Carly’s bringing Petreaus out of mothballs, but she’s going to snub Putin, even though she knows him well.
Christie’s going to hide under his bed, ‘cause those toddlers are scary, but then he’s going to bomb the shit out of everything.
Rubio is going to do…whatever it takes, or something.
Kasich is going to mesmerize all foes with his dramatic hand gestures and solemnity.
Jeb! is going to call his dad and ask, “Did I do good, Daddy?”
Cruz is going to see if he can stick his head any further up Trump’s ass, and then he’s also going to bomb the shit out of everything—carpetbombs, but not on cities, wherever the ENEMY is (good luck finding them Teddy.)
Rand is going to bask in the glory of his few minutes of coherence (5 minute rule notwithstanding) and also call his dad and ask, “Did I do good, Daddy?”
Carson is going to pat himself on the back with his “gifted hands” because he actually pronounced Mosul correctly once. Then he’s going to take a nap.
TRUMP is going to go watch all the internet polls proclaiming him the winner of the debate and all other things in the universe.

The end.

I’m the tool of the Government

For I am destined to rule

But you can’t look away

With the stuff that I say
I’m the best you can get
Have you guessed me yet?
I’m the slime oozin’ out
From your TV set

You will obey me while I lead you
And eat the garbage that I feed you
Until the day that we don’t need you
Don’t go for help … no one will heed you
Your mind is totally controlled
It has been stuffed into my mold
And you will do as you are told
Until the rights to you are sold

My recap:

The end.

Thanks. You just saved me a ton of time and aggravation. Mr. Calochortus and I got the Christmas tree up and decorated, enjoyed listening to some Christmas carols, and didn’t mention the GOP even once.
We did put the (practically antique) lead foil icicles on the tree. For the last time. For some reason Mr. C thinks we should get rid of them. He has no respect for tradition. But perhaps some respect for our health and safety.

Donald Trump will take the mic at a Mesa rally on Wednesday after an introduction from another controversial political figure: Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio.

This is the second time Arpaio will have participated in an Arizona event for the Republican presidential front-runner. But the sheriff said he has not prepared remarks for his opening act.

“You know me, I don’t prepare,” he told The Arizona Republic on Tuesday. “I just get out there and wing it. I’m sure that the situation with terrorism is now on the forefront — especially with Trump — and, of course, illegal immigration is still there.”

The Trump rally will be held inside a private hangar at the Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport.

Doors open at 10 a.m. and the rally begins at noon.

“Targeted carpet bombing.” This is the sort of shit you get from somebody who reads a Tom Clancy novel and immediately thinks he’s a military genius. “Targeted carpet bombing” is an oxymoron, a contradiction in terms so prominent that any military officer would laugh himself silly hearing it. Carpet bombing is for when you don’t care what you hit, you just want to reduce an entire area to rubble. The only way you “target” it is in choosing the size of the area you want to unleash your indiscriminate carnage upon.

at least i put the debate to productive use!

the lights were so bright they revealed the true topography of trump’s mysterious haircomb

turns out he has a big patch of hair on top of his head, but he is bald all around it. he combs some from his left side up to cover the gap from the hair on the side to the hair on top, and then of course there’s that long thatch that starts way in the back that gets combed over on top of everthing else and ends up on his forehead

oh, the debate? the usual BS

I also think Hillary (or Bernie) would win the general election. However, the GOP really needs to experience huge, crushing losses in presidential elections to have any chance at reform, and I don’t see losses of those magnitude occurring.

If Trump, Cruz or Carson can’t do losses of that magnitude we are truly, deeply fucked. People completely unqualified or unhinged (or both) that they shouldn’t be elected dog catcher, and they’re not going to lose a presidential election by enough to start to fix the GOP? Then, I figured my WiFi was getting interference from other routers in the apartment building, probably because we were all using channel 6. So, I’m testing out using channel 1. So far, it seems OK.

But, just in case, I’ve ordered a new wireless router, a Netgear model that will have an English interface. No harm in having a back up.

Though I am not particularly welcoming to what Abrams did to ST, supposedly the Disney directive for SW kept the franchise more on point, from a fan perspective.

