Normally I don’t favor such actions, but the KKK has always used its anonymity as a terror weapon, its members wearing hoods during meetings or when carrying out acts of terror, both to prevent victims from IDing their attackers and to make others afraid to act (for non-members could never be sure that the co-worker they often spoke to wasn’t actually a Klansman).

Given the KKK’s history of using anonymity as a weapon, its members are in my mind fair targets for doxing. Removing Klansmen’s ability to hide behind their masks takes away a key element of their power.

These are the reactionary lumpenproletariat, for the most part. They don’t know how to really make themselves better people, so they have to think they’re “superior” because they’re “white” and must have someone to dump on who they think is “below” them by dint of skin color, among other attributes.

Remember how the GOP congress was on a rabid witch hunt for Clinton’s entire presidency, especially his second term. Filegate turned into travel gate turned into whitewater turned into Monica-gate, even though the Oval Office blowjobs had nothing to do with the original investigations, which were already hollow poltically motivated hatchet work.

Now imagine Clinton was a black guy with a Muslim father. Intensity of hatred now goes to 11.

And now the GOP congress is run by people even more execrable and extreme than Newt Gingrich.

28 Shiplord Kirel  Nov 15, 2014 3:19:12pm

It’s been my view that the Klan (actually an ever changing managerie of small groups) is basically a mob of under-class losers who have been duped into serving as a lightning rod for the serious, powerful elements who are the real drivers of racism in this country. It was certainly like that in the deep south during the Civil Rights movement, when Klan bombers and goofballs were vilified by the self same “respectable” citizens who were the real beneficiaries and guardians of institutionalized racism.
It may be the same in Ferguson, focus on the obnoxious inbreds while politicians, police, and the tea party collude to derail the search for justice.

Bullshit. Whitewater was an empty vessel, a never ending reactionary dog whistle for “screw Clinton any way we can.” Starr was on a mission to destroy Clinton one way or another. 103 freetoken  Nov 15, 2014 4:47:57pm

I remember way, waaaayyy, back, when Glen Beck was the hot new thing at Fox and he had jumped on the “tea party” bandwagon… and I linked to a midwestern (Indiana) “tea party” gathering (with video) in a bar/restaurant… which was filled with brown shirts which more than a little bit fit the stereotype of wanna-be nazis and klansmen. I’m not sure if anyone around here remembers that or not, but there were some protestations by a few that I had over-reached.

Around that time I had switched my avatar to the Obama one, because I thought the winds blowing at that time were pretty clearly racist. I think many other people knew that in 2007/2008 also, but there were hold-outs who refused to accept that a portion, perhaps a large portion, of the strong negative reaction to P.B.O. was racist in origins.

While I am critical of President Obama in his presidency, I felt and still feel that the bigger issue is the still-surviving social dynamic left over from the days of slavery and the War of the Rebellion, and in that regard what President Obama has been able to be is a mirror into the American soul.

The best we can hope for in Ferguson, MO is the feds conclude their investigation by determining that Michael Brown’s civil rights were violated when he was murdered by Darren Wilson. The yokel local white trash police and prosecutors aren’t going to do a damn thing.

Watch, by December Darren Wilson will be back on active duty.

I’m still digesting the last election, and the unwillingness of my fellow Americans to do their duty.

In some ways the phrase ascribed to Churchill about democracy is just wrong. On a national level I’m not sure how many literal democracies exist in this world, but I’m pretty sure that if the demos don’t participate in making the decisions then you really don’t have a democracy.

What we do have is a sort of poll-driven good ol’ boys club, where enough people participate to keep the engines going but not enough to really change anything.

Writing (as we know it) was only invented about 6000 years ago (a coincidence with the beliefs of creationism that is not unrelated) and so “history” can’t really reach way back in time, but from what little I’ve read of past societies it seems like most above-the-village civilization was based on military-enforced hierarchies, run by (1) a monarch, or (2) an oligarchy, or (3) a bureaucracy tended by more powerful families.

Does the US exist more as a type of #3 above?

I can’t understand the mindset of those who only vote when there’s an “interesting” candidate or only when the election is an “important” one. I know people who only vote when there is a Presidential election, yet I cannot convince them to vote at any other time. The have also never been able to explain to me in a way that I can understand why their occasional voting makes sense.

re: #217 freetoken

Maybe we’ve become too big and unwieldy to govern properly.

