National Review Writer Upset Because Donald Trump Isn’t Saying the Magic Words

Magical thinking
Politics • Views: 57,641

National Review’s Jim Geraghty is disturbed and upset because Donald Trump isn’t intoning the correct magic right wing words in his speeches: Donald Trump’s Message Doesn’t Include ‘Liberty’ or ‘Freedom’.

Did you ever think you would see the day when the GOP front-runner rarely uttered the words “freedom” and “liberty”?

Perhaps some Republicans can be accused of loving liberty and freedom too much — or at least using those words as rhetorical crutches. Donald Trump is not one of them. The current GOP presidential front-runner rarely uses the words “freedom” or “liberty” in his remarks at all.

Trump didn’t use the words “freedom” or “liberty” in his announcement speech. He didn’t use those words in his Nashville speech on August 29, or his Nashville rally on August 21, or his appearance at the Iowa State Fair on August 15, or his rally and news conference in New Hampshire on August 14, or his news conference in Birch Run, Mich., or his press conference in Laredo, Texas, on July 23.

He didn’t use those words while discussing his signing of the Republican National Committee’s pledge last Thursday, or in his contentious interview with Hugh Hewitt the same day.

At least Trump said “free market,” though. That ought to be good for a few magic political credits.

Trump did use the term “free-market” once during his Meet the Press interview with Chuck Todd, in a defense of his qualified support for affirmative action: “Well, you know, you have to also go free market. You have to go capability. You have to do a lot of things. But I’m fine with affirmative action.” The word “liberty” didn’t even come up.

But just look at this word cloud created by the Washington Post. No freedom. No liberty. This is very bad. (h/t: @jaunte.)

And so it begins, where the various factions of wingnut start to pick The Donald apart for every perceived slight, until nobody wants to vote for him anymore.

The NRO et al. have spent decades tossing shit, crude oil and incendiaries into said landfill and are now acting surprised that offal like Trump can rise to the top of their degenerate party primary.

This kind of intra-party feuding couldn’t happen to a nicer bunch of raging assholes.

strange but true:

- doesn’t continually insist that lowering taxes for rich people and eradicating worker protection will solve all humanity’s ills

- doesn’t rant on and on about the war against christians, men, white people, or rush to the side of god-mongerers like kim davis

- actually castigates republicans for their plans to get rid of or castrate ss and medicare and medicaid

on the other hand:

- continually insists that massive protectionism will solve all of our economic and geopolitical problems

- doesn’t hesitate to stir up the yahoos, especially racists, even though he isn’t one himself

- is fixated on the fucking WALL

- has no other concrete policy positions of any kind

Trump is the consummate grifter. He’s worked the con for so long and so well that it’s just natural to him. He’s worked that 3 card monte con on just about every walk of life and he’s, as he would tell you, a Celebrity! He’s a snake oil salesman and he’s hijacked the garden the GOP worked so hard to fertilize and harvest. He’s a connoisseur of bullshit. The GOP is shitting their collective pants. So he signed a deal not to run a 3rd party campaign? That’s a good one. Not worth the paper it’s printed on.

Everything about Trump’s campaign so far can be explained as Trump telling a pack of lies to fools that want to believe the lies (especially if coming from a famous rich asshole).

It remains to be seen if this will suffice to win in the general election (I think he’s pretty much got the GOP nomination in the bag).

That article is the epitome of spinelessness. The simple truth of the matter is that these days it is pretty much impossible for a civilized person to justify voting GOP in a contested general election.

It is unhelpful for spineless centrist/liberal squishes to try to gloss over this fact. Anecdotes about Chris Christie’s being a big fan of Bruce Springsteen cut no ice with me when Christie and his party are busy screwing everything up.

re: #68 Dark_Falcon

The emails? I’ve got something for you on that matter. Don’t worry, it doesn’t link to NRO.

Right, so instead you link to John Schindler:

Remember John Schindler, the conservative talking head, retired NSA spook, and Naval War College professor who briefly went incognito after screenshots of (what appear to be) his penis leaked onto the Internet? While he has since reappeared to Twitter—where he first drew attention for defending domestic spying and criticizing Edward Snowden—he has refused to comment on the mysterious emails, sent to the Naval War College by an unnamed blogger, that prompted the school to place him on leave, and his penis under official investigation.

The emails sent to NWC, which Gawker obtained under a Freedom of Information Act request, refer to Schindler’s habit of calling himself a “spy”; detail his correspondence with an unnamed woman (who apparently received his penis photo); and, in a lengthy missive, accuse Schindler of staging “cyber warfare” against his online enemies, using “thuggish tactics” to silence NSA critics, and violating various federal laws.

Each of the messages is heavily redacted, and the identities of their senders obscured, due to the ongoing investigation into Schindler’s conduct. But the last email is detailed (and nutty) enough to earn a closer reading, so we’ve embedded it below. You can read the rest here. Let us know if anything sticks out.

Please note that if you’re trying to use LGF with Javascript turned off, you’re going to have problems. It’s no longer really feasible to support browsers that aren’t using Javascript; too many things in our code depend on it now.

Drive by-So saw the first real hack attack happen up close at a site I care for and help admin. Yikes. The details are a little beyond me but in just seconds a few GET requests and a nasty payload tried to put in hostile content. I happened to catch it as it started, and with some fast expert help it got thwarted.