Disney’s operation on this is big and straight forward - 3 movies from now to 2020. Total revenues for all SW franchise streams will probably be $25 billion from this Friday through 2020. This is a major, probably the major, single franchise in the entire entertainment industry. Many thousands in the movie business will have jobs over the next 7 or 8 years because of this business.

So, that’s why this is a big deal.

Yes, the gun-f*ckers are winning the public debate:

POLL: Most Now Oppose an Assault Weapons Ban

A majority of Americans oppose banning assault weapons for the first time in more than 20 years of ABC News/Washington Post polls, with the public expressing vast doubt that the authorities can prevent “lone wolf” terrorist attacks and a substantial sense that armed citizens can help.

Just 45 percent in this national survey favor an assault weapons ban, down 11 percentage points from an ABC/Post poll in 2013 and down from a peak of 80 percent in 1994. Fifty-three percent oppose such a ban, the most on record.

Indeed, while the division is a close one, Americans by 47-42 percent think that encouraging more people to carry guns legally is a better response to terrorism than enacting stricter gun control laws. Divisions across groups are vast, underscoring the nation’s gulf on gun issues.

Because they will hear it over and over.

The establishment outlets are full of highly educated people who lament Donald Trump.

They say he just repeats a few simple things over and over.

Yes.

And that’s why Trump does it.

He knows - he’s made his name money on this - that by repeating something he can sell it to you.

Donald Trump is a salesman. A real estate salesman in particular, but a salesman in general.

Trump demonizing Muslims is the same strategy used by Coke to sell sugar water - simply repeat something enough and you will convince people.

Last night’s debate was such a fact-free clown show that anyone keeping track would have been overwhelmed by the deluge of derp.

From simple stuff, like knowing who the current head of state in Jordan is, to knowing that the existing US strategy involves going after Daesh and partnering/embedding with Iraqi forces.

The clowns got it all wrong.

You can’t carpet bomb Daesh out of existence, not without killing massive amounts of civilians. That’s what happens when a terror group operates in densely populated civilian areas. And you have to be specific where you’re targeting - let’s start with what countries are involved.

No fly zones to fight Daesh? Really? They don’t have any helicopters, let alone fighter jets or anything larger than a commercial drone. That’s a strategy?

Fight Daesh wherever they are? That’s a strategy?

Oh, and Gov. Christie, in your canned response, King Abdullah is the head of state in Jordan, not Hussein (who died years ago).

Paul, Cruz and others who claimed that all the terrorism in the US since 9/11 was through immigration are also wrong. One of the SB shooters was born/raised in the US. Nidal Hussein was likewise born/raised in US (and was in the US Army when he committed mass murder).

And the elephant in the room is that no one called any of them on that the PP shooter engaged in domestic terrorism, because that would destroy the Other that the GOP is fighting - Islamophobia. Admitting that there are domestic terrorists - right wing domestic terrorists at that - undercuts the threat posed by a handful of terrorists who claim to kill in the name of Islam.

We didn’t carpet bomb Iraq. Airpower has changed significantly from where we engaged in total war and carpet bombing entire cities to where we now have ability to target with precision a single building/structure from great distances (GPS, laser- and other targeting systems). So, it’s not necessary to carpet bomb - having B-52s load up with a full load of dumb bombs and line them up in Linebacker formation bombing runs.

Cruz (and most of the rest of the GOP) is appealing to the chairborne rangers and Islamophobes who can’t get enough of the clash of civilizations, as long as it doesn’t involve them fighting directly.

All one has to do to see how desperate commercial media are to get clicks is to see how they are trying to polish last night’s turd:

Best Lines of the Final GOP Debate of 2015

Check what makes the bar for “best lines”

“It gave us greater tools and we are seeing those tools work right now in San Bernardino. In particular, what it did is the prior program only covered a relatively narrow slice of phone calls,” Cruz added.

If that qualifies as a “best line”, then the instant raman in the vending machine at a college dorm qualifies as “gourmet food.”

