CNN’s Don Lemon: Disappearance of MH370 Could Be “Supernatural”

Good grief
Weird • Views: 20,192

YouTube

For the past week we’ve seen the MH370 conspiracy theories and wild speculations get more and more absurd, but CNN’s Don Lemon finally took it all the way to the Farthest Frontier of Major News Anchor Derpitude, speculating on air that the airplane’s disappearance might have had supernatural causes.

After a commercial airline pilot had trouble explaining where the missing plane could be, CNN anchor Don Lemon turned Sunday to Brad Meltzer, host of the History Channel’s “Decoded.” The two spoke about the possibility that there may be no logical explanation for why the jet vanished nine days ago.

“Especially today, on a day when we deal with the supernatural, we go to church, the supernatural power of God. You deal with all of that,” Lemon said to Meltzer. “People are saying to me, why aren’t you talking about the possibility — and I’m just putting it out there — that something odd happened to this plane, something beyond our understanding?”

Oh, my aching logic center.

for most people “beyond my understanding” would cover a lot of ground

People are saying to me, why aren’t you talking about the possibility — and I’m just putting it out there — that something odd happened to this cable news channel, something utterly beyond our understanding?

Why is the sky blue?

Why do we have tides?

Must be the supernatural.

Sorry, but I just have to object.

Yes, the region might be one noted for Cthulhu cult activity, but Cthulhu is predominantly know for attacking boats. There is no evidence of him ever attacking planes. Now Ithaqua has attacked planes repeatedly, but can be ruled out due to the latitude, which means we could be looking at either Cthuga or an avatar of Nyarlethotep.

Feh, experts.

You’re RIGHT! It could only have been a langsuir:

Also spelled langsuir or lang suyar, it is said to be the ghost of a woman who died while giving birth to a stillborn child which turns into a pontianak, or during pregnancy before the forty days of uncleanness have expired. The mother’s grief changes her into a type of flying banshee. To prevent a pregnant woman’s corpse from becoming a lang suir, glass beads are placed into the mouth, an egg is placed in each armpit, and needles are placed in the hands. The lang suir can appear as a beautiful woman with long nails (a traditional mark of beauty), ankle-length hair and dressed in green. They also have the ability to take the form of an owl with long talons. Being fond of eating fish, they usually haunt coastal areas and attack pregnant women out of jealousy. It is possible to tame a lang suir by cutting off her long nails and stuffing the hair into the hole at the back of her neck.

This one’s really creepy. Man, I hope it wasn’t one of these things.

Toyol

Often translated into English as “goblin”, the toyol is actually a small child spirit invoked from a dead human fetus. Traditionally described as looking more or less like a naked or near-naked toddler, modern depictions often give them green or greyish skin, fangs, and pointy ears. The toyol may be used by its master to steal things from other people, or to do mischief. Because they are childlike in their thinking, valuables can be protected by scattering beans on the floor, or leaving sweets or toys next to them, all of which will distract the toyol. It is said that the owner of a toyol may become rich, but at the expense of the health, fortune and even the lives of members of their family.

I think we can safely rule out a Penanggalan

The penanggalan is another type of female vampire attracted to the blood of newborn infants, which appears as the head of a woman from which her entrails trail, used to grasp her victim. There are several stories of her origins. One is that she was a woman who was sitting meditating in a large wooden vat used for making vinegar when she was so startled that her head jumped up from her body, pulling her entrails with it. Another has her as a normal woman during the day, whose head and entrails leave her body at night. If a baby is expected, branches from a type of thistle are placed around the doors or windows to protect the house, since her entrails will be caught by the thorns.[12] The penanggalan is known in Thai as krasue[13] and a similar Philippine ghost called the manananggal which preys on pregnant women with an elongated proboscis-like tongue.[14]

Europe analysts say sanctions won’t dissuade Putin

Andrew Weiss, a White House expert on Russia and Ukraine under former president Bill Clinton, said the West must consider passing sanctions that will hurt.