And frankly, I’ve found that although people will rant and rave against the “government”, not enough actually participate in even voting. Not to mention that for the average person, who is worked hard and never paid quite enough along with family and other responsibilities, there is little time to actually participate in most other civic activities. To actually even run for dog catcher, you must have “connections”, and most people don’t. Politics really is a kind of exclusive “club” and you must meet that club’s criteria, whatever they say it is.

re: #223 Justanotherhuman

There is such a disconnect with what people say and what they do (or in this case, don’t do.)

Perhaps our society is too complex for many people.

In this last election I had to make choices on:

1) not one but two different school boards;
2) water board;
3) numerous candidates at 4 different levels of the judiciary;
4) mayor and other city officials, including numerous council members;
5) something to do with insurance;
6) state assembly;
7) state senate;
8) governor;
9) deputy governor and some other state level offices;
10) state level constitutional provisions;
11) local ordinance choice;
12) and of course US congress.

Perhaps that is too much for some people. Perhaps life is too complex for them to make these decisions.

But if that is so, then are we not back to what really is a democracy? If the demos are unable to make choices, should we let them? Are we to infer the literacy or other tests for voting have validity? And if we go there, where are we to stop?

Umm….

Methanethiol /ˈmɛ㮎ɪnˈ㮊ɪɒl/ (also known as methyl mercaptan) is an organic compound with the chemical formula CH3SH (also written as CH4S). It is a colorless gas with a distinctive putrid smell. It is a natural substance found in the blood and brain of humans and other animals as well as plant tissues. It is disposed of through animal feces. It occurs naturally in certain foods, such as some nuts and cheese. It is also one of the main chemicals responsible for bad breath and the smell of flatus.

Darren Wilson became a cop in north St. Louis County so he could exert power over the n’clangs that populate that area. The moment his gun was unholstered he thought to himself “Now’s my chance to shoot a n’clang and get away with it!”

re: #262 teleskiguy

This is wild speculation, but fuck it.

Darren Wilson became a cop in north St. Louis County so he could exert power over the n’clangs that populate that area. The moment his gun was unholstered he thought to himself “Now’s my chance to shoot a n’clang and get away with it!”

I wouldn’t be surprised if we find out in the coming months that Darren Wilson is a really bad actor.

Not wild. I bet you 10K that I don’t have, that his social media was damning, But the cops, being cops LIVE to tow the blue line. Regardless of morals, regardless of doing the right thing.

They gave him time to become invisible. With pay, with a lawyer.

265 teleskiguy  Nov 15, 2014 8:18:56pm

Darren Wilson probably sleeps like a fucking baby despite the fact he himself took the life of an unarmed teenager. He might even be proud of what he’s done.

Bet you anything Darren Wilson is an unapologetic racist.

All I know is I’m tired of the idea that because you commit some sort of crime whether it was the cigar theft in Brown’s case or casual marijuana use in Martin’s case that it means you’re a “thug” that deserves what you have coming. Of course, it’s all race related whether people want to admit it or not. Let me tell you why I’m so sensitive to the attacks on Michael Brown for being an amateur rapper, a kid who committed petty crimes, etc. Because I knew a kid like that growing up. And that kid is now a man working his ass off to be a good father, husband, and to find a good job. That kid is my own brother.

We unfortunately have people in our society that can never see the police as being in the wrong no matter what. They believe “just listen to the officer” and it will all be fine. Not everyone who believes this is a terrible person IMO but they are blinded by the fact of never having to deal with police harassment just because of their race.

I honestly don’t know but I tell you this much. I’ve always had a healthy skepticism of the police. I’m an old hippie’s kid after all but I always had at least basic respect. Now, I don’t know whether to trust the police or not. I suspect Ferguson, SD, and others are far from being outliers. There’s probably a lot that doesn’t get reported.

We had some good ones and some meh ones. But, they had little money and no media exposure to speak of. Most of them worked their asses off, going all over the state to town halls, rallies etc. The Republicans pretty much ignored them and bought tons of media. A Massachusetts police detective, with a history of assault complaints filed against him, is being investigated after video showed the officer attacking a suspect as he was being booked at police headquarters.

According to a report by WPRI, Detective Robert Kramer has used excessive force in multiple incidents dating back to 2007 that led to dropped charges more than once, and a lawsuit settlement payout in another case…
An investigation by WPRI turned up multiple allegations against Kramer for using excessive force…

Another complainant, Ulises Saldana, stated Kramer threw him “to the ground and repeatedly kicked him.” Saldana was arrested for resisting arrest and is in the process of suing, according to his attorney Joseph Krowski, Jr., who said he was granted a motion to get Kramer’s personnel file.