I don’t know about anyone else, but I really appreciate the ability of our “free press” to ask questions of relevance and also flag answers that are either lies or misleading. After all, it’s the possible future leader of the most powerful military in the world. There should be no doubt about the integrity of our news sources be it print or radio/televised. Yeah. Uh huh. I’m just constantly reminded on every day that both the GOP and the “journalists” or whatever they call themselves in these days of circus and entertainment, have not only been selling drugs, they have started to do them. They are believing their own ineptitude to be truth and fact. Sad days for those who died in the name of Freedom Of The Press, that so many today would be mere empty suits and pretty dresses with nothing inside, not even a valid question. It’s Circus Americus and the key word is “afraid”. Be very afraid. If you are not afraid they will pour fear on you until you think you are wrong. Greatest Nation On The Face Of The Earth shits it’s pants over EVERYTHING. But not mass murder. No. That’s the price you pay for FREEDOM. Yes. Now where is my flag lapel pin? I must go tell my beloved Veterans they are too expensive, and should rely upon the kindness of strangers for help. God Bless Me.

Former governor of NJ comes out swinging:

The Republican Party Must Defeat Trump Now

[…]

It is no longer a stretch to compare Donald Trump, and some of the other current Republican candidates for president, to some of the worst dictators in history. Trump especially is employing the kind of hateful rhetoric and exploiting the insecurities of this nation, in much the same way that allowed Hitler and Mussolini to rise to power in the lead-up to World War II. The parallels are chilling. In pre-WWII Germany, the economy was in ruins, people were scared, and they wanted someone to blame. Today we find ourselves with a nation of people who feel under attack both physically and economically and are fearful. The middle class has never fully recovered economically from the Great Recession. Income disparity is growing, but demonizing with a broad-brush all “immigrants,” forgetting that nearly all of our ancestors were exactly that at one point in the past 400 years, is both dangerous and contrary to all this nation stands for. After Paris and San Bernardino, attacking Muslims, the vast majority of whom are peaceful adherents to their faith, has become fashionable.

[…]

But she is also very delusional:

Let me be very clear: This is not the Republican Party, but this is how we are being defined right now.

Dear Ms. Whitman: Yes, this is the Republican party. It may not be what you want the party to be, but it is the party as it is constructed in December 2015.

I honest to god don’t know what to do here at this point. I mean, for fucks sake, they managed to convince most people it seems that gun-free zones are basically killzones and that anyone advocating for them is akin to a murderer themselves.

In US, poverty dampens genetic influence on IQ

An analysis of data gathered from 14 independent studies indicates that the influence of genes on intelligence varies according to people’s social class in the US, but not in Western Europe or Australia. The findings are published in Psychological Science, a journal of the Association for Psychological Science.

Research suggests that genes and environment both play a critical role in shaping a person’s intelligence. A longstanding hypothesis in the field of behavioral genetics holds that our potential intelligence, as set by our genes, is more fully expressed in environments that are supportive and nurturing, but is suppressed in conditions of poverty and disadvantages. While some studies have provided evidence supporting this hypothesis, others have not.

[…]

Tucker-Drob and Bates analyzed data from a total of 24,926 pairs of twins and siblings who had participated in studies conducted in the United States, Australia, England, Sweden, Germany, and the Netherlands.

The researchers found that the relationship between genes, socioeconomic status, and intelligence depended on which country the participants were from.

“The hypothesis that the genetic influence on intelligence depends on socioeconomic status was not supported in studies outside of the US,” says Tucker-Drob. “In the Netherlands, there was even evidence suggestive of the opposite effect.”

Importantly, the meta-analysis did not show any evidence that other factors - such as age of testing, whether the tests measured achievement and knowledge or intelligence, whether the tests were of a single ability or a composite cognitive measures - influenced the results.

The researchers suggest that the stark difference between the US and other countries might be explained by differences in how low socioeconomic status in experienced in the countries. That is, the relatively robust healthcare and social-welfare programs in Western Europe and Australia may buffer some of the negative environmental effects typically associated with poverty.

According to Bates, a primary question for future research will be to identify the specific aspects of a society that “break the link between social class and the expression of genetic potentials for intellectual development.”