“There’s not enough bite in the package,” he said. “You have to ask yourself what’s the purpose and it’s not clear.”

Russian stock market actually rose today so I guess the sanctions were weaker than expected.

Kevin Trudeau Sentenced to 10 Years In Prison
Jurors convicted Kevin Trudeau in November for defying a court order

Source: nbcchicago.com

“A federal judge sentenced TV pitchman Kevin Trudeau Monday to 10 years in prison for bilking consumers through his infomercials.

“Prosecutors asked Judge Ronald Guzman for the 10-year sentence at a Chicago hearing. Defense lawyers contended the 50-year-old from suburban Chicago should serve less than two years for his criminal-contempt conviction.

“In a scathing filing last week, prosecutors called Trudeau “an unrepentant … huckster” and said they could think of no comparable case of someone cheating people so brazenly. The defense called the characterization “overblown and unfair.”

There’s a conference this week on Human Evolution, that the creationists will definitely avoid:

Evolution of Modern Humans - From Bones to Genomes

How did our species, Homo sapiens, become what it is today? How did our ancestors spread across the globe? How did their bodies and minds evolve?

The study of these fascinating questions has seen a veritable revolution in recent years: genome sequencing of ancient and extant humans, and their relatives, has revealed our evolutionary history in unprecedented detail and sheds light on how humans adapted; new analyses of fossils and archaeology reveal what makes humans so unique.

Our Cell Symposium ‘Evolution of Modern Humans — From Bones to Genomes’ pays homage to this revolution by bringing together an uniquely broad mix of world-class researchers who study the evolution of our species from various angles — from palaeoanthropology to genetics, genomics and archaeogenetics, through to the study of cultural and cognitive processes. This meeting will synthesize our current picture of the evolution of modern humans and formulate the most exciting questions for future research.

Session Topics:

Human genetics and genomics
Adaptation
Archaeogenetics
Palaeoanthropology
Cognition and culture

There’s no room left for Adam.

Just an aside about how hard it is to find something in the ocean, even when you know where it is, try doing a “man overboard” drill on the SF bay in a 30 knot wind and see how long you or your crew can see a five foot high bright orange flag on a buoy.

If you lose track of it for a couple of seconds, or your crew forgets to look, you can spend ten to fifteen minutes sailing time just to find the damn thing again, and it’s usually within 100 yards of your boat all the time.

I used to watch CNN 5 or 6 years ago (I needed something to watch while doing my physical therapy and daytime TV leaves a lot to be desired), and even then it was obvious it was heading downhill. It’s sad, but most TV is all about the lowest common denominator.

Still, I suppose if Cosmos riles up the likes of the Baptist Press and Breitbart’s John Nolte then it can’t be all bad:

A new ‘Cosmos,’ same message

[…]

I think some of the historical greats from the science hall of fame who were men of great Christian commitment like Isaac Newton, Johannes Kepler and even Galileo, were they alive today, would find the show captivating even while rejecting its atheistic slant. As Kepler once said: Science is thinking God’s thoughts after him. Had Kepler or Newton hosted the original broadcast instead of Sagan, or the new one instead of Tyson, it is likely the opening scene would begin with the words, “The heavens declare the glory of God.”

SCIENCE MAG: ‘COSMOS’ ATTACK ON CHURCH GETS HISTORY ‘DOWNRIGHT WRONG’

[…]

The militant atheist movement, which can be every bit as deceitful, dishonest, and obnoxious as any phony television evangelist, bows at the altar of science. But when science disrupts their faith, as we can see in the “Cosmos” episode, they are forced to revert to anti-science dishonesty.

As far as I am concerned, Cosmos contains very little science. It is mostly a visual entertainment spectacular, with lofty English narration. The new version takes tremendous liberty in glossing over what are the important details that make science the human discipline that it is.

I will even agree with the Baptist Press and the Nolte’s of the world in this: Cosmos is as much about story telling for creating a new belief system as it is about anything else.

