Bartholomäus Traubeck created equipment that would translate tree rings into music by playing them on a turntable. Rather than use a needle like a record, sensors gather information about the wood’s color and texture and use an algorithm that translates variations into piano notes. The breadth of variation between individual trees results in a individualized tune. The album, appropriately titled “Years,” features spruce, ash, oak, maple, alder, walnut, and beech trees. It is available to download now, though it will be available to purchase on vinyl in August. The end product of these arbor “records” is haunting and beautiful and you need to check it out.

There was a woman about 20 years ago who used to do regular peace protests at the top of the Art Museum steps in Philly. She would roller skate in front of the museum waving an immense flag. Not my thing, but whatever.
I stopped seeing her after a while. IIRC, found out later her final peace protest was to self-immolate.
The alt weekly I was reading that had reported it described that act as a brave form of protest. Still shaking my head at that bit of stupidity (the suicide and the reporting) all these years later.

Strange weather here in central Ohio yesterday. And it lead to an off-duty fire fighter getting struck by lighting after he was in a charity game before the Columbus Crew MLS soccer game last night. The game was cancelled and rescheduled for today.
About that same time I was sitting in my house and noticed that the latest pop-up storm had seemed to have left the area as the sun was popping back out and the clouds had lifted in my part of town.
Suddenly there was a huge nasty crack and pop of lighting that had to be right outside my home somewhere. It was bone-chilling loud. I thought the power was going to go off as the lights in my home flicked off for a second but stayed on.
Once again, the lesson about lighting can be around no matter what the sky looks like.
Link to story about firefighter.
COLUMBUS, Ohio - An off-duty Columbus Division of Fire lieutenant was hospitalized after being struck by lightning at the Columbus Crew game Saturday.
Just before 8 p.m., Columbus medics were called to Crew Stadium to transport a person who had been struck by lightning to the hospital.
Fire officials say the victim that was struck was an off-duty lieutenant for The Columbus Division of Fire. He was resuscitated and is listed in critical condition at The Ohio State University’s Wexner Medical Center.
According to the Columbus Fire Fighters Union Local 67 on Facebook, the lieutenant was playing in a charity soccer game at Crew Stadium, and after the game, he was struck by lightning in the parking lot.
Officials said the victim was in cardiac arrest at the time of transport.
The Columbus Crew match was postponed due to the incident, and was rescheduled for 2 p.m. Sunday.

My county is in the middle, with only 1% disability, 20% college grads, and 34% obesity. The upper middle-class bedroom communities on the lake offset the real poverty in this county, though, and they’re the ones running it and have clout. Although the median income is $50K, we have 10% unemployment. It’s almost like day and night when you compare neighborhoods of the well off with the poor here.

My original point was partly sarcastic. You seem to be taking it very seriously.
I know full well some people have self-immolated and in the process brought worldwide attention to their cause. They are the exception. Most such protests are generally ineffective and only result in the death of the immolated, and the grief of their loved ones. There have been dozens of such incidents in China to protest the Chinese occupation of Tibet (I will call it that, since it’s basically what Beijing has done). The most recent on Tian’anmen Square prompted the government to put up security checks and bar all liquids from the Square. It did not change policy about Tibet, and it did not bring overwhelming international pressure on Beijing to change its Tibetan policy.

I don’t detect sarcasm in “As a protest, it’s self-defeating. A person that passionate for a cause would be more effective alive than dead.”. Had you said that the probability of such a form of protest failing outweighs the probability of it sparking something big, I would have agreed. As such, the statement is false, since the “exceptions” to it are not minor or insignificant enough not to mention them.

There’s a reasonably strong correlation between people who don’t believe in evolution and people who believe in dousing, but it’s only a strong, not an absolute one, so I’m curious. In both cases, it’s rejection of science on a pretty fundamental level.

Other than the house and the septic field, I have eight acres of land on which to place a well. Of course you want the well close to the house and far enough away from your septic field, (don’t wanna recycle that water too soon) I have a pretty large area in which to place a well. Since you pay for the well by the length of it, I really don’t mind the well driller and his 80 year old father, who does this every day of his life, to dowse for it. How the eff would I know? And for those who grew up in New Jersey / Southern New York back in the 1980’s / early 1990’s, I’ve got this story:
A New Jersey amusement park that was as famous for the many lawsuits brought against it as it was for its rides, with no fewer than six people losing their lives there and 110 people reported injuries in a single year.
Since it closed in 1996, Action Park became the stuff of urban legend and nostalgia, even inspiring a documentary called ‘The Most Insane Amusement Park Ever.’
And as of June 14, Action Park is back, complete with a new attraction, the Zero G, which drops riders through a trapdoor and down a 100-foot-high slide, which Action Park’s owners says is the tallest of its kind.
SNIP
Action Park closed in 1996 and reopened two years later as Mountain Creek. Owners decided to switch back to the original name in an attempt to capitalize on the nostalgia - some might say notoriety - of its earlier heyday.
Weirdness and nostalgia, these things abide.