“Once such characteristics are identified, they could inform policies directed at narrowing test score gaps and promoting all of the positive consequences of higher IQ, such as health, wealth, and progress in science, art, and technology,” he concludes.

The title of the PR I think is not worded very well. If I understand this research properly, what is being shown is not a dampening of genetic influence by poverty but rather but rather just an effect. In other words, is the glass half full or half empty, i.e. perhaps a better way to state the research is the lack of poverty allows genetic influences to be more prominent.

Lifespan — genetic background and physical activity

[…]

Adulthood physical activity did not increase lifespan

Vigorous physical activity in adulthood did not increase lifespan neither in animals nor in human twins, even though physical activity is well-known to have various positive effects on health, physical fitness, and physical function. Based on both our animal and human findings, we propose that genetic factors might partly explain the frequently observed associations between high physical activity level and later reduced mortality in humans. Our finding covers vigorous physical activity started at adulthood, hence physical activity started during childhood may have different effects. Thus, it will be critical to determine whether physical activity has a positive effect on lifespan when commenced early in life.

There was the famous quote about how the amount of time that running adds to your like equals the amount of time you spend running.

I agree that physical activity can help improve the quality of life: when I ran a lot, it took me a lot less time to fall asleep at night, for example. And in general, I just feel a lot better after having physically exerted myself for around 40 minutes, even if it is just brisk walking or cycling.

I’m right there with you.

But, the either or question relating owning guns to fighting terrorism (basically—which is a better way to respond to terrorism—more guns or fewer guns) seems like a “when did you stop beating your wife” question. There are only two answer choices—nothing like “what the fuck does one have to with the other? Neither have anything to do with responding to terrorism.” Notice, that is a NEW question, just added this go-around.

I honest to god don’t know what to do here at this point. Every time some big shooting happens, the only valid response in this country seems to be “MORE GUNS, WE NEED MORE FUCKING GUNS, GUN IS THE ONLY SECURITY WE CAN GET!” and even the most tepid rebuttal gets you turned into the most evil gun-grabber in the history of the world. I mean, for fucks sake, they managed to convince most people it seems that gun-free zones are basically killzones and that anyone advocating for them is akin to a murderer themselves.

There just seems to be no way to get through here. The NRA has fucking outright won for the soul of this country for at least a generation, and I don’t know what the fuck to do anymore here. There just seems to be no fucking hope.

The NRA has won.
There is NOTHING we can do to stop them.
And this insanity will continue until the guns are turned on the rich. When enough of the rich are affected, then things might begin to change…

Not that it matters by this point, the “wait for all the facts!” crowd has already been running for weeks with the insistence that these two were ISIS operatives pulling off the first successful act of “radical Islamic terrorism” on US soil in ages. Prokop writes:

But the fact that elites aren’t yet even trying very hard to block a likely disastrous Trump or Cruz nomination is still pretty weird, and there seem to be two main reasons for it. First, there’s a sense of complacency, bred by the long-held certainty that Trump’s long-held lead will vanish, that has lasted far too long by now. Second, elites just really don’t know what to do — if money and endorsements won’t work, they may be genuinely unsure what does.

Trump Wine Sales Booming

Republican presidential front runner Donald Trump makes plenty of controversial statements, but his poll numbers keep climbing. According to Trump Winery’s General Manager Kerry Woolard, so do sales of Trump wine.

“Overall we’re seeing about a 300-percent increase in our business across the board,” Woolard said. “Particularly as it pertains to online, which I think is directly indicative of the exposure that we’re getting from him being on the campaign.”

Woolard also credits some of the growth to awards won by Trump wines and several recent national magazine articles. She says some winery patrons express appreciation for Trump the candidate, while others express dismay, or just stay away.

It was almost entirely “sources say.” You know, like “sources said” Biden was gearing up to run…right up until the day he announced he wasn’t. Then all the “moderates” who’d developed wood over a potential Biden/ Clinton showdown accused anyone they could think of of forcing him out of contention.

