked together with the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) to locate Ketevan the Martyr’s relics within the Augustinian church which was founded in 1572. […]

In the year 1613, the emperor of Persia, Shah Abbas I led an army to conquer the Georgian kingdom and Queen Ketevan became his prisoner. The queen was held in Shiraz, southern Iran for approximately ten years, but in 1624, the emperor sent soldiers to convert her to the Islamic faith and to force her into his harem. However, she resisted his orders and as a consequence was tortured and strangled to death on 22 September 1624.

In 1623, a year before her death, two Augustinian friars had arrived in Shiraz to start up a mission and succeeded in gaining the queen’s trust, becoming her confessors. At some point after her death these same friars unearthed the remains of Ketevan and hid them. In 1627, some of these remains (the right arm) were taken to Goa and kept in a black box or stone sarcophagus on the second window along the Epistle side of the chapter chapel in the St. Augustine convent.

Over time the convent had been enlarged and rebuilt in places, but in 1835 the church underwent partial demolition, and in 1842 the main vault collapsed. […]

Whilst clearing the rubble the team also found an arm bone. Two other bone relics were recovered from outside the second window area, within intact stone boxes.

While the archaeological and historical data were consistent with the relic being the remains of Queen Ketevan, the archaeologists needed to somehow conclusively prove that the bone belonged to her. […] Based on the sequence variation in the mitochondrial DNA, they assigned a haplogroup U1b to the sample.

After surveying the mitochondrial DNA sequence of 22,000 individuals from the Indian sub-continent, none of them belonged to U1b haplogroup. However, two out of 30 Georgians analysed have the same haplogroup, suggesting that the bone excavated in Goa is likely to be the remnant of Queen Ketevan of Georgia.

One problem I have with this story is this: mtDNA haplogroup U1b is spread throughout eastern Europe and western Eurasia. If the convent was mostly composed if immigrants from Georgia and the surrounding regions then those women too had a decent likelihood of being U1b. Still, discovery of the box remains is a strong bit of evidence.

Part of the problem with the Obama era in the Democratic Party is that his charisma has made it hard for other Democratic Party persona to stand out. In 2014 let’s hope the Democratic party machinery big wigs find a way to position 3 or 4 personalities into the public spotlight. A few should be seen as being “anointed” by the President as his choices, while there also needs to be a couple of people who pop up as the outsiders, the other ones, who can be seen as challengers to the Democratic Party big shots.

This dynamic is lacking currently. The one advantage the tea partying GOP has is that their constant braying is making some of them household names - Rand Paul for example - who otherwise would not be known outside of their own little region.

For 2016 we can come up with a longish list of names that the GOP will be throwing in hat - Paul, Rubio, Huckabee, Santorum, Ryan, etc. Can’t do that for the Democratic Party. The GOP has benefitted from their public debates of stupidity. They may be displaying their ignorance, but at the same time getting name recognition.

I just think we have to move on from the 1990’s. We need new leadership in this country that is deeply anchored in the 21st century and what the US has become. We need leaders who know how to forge new alliances and know how to work a nation now large enough so even an interest group that only includes a couple of “%” of the population still means millions of people, and thus resources to do publicity.

This size issue I think we need to ponder upon for a while. The US is now so large that even our Representatives have districts of 700 or 800 thousand people - more than they could ever meet or hope to truly represent.

Well, depends on what you think “what the US has become” means. Even with social issues like SSM won, and ACA being put into effect, there are still going to be fights over immigration reform, minimum wage, the income gap which is contributing to worsening economic conditions for the ordinary person, etc.

Legislation requiring critical newborn heart test stalls in committees

Two Republican committee chairs are blocking bipartisan legislation that would require all newborn babies in the state to be tested for the number one killer of infants with birth defects, despite a federal recommendation by medical experts two years ago. The quick, non invasive test costs $4 per baby.

Bills in both houses of the Legislature to require the test for critical congenital heart disease in Wisconsin have languished since early 2012. This year, the bills were reintroduced, sponsored by two Republicans and backed by almost one-third of the state’s lawmakers.

And in nine months, neither has received even a public hearing.

From the comments,

Pedro the Good:

Here is an interesting scenario that never could have happened without the help of the current buffoons running the state. A woman goes to a clinic for an abortion. She is forced to get an unnecessary ultrasound and changes her mind. She then goes to a hospital that doesn’t do this simple test, and her baby ends up having the defect and dies after receiving thousands of dollars of care. To top it off, she ends up being from one of the families kicked out of Badger-care, and since she can’t afford insurance, the hospital and the state end up paying the bills. Merry Christmas from the Banana Republic of Wisconsin.

