Right Wing Bloggers Pathetically Over-Reaching to Smear Brian Williams

Going for the gotcha and tripping over their own feet
Wingnuts • Views: 29,648

I’ll start this post by noting that if Brian Williams is found to have lied about his experiences in Iraq, it’s a serious issue that needs to be addressed. But doubt remains about whether he deliberately embellished his story or is suffering from a false memory — a very common problem.

Having said that, I’ve been looking at some right wing blog posts about Williams today, and laughing. Out loud, even. Because these loons are getting more and more ridiculous with their over-reaching smear attempts. (Of course, it doesn’t matter to the right wing audience; they’ll swallow any kind of slop these bloggers feed them and regurgitate it for years without caring whether it’s true or not.)

Here’s one example, at the hate site built by Andrew Breitbart, where editor John Nolte has a real GOTCHA for Brian: Brian Williams and the Amazing, Evolving Walter Mondale College Dropout Tale - Breitbart.

Nolte pulls out two quotes, from an Esquire interview in 2005, and a Star-Ledger article in 2009. In the Esquire interview, Williams says:

One day, I’m at the copy machine in the White House and Walter Mondale comes up behind me and clears his throat. A classic throat-clearing. I thought people only did that in movies, but it turns out vice-presidents do it, too. Anyway, it makes for an exceptionally good morning, and I run from the White House to the GW campus for class. I’m still wearing my West Wing hard pass on a chain, and when my professor sees it, he admits that he’s only been to the White House on the public tour. And I thought to myself, This is costing me money that I don’t have, and I’m a young man in too much of a hurry. So I left school.

In the Star-Ledger article, writer Peggy McGlone describes this sequence of events slightly differently:

But then a friend invited him to drive to Washington, D.C., for a weekend, and everything changed. Smitten with the city and its youthful energy, Williams decided to move there. He transferred what credits he could from Brookdale to Catholic University and took a job in the public relations department to help pay his expenses. He landed an internship at the White House, and when that ended, he answered an ad for a clerking job at a broadcasting association.

Nolte goes for the score:

In the Esquire interview, Williams makes it sound as though his dramatic run-in with then-Vice President Walter Mondale resulted in an immediate decision to drop out of college. Yet, according to the tale he told the Star-Ledger, he did not drop out until after the White House internship ended and he had answered an ad that resulted in an introduction with the head of a local television station in Kansas.

GOTCHA, BRIAN! Hah. Try to get out of that one, you left wing radical news anchor!

Do I have to point out that the first quote consists of Williams’ own words, but the second quote is a writer’s summary of events — not Williams’ own words? This is so ludicrous it boggles the mind, but that’s normal for the clowns at Breitbart “News.”

Oh, and there’s a credit at the end of Nolte’s post:

Dan Riehl’s original research contributed to this report.

You mean this Dan Riehl?

It’s a bucket brigade of stupid.

Let’s face it: accuracy is not the purpose of wingnut media.

It’s stoking that sense that one’s constant anger and sneering self-righteousness is true and meaningful, because “the enemy” is axiomatically perfidious and malefic.

The emotional “truth” trumps actual veracity by design.

Liberals get caught doing unethical things.

Therefore, their unethical actions nullify any objection to unethical behavior on the wingnut side of tings.

Therefore, wingnuts are faultless.

Also, bad behavior by liberals is a manifestation of deep and sinister truths about their collective character, while wingnut mistakes are a brief lapse.

Also, they talked to God, and you should totally believe them that God forgave them.

Also, the unethical thing they did was also kind of awesome and you should be impressed by their rudeness, promiscuity, and/our venality because those are Real Man stuff.

Something else interesting about the article - they only seem to refer to the ectopic implantation as an ‘embryo’, whereas invariably they refer to anything else diploid as a ‘baby’. That’s more than a little disingenuous on their part.

‘Surgery to remove an embryo’ - if only there were a shorter term, perhaps a single word to describe such a procedure.

