Wow, close call
U.S. Officers Kill Armed Civilians in Yemen Capital

A United States Special Operations commando and a Central Intelligence Agency officer in Yemen shot and killed two armed Yemeni civilians who tried to kidnap them while the Americans were in a barber shop in the country’s capital two weeks ago, American officials said on Friday.

The two Americans were whisked out of the volatile Middle East nation within a few days of the shooting, with the blessing of the Yemeni government, two senior American officials said.

Fox just needs to interview Christine O’Donnell.

“Bill Clinton is charged of — for much more serious accounts of fraud than a mistake that Newt Gingrich got in. If you examine almost anybody’s tax records you can find something to charge them on. I hate to admit, but taxes are very complicated, so you can find something to bring almost anybody.

“And then there’s also the issue of murder with Vincent Foster. That’s a much more serious charge than failing to seek legal advice, and yet we’re all just blowing that off, and everybody’s trying to focus on Newt Gingrich like a witch hunt, to bring him to the stake and burn him, because they don’t like the policy that he’s behind. And unfortunately, the policy that he reps works, so if you can’t attack the policy, they’re trying to attack the man behind it.”

It’s the local one for me that I’ve quit going to at all because they never had what I wanted.
I’ve never been a huge Walmart shopper, but would occasionally go there to get a few wildly disparate items and avoid having to make 3 or 4 separate stops. But for the last year or two, if they had sunscreen, they’d be out of plant fertilizer and pencils, and only have the wrong size watch batteries. The wreckage is more than a mile under water, so deep that submersibles cannot get near it. So it’s no wonder they haven’t found the plane. Credible news orgs would accept the fact that news-worthy updates from the search will be few and far between, and move on. That’s because a bunch of people bought the toaster:

amazon.com

I love the first review:

This is PERFECT for making tuna fish sandwiches, but be sure to use Miracle Whip to keep things authentic.

Okay, it’s a little on the light side, but if you only use it on Sunday mornings for a little communion at home with your mimosa, it should work just fine for a good while. It’s also great for raucous Baptist fondue parties as well. I would recommend using white bread for the best image, as using whole grain tends to make Jesus look like he has zits. The really great thing about this toaster is that you can make your purchase price back (or whenever you need some quick cash) by selling a piece of Jesus image miracle toast on E-bay or Craig’s List. A fun suggestion is to sneak a piece of the toast in on an evangelical church pot luck dinner. I almost guarantee at least one fainting spell.

However, I am a bit confused about how the image can possibly be of the Man himself, since he never sat for a portrait that we know of. I mean, how do we know this image isn’t just based on some hippie from the 60’s, or a generic guy with Caucasian Semite features from the old days. I guess ya just have to have some faith…

Folks in that part of the world do sure love to hurl the word “fascist” around. It reminds me of George Orwell’s essay on the use of the word fascist as an epithet.

orwell.ru

ETA: If you read Orwell’s essay, you’ll see the idea that of “liberal (or left of center) fascism” isn’t anything new, and Jonah Goldberg didn’t come up with it on his own - it’s actually an idea that’s been around for quite awhile.

Socialists: Defenders of old-style capitalism (example, Sir Ernest Benn) maintain that Socialism and Fascism are the same thing. Some Catholic journalists maintain that Socialists have been the principal collaborators in the Nazi-occupied countries. The same accusation is made from a different angle by the Communist party during its ultra-Left phases. In the period 1930-35 the Daily Worker habitually referred to the Labour Party as the Labour Fascists. This is echoed by other Left extremists such as Anarchists. Some Indian Nationalists consider the British trade unions to be Fascist organizations.

Communists: A considerable school of thought (examples, Rauschning, Peter Drucker, James Burnham, F. A. Voigt) refuses to recognize a difference between the Nazi and Soviet régimes, and holds that all Fascists and Communists are aiming at approximately the same thing and are even to some extent the same people. Leaders in The Times (pre-war) have referred to the U.S.S.R. as a ‘Fascist country’. Again from a different angle this is echoed by Anarchists and Trotskyists.

“By ‘Fascism’ they mean, roughly speaking, something cruel, unscrupulous, arrogant, obscurantist, anti-liberal and anti-working-class. Except for the relatively small number of Fascist sympathizers, almost any English person would accept ‘bully’ as a synonym for ‘Fascist’. That is about as near to a definition as this much-abused word has come.”

