I used to write that the GOP has lost control of the message. But after the last GOP Freakout (which was directed at “the right” and not the GOP.

But it is clear now that the message has eaten the GOP from the inside out.

Wanted to say that the Right WIng (which is, according to Reince Priebus, now identical with the GOP) is picking targets anywhere it sees anything in variance with its ever-stricter standards of ideological purity.

This growing list has come to include the Girl Scouts, single mothers who try to raise kids and still get an education, women who use contraception to avoid becoming single mothers in the first place, immigrants who work hard, love their new country but still hang onto the traditions and language of their old country, anyone gay or openly non-christian, people who cannot support a family on a minimum-wage job and turn to Food Stamps or other government aid (moochers) and public sector unionized workers (more moochers and takers bankrupting the government).

The list will continue to grow until it covers pretty much everyone except a few bearded guys with large gun collections.

FTFY.

Although it was perfectly OK for Germans, Poles, Swedes, Norwegians, etc. to continue using their mother-tongue, traditions, culture, etc, even after they had been here for many, many years. I remember as a kid seeing a Polish language newspaper in Buffalo and attending a Polish wedding and that was only 60 yrs ago.

Many cities have had small niches of “foreign” types in their Anglo-Saxon midst, such as Greeks, Jews, Cubans, Indians, etc, considered perhaps “exotic” but maintaining a presence and successfully integrating into the business community, if not into the entirety of social life.

I remember the old cynical saying of the ’60s: “If you’re Black, get back; if you’re Brown, stick around; if you’re White, you’re all right.” It’s more complicated than that, of course, because today, it’s more likely to be, “If you’re wealthy, you’ll be healthy; if you’re poor, hit the door.”

We’ll welcome you heartily if you have plenty of money and can grease the right palms, but if you need anything, go back to where you came from.

Of course, the majority of modern people on this entire continent come from somewhere else—only Natives can claim they’ve been on the North American continent for thousands of years—most who came later didn’t even know it or they existed until they saw land to be conquered and exploited for their own gain.

And in Kiev…

26 Wendell Zurkowitz (slave of the waffle light)  Mon, Feb 3, 2014 4:40:39am

People who have no idea what patriotism and love of country really mean (like not screaming about nullification or secession every time an elected government passes legislation they disapprove of) are also the ones who stick to external symbols associated with often outdated ideas of patriotism: flag pins, pledges of allegiance, anthems, and, of course, language.

And yes, there is nothing that any normal person could have against someone expressing their love of America any way they choose. And if they choose to do it in their native tongue, they are taking nothing away from America in doing so.

Corruption across EU ‘breathtaking’ - EU Commission

bbc.co.uk

“The extent of corruption in Europe is “breathtaking” and it costs the EU economy about 120bn euros (£99bn) annually, the European Commission says.

“EU Home Affairs Commissioner Cecilia Malmstroem is now presenting a full report on the problem.

“Writing in Sweden’s Goeteborgs-Posten daily, she said corruption was eroding trust in democracy and draining resources from the legal economy.”

A year after snub, Chris Christie will speak at CPAC 2014

After being denied a speaking slot last year at the largest annual gathering of conservatives, New Jersey Republican Gov. Chris Christie has accepted an invitation to speak at the 2014 Conservative Political Action Conference next month, Yahoo News has learned.

“We are very excited to announce that New Jersey Governor Chris Christie will speak at CPAC 2014,” American Conservative Union Chairman Al Cardenas told Yahoo News. “At this year’s CPAC - and through our theme ‘ACU’s Golden Anniversary: Getting It Right for 50 Years’ - we will celebrate how conservatism has shaped our past and look to the future with excitement. This will be the year that conservatives begin pulling the nation back from the brink of Barack Obama’s disaster with a movement that inspires, unites, and discovers new solutions to our current challenges.”

They used to have a lock on around 30% of the electorate and then just have to play enough to the middle to round out a majority.