Christie was an effective federal prosecutor, but in highlighting his criminal prosecution of terrorists he actually suggests that the crime-fighting approach to terrorism works.

That’s the opposite of what he’d want to say, which is killing/stopping terrorists overseas.

Of course, the other issue is that most of the terrorism prosecutions took place not in NJ, but over in the ED or SD of NY - particularly in Mary Jo White’s SDNY office.

Default judgments. Arrest warrants are for criminal cases. This is civil.

There’s two possible scenarios: 1) CCJ and Gawker’s attorneys are in deep negotiations, probably centering around having CCJ appear live on the internet, shirtless, adorned with Badges Of Shame and singing loudly an apology and admitting he shits on floors and is a closet case or 2) Gawker’s lawyers are preparing to file a Motion for Summary Judgment, which the judge will bang the gavel on and sigh in relief that this shitshow is no longer in his courtroom.

My point was that he was defending neoconservatism and saying that it was mainstream conservatism back in 2003, but now he’s claiming that he isn’t a neoconservative.

The funny thing is if anyone wrote that column today, they would be ran out of the party as a RINO. Take this paragraph:

Buchanan holds immigrants in contempt. Not just illegal immigrants — even some who immigrate legally are not fit to be Americans in Buchanan’s eyes. In his book, “The Death of the West,” Buchanan writes that Mexican immigrants are problematic because they are “not only from another culture, but of another race,” and that “different races are far more difficult to assimilate than different cultures.” This is plain un-American. The color of your skin or the racial background of your parents should never disqualify you from becoming a true American. This is the most diverse nation on Earth, even if Buchanan would prefer that it not be.

re: #531 iossarian

Do I have it right that there is now a little war going on between different right-wing factions over whether the term “neo-conservative” is an anti-Semitic slur?

I don’t know, but it’s always been so IMO. Back in the bad old days of Bush The Deciderer, about seven times out of ten when some leftist would rant about “Neocons” they were into THE JUICE CONTROL OUR FOREIGN POLICY11! a couple of sentences later. It’s always been a gateway drug to Jew Hate for some.

That was the favorite strawman/anti-Semite card of Rush Limbaugh any time someone would complain about Bush’s foreign policy.

When he become POTUS he will nuke Scotland.

He will have a fabulous glow-in-the-dark, night time golf course.

That’s odd. I never saw it that way. “Neocons” referred to the folks on the Right whose foreign policy was interventionist, while “Paleocons” were isolationist. Neocons bought into the common postwar Liberal belief that our job was World Cop and Making The World Safe For Democracy. I consider Dick Cheney a neocon, same for Condoleeza Rice.

Did I miss something?

“We only do (everything) to protect Israel (read: Jews).”

There’s two ways to read Neocon, the rational way, and the emotional way. Journalists and academics wrote about the former, which is what you’re describing. People ranting on political forums were in the latter camp often enough to notice.

I disagree since Marco Rubio has said exactly what that second paragraph says. And as it relates to legal immigrants he’s stood by it without being run off.

Awwwww

US businessman and presidential candidate Donald Trump on Wednesday lost his bid before the British Supreme Court to stop a wind farm from being built off his Scottish golf resort.

Trump had argued that the 11-turbine offshore project, approved by the Scottish government in 2013, would spoil the view from the links at his resort at Balmedie, but he lost two attempts to put a stop to it in Scottish courts before Supreme Court justices unanimously dismissed his appeal Wednesday.

He will use his Presidential Powers to order the wind to stop blowing there.

This seems right to me (I know this won’t be seen since there is a new thread). There was a lot to do with Francis Fukuyama’s “End of History” position that placed America as the last remaining superpower. Neo-cons wanted to use that position to reinvent the world in their image.

The fact that not all terrorists are Muslims doesn’t even enter the conversation. See also the PP shooter. The Charleston church killer. Etc.

The GOP is determined to demonize Muslims and immigrants, all while turning a blind eye to home grown right wing ~Christian~ terrorists.

I know. It’s like saying “Not all Catholics are IRA terrorists, but all IRA terrorists are Catholic, so why should we trust The Pope when he says he believes in peace?”