Point is I realize I have been incautious online. That’s gonna change albeit a step at a time.Insofar as I can what with personal and professional YT channels. Public spokesman/rep for a small company trying to grow with online tools. Involved at executive level in a controversial sport. One rife with folks that don’t appreciate a far more moderate view.

Well I’m am who I am. Just gonna take more sensible steps to inhibit troublemakers. Bottom line is lesson learned.

Then why are some GOP candidates and boosters doing it? They act like Obama is running for a third term.

Hell, they’re still running against Jimmy Carter. Obama, Carter, Bill Clinton, are only symbols to them - just like Muslims, people of color, and those mired in generational poverty. It makes no difference to the GOP; they’re all the enemy so they’re all the same.

Remember when John Schindler got in trouble for transmitting pictures of his limp dick to the wimmins? That was awesome.

Schindler may have had some secrets of his own leak out in the open. Late Sunday, a Twitter user published several pics of emails and texts purportedly from Schindler to a female conservative tweeter. He “was involved in some sort of flirty, lurid exchange of emails and texts with a Twitter user named @currahee88,” a longtime Twitter follower of the professor’s says. “In one screencapped exchange, he sent her a picture of his mostly flaccid penis.”

So yeah, please, let’s do have some more hot takes from that guy about Hillary’s so called inappropriate use of email.

I have beaten the crap out of Stormfronters on the internet for almost 15 years.

I have torn new assholes in anti-semites peddling USS Liberty garbage and Rothschild central bank weirdo conspiracies.

I have actually chased human debris like that from entire forums.

I mostly despise Trump and fervently pray he never becomes president.

I have thrashed his ridiculous perfervid followers everywhere.

I am extremely disappointed with Ann Coulter, whom i have greatly admired., for her uncritical devotion to Trump.

Having said the above, i have a serious question for NR:

WHY is it an unspeakable crime to express pride in one’s European heritage in America today, even in supposedly anti-pc National Review?

The peoples whose original homeland extended extended from the Urals to Lisbon, from Trondheim to Malta, have been, over the past 1000 years, the most creative, energetic, brilliant, accomplished, valorous people on the planet, even if we are in steep cultural and spiritual decline now.

WHY is it wrong to express great pride in that, to want to preserve and celebrate it, to want to transmit it intact to our children and our descendants beyond them? Why is it ‘extreme’ and immoral to want to protect it from being swamped and overwhelmed by those with far different values? And i don’t mean Chinese, Japanese, or South Asians here, because they are the inheritors of great ancient civilizations too, but i mean the turbulent, chaotic mass of illiterate peoples from south of the border and the muslim world.

Where do YOU live, o writers and editors of the NRO? In America’s new and growing barrios?

I’m thinking NOT.

And that can be said for the writers and editors of the NYT, the WaPo, Harper’s, The New Republic and Salon.

You form communities with people who share your background, education and values. You live in The Hamptons, the Upper West Side, Newport Rhode Island, Martha’s Vineyard.

So WHY do you begrudge us lesser beings from doing the same?

They hide behind “Europeans have done great stuff, so why can’t I be proud of that?” shtick. The subtext is much the same as white supremacism, though. By boasting about European accomplishments — which would include the subjugation of large non-white populations across the globe — these Euro-white boosters are essentially saying everyone else is inferior, even as they say China, for example, has a rich and important history.

I mean I’m a white guy with Euro ancestry, but that’s not my self-identity. It’s not something I want to rub other people’s noses in, especially considering my current location, y’know? it’s just not that important to me. The present and the future are my focus, not the past.

That NRO article I linked above is such a theatre of clowns. The comments illustrate the reality of “conservatism” in 2015.

Put simply, “conservative” has been used so long as a cover word for xenophobes and racists, that the more academic economists who also like to call themselves “conservatives” now find they can’t rid them of the stench of the former.

Buckley, Nixon, … all that crowd have brought this about.

I don’t think anything of Trump other than he is an obnoxious reality-TV star and a businessman whose “success” is only possible in the current American landscape of legal gymnasiums which allow really good conmen to get money out of naive investors without negative consequence.

Still, Trump has become a tuning fork for the orchestra of American politics. Those now in tune with him are a motley crowd of nationalistic common-folk who for some reason feel aggrieved by the institutional politicians.

Trying to get the big names at NRO (like Goldberg) to own up to the fact that the racists have been there all the time because Buckley designed his coalition around the pre-1965 Civil Rights movement old-boy network … is going to be impossible. It would take too much self evaluation and honesty.

Because if they acknowledge that keeping the emails on a State Department server would not have made them any more secure, perhaps even less secure in light of recent hacks of US government servers, then the “scandal” collapses under its own weight. They have to keep alive the idea that she jeopardized national security in order to hide secrets from us, the American people, because this “scandal” is really the remaining support holding up “Benghazigate.” Without it, they’re left trying to scare people with things like “The Great Penis Hunt” and “Travelgate.”

Well, that was a mistake. Yahoo’s front page had Jen Rubin’s latest missive, namely her declaration that Senate Democrats were committing a mistake by filibustering the vote to disapprove of the Iran nuclear agreement. She’s not only confident that the GOP is set to come out of this ahead, but she’s also engaged in historical revisionism by portraying Democrats as the losers of the government shutdown two years ago.