Now the standards for appealing to the Right WIng have grown so demanding that satisfying them means pissing off the rest of the country: women, minorities, gays, union members, minimum-wage or union workers, etc…

Call me cynical, but that a corporate advertisement has stirred up a shitpile of outrage is, well, very strange, considering that Coke, which basically makes carbonated sugar-water, like so many other American-based (well, I suppose they still are) corporations have actually become international in their practices, if not in protecting their money and assets.

Can we defend the actions of corporations while damning the govt that corporations would like to completely control?

Does a feel-good ad from Coke make you feel better about them, or does this glass make you feel better about drinking junk?

Will your Coke taste better in a specially designed $20 Riedel glass?

It actually might taste better within a certain spectrum of “taste”. That’s going from the fact that for other carbonated beverages such as wine or beer different shapes of glasses are used to enhance how you encounter the scents and bubbles of the drink.

Beyond that, I think the main amusement of the commercial was that when it showed there were 3-4 immediate comments here that the right-wing nuts were going to explode over it — and they promptly did. And it was not an outrageous, pot-stirring commercial. It was a feel-good Coke commercial.

Chandler PD: Woman injects feces into husband’s IV

A 65-year-old Sun Lakes woman faces a charge of attempted first-degree murder after Chandler police said she injected feces into the IV of her husband, who was recovering from surgery.

Rose Mary Vogel was in a Chandler Regional Medical Center recovery room with her 66-year-old husband around 1:30 p.m. Thursday after he underwent surgery on his heart, according to the police report.

Vogel is a retired nurse who had worked at Chandler Regional, police said.

“This was not your typical Rose Mary. It was like another person or a demon got a hold of her or she snapped,” said neighbor Mary Lola Reese. Reese, and her husband John have known Mary Rose Vogel and her husband for more than a decade and never saw anything out of the ordinary.

“They seemed very happy. We never expected anything,” said John Reese.

“At least 60 people were killed and many others injured, 15 of whom died of their injuries,” Kamatari added.” (More)

Good morning lizards!

I’m quite impressed with Roger Goodell’s weather-control abilities. Make it feel like early spring for the Superbowl, and hold off the 5-8” of snow until Monday, and the ice/freezing rain until Tuesday night!

Also, I’m happy (////) to see that the wingnut right has stooped to the occasion re: the Coke commercial. Among the people I watched the game with was a Latina woman who works in internet marketing. We both looked at each other and said, “this is going to piss off a bunch of people”. She then followed twitter for the rest of the game to see just how bad it got. It got bad.

Pitchers and catchers report February 13/14. Woo!!!!

The Super Bowl was a big bunch of meh. It was over from the opening drive by Denver. They just never got in the game, and by the 4th Quarter it looked like Denver just wanted to go home, running out the clock.

Awful.

But the music performances were kick-ass. Great national anthem by Renee Fleming, and the halftime show was awesome. Bruno Mars brought it and RHCP rocked the house.

But that just couldn’t make up for the lackluster game.

Even the ads were mostly meh. My favorites were the Radio Shack and Bud commercials. And what was Bob Dylan doing shilling cars?

“mestizos”? Is this a new meme on the wingnut right? That “white” Hispanics can be Real ‘Murkans, but those with alternate ancestries are an alien presence here?

That’s the way it’s always been. Cuban exiles in Charlotte (white European types) were always welcomed over the years. Mexicans? Haitians? Fuggetaboutit. They are about as welcome as the Vietnamese refugees during the ’70s. Those groups continue to struggle. The small Indian population is looked at askew, but most tend to be well-educated (teaching in the colleges, engineering and computer cos for the most part) and have decent incomes; they even hold a kind of “India Fest” every year downtown (I’ve been to it—it’s more like a bazaar than anything else).

If you don’t have white skin, you’d better be well-educated and/or have money to be welcome in the south.

Here in the Czech Republic, RC Cola is fairly popular. Of course, the Czechs have their own soft drink, Kofola.

It tastes different from either Coke, Pepsi, or RC Cola; it’s an acquired taste, but it’s actually quite good.

Suspect arrested in arson at Neighbours nightclub

Seattle Police arrested 30-year-old Musab Masmari Saturday morning in connection with the arson at Neighbours nightclub on January 1.

Police took Masmari into custody as he was en route to the airport.