122 Dr Lizardo  May 10, 2014 5:50:58am

Also from Orwell’s essay on ‘What is Fascism?’, this little gem:

It will be seen that, as used, the word ‘Fascism’ is almost entirely meaningless. In conversation, of course, it is used even more wildly than in print. I have heard it applied to farmers, shopkeepers, Social Credit, corporal punishment, fox-hunting, bull-fighting, the 1922 Committee, the 1941 Committee, Kipling, Gandhi, Chiang Kai-Shek, homosexuality, Priestley’s broadcasts, Youth Hostels, astrology, women, dogs and I do not know what else.

re: #119 Dr Lizardo

Folks in that part of the world do sure love to hurl the word “fascist” around. It reminds me of George Orwell’s essay on the use of the word fascist as an epithet.

orwell.ru

ETA: If you read Orwell’s essay, you’ll see the idea that of “liberal (or left of center) fascism” isn’t anything new, and Jonah Goldberg didn’t come up with it on his own - it’s actually an idea that’s been around for quite awhile.

Praxis in most “communist” countries never fully adhere to Marxist theory at any rate. Also, conservative authoritarianism and the “dictatorship” of the proletariat often converge. And fascism itself eschews any recognition of classes, preferring to engineer all sectors of society to adhere to fascist ideals, from the poorest to the richest. It’s why nationalism, racism, eugenics, etc are always inherent in fascism. But while communism openly touts revolution, fascism is trickier—by promoting fascist ideals to the majority race alone it can, under the guise of “nationalism” achieve its goals of power, even though it will, like communism, eventually fail. Conservative authoritarianism and the “dictatorship” of the proleteriat often converge.

It wouldn’t surprise me if individuals like Putin can easily go from communism (as a KGB agent of the State) to fascism for his own goals as a powerful leader of a vast country, since crossing the point of convergence of fascism/communism often happens. I’ve seen it happen even among former friends who were die-hard commies back in the ’60s era and eventually revolted against what they saw as “excess”. Besides, they eventually had to make a living and saw those politics as “losing”. Some were able to transition back into liberal and progressive politics as times changed, though.

Well, this is good news…the FBI apparently frowns on people pointing loaded weapons at federal officers - including those who work for the Bureau of Land Management. So the Bundy Ranch militia could be seeing an end to some of those Second Amendment rights they so love…

Numerous members of the Metro Police force that were at the scene have confirmed that they’ve spoken with the FBI and that an investigation is definitely underway. It is against federal law to point a firearm at a federal officer.

Yeah…that does suck…

Police officers and BLM agents that were there feel pretty confident that the FBI is going to be able to find clear evidence of several members of Bundy’s posse aiming loaded weapons at them. Considering that local news stations ended up filming and covering a good portion of the standoff means that there is probably ample video coverage of the event. Not to mention surveillance cameras or cell phones that might have gathered footage. It seems like a foregone conclusion that Bundy and many of his armed fanatics will be seeing heavy jail time in the near future.

Update: ‘No Trojan Horse extremism links’ Birmingham teachers hear

Birmingham City Council officials investigating an alleged plot by Muslim hardliners to take control of schools say they have seen no evidence of links to extremism, BBC News has learned.

But they have found “significant grievances” about governance and leadership, some on a large scale.

Mr Rogers warned those present to expect a “firestorm” when the reports were published, and to prepare for “significant structural changes” within the education department as a result of the findings.

Mr Hay said that the council had uncovered nothing which indicated any extremist links at any of the schools but many significant “grievances” related to what he described as “HR issues”, some of which were long-standing and on a large scale.

Meanwhile, in Turkey:

“What you’re saying is wrong,” Erdoᇺn said near the end of the speech by Feyzioğlu, who was speaking on the occasion of the 146th anniversary of the establishment of the Council of State in Ankara.

“What am I saying that is wrong, Mr. Prime Minister?” Feyzioğlu asked in reply, prompting Erdoᇺn to angrily respond: “This kind of rudeness is impossible.”

“I’m not the one who’s being rude, Mr. Prime Minister,” the bar head then said.

Erdoᇺn became incensed over Feyzioğlu’s criticizing of the government’s failure to provide permanent settlement to some survivors of the 2011 Van earthquakes. He stressed that many people were still living in rudimentary conditions in shipping containers.

Rising from his seat to leave, Erdoᇺn interrupted the speech, saying Turkey’s highest lawyer had “no legal right” to say such things. “Unfortunately, because of the law, we give a platform to things like this. You’re making a political speech … Everything you said about Van is a lie,” he said.

Sitting alongside Erdoᇺn, President Abdullah Gül attempted to calm Erdoᇺn down, but to no avail.

