OK, I don’t get the Pretend Salt thing.
Christians and churches claim to be the “salt of the earth”. “Pretend salt” would mean that this particular brand of crazy thinks that conservatives are trying to horn in on Jesus’ territory, pretending to be The One True Way. Or something like that.
Today I learned about Pretend Salt. I am complete.
I’m still trying to wrap my head around “Truth is hate to those who hate the truth”. When used in defense of a religion, which by definition is an un-proveable and subjective thing…? My brain breaks… What the hell is in the water down there?
Just a little refresher on the Salt and Light Brigade asshole. (from last night’s thread)

Basically the various flavors of Christianists, which, despite the ridiculous amount of noise they make, really aren’t all that many. The problem is that a lot of politicians pander to them precisely because of the ridiculous amount of noise they make, disproportionate to their numbers.

I’m serious—these are NOT healthy, well-adjusted people. They can’t deal with external reality, so they’ve created an alternate one, the walls of which no amount of logic or reason can penetrate. They can’t afford to let anything over the wall because it’ll cause their carefully constructed fantasy to collapse, then they will collapse, or so they fear.

Revolt in 2100 was just If This Goes On…, Coventry, and Misfit collected under one cover. If This Goes On… was published in 1941 IIRC. (And the “2100” was a misnomer—the Second American Revolution was in 2076. Of course.)

So today I find myself the new caretaker for a 15-week old miniature dachshund puppy. I live in a second floor apartment, the only entrance being a long and steep flight of stairs. Needless to say, the puppy has (and likely always will have) a hard time navigating the stairs to go outside to toilet and, given dachshunds’ propensity for injury, I’d prefer to find an alternative. Carrying him up and down isn’t a great option since the stairs are outside and exposed which could be hazardous during our not-so-wonderful Wisconsin winters.
So after doing a little reading on the web, I’m thinking that litter-box training him might be a decent option. He’s not housebroken at all, so I’m pretty much starting from a clean slate as far as learned behavior. (Clean slate for my behavior as well; I’ve owned dogs before but they’ve always been older, never a puppy and never one I’ve had to potty train.)
I’ve been working with him today getting him to climb into the empty litter-box when I tell him to “go to your box”. He’s doing pretty well with that for the first day, at least as long as we start in the same room as the box. My thinking is to get him trained to go to the box when directed and work from there.
If anyone has experience litter-box training a dog before, any dog training experience at all really, I’m definitely open to any advice or suggestions!

The county agreed to pay $8.7 million to settle lawsuits by people who said they were investigated on trumped-up allegations. Arpaio contended he was trying to root out corruption in county government.
Even with the settlement, the Justice Department is continuing its legal efforts against Arpaio. The federal agency recently joined a separate racial profiling lawsuit that was pressed against the sheriff’s office by the American Civil Liberties Union.

I have no idea what he is saying in his New Hampshire commercials, but I saw where Kasich is way up in recent polling in that state. I think he worked his way into second with 12% of the vote.
He is targeting with a big TV budget there for some reason and really not all that involved in Iowa. Who knows if he can make any real headway nationally and if he does can he hold it or will people get sick of him and down he goes. Similar to Scott Walker, now almost down to “who” status in this race.

Harvard Law Professor Crowdfunds $1 Million, Launches Presidential Bid
Harvard Law Professor Lawrence Lessig met his self-imposed goal of crowd-funding $1 million by Labor Day, and Sunday on ABC announced he’s running for the Democratic nomination for President.
Lessig, an activist with a grassroots following among some progressives, says he’s running on a singular platform — the Citizen Equality Act of 2017. It would expand voting access, ban gerrymandering and institute campaign finance reform.
“I think I’m running to get people to acknowledge the elephant in the room,” Lessig said Sunday on ABC. “This stalemate, partisan platform of American politics in Washington right now doesn’t work. And we have to find a way to elevate the debate to focus on the changes that would actually get us a government that could work again, that is not captured by the tiniest fraction of the one percent who fund campaigns.”
As NPR’s Peter Overby reported last month for our It’s All Politics blog, Lessig’s presidential bid —and campaign strategy — seems to be a long shot.
“The plan sidesteps the biggest growth area in political money: superPACs and so-called social welfare organizations that raise unlimited sums for “independent” efforts to promote candidates. This unregulated money, some disclosed and some anonymous, is constitutionally protected by recent court decisions, including the Supreme Court’s Citizens United ruling in 2010.”
This latest entrant brings the number of candidates on the Democratic side up to six.Should Lessig beat the odds and win the White House, he would not be there very long, if things go according to his plan. Once the Citizen Equality Act is signed into law, he’s vowed to vacate the Oval Office and hand over power to his vice president.

Here’s where my inexperience in training dogs is obvious though: Do I leave him in there most of the day and only take him out for walks/play/etc. or do I leave him run free most of the day and only confine him in there after meal times?
You want to build the behavior in steps.
Dogs are very scent oriented, so you need to prevent him from urinating/defecating anywhere but the chosen spot. If there are accidents, you should clean the area with something to eliminate the smell completely.
If the dog is alone during the day, I’d recommend keeping him confined while alone until he is comfortably paper trained. If he’s confined, make sure there are some toys and something to chew on to help with boredom (young dogs love to chew, so give them something or they’ll find something).
Note that male dogs may try to mark their territory, so if he does, the cleaning advice above is important.
I’d tend to allow him to be free if you’re home. Dogs are social creatures and require companionship. Until he’s fully paper trained keep an eye on him (possibly use the gate to limit access to areas where you aren’t (other than the bathroom of course)). Be aware that scolding about accidents after the fact is useless, dogs can’t make the association. If you see him squat or lift a leg, yell (or toss something soft) to prevent the accident and then move him to the bathroom and keep him there until he goes. Dogs are also very food oriented, so small treats are very good positive reinforcement when he does the correct thing (but must be given immediately after the desired behavior).
Dogs do tend to defecate after eating, so putting him in the bathroom after a meal is probably a good idea, but I’d let him out as soon as he does his business. You don’t want to create an association of being in the bathroom with being unhappy.
Immediate feedback and consistency are the keys to successful training. Best of luck with your adorable new friend!
(I have 5 dogs. Three were rescues with severe behavior problems. Now all are well behaved and valued members of the family. Remember, one step at a time and rewards immediately after the desired behaviors will work wonders!)

I wouldn’t say “most.” Just because there is a small but very vocal and obnoxious contingent of nativists does not mean all Americans are like them. Most people in the States take a “live and let live” attitude, despite the nutcases who want to deport millions and throw the rest in the slammer.

“White” isn’t my race. It’s a general descirption of my skin-tone. I include DNA from the Irish, German, English, and Dutch races, but that’s not an exhaustive list. My nationality is American. My family is generally paler-skinned. Am I proud of the color of my skin? Why? I enjoy having skin, but… Okay, I have more freckles than I’d like.
Here’s something I’m proud of: my great-great-grandfather was at Chickamauga, serving under the nephew of Thaddeus Stevens. Captain Stevens was killed right beside him. In 1876, my grandfather was born, and his father named him Thaddeus after the great “black” Republican and the author of the 14th Amendment.