In other words, WAPO’s diversity hire continues to demonstrate just how much of a joke she really is.

White nationalists are people who agree with the founding fathers and realize that America is a country for Whites.

Trump is the wild card. He’s the only GOP candidate people are paying attention to, because he’s saying what most voters think are the key issues. The other 32 (or whatever the number is) candidates all sounded the same, said the same things, and mostly focused on social issues that, frankly, most Americans are mostly indifferent to. He’s also pulled out in to the open the racist, nativist and sexist tendencies of the GOP base. The other candidates have nowhere to go. If they denounce Trump’s racist, nativist and sexist remarks, they lose their appeal with the same base he’s sucked away from them. There is no other GOP candidate who comes even close to having Trump’s popularity or media draw.

The convention is going to be really interesting, if Trump manages to stay viable that long. He’s not the leadership’s preferred nominee. If they pick someone else, Trump could go rogue as a third party candidate, and thereby ensure the Democrats win. On the other hand, if the GOP embraces Trump, it’s admitting it’s the party of disaffected white racist, sexist and nativist males — no others need apply for membership.

The only thing that will root out the WN base of the right is death. Either they try to rise up and we execute them, as we should have the last time they dared to stand up like they were anything, or the right pushes them out and they die alone and friendless in the vast wasteland, succumbing to the pressures of a world that no longer keeps them. And the latter will never happen, because without that contingent of drooling meatsticks and hate-fed evolutionary throwbacks the right cannot win.

Trump has not tapped into the Bible-thumper demographic at all, so his chances of winning the nomination or even the general election are slim, as far as I’m concerned. If he were going after the Religious Right like Cruz, Jindal, Huckabee, Santorum, Walker and Carson are, then I’d be a lot more worried. He’s probably counting on the VP nod. He knows by now how genuinely off-putting he is on his own. He figures that every group that he’s alienated Trump has already alienated as well, so it won’t matter what a grotesque little taint gremlin he really is. In other words he’s hoping to be the only one left that hasn’t given Trump cause to so thoroughly insult as to make partnership completely untenable.

There’s still a chance Trump won’t get the nod. A very good chance, since most Republicans still want to win. Tea partiers, Paulites, etc., make a lot of noise and then get beat by the Bushes and Roves of the party. I think a (small) majority of GOPers still want to do more than just vent and moan about America being too brown and not Jesus-y enough. Those cooler heads will likely prevail and realize over the course of the next 9 months that Trump is entertaining but unelectable.

On the other hand, Repubs may overestimate the amount of damage they’ve done to Hillary. In which case, their attitude may become, “Anyone we nominate will win.” At that point, there’s more possibility of Trump or one of the other totally unfit douchebags.

Sounds like you think Trump already has the nod and election sewn up. We’ve got a long way to go, and the Republicans will likely wake up one day, do their walk of shame, and run like hell AWAY from Trump. He’s a hell of a performance artist and self-promoter, but keeping up this charade for over another year is a tall order. And if he has to run against a Democrat who is under 99 years old, he’s probably gonna lose. He can’t put together enough minority and younger female voters to win an electoral map.

If I were a Republican, I would look at the fact that my party lost the last two prez elections by a combined 15 million votes. And then not take anything for granted. Even with voter ID laws and middling turnout, the electoral map isn’t an easy one for Republicans.

Now being a divorced man I’m probably not the ideal go to guy for what women are thinking, but experience has led me to believe most women aren’t going to find that bullshit incredibly compelling. Especially if the alternative is someone like Hilary, who despite whatever shortcomings she may posses is a genuine and passionate defender of women’s rights and equality.

You know the shame about that discussion is that I responded to an appeal to “Arrest these assholes”, and I suggested that if you want to arrest somebody you need cause. You can’t arrest people for being assholes. It took at least an hour for somebody to come up with a law, but the facts didn’t show a breach of that law. People ignored concrete arguments I made, accused me of making excuses for the OKs (I got tired of typing it out), and just insisting that they were right by way of repetition. It got to the point that they were sounding just like Dick Cheney, wanting to arrest people on the 1% chance that harm might result. In spite of the contempt I have for the OKs, I think they are being very careful about what they say.

Another big factor is that a woman at the bottom of the ticket means a hell of a lot less than a woman at the top. In fact, there haven’t been that many cases in recent history where the Veep made any difference at all. Paul Ryan and John Edwards, for example, were chosen to help win their home swing states in 2012 and 2004, respectively. They had little if any impact on the outcome of their home states, which they lost. Quite possibly the last time it really mattered was 1960, when LBJ helped JFK win TX.

What woman want’s to go on camera and defend her running mate saying Megyn Kellly was on the rag, that Carly Fiorina has a face too ugly to vote for, etc. And that’s before getting to all the ugly racism.

re: #280 teleskiguy

You were called out earlier because you were defending the OK’s. Simple as that. The only way those folks do any wrong in your mind is if they committed outright violence. Fact of the matter is there are laws against threats in these United States, and you don’t recognize them. You only recognize actual violence.

I stand by my earlier assertion that you’re *fucking* wrong on all that shit that was being argued downstairs.