Conservative gun vs rapist memes rely on the “unidentified assailant”, they never take into account that most rapists are known acquaintances, co-workers or family members.

Gabrielle Anwar (holding the gun) on guns:

Have you had weapons training?
I haven’t had any formal training in much of anything, actually. But I did go shoot some pretty heavy machinery a few years back, because not only are the weapons incredibly heavy, but it’s very disconcerting to be holding something that actually is a murder weapon, that unless used properly could bring down an entire family, which kind of throws me for a loop. I’m an ardent pacifist in reality, so I’ve made it very clear to my children from the get-go that there would be no guns in the house. Now, here’s mummy going off to work, doing that very thing for a living. So I’m a bit of a bloody hypocrite now that I think of it.

This might be the stupidest conservative meme I’ve ever seen…and that’s saying something.

Asinine. This kind of fantasy advice is getting people killed.

My first wife’s cousin, Linda, actually did shoot and kill an intended rapist back in the 70s.
The encounter differed from many real world situations, as well as from gun sucker fantasy, in several respects. Linda grew up on a ranch and had been using firearms all her life, the incident happened in her own home, the lights were on, and she was not grabbed by surprise. The weapon was a side-by-side shotgun.
Contrary to the fantasy, she did not stand over the body triumphantly declaring, “Take that, asshole!” Though she never had an instant’s doubt about justification (and neither did anyone else), she was badly shaken by the incident. Part of this was the condition of the miscreant’s remains. Being a real expert, she hit him twice, in the forehead and neck, and he was literally decapitated.
This was in the days before those crime scene cleanup services, and I volunteered to help her boyfriend, a fellow veteran, clean the blood and brains off the walls, the floor, and the ceiling. The room had to be re-carpeted and re-painted after that.
Sorry if that’s too graphic but it pisses me off to no end that so many people choose to ignore the grisly reality of what they so gleefully propose to do.

Using sexy women in suggestive poses can influence women to think, “I’d be so sexy holding a gun! I’d better get one cuz guys think it’s hot too!”

It makes sense to try to market guns to women as well because why should they give up on half the population, especially since so many women do not already have any? (I can’t help but think that once upon a time a marketing exec doubled shampoo sales by adding one word to the instructions: “Repeat”.)

95 A Cranky One  Feb 9, 2015 12:33:22pm

Back when my kids were very young, the ex decided she wanted a gun in the house for protection. She insisted it was safe because she grew up in a house with guns and so didn’t think it would be a problem (I was totally opposed to the idea).

So we reached a compromise. I purchased a CO2 BB pistol and used that to teach her gun safety and the basics of shooting; the idea was that once I was comfortable she understood how to handle a weapon we would discuss the issue again.

One day she saw a very large German Shepard digging up her garden. So she decided to bounce a BB off it’s back leg to run it off. Took the pistol and aimed out the bathroom window at the dog. Gun was unsteady, so she moved her left hand under the barrel to steady it and fired. But her index finger had curled up a bit and was blocking the barrel. Shot herself in the finger (BB burrowed up from the middle joint to the tip of her finger under the skin).

Did you know that a BB gun wound is classified as a Gun Shot Wound in Illinois? I didn’t. Anyway, long story short, no gun was purchased.

Accuracy ratings (and I’m only counting the mostly false, false, and pants on fire as aggregate):
Sean Hannity : 33%.

Rush Limbaugh: 83%. That’s right. 83%. If he says something, you’d probably be better off thinking the exact opposite exists if Rush says something is true. Check the color of the sky.

Bill O’Reilly: 53%.

Frankly, surprised that Hannity was better than I expected.

For comparison:

Olbermann: 29%.

John Oliver: 0. Yeah, I know, surprising right? It is.

Sarah Palin (that is when you can actually figure out what she’s saying): 55%.

re: #150 Prof. Backpfeifengesicht, PhD

He or she can’t even write correctly. It’s Volk.

Völkisch is correct; it derives from the German word volk, but with the umlauts, apparently it means something more akin to ethnocentric or ethno-nationalistic. In his case, it seems like he (or she) may have conflated the two meaning, thinking them entirely interchangeable.