There is a movement, now some years old, to get scientists to “tell stories” more, in order to reach the masses. To come up with narratives to replace the much older religious/nationalistic stories around which we form our societal bonds.

I haven’t seen the new Cosmos remake but I do think it’s helpful to have scientists doing outreach to the public. I saw a PBS version of Brief History of Time and went out and bought the book. I read nothing but physics books (the dumbed down ones for the public) for years after that. When I visit the UK I’m always impressed that they’ll show historical documentaries or science shows on the big TV channels in prime time. That would be unthinkable here. “People are saying to me, why aren’t you talking about the possibility — and I’m just putting it out there — that something odd happened to this plane, something beyond our understanding?”

Mini-tutorial on RADAR:
With classic radar of the ww2 era, when monitoring a target aircraft, that target does not cooperate with the scanning. The signal in the scanner-to-target direction decays inversely with the distance squared. The reflected signal back to the scanner decays *also* with distance the same way. If the distance to a target is doubled, the signal reflected back to the RADAR station is lower by a factor of 16. That math is unforgiving, for passive radar.

Most modern “radar” doesn’t work that way. Instead, aircraft “targets” are cooperative, and respond/reply to “radar” signaling messages from any/all control towers.

With this cooperative arrangement, a doubling of distance between tower and aircraft still results in RF signal reaching the aircraft being weaker by a factor of 4. Ditto for the reply signal received back at the tower —it’s also weaker by a factor of 4.

Since the reply signal is a fresh broadcast (not an echo) the factors of 4 in each direction are independent and are not multiplied together.

So our modern “radar” scales way better with distance, except when an aircraft’s replies are shut down, of course.

It (like so much of these religious books) is in all likelihood a made-up story. The passage is dropped from some critical versions of the NT and thus put in footnotes in some translations, to the consternation of literalists.

“Let he who is without sin throw the first stone”

I know I learned that in RC school in relation to the bible.

A stone sails out of the back of the crowd, hits the woman and kills her instantly. Jesus says “Mom, what are you doing here?”

I know I learned that in high school.

(sorry, I just couldn’t resist.)

I find the whole thing a bit frustrating.

Yeah, I can see that, but if you think of it less as Science, and more as Scientainment, maybe that will help.

For whatever reason, most regular folks find Science dull and boring, and more than a little intimidating. One problem we have is explaining it to Mundanes Muggles stupid people regular folks. Tyson, and Sagan before him, were trying to convey the excitement of Science and some of the wonders of the universe without tipping over into lecturing.

We’re not really the audience for this show, or its predecessor.

>”It’s apparent from the precedents cited by the judge that, once upon a time, the wellbeing of expectant mothers was the main priority of Americans. Women’s claims to physical autonomy and good health overruled any claims of ‘personhood’ for their fetuses, or of the rights of men to force decisions on them about the birth process. Paternal rights never extend to control over the mother. The question is, do we have enough rational judges left in this country to guarantee it?”

[yes, I know the thread has moved on, but got interrupted here and wanted to finish this point]

Maybe. There are apparent references to it among contemporary works, and the earliest copies of alleged Johannine authorship show diacritical marks there. (Scholarly argument of what these particular marks mean as they can have several uses, but one of the uses is similar to that of modern ellipses: ‘we’re skipping something here, moving on to the important stuff’.

Hodges for one argues that this passage was set aside because it made it appear Jesus was arguing in favor of adultery.

Humans understand the world in terms of story. Stories WORK (at least for a first approximation). That’s how leaders motivate followers—they tell stories.

Ignoring that just ignores human nature—-and kinda defeats the purpose.

I’m sorry, aren’t those all books from the Old Testament?

Didn’t Jesus stop the stoning of an alleged adultress?

After noting that only those who had never sinned were the only ones that could do so.

Since Jesus made it clear that hate was a major sin, the dickwad behind that sign certainly doesn’t qualify as sinless.

How about the start of responses to our Pioneer Message? Or probe to find out who’s dicking around with star system inquiries far beyond their primitive needs?

Hey, we’re just asking questions here…..