Do you know what I was defending? The rule of law. The OKs showed no history of violence. Their statements about “interceding” if the sheriff didn’t were not expressly threats of violence. Putting the judge “on notice” is also not a violent threat. That speech is used all the time. I’m all for arresting people who interfere, but the actions of the OKs do not rise to the level requiring pre-emptive arrest.
I was pretty clear more than once that if somebody arrested the OK leader who said what I read in the piece at the top of the page, he would go before a judge and get a quick release. At all times I was pretty clear that I was talking about the law and NOT defending the Oath Keepers. I forget who accused me of making excuses for them, but more than once when I asked what excuse I made, the question was ignored. As far as I am concerned, that is a pretty ignorant thing to do, yet I’m the one called a jerk. I was patient, I presented arguments instead of emotion, and yet even you don’t get it.
Law. It sucks sometimes.

weather.com used to have a feature that when you looked at the month by month stats, they showed the daily record highs and lows. I went through the year for Philadelphia once and half the days of the year had record highs posted since 1990, but only 6 record lows. That feature isn’t there anymore, but I wonder how many places would show a similar shift if the tendency to have more record highs than lows. I haven’t found a resource that would just show the records in a list, maybe one of these days I’ll try the NWS again.

Actually I’ll stand behind that. When I said that a 120 pound person in a rage shouldn’t be underestimated, it was a valid thing to say, and Mattand responded in a very unkind way. It was not a defense of the people who harmed the lady, in fact I even said that first, yet he responded the way he did. Discourse has been taking some hits around here lately. On the board before that I had people who felt they knew all they needed to know about the US in 1980, and didn’t want to hear anything else. I can handle being wrong. It happened once:) I also make the effort to articulate my arguments instead of gainsay somebody I don’t agree with. I don’t throw any hand grenades into the threads and run away.

No, not wanting to date a HIV-carrier is not bigoted, is not HIV-shaming and is, in fact, a normal response. Because it’s not based on someone’s color of skin or religious beliefs. It’s a fucking deadly infection.

re: #298 Nyet

The comments by the article’s author in that guy’s facebook are stunning:

Simon, if you had read the piece you’d have noticed one salient fact: having an undetectable viral load makes a person uninfectious. So, what are those “health risks”? Do tell.

Oh dear, you haven’t grasped a simple fact. If the person is undetectable you can’t get HIV from them.

cdc.gov

Can I get HIV from someone who is living with HIV but has undetectable viral load?
Yes.
Even though having an undetectable viral load greatly lowers the chance that a person with HIV can transmit the virus to a partner, there is still some risk.

Viral load refers to the amount of HIV in the blood. An undetectable viral load is when the amount of HIV in the blood is so low that it can’t be measured. Antiretroviral therapy (ART) reduces viral load, ideally to an undetectable level, when taken consistently and correctly. A person with HIV can still potentially transmit HIV to a partner even if they have an undetectable viral load, because

HIV may still be found in genital fluids (e.g., semen, vaginal fluids). The viral load test only measures virus in blood.
A person’s viral load may go up between tests. When this happens, they may be more likely to transmit HIV to partners.
Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) increase viral load in genital fluids.

Nice “experts” you have there, Buzzfeed Health.

The risks can be mitigated somewhat with PrEP, but there is no vaccine. Also, if someone is going to take a prophylactic combination of medications, with their own set of side effect, just to be with you, that makes them accommodating on scale that far exceeds rational expectation. If you have HIV and you like someone and they’re willing to do that to be with you, congratulations you’ve hit the goddamned jackpot.

The really hilarious thing about that article though the dude was on Grindr but didn’t want to be judged. I mean, just what the fuck? Aren’t apps like Grindr and Tinder built entirely around people judging each other on the most shallow, surface level, prurient criteria?

On a scale of 0-100%, your total political bias was 16.67%. Your score suggests you are less biased than about 75% of other test takers. 50% of people get a score between 23% and 58%. The average score is 40.82%.

Not only because the wife nearly lost her life that day, but because of the fetishizing of this day (the husband’s wording, he began noticing it before the first anniversary) and all the anti Muslim screeds and death porn that pops up all over the place. She takes this day off and they spend the day at home with their doggies and stay off the internet and don’t watch TV. I don’t blame them.

I just bitched out someone who was whining on Facebook about how That Horrible Obama isn’t going to the NYC site today. I believe he’s going to a military base instead to thank our troops and first responders for the amazing job they did then. I pointed out that if the President did that, the logistics and security would interfere with actual family and friends who wanted to be there that day. Because security for a Presidential appearance anywhere isn’t just a matter of a couple bodyguards like it’s freaking Justin Beiber. He still hasn’t responded, ha. This whole mess has turned childish. Because Trump, like a typical bully, cannot stand even the slightest perceived insult or anyone showing him up in any form. Like many other negative traits, bullying has a ripple effect and brings out more of the same.

There’s a story of Trump riding on bikes with one of his exes (Ivanna? I can’t remember) and she rode past him, beating him in some little race they were having and it pissed him off, like he got off the bike and stomped around like a spoiled brat. That’s not the temperament of anyone who needs to be in charge of anything. That’s what Trump is, a spoiled brat, period. The rest of the GOP field isn’t much better.