Police say following the arrest, Masmari was interviewed by detectives and later booked into the King County Jail for Investigation of Arson.

It was just after midnight on New Year’s Eve while nearly 700 people crammed into Neighbours for a celebration when customers noticed the staircase at the iconic gay club was on fire.

Management at the iconic gay club in Capitol Hill later discovered a gasoline container near the stairs.

No one was injured.

Actually, it’s limited by production quota, according to this. But I also think a lot of Europeans would balk at buying anything much containing it.

“In the European Union (EU), HFCS, known as isoglucose in sugar regime, is subject to a production quota. In 2005, this quota was set at 303,000 tons; in comparison, the EU produced an average of 18.6 million tons of sugar annually between 1999 and 2001.[38] Wide-scale replacement of sugar with HFCS has not occurred in the EU. For labeling purpose, syrup with more than 50% of glucose, like HFCS 42, called Glucose-Fructose Syrup(GFS), and more than 50% of fructose, like HFCS 55, called Fructose-Glucose Syrup(FGS), although production within Europe is minimal.”

HFCS itself is not the cause. However, HFCS is the sweetener of choice for the plethora of ultra-calorie-dense crap that Americans eat.

Having embarked on a weight loss regimen that I believe it’s fair to call ‘very successful’, and having been a typical junk-swilling bachelor for most of my life before that, I feel pretty qualified to remark on it. Most of my fellow denizens eat a whole bunch of stuff that is preposterously dense, caloricaly speaking, leading to massive levels of overeating. Our stomachs are keyed on volume, not density, so a candy bar or a coke that has the caloric content of a full meal doesn’t fill like a real full meal, and leads people to eating more.

A lot of researchers maintain that HFCS is metabolized differently than cane sugar (sucrose). I think it’s the amount of consumption that really makes a difference. When you’re drinking 2 or 3 soft drinks a day, rather than the occasional one that we drank when I was a kid, you’re going to put the lbs on.

As I understand, HFCS is more like fructose, which both metabolize faster than sucrose, being simpler sugars. So, your system gets a bigger influx of carbohydrates with each drink or meal. And, if you check your food labels, HFCS is in practically everything, even foods that are not sweets, so you’re getting a constant infusion of sugar into your system.

To a large extent I agree. High caloric density makes trying to lose inches worse. At the same time there is some basis to think it’s not the only thing, that corn based sugar has issues above and beyond its caloric density.

oh - and as someone who used to bother, has gained, and knows he has to get back to where he’s supposed to be, congrats on maintaining. FWIW, what worked in the past - and the reason for my gain - is that I took measure of how many calories I was eating and made sure I was burning that much. It’s oddly easier to increase the out than it is to decrease the in.

And that’s not likely to change, given that the sugar import tariffs are not actually in place to support corn growers, they are in place to protect domestic sugar growers (both cane and beets). The problem is, as Newt Gingrich said in one of the 2012 primary debates, the sugar industry in the US is very good at defending its price supports and tariffs. Whenever there is any move to change either, they trot out sugar beet farmers who talk about how the change will cost them their farms and ruin their children’s lives.

The problem is that the news media eats that kind of story up and it is almost impossible to reply to. This is because one cannot say “I know what I am proposing will hurt this man badly, but it will do good for some many others.” without sounding like some sort of monster. Hence the anti-HFCS activists are generally stuck.

re: #127 kirkspencer

Yep. Key to my success is portion control. I spend five minutes each morning measuring the amounts of stuff I put in my lunchbox, and an additional minute or so measuring out dinner when I get home. At restaurants I have to eyeball it, but I’ve gotten pretty good at that and, in any case, I know the numbers. Beef is 5oz for a serving (in my case), so when a restaurant has a 12oz steak on the menu, I cut off a bit less than half of it and there’s the serving. Rest goes in the doggie bag for later in the week (twice a week, never two days in a row).

re: #128 Dr Lizardo

Yep. Like the example above: serving size for beef is around 5oz, most restaurant steaks are 10oz+. I’ve seen them go up to 16oz. I used to eat the whole thing, nowadays I can’t fathom doing something like that.