Ha. Local NBC politics show (The Spectrum) just announced Columbus is strongly in the running for the Democratic National Convention.
They are also reporting that Cleveland is one of two cities still in the running for the GOP convention. Dallas the other.
So, one of the talking heads just stated that if Cleveland is chosen for the GOP that would assure Columbus for the Dems.
BATTLEGROUND OHIO!
They also showed a clip of Big Bill Clinton saying “I love Ohio and Columbus” and they said the Clintons are big on Columbus getting the convention.
I figure Dallas will get the Republicans. They won’t want to go to Cleveland. Too economically depressed, a former great union city, strongly Democratic and all that may cause some pretty big protests.
But it is all good for the city of Columbus and for Ohio. I think the people that would make it here for a Democratic National Convention would be pleasantly surprised by the city and the political power that lies here out of sight of national eyes. We are a huge government city if you look into it all.
Go Columbus. Woot!

ISIS Crucifies 8 Rebel Fighters, According To Human Rights Group
ISIL had executed the eight men in Aleppo province for belonging to more moderate groups. The men were crucified in the town square of Deir Hafer in eastern Aleppo and would be left there for three days, it said.
The men were accused of being “Sahwa” fighters, the Observatory said, a term ISIL uses to refer to rival combatants whom it accuses of being controlled by Western powers.
ISIL also crucified another man in the province in al-Bab town near the Turkish border, it said. He was pinned up for eight hours as a punishment for giving false testimony but survived the ordeal, the Observatory said.

Man is nailed to a cross by ISIS fighters - and survives
A man has survived being crucified after a Jihadist group nailed him and eight other men to a cross in the main square of his village in Syria.
Members of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) raided the village of Al-Bab, near the border with Turkey, and attempted to crucify the man as punishment for rebelling against President Bashar al-Assad and jihadist groups, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.
The unnamed man managed to survive the eight-hour ordeal but eight other men from Deir Hafer in the east of Aleppo province, who were given the same punishment, died.

The “same strategy”??
Doesn’t ISIS control a large chunk of Syria (as well as Iraq) at the border there??
Doesn’t appear that the strategy is a big success!
Depends on how you look at it. In some ways Assad needs ISIS to stay in power. If it wasn’t for ISIS Assad could easily have been overthrown through international intervention years ago but the fear of ISIS taking over Syria has prevented that. As long as Assad keeps ISIS powerful enough to take over the country, the rest of the world has an interest in leaving Assad in place. Maliki could do the same thing, Keeping ISIS as a manageable threat is a great insurance policy.

IDF Handing Out Ramadan Lollipops with Anti-Hamas Wrappers: Palestinians
Palestinian residents of Nablus and Ramallah noticed on Sunday morning that hundreds of lollipops had been dropped in the streets and alleyways of the city, decorated with the phrase “Ramadan Kareem … Some sweets, after Hamas has made life in the West Bank bitter.”
Witnesses in Nablus told Ma’an that they saw Israeli soldiers throwing the lollipops in the streets. But an Israel Defense Forces officer told Haaretz he knew nothing about the issue.
On Thursday, matchboxes were available in the West Bank with the slogan “Warning, Hamas is setting the West Bank alight.” Photos taken by Palestinians show that the matchboxes list the name of a manufacturer, Swedish company Swedish Match, and an importer, Nur Ltd.

Ryabkov also reiterated Moscow’s position that the crises in Syria and Iraq must be resolved “through a genuine national dialogue”.
Asked about Washington’s decision to support moderate rebels in Syria, Ryabkov said: “There can be no alternative to a political solution.” He added: “We reject this US policy. It is in everybody’s interest, including the Americans, to act responsibly on Syria.”

How do you get your own Starfighter?
Buy a piece of land and a chair. Take the chair to the land and sit on it. Soon enough, you’ll have your Starfighter.
The problems with the F-104 is that it was used in the wrong role. It was meant for high altitude bomber interception. It was used for close air support or air superiority.