Rep. Bill Foster (D-Ill.), who holds a doctorate in physics, said Tuesday that he had gone deep into the weeds on the pact’s technical merits and concluded that it passed muster to earn his support.

“After carefully weighing all of the options and possible outcomes I do believe that voting for this deal will make it less likely that Iran will develop a nuclear weapon,” Foster said in a press conference on Capitol Hill.

Today’s a rough day, especially for those who were here in the NYC metro area witnessing events unfold live - no tv, no radio, nothing but watching events with their own eyes and other senses - because after the towers fell, it was the smell that pervaded the region for weeks to come.

Even now, the smell of scorched metal (from welding/deconstruction/construction sites) can set me off. That smell will forever be linked to the fires that burned at Ground Zero for weeks after the attacks.

It’s one of the reasons I write those annual writeups, as a way to heal and reconcile what’s happened.

THE LATEST: CENTRAL EUROPEAN NATIONS REJECT MIGRANT QUOTAS

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, who has ordered his country’s border with Serbia to be turned into a razor-tipped fortress, says the solution to the European Union migration crisis lies in Greece.

“We have to take care of the problem where it exists,” Orban told a Budapest news conference. “If Greece is not capable of protecting its borders . we need to mobilize European forces to the Greek borders so that they can achieve the goals of European law instead of the Greek authorities. That is one of the foremost goals.”

Under EU asylum rules, those seeking refugee protection should apply in the first EU country they enter. Greece is the first EU country on the migration route that starts in Turkey and runs through the Balkans and Hungary. Thousands daily take short journeys by boat from the Turkish coast to Greece’s eastern Aegean islands.

But other EU nations in recent years have stopped deporting people back to Greece, citing its overwhelmed, dysfunctional asylum system. Germany recently decided to stop deporting people back to Hungary for similar reasons.

I don’t know how far this problem will go to undermining the EU project; my suspicion is that it is more potent than handling debt issues.

Oh, a gotcha photo of Cheney watching the attacks unfolding with his legs up on a desk. Cheney was and remains a bad apple, but he didn’t want the attacks to happen more than any one else who is in the USG.

It was a massive failure by his administration, and failures of the prior Clinton Admin., to take the AQ threats seriously and do what it took to go after AQ.

So, rather than focus on AQ, the Bush Administration focused on Iraq. Great plan that - for all the bad stuff Saddam Hussein did, including genocide/democide for which he should have been held for war crimes, we spent trillions on a conflict that detracted from the core mission of going after AQ.

Iraq opened up a huge can of worms that we’re still dealing with to this day. Not that Afghanistan is any better either - but key members of AQ are now either dead or in custody.

I never watched Trump on television but I get the feeling that this is all one big reality show to him. First, that he considers himself qualified to run for POTUS is stunning in itself. That he would put up a woman is simply more fodder for the newsies, meaning more press for him.

The problem is that they did want, desperately, an excuse to cause a war in Iraq. 14 years ago they got that excuse. In that sense, yes “they wanted it” much as Nixon and Kissinger “wanted” the coup in Chile that would claim the lives of as many as 30,000 Chilean citizens for the crimes like union membership or writing the wrong things.

As ‘thedopefishlives’ just said, that’s wrong to say. Dick Cheney did want to eliminate Saddam Hussein and vile sons and thus neutralize Iraq as a threat to the regional order, and he was hoping for an excuse to do that. But he didn’t want America to suffer a massive terror attack in order to have that excuse.

Believe me, if Dick Cheney had been given the choice between Saddam’s regime of state terror enduring and 3,000 Americans being murdered by Al Qaeda, he’d have opted to have Saddam still terrorizing Iraq.

The other day I lamented how stupid a story was that popped up (in the SCMP) about the North Atlantic overturning circulation when some writer goes off about “The Day After Tomorrow”.

Well guess what, here’s an article from yesterday on MSNBC covering the same thing:

Climate scientists fear ‘Day After Tomorrow’ scenario

No. No they don’t.

This time the writer for MSNBC is one “Tony Dokoupil”. I don’t know if that is another pen-name for the SCMP writer, or if he’s just plagiarizing the SCMP.

Anyway, it’s stupid.

*sigh*

It’s this sort of overdramatized, souped-up, (semi-)clueless writing about climate science which plays straight into the hands of the climate skepdicks*, especially the kind which call them alarmists and “chicken little”.

If the THC croaks on us, what awaits isn’t the flashy Day After Tomorrow scenario, it will be a much more boring one.

Basically, imagine a winter which simply never ends. If we’re lucky, shorter and shorter summers, then constant winter. Northern Europe will be hit first, and worst.
You may have freak storms in places, like “dancers” (a.k.a. icenados), but it will be the exception rather than the norm. Some places may experience flash freezing.

And here for the really bad part:

Polish Explorer Says He’s Found Alleged Hitler Nuke Shelter

A Polish explorer claims he has found massive underground structure in southwestern Poland that, he says, the Nazis built as a nuclear shelter for Hitler.

Krzysztof Szpakowski told a news conference Friday he has “no doubt” as to his find, which he says was based on evidence that he has gathered for decades, including witness statements, old documents and an examination of the area by ground-penetrating radar and by dowsers.