Unless what they mean is “völkisch religion”, which sounds to me like some weird quasi-pagan-ethnocentric religious movement. Which it could be - such a thing wouldn’t surprise me in the slightest.

The völkisch movement (original name: völkische Bewegung) is the German interpretation of the populist movement, with a romantic focus on folklore and the “organic”. The term völkisch (pronounced [ⲏœlkɪʃ]) derives from the German word Volk (cognate with the English “folk”), corresponding to “people”, with connotations in German of “people-powered”, “folksy” and “folkloric”. According to the historian James Webb, the word also has “overtones of ‘nation’, ‘race’ and ‘tribe’…” A direct translation would somehow be “ethnic”, with, however, very different connotations in English. Therefore this term cannot be used for translation. Strictly speaking, the term völkisch has no direct translation in English, as no existing term corresponds to its exact meaning, but it could be rendered as “ethno-nationalistic”, “racial-nationalistic”, “ethno-racialist” or similar, which comes close to the actual meaning and use of the word.

Revelations.

The correct answer is always Revelations.

Every other book of the Bible exists only to be interpreted with relation to Revelations. The moral instructions, sayings, parables, and prophecies all have secret true meaning that can only be perceived with the magic decoder ring of Revelations.

And shockingly, the secret meaning of the whole Bible is that the Book of Revelations is the only one that matters, and the end of the world means none of that moral stuff matters.

Vultee V-11
Very similar but for land based use only and quite a bit larger. The US AAC purchased 7 as YA-19s for evaluation but decided it liked the new twin engined light bombers better. It had a crew of 3, with the bombardier apparently occupying the rear most position (note window behind canopy) and using a floor mounted sight as well as a hatch mounted lower gun. It could easily carry 5 or 6 people and five of the YA-19s were later assigned to air attaches in Central America as liaison aircraft. It was also notable for its range, 1350 miles (much more with auxiliary fuel), which made it a favorite of the small Brazilian Air Force of the time. The Brazilians had 25 of them and used one for a ground breaking 2000+ mile nonstop flight completely across the undeveloped regions of the country.

Actually not related. The Dauntless was produced by Douglas.

Though if you go look at late-30s single-engine attack plane designs (usually 2, or 3 seaters) you will see a lot of similar designs. A product of the technology levels of the time, and desire for similar features.

* - didn’t serve with the USN though.

Tells you a lot about the technology pushing capabilities in a fairly short period. The Vindicator and Devastator in 1936-37 was the USN’s first *monoplane* attack aircraft.

Dubbed “Iron Pants”
With the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, the war in Afghanistan, and the approaching Iraq War, Holt became MSNBC’s lead anchor for daytime news and breaking news coverage. From October of 2002 until March of 2003 Holt anchored Countdown: Iraq, the station’s nightly news coverage of the impending invasion. As the Iraq War intensified, Holt became chief war anchor from noon until 6 PM and again from 9 PM until midnight. Often he was back at 7 AM to substitute on NBC’s Today show. In April of 2003 Holt began cohosting Weekend Today. He was working seven days a week at the two stations.

And that’s supposed to prove he was never in danger while he was in Lebanon.

This is so fucking stupid. Why do people fall for this sleazy shit?

Compare with O’Reilly’s accurate memory:

Here’s what O’Reilly writes in his book about his report: when he finally arrived in Meanguera, “the place was leveled to the ground and fires were still smoldering. But even though the carnage was obviously recent, we saw no one live or dead. There was absolutely nobody around who could tell us what happened. I quickly did a stand-up amid the rubble and we got the hell out of there.”
……….snip………..
(but from what can be seen in the video…)
First off, Meanguera isn’t “leveled.” There are some knocked-down buildings, and a bit of rubble in front of which O’Reilly gives his “impressive” stand-up. But most of the town seems intact. No “smoldering” fires are to be seen. “We saw no one, alive or dead,” he writes. But I counted at least eight people who looked like residents of the town in the broadcast, going about their business. Also, the clip makes clear that O’Reilly actually got a fly-over helicopter tour of the region by the Salvadoran army, to survey infrastructure damage caused by the rebels—so at least part of his harrowing journey into “Indian Country” was at an altitude.