There’s a video you can play in the article; it’s all in Turkish, but it looks to me like PM Erdogan doesn’t handle criticism well - oblique or otherwise.

yaknow, I got to wondering the other day about bits and pieces related to this.

Maybe you recall that one of the first comments of a schism over there was when one group, citing intel from a friendly informer in US government ranks, insisted the US was sending a drone. They insisted on leaving.

Now almost all the comments I saw were related to drones used as weapons. But I got to remembering that the primary use of US drones is ISR: Intel, Surveil, and Recon. Really, really good cameras, long loiter times, and difficult to detect.

With that in mind, I’m wondering if there are terabytes of pictures of everyone on the ranch and traffic patterns and all of that.

With that in mind, I’m wondering if the task force to deal with this mess is under high security because there’s a high-level informer who knows when drones are being sent - and there’s a parallel internal investigation to find the mole.

An insurrection is an ugly thing. It needs stopped before it becomes outright rebellion.

Yeah, right.

Sean Hannity’s good friend, Cliven Bundy is, once again, totally full of shit and trying to stir up violence against the BLM.

On June 10, 2009, Federal officials unsealed indictments against 24 people for looting Native American artifacts on public lands. Specific charges included violating the Archaeological Resources Protection Act (ARPA), depredation and theft of government property, theft of Indian tribal property, violating the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA), and transportation of stolen property. That same day Blanding was the site of a related raid, and 16 local people were charged in the case. re: #188 kirkspencer

yaknow, I got to wondering the other day about bits and pieces related to this.

I blame the guy who ran out and said “Hey, y’all, look up there. Isn’t that a Bald Freedom Eagle.”

Has anyone been taking about the protest planned from well before the Bundy confrontations? The understanding I have had about BLM for twenty years is they manage to piss off the locals and not just the citizenry. Local elected officials etc. They do have a ham handed approach too often. And when the Feds have and use control of 90% of the area in question, building resentment is a certainty. And that is the real backdrop for Bundy. BLM is a little less popular with locals and ranchers than the IRS audit people.

There is some minor local tension right here near Los Angeles, as vast swaths of National Forest are still no trespassing zones since the Station fire. The reason given is that even scattered human footprints of picnickers or hikers will disturb the natural recovery. As if limiting access via numbers of visitors was not an option. Or understanding that in these long human inhabited mountain range our impact is strictly a negative. There is a better balance available. Bad tempers, militias and glacial bureaucracies are not a good mix. Unarmed civil protest and disobedience is the respected way to go.

Bundy is an ass, the militias are damn dangerous. But that does not let the heavy handed officials have auto amnesty from poor decisions.

Cliven Bundy II? Utah protesters prepare for new face-off with feds

A band of angry citizens plans to ride all-terrain vehicles onto closed-off, federally managed public land Saturday in protest against the federal Bureau of Land Management, which many say has unfairly closed off a prized area, cheating residents of outdoor recreation.

The ride, organized by San Juan County Commissioner Phil Lyman, is a gambit to assert county sovereignty over Recapture Canyon, known for its archaeological ruins, that BLM officials say has been jeopardized from overuse. The canyon was closed to motor vehicles in 2007, the agency said, after two men forged an illegal seven-mile trail. Hikers and those on horseback are still allowed there.

Lyman and his supporters want the BLM to act more quickly on a years-old request for a public right-of-way through the area. “You can’t just arbitrarily shut down a road in San Juan County,” he said. “If you can do that and get away with it, what else can you do?”

The revolt has received national attention, coming at the heels of Nevada rancher Cliven Bundy’s successful standoff last month against the BLM that suggests a rising battle across the West over states’ rights on federally managed public lands. Tensions rose in Utah this week after two men pointed a gun at a BLM employee on a highway.

The Boko Haram Bidding War

There really is only one answer, deeply unsatisfactory and grossly unsavory as that may be: negotiation with Boko Haram and, almost certainly, the payment of a significant ransom.

Shekau has taken Western hostages before and reportedly reaped major revenue. Last year, his men abducted a French family of seven, four of them children between the ages of 5 and 12, who had gone to visit a national park in Cameroon near the Nigerian border. Although officially no ransom was paid by the French government or the victims’ relatives, several reports claim third parties turned over more than $3 million to win the release of the natural-gas company manager Tanguy Moulin-Fournier and his family.