Speaking on TVN24, Szpakowski said the structure was part of a system of railway tunnels and corridors that the Nazis were building during World War II around the city of Walbrzych. His conference was hosted by Walbrzych regional authorities.

Two other men claim they have fund another tunnel at a separate location in Walbrzych that contains a Nazi train.

That’s hard to do when facts of any matter are often nuanced. For example, what exactly is economically liberal and conservative. Those are (mostly) meaningless and completely subjective options.

This question is befuddling to me: Extended unemployment insurance benefits correlates with increases in unemployment (in the US). Extended UI only happens during times of extended periods of unemployment, no?

In total, you correctly answered 10/18 (55.56%) of the political knowledge questions. 80% of people correctly answer between 4 and 9 questions; 6 is the average. Your score is higher than 95% of test takers.

On a scale of 0-100%, your total political bias was 8.33%. Your score suggests you are less biased than about 75% of other test takers. 50% of people get a score between 23% and 58%. The average score is 40.82%.

Bomb blast hits Nigerian internally displaced persons camp

A bomb blast hit a Nigerian internally displaced persons (IDP)camp on Friday morning on the outskirts of Adamawa state capital Yola in the northeast of the country, a spokesman for the government emergency agency said.

The blast is the first such attack on an IDP camp in Nigeria and went off at a camp at a school in the hamlet of Malkohi, spokesman Manzo Ezekiel of the National Emergency Management Agency said.

The six-year insurgency waged by Islamist jihadi group Boko Haram has displaced about 2.1 million people and killed thousands. (Reporting By Julia Payne in Abuja and Emma Ande in Yola; Editing by Catherine Evans)

Abbott fights environmental ‘lawfare’ in Australia

[…]

So-called environmental “lawfare” is putting jobs at risk, according to Australian Industry Minister Ian MacFarlane. He claims that tens of thousands of jobs would be at stake if the Carmichael mine does not go ahead - despite Adani’s own forecasts of 1,464 that jobs would be created.

MacFarlane criticized how one development project after another is apparently being held up in various Australian courts. “Environment groups are taking this war against development to a whole new level,” he said.

Ben Oquist - executive director of the Australia Institute - pointed out that of the 5,500 projects that have gone through this legal procedure, only 33 ended up in federal court.

Of those, only six were legally successful - and only two have been stopped by a third-party appeal, Oquist told DW. “It’s a deliberate distraction from the government,” he added.

Lawyers from the New South Wales Environmental Defenders Office, who acted on behalf of the Mackay Conservation Group, described the government’s reaction as extraordinary. Executive director Jeff Smith said all Australians have the right to use the courts.

“There’s no evidence that environment groups were using the courts vexatiously or inappropriately,” Smith told DW. “In fact, a review of the act after 10 years found that the laws were working well, and that the provisions should be strengthened.”

Or that even Israel was willing to work with Iran when it suited them (like say during the Iran-Contra mess).

Yeah Bibi just isn’t credible. And regarding terrorism, I was one of the few people my age who had heard of Bin Laden before the attacks since he was on the FBI’s most wanted for the Kenya attacks. But you’re right, the Israelis have worked with the Iranians when it suited their interests and I don’t get how Obama is some kind of appeaser for doing so. It’s like every deal with a hostile power is made out to be a remake of the Chamberlain-Hitler Munich deal.

Which from my outsider looking in position finds disgusting. “You’re not a real Jew if you support Obama” even though polls suggest that American Jews support the President more than the national average. But of course the big thing is groups are allowed to have different opinions within each other. I may despise Hannity, O’Reilly but I don’t think they’re not “real Irish-Americans”, granted the Jewish cultural identity is a different animal than that but you get what I mean.

Whether they wanted it or not is a bit of a red herring. They were consciously ready to cynically exploit the first available opportunity.

Written before the September 11 attacks, and during political debates of the War in Iraq, a section of Rebuilding America’s Defenses entitled “Creating Tomorrow’s Dominant Force” became the subject of considerable controversy. The passage suggested that the transformation of American armed forces through “new technologies and operational concepts” was likely to be a long one, “absent some catastrophic and catalyzing event - like a new Pearl Harbor.”[

I know a lot of people like to take today to think of the 3000 or so killed in the 9-11 attacks.

I don’t know if it is wrong to say this, but I think we should also think about the people in the middle east that lost their lives in the wars that came after. Many of them were caught up in something they did not create or deserve. Yes, that is my opinion.

I happen to think it is all tragic, and in some ways a bit of an eye for and eye and it really does seem it has made a whole lot of people blind.

I remember all the talk about how 9-11 would unit this country like it hasn’t been united in a long time. How long did that last?

Roe v. Wade recognized that the right to abort an unborn child was a “fundamental right” protected by the Due Process Clause. 410 U.S., at 155. The Roe Court, however, made no attempt to establish that this right was ” ‘deeply rooted in this Nation’s history and tradition’ “; instead, it based its conclusion that “the Fourteenth Amendment’s concept of personal liberty … is broad enough to encompass a woman’s decision whether or not to terminate her pregnancy” on its own normative judgment that anti-abortion laws were undesirable. See id., at 153. We have since rejected Roe’s holding that regulations of abortion must be narrowly tailored to serve a compelling state interest, see Planned Parenthood v. Casey, 505 U.S., at 876 (joint opinion of O’Connor, Kennedy, and Souter, JJ.); id., at 951—953 (Rehnquist, C. J., concurring in judgment in part and dissenting in part)-and thus, by logical implication, Roe’s holding that the right to abort an unborn child is a “fundamental right.” See 505 U.S., at 843—912 (joint opinion of O’Connor, Kennedy, and Souter, JJ.) (not once describing abortion as a “fundamental right” or a “fundamental liberty interest”).