“There are several complaints in the file,” Krowski said.

According to a statement made in court during a hearing for the O’Brien case, the city of Taunton paid a $65,000 claim for injuries suffered by Celinda Kaye following a 2007 incident…

And what does the chief say?

Taunton Police Chief Edward James Walsh called Kramer “a decorated and pro-active police officer,”

Yeah I don’t fault him much either. Great point about the moment where he said that about Treyvon. I think that one angered them because he really was speaking as an African American father with that statement and for every African American that has been thought to be “up to no good” simply because of his skin color. It was a very personal moment for Obama when he said that.

If you haven’t read it, well, what else ya got to do?

311 HappyWarrior  Nov 15, 2014 9:10:35pm

What’s sad to say though is we have a lot of racism unresolved in this country. There’s a reason why Republican candidates do say and get away with saying that minority voters vote Democratic because of “free stuff.” There’s a reason why “journalists” like Hoft can bring up a young man like Michael Brown being an amateur rapper as proof that he was “no good” or use both him and Treyvon Martin having marijuana in their system as “proof” that they were aggressive even though marijuana does the total opposite. A reason why Rush Limbaugh can call the First Lady of the United States uppity with no criticism from the Republican Party. In my own state, I recall when I was of grade school age, on MLK’s birthday, we celebrated Lee-jackson-King day. Yep on the day that we celebrated the man who did arguably more than any other American to progress the dialogue on race, we also celebrated Stonewall Jackson and Robert E. Lee. And the CSA flag is still a popular symbol in many parts of this country even though the war has been over 149 years.

The creator of that chart says the WSJ is left of center, that Ace of Spades is more reasonable than not, and that the most reasonable/restrained site listed is American Conservative.

It’s something of a rorschach test, actually, telling more about the person who placed the positions than about the organizations being placed. In this case I can tell he leans rather heavily conservative. (WSJ left? Really?)

These are his supposed criteria:

Factors on the “Reasonable/Restrained - Insane/Bombastic” spectrum include:

What they cover: Covering trivial/overcovered matters makes you negative and covering important things pushes you towards positive.
Clickbait and listacles = negative.
Level-headedness of tone = positive.
Attack-style pieces = negative.
Factors on the “Left - Right” spectrum include studies of trust and bias, as well as self-description and consensus among those who suggest placement on the chart to me. You can pinpoint the “left-rightness” of an outfit by looking at where the first letter is, not the middle or last letter.

mitrailleuse.net

And he uses a Pew poll on trust, but that makes no sense either, because the Pew poll shows some of these with sample sizes too small to measure and those with substantial numbers swing widely on trust depending on whether people are liberal or conservative.

Overall, I’d say the entire chart is a heap o’ crap. (But that’s just my unbiased opinion.)

I may avoid driving into Nashville Monday morning. Since I moved here I’ve met the nicest bunch of people I ever lived around. Unfortunately I’ve never driven around so many crazy drivers either.

Not so much crazy (i’ve had the displeasure of driving through/from Atlanta during afternoon rush to get back here to Nashville once, Atlanta drivers are fucking insane), just oblivious, inattentive, and self-absorbed, on top of generally being inexperienced in winter driving.

We’re talking about people who, when the weather folks call for a dusting, make a run on the grocery stores for bread, eggs, and toilet paper, yet can’t be arsed to actually slow down and drive more carefully when we do get snow and ice.

Believe me, I’ve lived here my entire life, I know…

Last year was my first winter here. We just had a few snow dustings but black ice is a problem every year here. We didn’t get much black ice in Virginia, it was usually snow and lots of it. Many people around here don’t seem to understand how dangerous ice is. They fly down the highway like its dry pavement and it scares me. I used to drive in the NJ/NY/Ct area and never saw crazy driving like I see here.

Nigeria: Internet Revolution Can Destroy Scholarship, Says Soyinka

Foremost Nigerian writer and Nobel Laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka warned yesterday in Awka that if reasonable steps were not taken, the current internet revolution would destroy scholarship.

Delivering the 3rd Zik annual lecture at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Soyinka said the heavy reliance on internet for academic activities would soon witness the end of books as instrument for mind development and potential building.

According to him, there has been so much decline in writing and reading among the younger generation and urged them not to allow any primordial considerations to hinder them from developing their innate potentials.