In the Senate, Leah Vukmir (R-Wauwatosa) chairs the committee where the screening bill has languished and said she believes decisions about newborn screening should be made by an existing committee of medical professionals, not state lawmakers.

But the expert committee she says she wants to empower already has weighed in on the test. Members “strongly” recommended screening all infants in Wisconsin for critical congenital heart disease — two years ago.

Fucking maddening.

As the US grows larger the feeling if isolation, ironically, will grow too. Even the Tea Partiers in their ignorance are demonstrating this phenomenon.

The population clock tells us we’re over 317 million and counting:

census.gov

By the time the next President ends a two term career we will be in 2024 and that pop-clock will probably have rolled over 350 million.

How a monolithic central government run by 100 upper legislators and 435 lower ones can respond to the diversity of demands that such a nation-state of 350 million will bring is a conceptual problem that many commentators seem to ignore.

I propose one reason why we have the current “deadlock” in Congress is indeed the result of Congress not being able to respond to the diverging choirs of the masses, who will either self divide or be herded into so many different special interests that we will have difficulty counting them.

So I made toffee tonight.

On the one hand, it was good. On the other, it could have been better. I had too much chocolate coating. It was thicker than the toffee. My fault, should have doubled the toffee recipe. Guess I’ll have to do it again (grin).

The thing is, it was the first time toffee came out /right/ with minimum problem and I’d like to share the reason why. I ran across this suggestion of using almonds. The toffee is done when it’s the color of the almonds. (Not blanched, not husked, just shelled.)

Which in turn makes toffee my new first choice for easy candy. With the corrections:
Line a 9x13 cookie sheet or cake pan with aluminum foil. Don’t bother to oil or prep it - trust me on this.

2 cups butter
2 cups white sugar
1 teaspoon salt.
1 teaspoon vanilla extract.

Optional coating: 12 ounce bag chocolate chips. 8 ounces chopped nuts of preference.
Optional extra: 8 ounces shelled almonds. If you’re using this option spread them evenly across the tinfoil before you start the toffee.
Combine in a heavy saucepan and start over medium low heat. Stir occasionally until the butter is melted and the sugar somewhat combined. Raise heat to medium and stir constantly till the color is the same as a shelled almond.
Remove from heat and immediately pour into the foil lined pan - quickly spread if necessary. (you’ve got a few seconds while it’s still not quite set.)

IF adding the chocolate and nuts: Sprinkle the chocolate chips evenly across the toffee. Wait two minutes. Spread the now-softened chocolate to cover evenly. Sprinkle the nuts evenly across the top and press down lightly.

Let cool on the countertop. If in a hurry use a refrigerator or freezer to hasten the set, but wait 15 minutes before you start so you don’t melt everything else.

The foil will peel off this butter confection with no difficulty. Break up, put what’s left from testing (if any) on a serving dish.

We just had a case here in Atlanta where a neighbor found a woman beaten nearly to death, and her little son and husband were missing. They found the toddler with his father both dead in the woods, he had killed the baby and then himself. I do understand being despondent enough to commit suicide, but I have never understood killing a child in addition to yourself. This kind of shit makes me want to throw furniture.

Hmm, yes, maybe turkey soup?

BTW, VB, why does my rye bread come out darker? How much rye flour do you use in proportion to white? Also, I like caraway seeds, but cannot find them locally (may have to resort to WW—ugh).

re: #214 jhrhv

Can you post the recipe? I loved your challah recipe. So did everyone else that ate them.

I tried making rye bread once. It came out more like a rye biscotti.

This is the fourth time I have made rye bread and the first time that I got it right. The other times I overproofed the dough and it fell.

I use a combination of whole rye flour and white bread flour, 40% rye to 60% white.

I used the recipe from Hamelman’s Bread, here are step by step photos of the process.

As noted in the wee hours of the morn, I have a program that is doing a mass search of the LDS site Familysearch.org for tree links and data. It’s kind of neat, and there are a variety of products for different platforms that can do such automation:
familysearch.org

If you’re wanting to do genealogy and want to avoid the $160/yr subscription to ancestry.com you can still get quite a bit of information on the net. However, be forewarned that the genealogy business has a very long history of scams and probably almost all genealogies that try to connect to the famous people of the past are just erroneous.