Global attention and anger about the kidnapping, after a slow start, is now reaching a thunderous crescendo. But as the furor subsides and the thunder dies, most or all of those girls probably will remain captives. The real work of winning their freedom is going to require a great deal of time, patience, understanding, and money.

And here’s the really unsettling thought. Who will bankroll Shekau’s ambition to project himself on the global stage? Very probably the same people who win the freedom of those poor young girls.

Sometimes you lose those rights by being an asshole and breaking the law. Unfair government TYRANNY, I know.

For example,

The BLM closed the canyon to ATVs and dirt bikes seven years ago after motorized-use proponents illegally constructed a 7-mile-long, 4-foot-wide trail through the canyon. The trail — complete with bridges, berms and stiles — cut through archaeological sites.

The Boko Haram Bidding War

Negative: Dane-geld

It is always a temptation to an armed and agile nation
To call upon a neighbour and to say: —
“We invaded you last night—we are quite prepared to fight,
Unless you pay us cash to go away.”

And that is called asking for Dane-geld,
And the people who ask it explain
That you’ve only to pay ‘em the Dane-geld
And then you’ll get rid of the Dane!

It is always a temptation for a rich and lazy nation,
To puff and look important and to say: —
“Though we know we should defeat you, we have not the time to meet you.
We will therefore pay you cash to go away.”

And that is called paying the Dane-geld;
But we’ve proved it again and again,
That if once you have paid him the Dane-geld
You never get rid of the Dane.

It is wrong to put temptation in the path of any nation,
For fear they should succumb and go astray;
So when you are requested to pay up or be molested,
You will find it better policy to say: —

“We never pay any-one Dane-geld,
No matter how trifling the cost;
For the end of that game is oppression and shame,
And the nation that pays it is lost!”

To pay Boko Haram millions to ransom back those girls would just mean more terror attacks and kidnappings later. I know I sound like a man with a heart of stone saying this, but I would sooner leave those girls in the hands of Boko Haram, knowing what their fate will be, than I would pay any ransom.

241 FemNaziBitch  May 10, 2014 9:47:53am
Why is that significant? “Our cortex is already changing the raw visual information before that information gets into our consciousness,” Voytek concluded.

You’re not only seeing what is actually before you; you’re seeing what your brain is telling you is there.

Specifically, the cortex is sending a cascade of predictions about what should be seen at all the different layers of complexity. So what travels back up from the eyes is not raw visuals of the environment, but how the world deviates from what the brain is expecting.

I don’t think it’s a good idea either but it might be the most likely outcome (along with prisoner swaps, etc). The Nigerians really aren’t capable of a series of complicated hostage rescues. They might try but it’s likely to be messy. They are also resistant to outside military help. The French have a couple thousand troops in the region but I’m not sure the Nigerians will accept direct assistance. It’s not ideal to pay the ransoms but it might be the most likely outcome.

I’m looking for the point where human lives are worth more than a hypothetical strategic principle to someone who values those principles.

I’m sure DF would pay the ransom if it was his kid
he might agree to pay if it was your or my kid
he’d lean “no” if it was someone from his state, but he didn’t knows kid
he’s saying “no” because he’s too far removed from whose kid(s) it is

260 BongCrodny  May 10, 2014 10:08:43am

Bad guys get away with shit all the fucking time, from Assad to Putin to Kim Jong-un.

Effectively, the only thing that not paying a ransom says is “we don’t give a shit about those girls.”

Give ‘em the money, then do whatever needs to be done after that.

That’s a sliding scale, varied by whose life, whose money, whose principle, and whose decision.

I grew up overseas and from a very young age discussions of kidnaping and hostage taking were common in my family. Every couple years I had to attend the State Dept terrorism/kidnapping seminar. My mom is still an adventurous traveling in Africa and South America. She has made it very clear that if she’s taken hostage then freed and finds that I’ve paid ransom that she’ll hunt me down and kill me herself. I take the threat semi-seriously but not every family has the same “enlightened” view. Ransom payments happen but that’s why hostage taking is a profitable business.

Would you have paid a million dollars to prevent the Twin Towers from being hit by airplanes?

Probably not, Because the additional strength such funds would have given Al Qaeda would have made them an even worse threat.

Julius Caesar arranged his ransom from pirates. Then he returned and killed them, even though they had become drinking buddies.

Update: Insurgents blow up 2nd bridge, abduct wife, 2 kids

Islamic extremists blew up a bridge, killed an unknown number of people and abducted the wife and two children of a retired police officer in northeast Nigeria, residents said Saturday as an international effort got underway to rescue 276 schoolgirls kidnapped by the militants.

