Saturday Acoustic: Michael Chapdelaine - the Harp of the Warrior (El Arpa Del Guerrero)

A classical piece on a steel string guitar

This one’s a bit different from most of the acoustic guitar videos I’ve been posting — a pure modern classical guitar piece by Cuban composer Leo Brouwer, beautifully performed by Michael Chapdelaine on a steel string guitar instead of a traditional gut string classical guitar.

“Harp of the Warrior”

This tune is from a suite of three pieces called the Black Decamaron, written by Cuban composer, Leo Brouwer.

It is an image of the classic mythological, aristocratic warrior, who is at once, a statesman, a lover and a father, a killer and an artist. We hear him here showing all those characteristics as he desperately plays his harp (that might be thought of, metaphorically, as his sword). We hear violence, and enlightenment, as well as a dynamic and wide range of feelings and vision of what life is to him. The first thing you may notice is that it is in an odd meter, 5/8. It gives the piece an incredible, somewhat asymmetrical smoothness (perpetual motion if you will), by which I’ve always been blown away. And it alternates between arpeggio which is there to give us tension, motion, and intensity, even violence, alternating with the same arpeggio, except with a very beautiful and sweet melody on top, showing the kind and loving side of this warrior. These arpeggio sections alternate with chordal sections where a somber, melancholic melody sings on top of the restless harmonies in the bottom. This represents regret and possible shame of the dirty work, making war and taking life, which our warrior has to do when he’s not being his peaceful and loving other selves.

New feature when you upload images - the image is now automatically scaled to three sizes — the original size you upload, and two thumbnail-sized images, one at 240 pixels width and one at 125 pixels.

I’ve been meaning to do this for a while, to make it easier to include images at different sizes.

Sounds very helpful—only recently learned to stop tripping over size limits or something that turned photos into big text strings.

It might be looping on a file too big rather than giving me the error.

This doesn’t change the size limit - the image still has be 500K or less. It just automatically creates two thumbnail sizes from the original image.

Is there a list on the site of Charles’ acoustic guitar videos? I’ve heard more than a few that really knocked me out but, by the time I get around to ordering music I forget what the hell they were.

Do you have plans for the thumbnails? Like maybe where the small one ends up in a quote or something like that? Maybe some kind of a public image gallery where clicking on a small thumb opens the largest?

Just wondering.

There are tags under the post at the top. Click the one that says, ‘acoustic guitar’. It’s not a list, but it’s all the posts with that tag.

Sweet!—no more having to fake it by resizing images using the width or height attributes in the code.

And this will be used to maximum effect by haters & bigoted scare mongers to cast suspicion on all Muslims. Because—hey, who knows?—it could be anyone of us. That’s not Islamophobia or bigotry, it’s prudence based on real events. Just like profiling black people and/or feeling suspicious/afraid of them because ZOMG there are sooooo many black people in prison, therefore a large percentage of them must be criminals (or at a minimum criminally inclined, even if they haven’t actually done anything illegal—yet.)

Yeah, they focused mainly on how ISIS uses “social media” to recruit, saying for instance those 3 teenage girls in CO must have had some kind of “connection” with “Islamist radicals” online, although it could have been just a matter of too much money available to them and too little parental supervision or knowledge of what they were up to. Where do 15, 16 and 17 yr olds get thousands of $$ to travel as they were doing? Charging it to their credit cards? How were minors even allowed to board an intl flight?

re: #22 Justanotherhuman

One of the girls stole 2K that daddy just had lying around the house. They all had passports. One of the girls’ fathers(two of the girls are sisters) noticed her passport was gone and that’s how both sets of parents figured out something was amiss. Not sure how they got around minors travelling alone without parental consent, but they managed it.

If that was my kid, they’d be on such lockdown they wouldn’t know what hit them. I mean removing the bedroom door lock(hell, maybe even the door), taking away all technology, escorting them into school, no car, not jack shit.

Yeah, I was in a “Halloween” store (everything Halloween) and every woman’s costume there was either very scanty or “sexed up” in some way. Men had a much wider variety of choices, and not a Chippendale dancer’s g-string in sight. Lots and lots of what appears to be hot this year, too—zombies.

The best costumes are made out of cardboard boxes. One year I was a refrigerator, another year I was a pay phone. A pay phone would be even better now. Kids would have no idea.

It’s getting to be almost a fetish party instead of a proper holiday. Can we save the sexy negligee for Valentine’s Day? At least that one makes more sense to be dressed for sex.

My costumes were always homemade. I was a ghost (white sheet with eyes), bum (w/dad’s old shirt and Fedora), clown, and so forth. We mostly just used our imagination,, face paint, wigs, etc. If a mask was used, it was generally only across the eyes, Lone Ranger-style. But we could be mischievous, too, using soap and candles to leave messages on windows, esp large business ones. : )

I dressed as a man once and went to work at Carl’s Jr. The district manager asked my boss why I was in front on the windows, fries, and drinks instead of in the back flipping burgers* with the rest of the guys.

*They didn’t actually flip them at Carl’s because they were on a conveyor belt-type grill. Yes, the jobs were divided by sex.

Perhaps I’m the last one on the planet to discover this, but if you have a third party SSD and install OSX Yosemite, do not enable trim on your drive.

If you do, you won’t be able to boot into OSX, and a long re-install will be in your immediate future.

When I was five (in the 60’s) my mom made a “Nauga” costume for me——but no one could tell what I was since she made it out of floppy, shapeless fabric instead of vinyl. It was trying at that age to have to explain that I was the mythical creature that “Naugahyde” vinyl came from. (A further difficulty was that the costume was a true one-piece including the head and face covering; there was no opening for the mouth so at the school Halloween party I had to slip small treats through the eye opening.)

But a lone wolf right-wing anti-gubmt cop-killer — like those Vegas people who’d just left the Bundy Ranch, or the Pennsylvania guy we’re looking even as we speak — they’re just lone wolves. They hold singular, individual responsibility for their actions. They have no connection to anybody else who believes the same as they do, or talks about it on the radio or on-line, and how fucking DARE you suggest that any responsibility should be shared with anybody else whatsoever.