If there are 150 calories in a “serving” of Cheetos, and there are six servings in a bag, if you eat the entire bag while online, you’ve consumed half the calories you need to get through the day of sitting on your ass. Add a few sodas, and you’re done for the day. You’ve consumed nothing but junk, but wait—you’ve probably eaten a couple of meals, too, at least. : ) (This is not about you specifically, but just an example of how easy it can be for anyone to pile on the lbs.) I think we’ve become too sedentary as a nation, on the whole. Thus, the initiatives of FLOTUS on eating and exercising.

That’s another thing about winter, though. In the past month, the weather has been so awful here, it’s hard to expend many calories in a small apt when you don’t really have to leave it for much. Today and tomorrow, we have rain, even though the temp is mild, in the 50s.

That explains it. Czechs I’ve known who’ve traveled to the US and had a Coca-Cola or whatnot have all said “It tasted funny”.

Kosher Coke is made with cane sugar here. Sadly, it’s not available year-round.

We’ve given up on store-bought soda and got a SodaStream a couple of years ago. I guess that puts me in bad stead with the Dudebros, but whatever.

EDIT: I see this has been pointed out already. Note to self - read back first, post after.

With the cheetohs and soda, it wouldn’t matter how much you exercised. Sedentary or not, when you’re doing 2K cals without even touching real food for your ‘real meals’, you’re putting on weight.

As for winter exercise? Not as fun as going outside certainly, but you can do calisthenics just about anywhere that you can fit a human body. Pushups, situps, jumping jacks; it’s how I’ve been getting through the winter.

Oh, for sure! When I come back to the States, I am a little overwhelmed at the size of the portions. Even before I left for China, I switched to buying junior meals at Burger King and similar places, because the regular meals were too much.

I lost 4 kilos after moving to China, mostly because there are no fast food joints to tempt me, other than KFC.

Even in the winter, I’ll still bundle up and take a one-hour walk around the neighborhood, or in the forests surrounding the area. I may not do it every day during the winter months, but at least once every other day. During spring/summer/autumn, I’ll go out daily.

Missouri Senate Committee Votes To Jail Federal Agents Who Enforce Gun Laws

The Missouri Senate’s General Laws Committee voted 5-1 last week in favor of a bill that purports to make it a crime for federal law enforcement agents to enforce the nation’s gun laws. Under the bill’s terms, these agents could be imprisoned for up to a year and be fined up to $1,000.

Much of this unconstitutional legislation mirrors a bill Gov. Jay Nixon (D) vetoed last year. In September, Missouri’s overwhelmingly Republican senate came just one vote shy of the votes necessary to override Nixon’s veto. Like the bill Nixon vetoed last year, the new legislation contains a provision to arm public school personnel. It also would lower the minimum age to receive a concealed weapons permit from 21 to 19.

re the ‘doesn’t matter how much you exercise’ line, no.

Years ago I was eating 5500 calories a day (plus/minus a few hundred) and did not gain weight. Some of that was junk. It is, by the way, why I’m rather conscious of the intake/outgo formula. Because my first balloon was when I quit doing that job and found it hard to cut back the intake.

But if you’re in near-constant motion for 12-14 hours a day that includes bursts of high intensity effort, you’re going to burn a lot of calories.

re: #130 wheat-dogghazi

Portions have been increasing for many years. In the mid-70s, I worked weekends at Perkins Pancake House. I was appalled at the plates—3 egg omelets, 3 pancakes (or a pile of hash browns), 3 pieces of bacon or sausage. Plus gallons of coffee with sugar and cream. Most people ate it all, but a good deal was thrown into the garbage, too.

These days, I have a 2 egg omelet (w/green peppers & mushrooms, about a tbsp of ea), topped w/salsa and a piece of whole grain toast for breakfast and it fills me up quite nicely. Or oatmeal or whole grain cereal of some sort w/no toast. I esp like steel cut oatmeal w/raisins and walnuts, sweetened w/a little Splenda. That offers enough variety for me without a lot of fuss. For a snack, a piece of fruit. This is what I like to maintain, but it’s the rest of the day that is problematic, esp since I cook for others, too. At least I’ve been able to get my grandson to eat salads…

Israel. The company is Israeli; the factory is in the West Bank.