These bullies stole the girls because they could. They knew the Nigerian government didn’t value the girls and they would most likely get away with it.

It’s a total win for them. They can use and the girls for their own pleasure and profit, then sell them when they are tired of them.

They’ll do it again.

re: #243 Dark_Falcon

I’m not proposing we do that. Boko Haram must be combated and destroyed. But paying them to release hostages is the act of a fool, since it gives them a victory and moreover, it gives them the means to further their evil cause.

If the leadership is killed off or captured, what really is the victory? Are you seeing the victory as them being handed the money?

To me, victory is an ultimate ending. If they are killed or decimated, the ultimate end for them is far from a victory. Money is just money. A hard line stance with those uncaring idiots could mean they just wipe out the girls.

Another thing to consider. If you watched some of the videos, have you noticed the guy speaking on the videos is constantly tugging and scratching at himself, moving around all nervous and with a stupid grin on his face? I have a feeling he and the others are just a little bit drugged up on something. His behavior is a bit like a meth user. I think they have some other strange but powerful concoctions in Africa and they may be on those.

The point being, if those idiots get their hands on some major money, they might just go on a binge of some kind and let their guard down and be real easy to take out.

Just something I noticed.

With that attitude, you’re child would probably would have been runaways away before they would have been kidnapped!

Moscow adds destroyer to Mediterranean naval task force

The Navy said the Udaloy-class destroyer Vice Admiral Kulakov was housing the command of the task force, deployed to protect Syria from an attack from the sea.

“The task force’s command was previously based on board the Pyotr Veliky nuclear-powered missile cruiser and the Admiral Levchenko destroyer, which have already fulfilled their objectives as part of the task force,” Russian Navy spokesman Capt. Vadim Serga said.

Broadcaster forced to quit by BBC after accidentally playing a song with the N-word

During his nostalgic Sunday evening music show, Swingers and Stingers, which is broadcast across south west England, Mr Lowe last month played a recording from 82 years ago of The Sun Has Got His Hat On, by Ambrose & His Orchestra.

But what Mr Lowe, 67, did not realise was that the recording contained a line of lyric twice featuring the N-word. That sparked a complaint from a listener offended by the word who said he was “horrified” to hear it on the BBC and hoped “someone in authority” would deal with Mr Lowe.

What if it was your sister, your niece, your daughter? How would you feel then?

For WAY too long women and girls have been used as tools of war via rape and slavery. And yes, it happens to men and boys too, and it’s NEVER acceptable, EVER.

This group of disgusting lowlifes needs to be hunted down and taken out as an example to others who think this is a great idea. Women are not tools and a means to an end. Period. You get the girls back and you follow their fucking kidnappers back to whatever rock they crawl under and you destroy them. Period. Full Stop. End of it. The piece of shit leading this horror needs to be made an example of, along with anyone in the Nigerian government who had the slightest clue about this and let it happen.

Seconded. These monsters need to be taken out. If we—and by “we” I mean any decent people involved in trying to resolve this—aren’t smart enough to figure out a way to defeat them, then we’re screwed.

Our advanced, modern culture starts to seem pretty empty & useless if it doesn’t provide us with the tools to effectively stop a bunch of murderous knuckle-draggers stealing our children.

Bobby Jindal woke up feeling oppressed today.

Yes, because it’s just so difficult being a Christian in America today. Especially in a place like Louisiana, because Jindal is part of a majority that makes up only 90% of the state’s population.

Jindal appears to have chosen his theme for a 2016 campaign. He’s the true Christian warrior, unlike phonies Cruz, Paul, Christie, Ryan, etc, none of whom have his direct line to God. In a religious party like the gop, many base voters don’t really care about politics that much. They want a preacher as much as a pol. Jindal is mimicking the Huckabee old time religion schtick. It’s probably not enough to get the nod, but it will get him some attention, especially if Huck doesn’t run.

Well, this is good news…the FBI apparently frowns on people pointing loaded weapons at federal officers - including those who work for the Bureau of Land Management. So the Bundy Ranch militia could be seeing an end to some of those Second Amendment rights they so love…

Good. These whackaloons can’t just point loaded weapons at the government and brag about how many officers they have in their lines of sight and walk away from it. There are rules for a reason.

Oh wait. I forgot. These are white Christian patriots. The rules don’t apply to them. ///////////////////

It needs to be done as locally as possible. If Nigeria can be strengthened enough that’s the best way. Failing that, help an African multinational force take them on—they cross borders at will anyway.
