Let’s just call this lawsuit what it is: A fundraising stunt. It’s not about getting the mandate implemented, because they hate it with a passion. And it’s not about the constitutionality of the President’s actions, because we’ve already seen with Bush that such matters are a minor concern when a Republican is in office. No, it’s about a party that’s so desperate for a return to power that it will engage in all sorts of childish stunts to wring a little more money out of the faithful.

If the crisis on our border were happening to another, poorer nation, we’d be one of the first in line to browbeat them into accepting these refugees. We might pledge money or assistance, but we’d still insist that they overlook their own immigration laws to allow these refugees to receive care.

But we’re America, so obviously we’re not obligated to do anything but toss these people back into the meat grinder. Hell, we’ll even put presidential candidates on TV arguing that it’s the “humanitarian” thing to do, because they’re not refugees when they wash up on our shores, they’re “illegal immigrants” who must be deported…unless they’re Cuban, then they’re welcome, so long as they vote Republican.

This is one of the most annoying examples of the cognitive dissonance in GOP rhetoric. They say they want to run the government like a business, but then they say they hate the government and want to shrink it down to nothing, deliberately limiting revenues.

No sane businessman seeks to shrink their company’s revenues.

re: #100 De Kolta Chair

This isn’t one of those human shield actions ala the run-up to the 2003 Iraq invasion is it? If so, been there/done that/made no difference.

Yeah, there were a few bus loads of Western Human shield volunteers for Saddam. There was a really cool documentary about them. But in this case it seems to be working. There’s somebody or something in that hospital that the Israelis are interested in. Up to 5 roof knocks so far and the human shields are staying put, the Israelis still haven’t destroyed the building. That’s why Hamas and others use the tactic, sometimes it works. Even if it doesn’t work and the volunteer shields get killed it’s still a victory for the cause by increasing the death toll and getting some more western press coverage.

It’s not that people are going to leave. They still read the articles, but they don’t actively participate. Less participation makes the blog less interesting which, in the long run, hurts LGF and Charles.

Me, I mostly limit my participation to Pages when it gets to be too much. Less agita there (most of the time).

Had a good time diving, but since my big broad-brimmed sun hat was locked in the car, my face is kind of feeling ‘warm’ this evening. I think it’s going to be very uncomfortable when I go in and take my shower. Had a great time, worked hard with the instructor trying to improve my general form and technique. I hate the term, but in this case I am going to have to co-op a tea-party /rwnj term. If the Tea Party and their ilk gain power it truly will become a “Feral Government” and their prey will be the weak, the poor, the sick and the vulnerable among us.

Recent SCOTUS decisions (Citizens United and Hobby Lobby, to name two) will pave the way.

Schuylkill River dam (Waterworks)

I like the goose standing on the top of the dam (I assume upon a barely submerged piece of wood.) There is also a group of cormorants over to the right.

So happy together

I can’t see me lovin’ nobody but you for all my life
When you’re with me, baby, the skies will be blue for all my life

Me and you and you and me
No matter how they tossed the dice
It had to be
The only one for me is you
And you for me
So happy together

Boko Haram mocks plea to free 200 Nigerian schoolgirls and pledges support for Iraqi jihadists in new video

The video served as a direct snub to Malala Yousafzai, the Pakistani schoolgirl and women’s rights campaigner who arrived in Nigerian capital, Abuja, over the weekend to voice support for the #BringBackOurGirls campaign.

In briefings with The Daily Telegraph over the weekend, Western diplomats said that, despite international publicity, the efforts to find the hostages were little further on than they were in May, when Britain, America and France began to help. With neither a prisoner swap or a rescue considered likely, there was little real prospect of any “breakthrough” in the foreseeable future, they said.

So he’s sitting in Russia and waxing on about surveillance and civil liberties in countries that have a much better human rights and surveillance record than Russia.

And not a peep about Russia. From Snowden or Greenwald or any of their acolytes.

Right.

That’s what irritates me the most. OK, I understand why Eddie himself doesn’t do it. Granted, it wouldn’t be the best idea for him to criticize Russia while begging to stay there. But surely this task could be overtaken by GG and the rest? Those that don’t risk being refused an asylum. They would have to do it if only to show that they don’t have double standards. But they just won’t do it.

It’s just like with Assange - he had promised to publish some explosive info on Russian corruption and then… didn’t.

Maybe GG doesn’t want to burn his meal ticket? If he starts going off about Russian surveillance and civil liberties, Snowden may be moved into “protective custody” for the next 40 years or so. Even if Snowden has given up his cache of documents and has no further value to GG, it’d be bad optics for the brave whistleblower, living in exile from his homeland, to be disappeared by his host country.

Snowden may not realize the jam he’s in. He could die of “mysterious causes” in Russia and NOT ONE of his followers would believe any explanation other than “The NSA got him!”