225 FemNaziBitch  Feb 9, 2015 2:46:22pm

There had been some discussion earlier about governments and law and the origins of rights coming from God …

The source is from the 1850 —just after the French Revolution.

What Is Law?

What, then, is law? It is the collective organization of the individual right to lawful defense.

Each of us has a natural right — from God — to defend his person, his liberty, and his property. These are the three basic requirements of life, and the preservation of any one of them is completely dependent upon the preservation of the other two. For what are our faculties but the extension of our individuality? And what is property but an extension of our faculties? If every person has the right to defend even by force — his person, his liberty, and his property, then it follows that a group of men have the right to organize and support a common force to protect these rights constantly. Thus the principle of collective right — its reason for existing, its lawfulness — is based on individual right. And the common force that protects this collective right cannot logically have any other purpose or any other mission than that for which it acts as a substitute. Thus, since an individual cannot lawfully use force against the person, liberty, or property of another individual, then the common force — for the same reason — cannot lawfully be used to destroy the person, liberty, or property of individuals or groups.

If this is true, then nothing can be more evident than this: The law is the organization of the natural right of lawful defense. It is the substitution of a common force for individual forces. And this common force is to do only what the individual forces have a natural and lawful right to do: to protect persons, liberties, and properties; to maintain the right of each, and to causejustice to reign over us all.

UN: Muslims ethnically cleansed in CAR

Christian militias in Central African Republic have carried out ethnic cleansing of the Muslim population during the country’s ongoing civil war, but there is no proof there was genocidal intent, a United Nations commission of inquiry has said.

“Thousands of people died as a result of the conflict. Human rights violations and abuses were committed by all parties. The Seleka coalition and the anti-balaka are also responsible for war crimes and crimes against humanity,” the inquiry said on Thursday.

“Although the commission cannot conclude that there was genocide, ethnic cleansing of the Muslim population by the anti-balaka constitutes a crime against humanity,” the report said.

The final report of the inquiry, which was submitted to the UN Security Council on December 19, said up to 6,000 people had been killed though it “considers that such estimates fail to capture the full magnitude of the killings that occurred”.

Walker’s London trip comes on the heels of a visit there last week by New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie. Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal was there in January as part of a 10-day trade mission across Europe. We are richer and can (if we really really want to) throw a large and well-equipped military at them. It’s just a scaled up version of “it’s yours until someone decides to take it away from you”.

At the nation-state level a whole lot of rules don’t apply. There are connections and inter-relationships due to living on the same planet and due to distribution of resources. Beyond that it’s generally being polite and opting to work things out quietly since wars are generally non-productive and bad for business. But note that if they are small and relatively unimportant we let rogue states run rampant all over its own citizenry since we are not quite willing to spend that much of our own political capital and treasure to go in and throw them out. And then spend a lot more time and treasure trying to build up a new state, unless we are going to drop back to occupation and empire building.

What I find interesting is the Right’s perennial claims of ‘god-given rights’ that our government is trampling by not letting poor people die due to lack of healthcare, while at the same time they firmly believe that people in other countries do not have the right to choose their own government. IOW, those ‘god-given rights’ apply only to themselves. Apparently God only gave such rights to Americans.

You run into the same thinking when you insist on due process for immigrants, be they documented or not. They claim Constitutional rights only apply to citizens, so presumably we are free to do whatever we want to any immigrants, despite whatever inalienable rights God gave them.

But hey, what am I going on about? Conservatism is nothing if not the ability to simultaneously hold mutually exclusive positions with no apparent mental discomfort.

Memes again? Are they ever correct in any detail? Okay but let’s not take this so far as to think a rape or rapist is never stopped by a woman with a gun. Obviously if you are surprised, well there is no weapon or policeman that can help. It’s rare, but it happens.