And that combination means that Israel is profiteering on the backs of Palestinians even though the company has Palestinian workers, pays them same wages as Israelis, and provides them all the same benefits as Israelis working there.

If Sodastream didn’t employ Palestinians, the same people would complain that the Israelis were discriminating against Palestinians and depriving them the opportunity to work and get ahead.

Combined, we’re down almost 70 lbs total here; I’m around 20 and the better half is closing in on 50. She took a healthy eating course offered by a local hospital and it’s been nothing short of amazing.

Calories is the killer. We both started using My Fitness Pal to keep track of calories, as well as food groups. I’ve kicked up my exercise program as well. I’ve plateaued a little bit, but am shooting to be down 40 by summer.

As far as HFCS: the podcast The Skeptic’s Guide to the Universe covered that recently. Upshot was HFCS doesn’t metabolize any differently than sugar. It’s cheaper than sugar, so therefore it’s freaking everywhere.

Point, but I’ll note that this is today’s average case.

I maintain that one of the problems is that up till the 1950s (give or take a decade) that sort of workday was ‘average’.

There are jobs today that are still constant effort but they’re becoming fewer and fewer. Or more accurately they’re getting more and more assistance that’s reducing the amount of labor required. It’s a slow-motion version of the problem I had: Used to be I (we) burned 5500-6000 calories and it didn’t matter what crap it was we just needed the calories. Then we quit needing as much, but that’s how much our eyes and stomachs were used to so we didn’t stop - and it built, gram by gram by kilogram, the bellies and butts and all the rest of the bloated flab so many of us carry.

But yeah, it’s not average any more.

Snopes:

“…Although the photographs and video footage did originate with the July 2009 mass wedding event, and they do show pre-pubescent girls dressed in clothing resembling bridal garb holding hands with older men, the young girls in these pictures were not being married off to adult males; they were relatives of the brides and grooms (typically nieces and cousins ranging in age from three to eight years old) who were merely ancillary participants in the ceremony, performing a function similar to that of flower girls in western-style weddings. Even though news accounts document that they were undeniably present, the older women who did get married that day weren’t apparent in the recorded images because, unlike the style of weddings most westerners are accustomed to, brides don’t take center stage at this type of event:

The 450 brides shared none of the glamour, taking seats among the audience of around 1,000 party guests: most couples had already taken part in religious ceremonies elsewhere, with more marriages planned for the next few days.

The brides and grooms were separated during the wedding party since observant Muslims are not supposed to mix in public.

Forbes disagrees with the number of employees.

“Why Do 1.4 Million Americans Work At Walmart, With Many More Trying To?”

forbes.com

So Loosertarian Comic is wrong from the very start.

I looked into those figures myself a while ago. The 2 million figure comes from a less than reliable source (and is out of date), while Forbes and another business source put the number of wage earners at 1.2 to 1.4 million. Hourly workers include drivers and warehouse workers, who are likely paid more than the retail floor workers.

It’s pretty nutty to post a Benghazi ribbon on your Twitter page while at the same time calling for a holy war.

Yes it is, but it makes sense from that loon’s point of view. He/she wants a holy war against Islam, thinking that will destroy “the hostile other” and unify western nations under a Christian banner.

‘Nutty’ is s good word for it indeed.

Massive deflection is massive.

Because they’ve got nothing as a proper response.

“We want to leave people the hell alone!”

“What about all of these people (non-WASPs) that you don’t actually leave alone at all?”

“LOOK, SQUIRREL!”

I kinda wish that thread hadn’t gotten derailed into attacking/defending Islam, and had instead stayed on-target. “No, we’re not talking about Islam. You said you want to leave people alone, I provided several groups of people that you most certainly do NOT leave the hell alone, what is your response?”

Here in the Czech Republic, RC Cola is fairly popular. Of course, the Czechs have their own soft drink, Kofola.

It tastes different from either Coke, Pepsi, or RC Cola; it’s an acquired taste, but it’s actually quite good.