I was in NYC when 9/11 happened for school. I had been there all of 5 days before it happened, and in the aftermath, I heard of the attacks on Sikh shopowners, saw stickers put up around the city stating “Islam is NOT The Enemy” consistently have the “not” scratched out, and had drunken idiots approach me while I was getting late night pizza call me a terrorist and ask if the paper bag I had a pizza in was a bomb. They were clearly joking, but considering I look about as far away from a middle easterner as a brown person can, and had no distinguishing marks or clothing to mark me as a middle easterner or Muslim, I got plenty of perspective. It’s also why I continue to insist that there will always be a racial impetus when the anti-Islam shit goes around, because idiots will judge people for being Muslim not on their actual believes but whether they ‘Look the part’, even when they don’t even (how the fuck do you mistake a Filipino with no discernible Muslim clothing or elements for being a Muslim without making a racist assumption after all?).

As far as the policy swirling around the administration, I felt that the Cheney administration was ready to restart the Cold War and add the Chinese to a new theater. Terrorism was a distraction to them.I actually remember telling somebody that a suicide bomber could hijack a plane and crash it (but only once); everybody would just assume the hijacker would land the plane and make threats and demands. Did not expect it would be done on a large scale; that wasn’t my job, but it was somebody’s job.
As far as going after Iraq, I don’t think it was a priority before 9/11. As I said above, the administration was more interested in Russia and China, especially in light of the experts they listened to. I do think that when the war on terror got rolling, they thought Iraq was lower hanging fruit than Afghanistan and would give “us” a better strategic position to chase Al Qaeda through the Middle East. Never bought into the idea that W. was trying to avenge an attempt against his father, or that Cheney was trying to finish the job of Desert Storm.
However, I knew that W would give the terrorists everything they could have wanted and more, which we did by overreacting and throwing away our freedoms and ideals in exchange for safety.

Other than the attacks themselves, I remember the week after. I live north of Chicago. It’s populated here. Always traffic. But for that whole week afterwards, it was a ghost town. Hardly saw anyone driving around. Even Walmart/Target/grocery stores were ghost towns. I’ll never forget how eerie that was.

I have to agree here. Lord knows I had and still do have a lot of legitimate gripes with Bush but I think he handled that as well as he could given the situation. What I cannot defend though is how Bush handled Afghanistan. I really thought we messed up big time by switiching gears to to Iraq not even two years after 9/11.

Speaking as a military person and a very amateur historian, I found their conduct of war appalling.

For all George W. Bush’s failings as President, I can say this as someone who had what his defenders would call “BDS” his first term but the man was never Sarah Palin.

Suppose he had been a running mate in 2008…
He would have done whatever he was told. He isn’t rotten to the core (like Caribou Barbie), but he would have justified just about anything.

It’s going to be interesting, considering that while Street Fighter has always relied on long standing stereotypes and martial arts media archetypes regarding character design (All-American soldier, Indian yogi, serious Japanese karate master, brutish boxer, etc.), they’ve gone off the wall with recent designs (bright red-skinned oil (as in cooking oil) magnate that uses Turkish oil wrestling as a style comes to mind). So it’s going to be interesting to see what they come up with for the new character.

Obviously the TVs weren’t on then but by the time I got to my next class, world history the TV was on and everyone was just stunned. I don’t know if other schools did this but we got sent home for the day. I walked home and my mom who is a lifer in the federal government was there as were my grandparents. It was just stunning. My Dad tells me he found out about it listening to Howard Stern and thinking it was a re-run because of the ‘93 attack.

Yeah, I went to get a car from the motor pool to go to Louisville that morning, and somebody said something about it that I didn’t really understand until I turned on Howard and then I was listening to coverage for an hour while driving.

I was staying with friends north of Atlanta in September 2001 when I was woken up on the morning of the 11th and told to come and watch what was happening on the TV. I was supposed to fly home two days later on the 13th, this didn’t happen.

I went to an anime event that weekend instead, near Hartsfield airport. I spoke with some American fans about the attacks and I reckoned that the US would lose its shit for at least the next six months before getting back to normal — there had already been reports of Sikhs being attacked for whatever reason or lack of it. The USians I spoke to poo-poohed the idea that it would take that long to recover.

I flew home to Britain the following week and by that time the only armed Federal agents available to provide security at the airport were people wearing BATF jackets hogging the doughnut stand. Next time I went to the States a couple of months later there were National Guardsmen carrying M-16s patrolling the airport concourse. I noticed their weapons had no magazines fitted, I presume the sergeants had them in their pockets to prevent accidents.

Well, this is horrific. A murder-suicide of a family of five, with no survivors, in Lake Minnetonka, Minnesota.

Police officers checking the welfare of residents at a home in the west metro city of Greenwood on Thursday came upon a scene their chief called “unspeakable” — the bodies of five family members, including three teenagers.