Harper spokesman Jason MacDonald told Canadian reporters Harper had been chatting with a handful of other leaders when Putin entered the room.

Putin approached Harper and stuck out his hand to shake the Canadian prime minister’s, said MacDonald.

After months of public condemnation of Russia’s annexation of Crimea and its military support for separatist rebels in Ukraine, Harper accepted the handshake with a blunt message.

The prime minister said: “Well, I guess I’ll shake your hand, but I only have one thing to say to you: you need to get out of Ukraine,” recounted MacDonald.

It’s always something. Some Tweets are creative. Some Pinterest boards are creative. Some blogs and web sites exhibit an astonishing amount of scholarship. Amazon has given authors a no-cost means to put their books in front of a huge audience. People find new ways to be creative and scholarly. Just because we’re all not sitting around writing Moby Dick in longhand or publishing a two volume hardbound set of books detailing the origin of the fork doesn’t mean that writing, creativity or scholarship are dying.

Guy in “Premium Select” across from me on the flight home from Puerto Vallarta last night (that’s the extra leg-room economy seating but you also get free food and drinks for the extra $69) was going to get his money’s worth…he had the sandwich, he had the cookies, he ordered some pringles, and he ordered six bottles of Jack Daniels that I counted, and quite possibly two more when I wasn’t aware of the constant service he demanded from the flight crew.

Well, those last two bottles of JD were just a wee bit too much for him and he passed out cold 10 minutes before landing. Tray table down, movie still playing on his tablet in front of him. Flight attendant tried shaking him awake to no avail. Finally she just brought his seat back to an upright position, stuck his tablet, his passport and his customs documents on his lap, took his trash away and closed his tray table (didn’t even pause the movie).

To his credit, the wheels touching down woke him up (as his passport, docs, and mobile devices all flew off his lap and under the seats in front of him). How he managed to stay vertical through customs is still something I can’t quite figure out.

‘I’m gonna lock your ass up’: Footage emerges of Ferguson cop who killed Michael Brown arresting a man in 2013 for recording him on his phone

Footage has emerged of Darren Wilson - the police officer who killed Michael Brown - threatening to arrest a man for filming him.

The video shows Wilson approaching a resident in Ferguson, Missouri, and demanding that he put away his camera.

It comes as a grand jury deliberates whether or not to indict Wilson for killing Brown in August, which sparked months of protest and accusations of racism.

The arrest was filmed in 2013, but was only posted online this week. It shows Wilson telling Mike Arman, a 30-year-old Ferguson resident, to put away his phone or be arrested.

Wilson, thinking he is being photographed rather than filmed, said: ‘If you wanna take a picture of me one more time, I’m gonna lock your ass up.’

And Wilson did arrest Arman (though the charges were dismissed), thereby making him yet another cop who got irrationally pissed off when someone tried to record him at work.

Sailors under orders traveled in Dress Blues those days and there I was; young, fit and looking nautical as hell, in my seat on the Braniff 737. Wheels-up and the stewardess asks if I want something to drink. It’s 7 AM and I’m representing sailors everywhere so: “Scotch rocks.” She hands me the cup of ice and the little bottle, I reach for my wallet. “No charge for the Navy,” she says. Then the seatbelt sign comes on and it’s gear down for San Antonio, a brief stop then up we go and she hands me another scotch rocks kit without even asking. Same routine as we stop at Midlands-Odessa, Albuquerque, Tucson, and Vegas. Mom, Dad and Sis were on hand at LAX to welcome their drunken sailor.

Husband and wife share live-in lover, with surprising results

Husband Erik Fridland, 35, fell madly in love with fellow taxi driver Hampus Engstrom, 29, when the pair were both working in the town of Stroemsund.

However, when Erik decided to confess all to wife Linda,34, she insisted that she wanted to meet the man who had stolen her husband’s heart.

After an initial encounter with Linda, Hampus then realised that he also had feelings for her, with Linda later admitting that she felt the same.

It was then, quite literally, a case of three in the bed, with Hampus deciding to move in with the couple, alongside his five-year-old daughter and the couple’s nine-year-old twin boys and 13-year-old son.

[…]

Hampus said: ‘We work together and we live together. I sleep in the same bed as Linda and Erik. We all have sex together’.

I’m thinking of Heinlein’s The Moon is a Harsh Mistress.

In it the moon was used as a penal colony and farm. Due to the fact that most convicts are men the ratio of men to women was about two to one.