Came down to this-Training, practice, good locks and the fast safe keep the guns legal and locked. If someone breaks in to do harm, she does not want to be resorting to a club or knife or jumping out our 2nd story window to escape. Or patiently awaiting the late attentions of law enforcement. Choices. Nuance and rational choices never seem to fit in a meme.

What is being implied by the gun worshippers is that guns will stop all rapes. That is ridiculous. Even if a woman has a loaded weapon, if it isn’t in her hand when she is attacked, the probability she can access it, point it, fire it and hit the target is vanishingly small.

Reality has to be part of what women are being advised to do. Telling them that guns are a sure defence will give them a false sense of security. What is necessary is a multi-pronged program to reduce rapes, including education, social pressure, defensive attitude, and perhaps training & weapons.

Weapons are likely the least helpful, simply because of the bravado that comes with them coupled with the difficulty in actually implementing there use during an attack.

Reality is seldom simple, advice on how to deal with it shouldn’t be too simple either.

288 The Very Reverend Battleaxe of Knowledge  Feb 9, 2015 4:28:47pm

I wasn’t old enough to vote, but I really liked Greene’s position that we should give Eastern Washington to Idaho; and if they wouldn’t take it, call out the National Guard and make them take it by force of arms.

We’d be much better off by now if that had been implemented.

A great analogy: I’m an Anti-Braker

Guys, I wanted to let you know about a personal decision I recently made. I don’t really feel like discussing it, but I want to put my position out there. Please be respectful. This is a really long post, but please read the whole thing.

I’m taking the brakes off my car. This isn’t a rash decision, so please listen up.

A few weeks ago I saw a car accident - two people went through an intersection at the same time. Both slammed on their brakes at the same time and collided. Fortunately no one was seriously injured.

But then it occurred to me - if they had just gone through the intersection, they wouldn’t have collided. The brakes CAUSED the accident!

So, I decided to do my own research and what I found was *staggering*: Hundreds of people every year are seriously injured by unnecessary braking. One time, I was driving in the snow and I just lightly tapped my brakes and it caused my car to COMPLETELY LOSE CONTROL. My brakes could have very easily gotten me killed. Even more astoundingly is how often brake pads will warp and distort rotors, causing bumpy rides and squeaky wheels.

And you know what? I also found that decades ago brakes weren’t even used! People would control their vehicle’s speed with downshifting and engine braking. Maybe it’s just coincidence, but back when engine braking was used there were almost no automotive fatalities. There were NEVER brake caused car accidents…

The whole piece is excellent and worth a read.

I hate the IRA unconditionally, but if it’s true as Timothy Watson says in 67, that this is a photo of a PIRA member, I don’t think they were Marxist. I remember the Provisional IRA splitting off from the main body after the Maoist takeover. Counterintuitively perhaps, the Provisional Wing was soon the vast majority.

This was kind of like when Lenin’s wing of the Russian Socialist Worker’s Party won a minor procedural vote at one poorly-attended party congress and called themselves ever-after “Bolsheviks”—men of the majority. In the IRA’s case, they didn’t let the fringe get away with it.

I was unaware that Carter was the reason the Shah was overthrown:

[Embedded content]

Here I was, thinking it was Islamists taking advantage of existing conditions to seize power, when it was Carter all along.

Strangely enough, it was actions by the United States that eventually brought forth the Islamic Revolution in Iran - namely by our removal of a democratically-elected president (Mohammed Mosaddhegh) by the CIA in 1952, and installing Mohammad Pahlavi as Shah - all due to the desire of United States oil interests wanting to take control of Iran’s nationalized oil industry. Pahlavi was a dictator in every sense of the word, with suppression of dissent that could easily be compared with fascist regimes of the World War II era. The primary reason that the Islamists came to power was that Pahlavi’s brutality toward dissidents was so severe, and was seen (somewhat correctly) as being propped up by the western world that internal forces became too great, and radicals were able to usurp the revolutionary movement.