Late to the game but on the increasingly rare occasion I want a soda, I buy a mexican coke & fanta & mix them for Spezi which I learned to love as a soldier stationed in Germany in the early 80’s.

2. Did you know that 8.85 is an average, so 50% make MOAR than 8.85?

4. Did you know most miminum wage Walmart employees do not work 8-hr day?
5. Where did you learn math?

Actually, the 8.85 is probably mean not median, which could make this a ‘Bill Gates in the bar’ situation.

In case you don’t know it: 9 people making minimum wage are in the bar when Bill Gates walks in. The average income of everyone in the bar is now several million a year.

The garbage crew just came down my street. They stopped to pick up my garbage, and when the truck went to go off down the street, it just sat there and spun wheels. The driver had to back up and floor it to get enough traction to continue down the street.

This does not bode well for the afternoon rush, especially since they’ve upped the possible snowfall totals to between 5 and 8 inches on my part of LI.

Happy Monday!

Alice Walton, billionaire road menace:

Walton has been involved in at least three automobile accidents. During a 1983 Thanksgiving family reunion near Acapulco, Mexico, Walton lost control of a rented Jeep and plunged into a ravine, shattering her leg. She was airlifted out of Mexico and would undergo more than two dozen surgeries and is said to suffer lingering pain from her injuries. In an April 1989 incident, she struck and killed 50-year-old Oleta Hardin, who had stepped into a road. No charges were filed. In a 1998 incident, she is reported to have hit a gas meter while driving under the influence. She paid a $925 fine and served no jail time.

On October 7, 2011, her 62nd birthday, she was again arrested for driving while intoxicated in Weatherford, Texas, after a dinner with friends in Fort Worth. Walton’s attorney released a statement acknowledging the incident and expressing regret. The charges were dropped by Texas prosecutors in September 2013 without formal charges being filed (emphasis added)

Way to go, prosecutors. I wonder how many migrants and local working stiffs get similar consideration?

Alice Walton, billionaire road menace:

None. Trial lawyers are predatory, tending to focus on weaker prey. Going after a billionaire means a much-longer period pre-trial period, as her lawyers throw up every delaying tactic they can think of, proofing the state’s evidence to stand up to scrutiny by defense experts, and then a longer, more difficult trial against top-flight defense lawyers. And all for a victory that won’t count much more in the prosecutors stats than nailing an average joe for the same crime.

re: #235 Dark_Falcon

You’ve described the situation, then painted malice on top unnecessarily.

The only attorneys more over-worked than public defenders are public prosecutors. It’s not predation that drives the issue, it’s the workload. Because if they pursue one of the hard cases as avidly as we might desire they’ll leave hundreds on the floor. And that means hundreds who would run into ‘speedy trial’ issues - another injustice we already suffer.

Finland has a schedule of fines that are based on a percentage of total salary. When the head of Nokia got busted for speeding, he got a ticket totalling around $140,000.

That would make prosecutors more interested in pursuing a case.

Asshole pulls rotten prank and almost gets shot for having done so:

RomanAtwood’s videos get considerable views and many consider a lot of them to be really, really, funny. While a fake drive-by shooting may offer a hardy laugh, the humor is far outweighed by the potential danger associated with making people believe you are shooting at them with live firearms, as evidenced by the video posted to YouTube.

In the video, RomanAtwood installed “very loud speakers” in his truck “with gun SFX.” As he neared his victims he’d play the sound file, producing a convincingly realistic sound of gunfire.

The first couple of runs went smoothly enough, but on the last scene somebody pulled out a very real gun and fired off several rounds as RomanAtwood raced away.

This is a good way to get shot.

After all, civil law is based on a “preponderance of the evidence”, not a “reasonable doubt”.

To be noted by the coach and their peers, essentially singling themselves out?

If it were the other way around and the coach were a Muslim leading the kids in prayer, the Christian families would be suing so fast your head would spin. But if it’s a Christian prayer, well, the non-believers can just excuse themselves. No. Sorry. Doesn’t work that way. Either any type of prayer being led by the coach is acceptable and doesn’t infringe on the rights of the students or having a figure of authority in what is supposed to be a secular setting lead a prayer infringes on the students’ freedom of religion.