The five bodies bore traumatic injuries and were scattered throughout the large house on Channel Drive. The deaths appeared to be a multiple murder-suicide, said South Lake Minnetonka interim Police Chief Mike Siitari.

The family — a father, mother and three teenagers — had not been seen for a couple of days at work or school, and the father’s co-workers had asked police to check on them, he said.

“This is a complex crime scene” that will take several days to sort through, Siitari said.

A friend of mine was en route from Germany to Chicago (with two dogs) when the attacks happened. She said that the pilot came on the intercom and was very upset…almost crying. She didn’t speak German but could tell something was really wrong. He mentioned New York, the only thing she understood. She was in mini-freak-out mode. He then followed his announcement in English without saying exactly what the issue was (there was a problem in NY and they were being rerouted to Toronto). It was a tense flight, even without them knowing exactly what happened.

She stayed in Toronto for a couple of days before someone was able to go pick her and the dogs up.

I wonder how it would be now with internet connections on flights. Would they shut down the internet to keep people from panicking?

Agree 100 percent. In that situation it is not the C-in-C ‘s job or duty to worry about interrupting a story to some kids, and he had no way of knowing whether the next several minutes were of no consequence or crucially important. His job/duty was to get up immediately, start marshaling information, and take solid charge with a view to protecting the nation rather than the tender feelings of a few school kids who were probably bored with him anyway.

I thought it was skiing rather than bicycling; Ivana was a competitive skier. But I can’t find the story…

There was a recent article this spring or summer in the WaPo on him I think. Before my birth but it’s something that older people like my folks remember. But yeah being a polyglot, he could blend in better than most.

re: #528 HappyWarrior

I haven’t seen any yet but I am not surprised that he’s doing well. He was a talent before the Colbert character and and like Biden knows what it’s like to lose family in a tragedy like that- for those who don’t know Stephen’s father and two of his older brothers died in a place crash when Stephen was a boy.

There was that obvious connection between Biden and Colbert…their sense of loss. But also the quiet strength and comfort derived from a shared sense of strong family and deep Catholic faith.

I remember Colbert’s very elderly mother passed away fairly recently. His on-air tribute to her was so moving.

Well, this is horrific. A murder-suicide of a family of five, with no survivors, in Lake Minnetonka, Minnesota.

startribune.com

Sounds like one of those “family annihilation” crimes. Horrible. RIP.

Mrs. Fish was just informing me of this. Ugh. And on today, of all days, to find out.

Speaking of folks who pulled a vanishing act, I’ve always wondered what happened to Frank Matthews, a 1960s drug kingpin who disappeared along with his girlfriend in 1973 - and with between $15 to $20 million dollars (about $80 to over $100 million when adjusted for inflation) - before he could be arrested. The authorities think he might still be alive, but where?

Don’t know that case. But what about DB Cooper, it’s just crazy to think people can disappear just like that. I wonder where I would go if I had to hide. I only speak English lol and I think I stand out like a sore thumb since I am noticeably awkward.

Personally I think “Dan Cooper” (whoever he was) died in the attempt after he jumped from the plane. My take on it is that his body is still out there, most likely in one of the more heavily-forested areas of Clark County, WA, and if you asked me to narrow it down, I’d say somewhere in the forests around the small town of Washougal. There’s some pretty damn dense forests up around there.

I don’t buy that at all. He could have just said that he had something else to do, and quietly walked out. That’s what Clinton or Obama would have done, just said “Excuse me” and left. Kids know that there’s always going to be some interruption of some sort. That wouldn’t have panicked the kids at all.

In any event, the sooner the President leaves in a situation like this, the better. . Once he left, the school would be left alone in quiet.

And nobody knew if the hijacker’s allies were going to stage something anyway, which would be another reason to leave precipitously.

re: #543 HappyWarrior

The current theory is that he basically parachuted into the Washougal River Valley basin. I know that area really well - I used to live around there when I was a teenager and my friends and I all used to go swimming up at Dougan Falls. We used to joke that if we found Cooper’s money (or his body with the money), we were all just gonna shut the hell up and split it equitably, LOL.

They’re busy debating why Trump is leading in the polls. It’s come down to celebrity name recognition vs. the GOP’s long history of appealing to the lowest common denominator.

I don’t have the heart to point out it’s both, combined with a lot of RWNJ anger over 2012.

Well put. Obama’s re-election was just as crazy-making for them as GW Bush’s re-election was to us. This time around they don’t want a candidate, they want a hammer.

The hajj is scheduled to start later this month, and the Saudis have been busy with their construction all around Mecca. Well, one of the big cranes blew over in a storm, killing several people:

UPDATE:
Ha’aretz is reporting 52 killed in the collapse, dozens more injured.

There’s a huge project underway at the Masjid Al Haram (the structure surrounding the Qa’aba) to expand access for pilgrims. There’s now additional levels/structures ringing it so that ever greater numbers of pilgrims can fulfill their obligations.

The polling numbers are certainly stunning; Trump and Carson between them have over half the support, with everyone else in single digits. The GOP establishment, which has cynically manipulated the fears and hatreds of the base to get their votes for massive tax cuts for the rich, now face a monster of their own creation which hates them about as much as they hate the President.