Which lead to the most common form of marriage being a troika; wife, senior husband and junior husband; listed in order of power. There were other forms of marriage as well. The narrator was in a line marriage. When a person left, most often by dying, they married another person into younger end of the group.

It was the last decent book he wrote in my opinion.

I don’t think the reality on the ground in Texas is as bad as the politics. look at how these numbers were put together.

Texas’ totals are high, Pegula said, “because it’s a very large state.” Texas, California, Florida and New York have some of the largest labor forces in the U.S.

Seeking a way to account for that, we took each state’s 2011 raw numbers of deaths in the four categories Marston tabbed, added them together, then divided by the average number of workers employed in the state in 2011 per the federal bureau.

Texas ranked 18th, with a rate of 1.7 such deaths per 100,000 workers. Observing that the five states with the “worst” rates all employed fewer than 1 million people in 2011, we checked to see how Texas fared among states employing more than 1 million. The answer: 10th place.

“Worst” among all 50 states were Montana (3.4 deaths per 100,000 workers), North Dakota (3.3), West Virginia (3), Alaska (3) and New Mexico (2.8). “Worst” among states with more than 1 million employed were Arkansas (2.6), Louisiana (2.3), Kansas (2.3), Missouri (2.1) and Kentucky (2).

Conservatives hate that word more than the N-word.

Not a hard standard to meet since they don’t have a problem at all with the N-word.

re: #416 Higgs Boson’s Mate

And even in very highly regulated California our accident rates are too high. We have had refineries blow up, gas pipes erupt in residential areas. High rise construction is dangerous. Where you see a building boom, you see more accidents including rates. Have a construction slump and somebody gets to brag about reduced construction deaths.

Thanks for the better take on accident rates. I worked in manufacturing long enough to know that there’s no such thing as accident free. That said, we could do a lot better.

Actually, you didn’t quite get to a useful accident rates discussion. The significant rate is measured in labor hours, not laborers, usually separates out agricultural, industrial, and clerical etc via labor identification codes. That’s why W Va scores so badly—dangerous work in a poorly-regulated state.

423 Decatur Deb  Nov 16, 2014 9:18:15am

The best semi-technical discussion of accident stats is in this National Safety Council annual pub. Note: This one is a .pdf.

(.pdf isn’t showing—just a large blank.)

I agree completely, and I say that as the guy that runs compliance and safety at a shop with regulated processes. Smelting and real acid based purification of precious metals. If there was deliberate violations and cover ups, i could (in theory) go to jail. I sign my name and give my home address on the forms.

Bullshit. Whitewater was an empty vessel, a never ending reactionary dog whistle for “screw Clinton any way we can.” Starr was on a mission to destroy Clinton one way or another. Your revisionist history, thankfully, is still only shared by a small number of Clinton hating dead enders. See Clinton, Bill…by far the most popular living former president.

You mean it was Ronny Reagan?

Great for Sunday football watching, indoors that is, and sipping warm homemade Wassail spiked with brandy. Also getting to spend the day in snuggly soft fleece jammies and fuzzy socks.

I think you need by industry statistics per state. For example, I would wager that most of West Virginia’s fatalities are from coal mines, not from industrial plants going boom.

I’ve got 50° and 93% humidity just east of downtown Austin. It’s overcast and cloudy but no rain. Yet.

I’m just glad I’ve got everything I need in the house. Lunch is ready and I’ve got plans to make a ton of beef stew later today.

Beef stew is easy. Plus I did all the shopping and prep work yesterday. Today it’s just a case of browning the meat and then tossing everything else into the pot and letting it go for a few hours.

Election’s over…Republicans don’t have to pretend they’re not racist for another 18 months.

A prominent South Carolina Republican killed his Facebook page Sunday after being caught likening the First Lady to an escaped gorilla.

I love his “non-pology”….

Busted by South Carolina political blogger Will Folks on his FITNEWS blog, DePass told WIS-TV in Columbia, “I am as sorry as I can be if I offended anyone. The comment was clearly in jest.”

Then he added, “The comment was hers, not mine,” claiming Michelle Obama made a recent remark about humans descending from apes. The Daily News could find no such comment.

It’s going to be a long couple of years.

And buried me like a human.

I’m a bit puzzled. I know the clan is a messed up fruity club and I loathe their tactics of herassing Ferguson protesters but championing their outing by Anonimous, while simultanously condemning the same act by “the other Charles Johnson” (who publisized personal information of hospital nurses suffering from Ebola on twitter), seems to me a bit like a double standard case.
